Why the SONY XPERIA PRO is a UNIQUE pro video tool

- This is a long term test of the Sony Xperia Pro using it as a professional video tool. This means as an on camera monitor using the HDMI input and for doing live streams directly from it. I don't cover any of the phone features, which are very good especially the camera system, because I wanted to keep this video focused on the unique features that make this a very different phone from everything else out there.
This is not a review as I was paid by Sony to front their launch campaign outside of the USA a couple of months ago. I never make sponsored videos or endorse products that I wouldn't use or highly rate. So of course a lot of the video is about the stuff I like but I don't ignore the things that need to be improve which I go over.
The on camera shots of me within the phone where almost all shot with the Sony a1 in 8K to give me the ability to do the zooming in post. The beauty shots are all shot with the Sony A7S III as are the BTS of the shots in Richmond. The shots of me in London with lockdown hair for the Sony promo were shot with the Sony FX9 and the gimbal shots with the Sony A7S III. This gear and the rest are listed in the affiliate links below.

Huge thanks and love to my wonderful cats as always and sorry Jimmy for having you in this one, I will make it up next time I promo! - Krátké a kreslené filmy
To catch these pure ordinary things/moments, that only exist once, it takes a calm appreciating mind, someone who is actively looking and has mastered capturing it. You Philip show us the great beauty we are surrounded with, what a present… and by looking through your camera lens with you, I feel a deep satisfaction, happiness, rapture, joy. Thank you for creating and sharing. ♥️ has spoken.
Thanks so much Philipp :)
That sunset stuff is just astoundingly beautiful. Thanks for the reminder to turn on notices to catch your next one!!
The only channel I watch full screen; you make everything beautiful.
You, Sir, are a true master. Every time I watch one of your films it seems a step up from the previous. It is truly inspiring to watch your work. Thank you... again.
Thank you Marshall :)
Very interesting approach, Philip, and beautifully shot as usual! 🤓👍
Thank you Gerald 🙂
@@philipbloom i thought you released Gerald back in to the forest?
@@Adam-un6de that’s where he was vlogging from
@@philipbloom 😂😂
I always enjoy watching!
Just when you thought the beautiful shots were over.... BAM... a corker right at the end... You bastard! :)
I don't know about the phone, but the cinematography lesson was superb.
the only guy in CZcams I'd expressly move my lazy ass off to change from my 4K screen Xperia to a 4K Bravia TV just to watch.
I always love when I get Philip bloom on CZcams notifications. I always appreciate your beautiful shot composition
Ultimate Product Review level unlocked. What a way to sell. Loved this Philip thank you again for making gorgeous subtle tutorial on how to get cinematographic shots.
That's the first positive video I've seen about the Xperia pro. Really good points.
The weakness is video compression and codecs from the phone to the internet. Current apps still do not look good coming from directly from a phone. This is something that could be fixed, if someone wanted to fix it.
Two minutes in before one realizes the narration presentation. Well done!
I'm a big Sony fan and I love this idea. I couldnt justify the price of it without a waveform and peaking functions though.
If they put those functions in it would be a no brainer purchase for me.
It really isn’t a big thing to add surely. It’s just an app update
I would want false color
@@philipbloom Hey there. Any news from Sony if they will add at least waveforms?
@@philipbloom Has Sony updated to app yet so we can wave forms and touch to focus etc?
So they just updated it, it only took them one year and half 😀
just to note, people if any of you are interested with mostly the monitor function of Xperia Pro, just purchase the Xperia 1mk3, its on preorder right now, and Sony make it work with a type C to HDMI adapter.
it can not do all the live stream function, but it still can be do the monitor job.
newer Processing power, 500 mah bigger battery, 30% brighter screen, and all the other phone upgrades.
you won't be able to charge the phone while using it as a monitor so it'd be nore time limited, but even with all that, it's still worth 1/2 the Xperia Pro price right?
Nowhere near as reliable using an adaptor and you won’t get the ability to have 4K 60P input.
@@philipbloom ah yes but at least they will be working off the exact same app as the Xperia Pro so anything the pro app got a feature update of, the other Xperia 1s will get them also.
Amazing review and lovely footage. Welcome back by the way!
Astonishing images Philip!! And a very clever and dynamic way to tell the story 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow, here I am new to video editing, nodding my head with such amazement with how beautiful this video is. Seeing things through your eyes is always interesting, beautiful. I can only imagine the amount of work you’ve put into this video, and the amount of consistency and dedication that you have for your talent for you to reach this stage. You are an inspiration, thank you.
Thanks Pia, that’s very kind of you to say :)
Another of your videos about a product for which I have no need, but I still watched every second, beautifully done!
Omg! Another great video! And emotional as always. Thanks for sharing, Philip! You’re the best!
How the heck did I miss that Richmond Hill sunset livestream?! WOW!!!!! Fantastic review as always, Philip!
your videos are very knowledgeable, esthetic ,and very well edited ,and your voice over is clear and soft, phillip.
great &inspairing to watch your reviewes ! thank you!
A very creative video about this interesting piece of gear. It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you Philip !
Great pictures, nice voice, wonderful editing, just the popcorn missing, i love to watch even if i am never not going to get the phone.
i love how you frame ur shots ... as always informative and helpful ...
just love the docs-style of your reviews - unique for CZcams
Thank you!
This seriously motivated me to just get out and practice my video shooting. If this does not inspire someone, nothing will. Beautiful video sequences.
Wonderful video. I purchased this phone when it first came out in the USA. I used it for 1-3 months and then sold it. It’s a very niche product. Really cool but with how much it costs I couldn’t justify using it for how little I think I’d be using it. I agree the app could really use some updates / new features. You are an inspiration. Your review was so thoughtful, creative and beautifully shot. 👏🏼
So many stunning shots there!
Lovely work Philip :) you had me LOL!!! - Thanks for sharing!
With the 1mk 4 now, you can broadcast to CZcams in such an easy manner, thanks for yours and everyone else's input to Sony Philip!
can you? how?
Fantastic images, superb phone/ monitor/ livestream tool.
Your films are always exquisite. Thank you!
always love your work.. one of the best among the channels i follow.. well kind of the best among all the ones i follow.. really motivational.
Thank you!

Great honest opinions and worthy addition to your business
its long time sir.wonderful review. Best one
Fantastic overview of the Xperia Pro 😃
Awesome video as always!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I wish you the best dude!
Thank you :)
Does it work with 4k dci input?
Always great reviews!! And everything is harmonic; colors music, compositing. Love it
interesting filming and content, as always. The Philip Bloom appearing in the screens attached to cameras made me think of the video music of The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star
Loved it. thanks again Phil!
Awesome Visuals :) & a Nice review :)
finally an exhaustive review of the Xperia Pro.
the Definitive review.
too many reviewers focused on the Streaming and its current (months old) limitation and they can't seem to find any use case for it in their mind despite being a creator.
Too many people think using just the camera in their phone is enough, but IMO many also think their front side phone camera just isn't good enough.
for those that also have a full-size camera this is just fantastic.
Thank you Philip to push Sony in right path for developing professionals tools.
Beautiful as always.
I recently got the ASUS Zenfone 7 Pro, and it's a big upgrade from the phones I've had before (except maybe the Nokia PureView 808, I'd love to see that camera in a modern phone with a proper processor, screen and OS), and the stabilizing is amazing for recording while driving, I'm shocked at its performance there, and it has manual video settings, so I've been having lots of fun with that while doing some long drives.
Omg I found the perfect tool to
Live stream my dancing with my A7Siii 😍😍😍😍😍 yes! Thank you so much for this video. I will definitely be purchasing this phone.
I currently can’t live stream my classes but this would allow me teach all over the world 🌎. Even for price I can sell the classes.
Your videos are shot better than most Hollywood films. I don’t even care about this product but I have to watch.
Great video! I'm intrigued with both this and the 1 iii....I still have the original Xperia in my drawer lol. I've loved the Xperias and if I boot up that VERY OLD phone it still works a treat.
Does the 1 iii allow for an hdmi input? (saw something on sony’s site about usb-c to hdmi)
@@JonahLorsung Yes you can, though you need to use an adapter...check out CNET's review where they tested this feature. :)
Thames Television logo ending? Love it.
Gorgeous images
Lovely video and music!!
What a superb thing the 'HDMI IN' on a mobile phone is. I hope this becomes a standard on more phones so that the price becomes a bit more affordable YIKES! Some of the clips on this video are IMHO the best you have ever shot Philip I mean just mind boggling good. One day in my dreams. I enjoy all your videos but this is just so inspiring thank you
Thanks Lee 🙂
Fantastic video, cheers!
Nicely done !
Great video Philip! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Xperia Pro. Also much enjoyed your out and about live streams! I'd love to see more mobile devices to be useable as a field monitor for everyday use! One question: Where can i get that Sony MMI extension you use for the Sony ECM B1 ?
Thank you. Sadly it’s only available as part of the XLR k3m
@@philipbloom ah thank you so much. I couldn’t find it.
Interesting and entertaining approach. The filter on the VO sells it, but is subtle enough that I’m not sure if it’s just my phone.
thanks Dan, the VO is all from the sanken cos 11 lav mic and the tentacle track e. I didn't process it as such,
@@philipbloom Thank you for the info! It must be from listening on my phone.
I was thinking this was such a beautiful overview of the Sony Xperia Pro and since I'm in the market for a new phone I went and looked at the price and availability. It's price affects it's availability to ME. But it is a beautiful overview. of the Sony Xperia Pro!

what a shot!
Welcome back. You've been missed.
Beautifully done 👌
especially the Jarvis quote 🤣
Thanks Chris :)
Always look forward to Phillips reviews
great video and review. can you tell me what you were using under the mic on the cage to allow it to work with out being on the hot shoe. thanks and yes nice phone and screen, but im using my iPhone and monitor + app, and still testing it. at 8.45 I notice you recording at 60p. not pal is this NTSC? I thought we were 25p and 50p? im still learning
Hi Phillip great video as always, I've been looking for a extension for my Sony ECM-B1M but Sony say they don't do one but i noticed you are using on in this video, any chance you can tell me what or which one it is, many thanks
Interesting insights, couldn’t justify it for myself though. Beautiful footage as always.
Wow just wow! Bravo! 👏👏
Cheers Benny
Talks about auto mode camera only and phone name - Typical Samsung or apple paid reviewers
Talks about the features that's built for the phone - Pro Photographers
Really clever video!
Very interesting - I've thought about the experia pro many times, and I could - for a while - even live with the missing features - just for this awesome screen. But I'm still struggling with the price tag. Yes, I know that there is nothing else like this of the market, but still. Still thinking ;) Thanks for the video and the stunning footage.
Thanks as always! Yes it’s very expensive and I really hope they can make it better value with the improvements that I’ve mentioned
Well done!
Well, instantly takes the "best shot and edited phone review in the world" by about a mile.
O Phillip, I do not care what you talk about, your videos are sooo beautiful. Thank you.
Beautiful video 😍
Thank you Jennifer :)
Great video. Question please. Which Flash TTL off camera cord are you using with the Sony mic please?
thanks. Not a flash TTL cord, its the mi shoe relocating cable that comes with the XLR K3M
Imagine if the mark ii becomes a full blown recorder with a full size SD/CFexpress-A slot! Then I’ll pay that ridiculous price no problems.
Very nice video, Would you like to share more information about how you relocate the ECM-B1M. Really difficult to find the accessories to do that from market. Many thanks
Sadly only comes with the XLR k3M
@@philipbloom Thanks
Can be ordered as a service part through a Sony dealer.
I love your style
I noticed you were shooting the screen of the Xperia pro. did shooting the screen cause lines on the screen in the video initially? can I shoot the screen with another camera without lines?
My best content creator do it again !
Just came across your video and I am trying to solve a problem it looks like you solved... what hot shoe adapter did you use to allow you to mount the Sony ECM-B1M to another location on your rig?
Those 21:9 footage look exactly what hollywood movie alike, Love it; however this still is out my reach.. how much do you need to get this lvl?
Another amazing video, Philip and goes without saying that it was beautifully shot. The amount of cat footage was slim but acceptable.
Thanks Gerald! It was a challenge to get them in and without doubt, those rack focuses are totally self-indulgent! :)
Was this a product review? I got lost in the beautiful footage, voice, music, etc...
Paid promotion video.
The bummer for me is that it’s simply not bright enough in direct sunlight - and the lack of focusing/exposure aids don’t help either. It has its uses however (especially the streaming) but it’s not a replacement for my regular monitor which does include the aforementioned focusing/exposure aids and at 2600 nits is plenty bright in direct sunlight.
Yes brighter would be ideal but thankfully the features that are needed for the app are coming.
Could you please tell whci ist the cable and mount that you are using for the Sony ECM-B1M, does it deliver digital or just analog signal? and Could this phone be used as an external recorder?
best
Best . Special Thanks Philip
Thanks Alex :)
While the use of this "phone" with the A7S3 or the FX3 seems a joy, loosing the "touch to focus" abilities on the camera-lcd while using the phone is a major issue! What were they thinking? Do you think that will be fixed?
But it’s the same with ANY monitor you use! No, I don’t think it will be fixed in this generation down to processing power. The FX6 can but that’s a more powerful camera.
I wanted to use a phone as a monitor for my A7S3 for a long time but went with a real monitor (Desview r6) and here are my reasons:
1. Price. This freaking phone is waaay overpriced. In no way I am paying 2500$ for it, just not happening. Desveiw is 210$ :)
2. Desview is 2800 nits and weights 200 gram plus 100 gram a battery that lasts about an 1 hour at max brightness. So its 300 grams on your camera vs 220 with a phone - not a big deal. And you don't ever need the shade. A bit heavier in your bag due to spare batteries, but that's it.
3. Lut support ofcourse
4. Lots of Pro monitor instruments to nail your exposure.
So yeah. This phone looks nice on your camera no doubt.. but its not practical. And dont forget flimsy micro HDMI.
The Livestream feature might be worth for someone though.
p.s. Beautiful shots as always, Philip
really nice
Stunning images you make look easy.
I have just thoroughly enjoyed watching this video about a product in which I had very little interest. Spellbinding videography and who would expect any less from the Master Philip Bloom.
How you doing Mr. Bloom. I’m trying to learn photography and videography and I would like to know can tell what is a good setting. I thank you
I have a learn camera the Sony ZV-1
Ironically the ad I got shown before watching was for Amazon..
W*****s!
How do you generally set the color balance when shooting those very tinted sunsets with rapid changes in colors?
Very easy answer. You do not change it! Leave it at 5600k or whatever your daylight balance is and let the natural colours develop. If you try and white balance during a sunset you will kill those colours!!
@@philipbloom Thanks! That’s my instinct and I was always worrying if this is the correct way because it’s not “calibrated” and sometimes I got scared into auto even.
can you do a review of the Monitor+ app?
Pleeeeeeease, can you give a link to MI Shoe relocation cable you've used here? Thank you in advance!
thanks for taking care of all those cats!
If you were able to record the HDMI input it would be a no-brainer for me, but just as a monitor...tough sell for me at that price point.
I wonder why Sony do not do a version of this phone without the phone .The camera format & features would suit me if it was just a camera. Seems it could reduce the cost & give us an alternative camera which is pocketable .
Do you use resolve as if you record in a-log3 And gamut 3 cine. What do you set in color tab in resolve?
Sorry I generally still use Premiere
29 June 2022...Sony still did not added LUTs on the Xperia Pro or the waveforms...
