However, her mother-in-law had extraordinary approach toward saving money, including taking a bath only once a week. She was convinced that it was okay for her daughter-in-law to clean herself using the same water that she took a bath in.

Seriously?! Bathing in someone else's bath water? I think I'm gonna be sick! There are other ways to save money that are more... sanitary. Like taking a shower. Showers use a lot less water than a bath.
You many not like taking a both after some - but if you are in a drought you do not have much of a choose. However, it would not be smelly or so dirty, also it would be cold. So having steam if that is what is meant by those lines, this would be wrong. O but if it was meant to be smelly - do you know how long it would take for water to be so smelly, the smell would be from what the first person used.

My husband came from a family of 15, it was 3boys, then 3girls, then another 3 boys, then a girl, boy, girl, then 2 boys. Back in the 60's, that's how they bathed, the first 3 boys in the bath, then the water was changed for the girls, then down the line

There is a difference between living frugally and being a complete cheepskate. Also one should never make assumptions about someone before getting to know them and their story, op's mil was so stubborn and biased she almost killed op and her unborn grandchild, thankfully she did everything in her power to save them until op's husband paid for the rest of the treatment after clearing his mother's misunderstanding assumption of op. It takes a strong person to forgive and an even stronger one to give a second chance.

I feel like Molly should've been arrested for convincing Annie to bathe in that filthy sewer like water. Just her soaking in there can lead to some serious infections. That's literally a crime scene that Molly committed. Realistically, if the police found out that Molly forced her own pregnant daughter in law in that filth, she can be EASILY arrested in no time! Molly doesn't deserve be in the hospital with her & MAINLY see the baby!

Except she did the shopping. But the bath, it wasn't green in her place. But still, everyone in the house had to use it before dumping it. Same with the upstairs toilet. Also folks were only to use two squares of tp at the most. Even if they had the fifty wiper runs.
There were nine folks living in that house. She got mad when two of her sons put a shower in the basement bathroom. To her, that was wasting money. Also, she only washed clothing after they had been worn several days in a row. I don't know about underpants. But bras were each worn for several days before washing. She made fun of me on how my family wore clothing just once then washed it.
