  • Today in this Vlog I walk up Petřín Hill which is the first Touristy activity I ever did when I first came to Prague. In this video I discuss and two ways Czech People have Surprised Me since I started this youtube Channel and give a little history about Petřín Tower which was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
    What are your thoughts on the two ways Czechs have surprised me? Let me know in the Comments below.

    Hi, literally found your channel today and I like the content so far, so keep it up! The whole Czechia vs Czech Republic thing is a little overblown in my opinion, btw. when I'm abroad and/or encountering foreigners, they usually don't confuse my country with Chechnya, but usually think that we are still Czechoslovakia. If you like the parks of Prague, I would highly recommend Obora Hvězda and Divoká Šárka.

    Hello, I like your content very much, pease keep it up. I think the overall positivity of the comments will diminsh a bit when you start to bring more criticism of the life in the Czrech Rep (which can be expected anyway). When any author composes longer text or speech, when a term is used many times, its always useful to use both variants as it makes speech richer. Its a practice recommended for all words so why country name would be different :) But even when in short speech, both variants are ok and number of those who cannot adapt to shorter version will decrease with time definitely. BTW I prefer the shorter one, because the longer sounds too official and fears about Chechnya is absurd as covered in other comments. Good luck with your channel dude!

    Hi, Prague Expat,
    I would like to add something to your 2nd observation about Czechia / the Czech Republic...
    All the official places and some people try to force the usage of "Czechia". And that is something, what makes those people, who use and want to use "the Czech Republic", it makes those people even stronger in their stand. And because it has been made officially, you can't say "Let's wait for some time, which version will prevail..." So "the Czech Republic" is, unfortunately, slowly dying term (no matter that today it is the dominant one)...
    I hate the "Czechia" thing, and even with a loaded gun near my head, I wouldn't adopt it. I was born in the Czechoslovakia and most of my life, I live in the Czech Republic. And I am not going to change it because some representatives of our country made this change.
    I think you could call yourself a lucky man that you left the US and you live in country, where is true freedom. We are the most atheist country in the whole world and that's THE ADVANTAGE. From seeing any newspapers, TV, etc., America is losing a lot... Lately the abortion thing ...

    I have opposite opinion, even I am from Moravia, Czechia just seems much comfortable bcs its short, and also Czech Republic dont really feel to me as representing moravia and silesia...i never got the point.
    Also in czech language is Czechia Česko, and no one cares about it. So whenever I am introducing myself to foreign most of the time I say Czech Republic, and later I am using Czechia sometimes czech republic randomly, bcs I know the person I am speaking with knows it already. I am just trying to prepare everybody to it.
    And chechnya? well it's just like slovakia X slovenia, austria X australia or Iran X Iraq etc...
    I think just older czech people have problem to go along with it 🤫 I personally never met any czech shitting me about using Czechia so idk :d
    PS: I literally made video "Welcome to Czechia" You can watch it it's funny, and no one said anything about it to me...😆

    Second, thia is merely an issue in English. The country has a one word name in languages such as Dutch ( Tsjechie), German ( Tschechien). Etc. Etc.

    • @ThePragueExpat0
      @ThePragueExpat0  Před rokem

      Good Point. I think both names are fine. Im mostly responding to people who keep posting in the comment section telling me not to say The Czech Republic in my videos. It is not the wrong name. It has been used for 2 decades and its on your passport.
      Ireland is commonly differentiated from Northern Ireland as "The Republic of Ireland" when it just says Ireland on my Irish passport. Language continuously evolves and the young generation will probably only use Czechia in 30 years. Right now as an English teacher in Prague 20-30 year olds mostly refuse to use Czechia.

    Ohh, the ages old topic of Czechia vs Czech Republic. I don't really care, but I do use Czechia because it's shorter. I also say Česko in czech for the same reason.
    People argue that Czechia is like Čechy. It's not. If you (or they) think about it, Česko sounds more like Čechy than Czechia, yet they happily use it. Some Moravians and Silesians do complain about it in discussions like this though. In real live however, nobody really cares.
    I didn't like Czechia at first. It just didn't sound right. But I'm lazy and "why waste time say lot word when few word do trick".
    Besides, there's no land called Czech in english. It would have been Čechy, but that already is Bohemia. So basically, if we were to do some mental gymnastics, we should come to the conclusion that Czechia is really just a neutral word to contain Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia.
    Another thing. The correct name for Silesia is Czech Silesia since there's also Silesia in Poland and a bit in Slovakia as well. So if we were to do some more gymnastics, we could come up with the idea, that Czechia is actually a reference to Silesia as that's the only english part of this country which does have "Czech" in it's name! :O
    So basically, my position is that I don't care which one you use as long as you don't try to justify it. It will end up being silly as you can see above :)

      @ThePragueExpat0  Před rokem +1

    Well, German passport says "Bundesrepublik Detuschland", but the country is casually called Deutschland. That's why there is long, tedious official name (Czech Republic) and a casual name (Czechia). Czechia btw is historically accurate name and if someone confuses it with just Bohemia, it's his problem - and nonsense.

    • @ThePragueExpat0
      @ThePragueExpat0  Před rokem

      Good Point! I can definitely see both sides of this debate.

  •  Před rokem +1

    Those arguments about using The Czech Republic instead of Czechia not to be confused with Chechnya are absurd. Chechnya is not a independent country, so those people are from Russia (our four those who like long names The Russian Federation :)). Slovakia and Slovenia are also close in pronunciation, Austria and Australia, Iraq and Iran, etc. Still all people use the shorts names obviously. Czechia is a word from Middle Ages! Just know the history!
    And BTW, isn't it a mistake not to use The beforeof Czech Republic? It's the grammar rule of your language too use the before the official long names of countries, isn't it?
    Tip to visit in Czechia - Znojmo, a very historical town and the national park next to it!

    I didn't like the word "Czechia" at first, but I suppose it's just something we simply need to get used to hearing/reading. Just like we say "France" and not "The French Republic".
    My personal hypothesis of why so many people hate it is that it's so short. We used to be "Czechoslovakia"... Plus, we're very small, so at least our name was big 🙂
    Maybe we as a nation have low self-esteem, so we like people saying nice things about our country and having a long name 🙂

      I agree as people get used to hearing it they will change. Was France ever called "The French Republic"? The Czech Republic was the name for my wife's entire life before they adopted Czechia a few years ago and she didnt like the change.
      Maybe having a country with a low self esteem is what makes it nice. People try to compensate for that insecurity and do their best to make it nice. They take care of their things.

    The name Czechia is perfectly fine. People just don't understand that our country doesn't change its name at all. The Czech Republic still remains, but the second alternative, Czechia, is coming. Both versions of the name are officially valid, it is up to each person which one to use. It's the same with our neighbors, Slovakia and the Slovak Republic. It's just a matter of habit, the name Czechia will be accepted gradually over decades. And people also don't realize that the Czechia does not mean Bohemia (Moravia, Silesia), but the whole of the Česko - Czechia, they get lost in a bad translation. Confusions with Chechnya are frequent, it is necessary to explain it patiently. The uneducated, the "unteached" and the ignorant will always exist..

    So how many people here use: United Kingdom, The Islamic Republic of Iran, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, The Republic of Ireland, the Republic of Colombia, the Federative Republic of Brazil.. should I go on. The expression Czechia was added since all the countries have a short name. The reasoning: "I was born when we called it only Czech Republic so I don't know why I should change." kinda scares me. I would expect that older person may say that. When I was small we used gimnásium instead of gimnázium, should I use it even though it is evidently stupid?

    Czech Republic = political name. Czechia = geographical name.
    Slovak Republic = political name. Slovakia = geographical name.
    Russian Federation = political name. Russia = geographical name.
    Federal Republic of Germany = political name. Germany = geographical name.
    The geographical name Czechia was officially announced when the state started to exist on its own in 1993. The only reason why we use a political name in places where other countries would use their geographical name is because the state and its institutions did not use the geographical name and thus our population did not know about the short name for a long time. As a lot of our population is rather conservative they just want to keep using what they're used to (or in other words what was wrongly fed to them by the government). Another reason for using the Czech Republic I've heard from some Czech people is pride in the "republic" part and the fact we were finally on our own which people wanted to emphasize.
    I myself am embarrassed whenever any Czech person uses the political name in casual English speech. It is as if someone from Germany would say "I'm from the Fedral Republic of Germany, great to meet you."

      Yes this is some history that alot of people dont know about and nobody shared this information with me till I made this video. Someone else listed this reason in another comment but you gave a more full history of what happened. Thanks for putting so much time into thoroughly explaining this.
      Ireland is doing kind of the reverse of this... kind of. People has been calling Ireland "Ireland" for a long time. However people also call Northern Ireland "Ireland".. so in order to differentiate Irish have begun to say "the real Ireland" informally or "the republic of Ireland" formally even though the political name is Ireland as does my Irish Passport. Many Irish still have negative feelings towards the UK and thus Northern Ireland. Totally off topic but as a citizen of Ireland I thought I would share. Cheers
