- Today's the day: It's time to cut the first hay of the season! I fire up the Farmall 656 tractor and the International 990 haybine, and head out to cut five acres of thick hay. I explain how the equipment works and the cutting process along the way, and how to fix a few common problems that occur when cutting hay with a haybine. Hay season is here!

If only those IH engineers in the late 60’s had the forethought to put Go-Pro mounting brackets on their implements. 🤣
Thank the person who invented the magnet 🧲 mount for the go pro !
The smell of fresh cut hay is like oxygen to a farmer’s soul.
I agree with you
Same bro
I cut about 5 acres here in KY last week. There was only a 20% chance of late afternoon scattered rain on the day I was going to bale. You guessed it, I got about 3/4 of the way finished and a pop up shower soaked the windrows. Only way to guarantee it will rain is to try and bale hay.... Good luck!!
Video Idea for ya: I'd love to see a "Day in the Life" of Hillari! I'd love to see her doing all her chores, cooking, etc. I know she's super busy but it'd be fun to see her do a video about her days on the farm.
My cows saw this video and their mouths started watering.
LoL
That equipment was the stuff in Mid 70s when I was kid growing up on a farm in NC!
Nice job on video!! Lot of work!
Agreed! We had the entire New Holland haying collection on the ranch in California in the 70’s and 80’s.
Hilary! Don't let Pete give up his day job! His narratives & videos very interesting to me!
I can see that farming is no picnic, believe me! When I was a18-19 y.o. teenager, I used to disc, plow, spring-tooth, drive truck during wheat harvest, on the local wheat farms in my area of the country. Back then, it was an idyllic way of life. But I can see that for a farm/ranch to function efficiently, there's got to be a good knowledge of mechanics as well as farming experience. Pete, you are a very fascinating dude, believe me!
The different angles shown while cutting hay makes one respect the engineering of those old machines even more...
I'm an old farm kid from Iowa and Id have to say you sir are an excellent steward of the land and your animal husbandry skills are beautiful .
The cows in the other field are watching you and thinking WINTER FOOD!!! 😂 A couple of farmers in my neck of the woods had 656 Farmalls and they were some great tractors.
Over fifty years since I worked hay and still get a thrill when I can smell it in the air.
Your cows are going to be eating some fine hay this winter. I can smell that hay now. Can't wait to see the MD at work.
“The Eater”.... I remember the huge noise my NH would make when I would send a groundhog through the crimping rolls. Would definitely get your attention!
Love driving a tractor, learned to drive one when I was about 8 years old. What a great memories. ❤️💜💙💚
Loved the different camera angles when you were mowing the hay ...and your jokes! ^^
I appreciate you so much. It's a dying bread, but you are breathing life into it. Thank you
Oh my goodness just watching you cut all that grass is so relaxing, not kidding
Why do I get pleasure in watching grass being cut to make hay? My spirit animal must be a cow..
If you don't know theirs no reason for me to tell you you won't understand
That’s the most fun you can have, running that thang- is watching stuff get whacked! 😄
I've been watching your channel for a while now and I have a new found extra respect for you and all the hard work that farmers provide . It's sad that the knowledge like yours goes without the respect it deserves and let's not forget about your faithful wife and family that stands with you ,may the lord bless all of you.
Great crop, I enjoy watching someone who loves what they're doing.
Pete, you're my kind of guy. Intellectual and practical. The whole world needs us to survive.
lol safety sam... a guy in an office with no work experience. Just use your head and common sence and you will be fine! i love your reaction... in the words of another great channel,.. "I'm not saying this is the right way to do it... I'm saying this how i do it!" LOVE IT
My dad, who just recently passed away, had two IH 990's (9 ft cut) that he pulled with a Farmall 450. My young son and I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.
love the drone shot, you should do more of those they’re fantastic
Hay binders hate Pheasant nests , my Dad had eyes like a eagle and could see the hen nests and would lift the mower sickle bar to miss the nests, we had plenty of Pheasants come hunting season. I greatly miss those days in 60's. .........thank you for sharing your day and videos with us. ...................................Ken&Bev
Becouse of the weather here in Sweden we wont cut until another 2 weeks at least
Love your videos Pete, keep it going!
It's really satisfying to see a job well done.
If it ain’t red leave it in the shed! Love watching those old internationals work. Good video sir.
Your pasture looks amazing. Looks like years of taking care of your soil is paying off nicely!
great video of cutting hay - reminds me when l grow up on the family farm in 50's to the 70's
We just got done with our 20 acres of hay this weekend in Missouri. Similar situation, super thick grass and very thankful for it. Back at my desk job this morning, thanks for your videos. I keep them on in the background.
Camera angles awesome 👌👌👌
Thanks for taking the time to set up and edit so many outstanding viewing angles!
So satisfying to watch
Hay fields look great, so does the IH equipment. Looks like your going to have a great first cut👍👍
Beautiful drone shots
love watching the haybine, the tedder does make my OCD cringe, but I understand the need for spreading it out so it drys faster... thanks for sharing this with us Pete! I feel like I've learned so much watching your channel.
That is some good looking hay!
A lot of work, but it’s looking great!
Happy Boipday Henry! And, tomorrow's video will be a Re-Pete of today's.
🤣🤣🤣 very good
Ratdog, you got him good.😊
Lol goodun! 😂
Growing up in the 80's and 90's on a small farm in Southeast Indiana I mowed a lot of orchard grass hay with a 656 and a 472 NH Haybine. I really miss it, just watching your videos bring back so many memories for me. Anytime I ever wrapped wet grass hay around the rollers, I found the easiest and quickest way was to just cut it straight across the rollers with a sharp utility knife and slowly engage and it will unplug instantly.
Grass cutting ASMR! Thumbs up!
Enjoyed the video. I have put several hours on a 656 hydro gasser.
Thanks for taking us along.
Woah TTWT is over here
Why is this so mesmerizing??? Oh yeah, farmall and hay!!! We love watching your content as soon as it comes out! Also love the new view point from the front of the tractor. Keep up the great vids!!!
The best smell ever. Love fresh cut hay.
Another treat vid Pete. Enjoying the aerial perspective. Wishing your boy a happy birthday!
Looks so familiar. I spent many years on a dairy farm over in Steuben County. Surprising how many memories a kid can make during hay season.
Mowed many acres of hay in steuben county
@@markcollmer4215 we were in Arkport
@@rayhubbard1367 I worked for Hopkins dairy in bath for about 15 years
@@markcollmer4215 We did the Fair in Bath every year. Then moved to the city in MD bit my kids still showed Holsteins at the Howard County Fair down here and made hay so kind of the best of both worlds, and we get to Keuka Lake a few times every year.
It amazes me how good your hay does with just compost fertilizer. It’s got me thinking of starting to save all our compost to put on my pasture to build the ground up!
I swear this guy is a cross between Alan Alda (Mash) and Jay Leno😂 but love your videos great content. Keep the good work up.
My dad called his hay cutter the frog 🐸. It squeezed the juice out so it would dry faster. I helped cut and bale when he couldn’t or when he worked construction in St. Louis. He would stay in city and com home weekends. All brothers and sisters would help in process. That was back in 60’s.
💥Happy Birthday Henry💥
I hope you have a wonderful day. Thanks Pete for another fun video....Now I just wanna go and cut grass and make hay. Looking forward to to seeing you spreading, making windrows and bailing. 👍
Very Cool !! Grass smells good. Thanks for the ride.
Nice crop of hay. And Happy Birthday Henry!!🎂🎂🎂
Oh the sound of the vintage equipment! Can't beat it! How many times will you have to rake that thick cutting? There is nothing like the smell of fresh cut hay. Thanks for sharing! HAPPY BIRTHDAY HENRY!!
I can still smell the freshly cut hay when we were raising cattle. We would cut in late June and be baling a couple of days later. We had an old side delivery rake that would combine two seven foot mower swathes into one windrow. Thanks for posting this.
That old diesel was a
Loud thumper... Could have watched that more working for hours it was hypnotic.
I absolutely love hay making. Thanks for bringing me along.
Good dad joke Pete and wish your son a Happy Birthday 🎉🎂🎈🎁
Great video Pete ! I'm not sure why, but it sure is satisfying watching you mow hay. Love the drone shot. Happy Birthday Henry !!
All the best for Henry!!! 😁💪🚜👍
Beautiful day and great photography. Thanks for sharing your adventures
Pete, these videos are my favorite. You understand so well what your audience wants to see - the different angles of watching the tractor gages, hay bine in action, the before-and-after shots. Now with the drone, you've gone and provided the complete package. Thanks for all your great work on putting this footage together and for sharing it, your farm and your family with us.
Thanks Kieran!
Why is it so satisfying to watch that? All that new fangled equipment you have. I noticed you didn't mention turning on the auto steer? 50+ years ago I remember riding with my Grandpa in North Dakota. he used a H International, sickle, dump rake, Farmhand, and Hay Stack Frames (don't remember what they were called). My Uncle who is in his 70's still has the H that had the farmhand on it. I believe it was like a 1947 model, give or take. I remember my grandfather had new wooden teeth/forks (?) in the shed, since they would hit a gopher hole or something and they would break frequently.
Pete one of the best videos, thank you!
I must be a Loon---sitting here just watching and watching and watching the hay get cut. But I sure do love the smell!!!
Pete, the photography was brilliant. How many camera positions on hay cutting? You win the prize.
Happy Birthday Henry!! Thank you for a great video Pete.
You make me feel primitive.
I go back to a H with a semi mounted sickle bar, and a New Idea side delivery rake.
A few neighbors had crimpers pulled by another tractor.
Watching this I smell fresh cut alfalfa.
Thanks for posting Pete.
Just finished cutting all my first cutting today! Was my first ever cutting of hay and your videos have been beyond helpful also bought a 990 haybine totally by accident but glad I did.
Your knowledge of vintage IH equipment is nothing short of impressive Pete (656 head cool down). And you have excellent senses to detect such a small break mowing through such thick grass with all that noise. Its a beautiful sight to see haying finally begun and your drone shots are amazing. I hope you have a blessed haying season.
After buckin 336 bales off my 5 acres yesterday. I see a ton of bales there!! Looks like good stuff. Love the hayin videos.
What a cool guy
Like the camera angles, the way you explain details.halleluyah.
Happy birthday Henry wishing u an awesome day. 🎂🎁
The ole 990 is doing a good job 👍
Pete please, as someone who has seen what happens when a person gets into the machinery, take all the precautions you can. Have you ever considered green chopping to alleviate some of the passes thru the fields?
Good afternoon pete. Nice to see old machinery running.
Thanks for the video Pete...enjoyed the learning experience...cool jokes too!
I absolutely love the older farm machinery you use and all your useful hints your a very resourceful family and I hope your farm goes from strength to strength x
Happy Birthday to Henry!!
Pete I so much enjoy how you take us along. I especially enjoyed the different camera shots of the cutter in action.
grass looks good - drone shots gave a great view !
My favorite video today. Relaxing to watch
I enjoyed the video. Brought back early memories of cutting hey on grandfather's farm. Best wishes.
Wow that is an awesome crop of hay . Nice!
You plugging up, brought back memories of cutting 6’+ Sudan fields. Those were some long days and nights.
Really enjoy seeing your equipment operate!
Watching the old 990 haybine lay it down brought back memories of my dad using his for our Herfords in the 80's !
@ 12:44 - What a cool shot!
Happy birthday Henry I hope you enjoy your day! Great to see that hay on the ground finally.
Pretty cool, you mowing I could smell it, as my gardeners were here, I had the flashback of being back on the farm cutting hay with the fresh smell of them cutting here and you cutting there!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HENRY. listening to the tractor and cutter lulled me to almost asleep. was up at 4 a.m. to get ready to go to work at TRACTOR SUPPLY. 7 a.m. to 12 noon. very busy Sat. love the sound of that old equipment and tractors.
What a beautiful feild.
very gratifying to watch. Must feel good to get that done
Happy Birthday Henry the mower looks like it does a good job
Great video Pete! I can tell you put a lot of work into this video like all your videos. Thank you for that! Keep it up! I can just imagine how great that fresh cut hay smells.
Looks like a great first cut! Love seeing the old equipment still working, sometimes better than new stuff. ❤️🇺🇸
Thanks for the ride-along
Happy birthday Henry!!
🎈🎉🎊🎈🎉🎊
Excellent aerial shot!
Same as Namdor, Cutting hay looks almost therapeutic, relaxing and satisfyingly productive.
I absolutely loved making hay. It’s always a gamble, but when it’s good, it’s great! Nothing like harvesting sunshine. 😊
More overhead arial shots from the drone. Happy birthday Henry.
