Cutting the Hay Field for the First Time. But I got hurt afterwards.

- I am finally cutting our hay field for the first time. We planted this field last fall, after we amended the soil with lime, phosphorus, and nitrogen. The field has grown really well, except around the edges near the trees. I am using a new holland 451 sickle bar mower on a Allis Chalmers D17 tractor. This is my fist time cutting hay, so it takes me a while to make some adjustments and learn a good technique.

We're getting quite a kick out of watching you use the type of equipment we used 60yrs ago. Never imagined in my wildest dreams I see drone footage of old time haying.
Cheers =^··^=
Well done on showing the reality of a farming life. Most 'city slickers' just don't realise that regardless of how poorly you may be feeling, the farm life goes on - animals must be fed and cared for, chores must be done and next season prepared for by making hay, tending gardens etc. Hang in there Evan - you are an inspiration!
Back pain is one of the worst pains. Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery so you can finish the hay. Thanks for sharing.
Prayers for you.
I am retired but was raised on a working farm/ ranch.
If it would help I can come down and take your hay so it can dry.
We live just up the road from you.
Roy Stacey , That is very nice of you Mr. Stacey. I sure hope Evan takes you up on your offer, because he really needs help.I pray he will. God bless you.
Your a Good Man Roy Stacey, God Bless you.
Good on you Roy! I am a retired farmer in N.C. and available if you need help getting Evan's hay in the barn... -Tony Knight
Aww that's so good of you to make that offer, may your store basket never run empty

I could see the pain in your eyes I really hope it starts feeling better soon.
I’m so sorry you were injured. You did a great job despite the circumstances. 👍👍👍🌟
When you rake, pick the straightest/longest side and start doing rows, then do the “headlands” last in circles. This keeps you from running over windrows when turning around, and baling rows is better than circles.
Sorry to hear about your accident Evan. Godspeed on your recovery.
Love to see Rebecca learn how to bale hay - your star helper would be entertaining.
Praying for fast recovery!
I'm so sorry to hear about your injury, Evan. You were doing such a great job cutting the hay. I will be praying for a complete and speedy healing.👍
Praying for you and a fast recovery. God Bless you Both.
Geez get well soon. Prayers sent for a speedy recovery
Praying you heal quickly and are able to get your hay bales in the barn. God bless you and Rebecca and God bless your farm!
..here's to a speedy recovery.the job looks good to me..keep safe..
I have cut a lot of hay with a sickle mower. The first pass around the field needs to be in a clockwise direction. That will give you an indication of what is in the field and where to run the tractor on the next pass. After getting the first pass finished, turn around and go counter clockwise to mow out your tracks, then turn back around and do the third and following passes.
I would agree with this except for one small point. I would drive at least twice around the field simply because the mower cut is wider that the tractor width and it would mean you would have to drive on another piece of unmown crop.
Further to this I would mow about 5 times round and then choose the longest straight run and strike off driving as reasonably straight as possible. At the other end turn left handed and drive back down over the swath you have just mown mowing a fresh swath. Continue doing this until the width of unmown crop on one side is less than the width of that which you have mown. Then mow right handed and mow one or possibly both blocks to completion.
The main reason for this approach is when it comes to tedding, raking and especially baling long straight swaths make for a much easier driving experience.
@@w056007568 Oh yeah, you are correct, I didn't know the bar was 9'. It will take 2 passes clockwise. Loved the drone footage.
@@geraldskaggs3903 good advice.
I have roughly 100 hours of mowing experience, from what I have learnt is that you want to start with your tractor on the edge of the field and the mower in the field, mow the whole field and do the furthest headland last because there is going to be the most rocks and sticks in closest to the trees that can damage the mower so badly that you could spend all day repairing the mower and not be able to cut it all in the day.
I love watching your channel and the progress you guys are making on the farm. I'm praying that you get healed up quickly.
Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery!
Great job Evan! Sorry to learn of your injury, get well soon.
So sorry you're hurt, Evan. It's been cool to watch you learning new things in an effort to improve your property and run your homestead. Hopefully you can heal up quickly and finish the job!
Haven't even finished the video yet, but those drone shots from up above look so beautiful! After all the debacle with the hay field it is a joy watchin you mow it. Love from Germany!
Farm accidents happen so easily Evan and that is why you should always have someone else around when using farm machinery. An injured back is a real downer for a farmer so you have my sincere sympathies. Hope it gets better soon. Don't let the hay lie unturned as it will rot and then it's a real bummer to get rid off. 👍👍👍
Praying you heal up quickly.
Keep on keeping on mate. You are both doing a great job.
Really fine people have extended a helping hand. Don’t be a hardhead take the helping hand with gratitude. You can always pay it forward. I really enjoy your channel and wish you success.
it is not like the 19 50 to 1990 any more, people are all for them self. you cant get a helping hand unless you have deep pockets..
Nice to see 14 positive responses. I am too old and too far away or I would be there. Keep us posted and heal up. Quickly.
I read all the replies and only 1 person offered to help ........ so where did this comment come from? People were saying IF I lived closer I would help .......... IF .... They don't live close enough.
MiChelle Jaggard Your right, just trying to be positive and encouraging. I am 75 and living in Southern California. I would be useless. I will continue to try to be supportive and positive. Doesn’t hurt but someone always trolling one’s efforts.
Prayers my friend. Hopefully you'll make a quick recovery.
Prayers for a speedy recovery!
A speedy recovery to you. Rebecca it's your turn to turn the hay, you can do it we all have faith in you, make hay while the sun shines, love and blessings to you both from Scotland :) :)
We hope you feel better each day! So enjoy watching you!
Sorry about your injury... I will pray for a speedy recovery for you... Hope you can finish the hay field
I was in pain yesterday with my back for some reason. I never have back problems, it’s always my shoulders.
Come on homesteaders close to Country View Acres! There has to be someone close that can help a brother homestead out. I have never run a hay baler and I’m several hours away or I would. I hope your back heals fast Evan.
It was so relaxing watching from above as the hay was being cut
Thank you so much for sharing what you’re learned. Thanks also to the commenters that have shared their knowledge!
holy shit Evan, keep us posted as to your back recovery. homesteading is a good eye opener, being aware of your surroundings & risk vs reward comes into play more often. hope you feel better, thnx to you both for the vids.
Hope you feel better my family will pray for you.😎
Praying for a fast recovery for you and that God will send the right people to help you with all the work during your recovery! Amen!
Welcome to farming, hope you have some good neighbors like we had growing up. In 2000. My little brother got killed on a motorcycle and the neighborhood came and cut and houses 15 acres of tobacco. It was a blessing 🙏. We tried to do the same when was needed. Good neighbors is hard to beat.. you'll figure everything out with your equipment. God speed
Our wishes for a speedy recovery!
Sorry to hear about the injury. Here’s to a speedy recovery. But it is a great looking stand of hay. Good luck!
Wishing you a fast recovery! I enjoy your videos.

wishing you a fast recovery. You did a good job moving it was your first field.
don't you just love it when a plan comes together. bush hogging and mowing hay was my favorite farm job .
Literally found your channel because of this hay field of yours, was sad to see that you hadnt got to cut it yet just this morning. Now boom here is the video we have all waited for.
We are so sorry for your accident! I wished we lived closer so we could come help you! Prayers for a quick recovery, take care & listen to nurse Rebecca! :)
Good job, Evan! Its hard learning all that stuff! You are blessed to have all that land and the tractor to do it with! Love the drone shots! Also, store your fence posts upright! Build a rack to store them in.
Praying for a speedy recovery!!!
Oh Bud, Back pain is no fun, I been living with it for over 10 years. Hopefully you just bruised and are going to heal real fast. Hopefully you have some friends that will step up and get your hay taken care of. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.
Looks like your first cut was pretty successful given it was all new to you. Sorry to hear about your fall. Hope you can get to raking and bailing in spite of your pain. Remember that your health is more important than the hay.
Ok, hearing it’s a 9’ bar makes sense; it looked longer than my memory of the 7’ Ford we had. Given the tapering out of hay in the outside path, I’d have seriously considered putting my left side next to the edge and foregoing the outer swath. You’ll always have limbs and such out there and can take them out later with a bush hog. Watching, it was clear the hay was not shedding off your end bar. If it was that steep, that might be why, and you got it better when you bent it out. A few acres of hay will polish it up some too. Take a look and see if it needs some angle grinder polishing. One of the comments here and a couple from your earlier videos said to get the adjustments done to move the far end about 6” ahead of the near end. If you don’t have sway bars on your tractor, that’s probably why the outer end lags the inner - physics will swing the end back and the lift bars left. Getting it level helped. Check the outer 2-3 guard sections for wear, chips, and bends - that’s the source of most of your clogs. That’s good-looking hay! It might have been easier learning had it been a little thinner, but you gotta go with what you have. Drone footage was worth it!
You are right on. The drone footage made it easy to see the lag on the outer end of the sickle bar. Also then the hay is thick, I find it easier to cut to the end of a row, life the cutter bar and backup to start the next row. Turning with the cutter bar down in thick hay is tough.
I hurt my back in april using a tiller in hard ground. suffered for a few weeks but better now. I am 78 years old and still try to do things my way....lol. Evan, you may need Rebecca to take a crash course in tractor driving. I know she can do it.
Sorry about your back. Really enjoy your show. Did Dr. Put you on a muscle relaxer or pain pill.? I'll say a prayer.
Where are you located? If you’re near Columbus, Ohio I might be able to help anytime you get in a bind.
Sorry to hear about your injury - hang in there! Hope you heal up quickly but I'm sure you'll find help if you need it. Don't be too proud to ask - you'll be back to lifting stuff in no time. Great job on learning and cutting that field.
That is some good looking hay field I have to say. Keep safe..
Another great video, THANK YOU
Love the videos and your choice in music for the videos. You all are AWESOME take care, speedy recovery.
If you start cutting so you are driving over your back swath you can watch for objects in the back swath. We make 3-4 passes around then go back to cut the back swath. The back swath is almost always the worse grass to cut because of sticks and over hanging branches.
So sorry you are in pain. You did a good job for a first time hay cutter. Praying for healing for you!
Yeaa. Love your vids Evan. Keep up the good work.
Well done you can be very proud of your first time that’s wonderful looking hay 👍🇬🇧💐🎉👍
ICE!! Apply ice, 15 min. on, 15 min off. When I fell and hurt my back the ER Doc said to apply heat, I did and if anything it got worse. When I saw my chiropractor he told me NO heat, do ICE. That's when it started to improve.
NICE looking hay, by the way!
I second that, ice gets the swelling down.
We were told at work if someone sprained an ankle or knee we had 10 gallon water coolers and were told to place the injured limb in the ice water. The ice water causes the capillaries to contract and limits the swelling ....
Sorry to hear of your fall-ice and rest-you will be back up and ready to go in a few-Good luck
My dad was a farmer. He got hurt bad once...run over by his tractor. Survived with a broken collar bone, little pinky broken, and tire tracks up his back. A few days in the hospital and he was back doing chores on the farm! Farming can be dangerous.
God bless and keep you.
Get well soon!~ Prayers
So sorry...hope you feel better. Maybe someone near you can help out. Good luck🍀
We're sorry that you got hurt , have a speedy recovery , we love your videos and I would really like to love on those doggies
Evan I'm so sorry you got injured. I will keep you in my prayers. I did want to tell you for your first try I think you did an awesome job. I loved your use of the drone to show the mowing it was wonderful. I will also pray that you find help to get your hay in. MiChelle

Guy, Iam Praying for your healing, I really wish I lived local I would love to help bale for you
I was so glad that you got to grips with the cutting bar and you got all the hay down but then I was so sad to hear about your back injury. Back pain, ear ache and toothache are the worst pains and I know the agony you are experiencing. Here's hoping you have a speedy recovery and that someone will help you get the hay baled and put indoors.
Praying you have a quick recovery! We all make those dumb moves !😊 Hopefully someone can come and finish the field for you! Looking forward to the next video , rest will do you best!
So sorry you hurt yourself. Hope you are feeling better soon. Sending healing prayer!!!
So sorry you got hurt! I hope all your hard work doesn’t go to waste!
Best wishes for a really speedy recovery .
Fascinating aerial view.
Oh brother, I was on vacation all this week.
Wish would have seen this sooner, if I can help I can help.
Prayers you well up, your wife will do an amaz job of helping you
I've cut thousands of acres of hay in my life, when you start a new piece go clock wise like that if there's anything in the grass along the trees the tractor will run over it, also if you hit something on the outside pass and break something the rest of your hay is already cut
Absolutely. I’ve done just as much. Get the job done then worry about making the field look pretty
Get well soon. Rest up and let your friends and neighbors pitch in and help. ❤️🌸
Haven't done hay since high school. Lots of fun!!!
🦅🇺🇸
wishing you a quick recovery.
Hope you get better soon Evan. If I lived close I would be on your doorstep ready to give you a helping hand.
Hope you have a speedy recovery 🙏
I will be praying for you!
Wow speedy recovery don't beat yourself you live & learn 👍
Get well!!! 🙏☝️👍👍
Excellent photography. Great job.
Wishing you a speedy recovery! If you want perfectly squared bails let Rebecca do the raking and bailing. Women can do anything a man can do.
Dang it, get better! You're doing such a great job.
I love that you are pretty much wingin it. It really motivating. God Bless!
Best wishes for a quick recovery.
Time for Rebecca to learn to bale hay' She can do it . All my female cousins did.
I was thinking the same thing, come on Rebecca you can do it, we have faith in you :) :)
Don’t I they have two sons. Never mind I am sure they are not any better at it than I would be
What is stopping you teaching Rebecca you can both learn together
If she can drive a car she can ted and rake hay at least its not that hard
When my mother lived at home she mowed and raked hay with a WC Allis; even hand cranking it.
Great job, Evan!! We love your channel and have been following you from the purchase of the property. Inspiring on all aspects. Keep inspiring...
Hope you feel better soon! 🌟
As a kid we had an IH 300 and the speed was dependent on how heavy the crop was but you ran the motor at PTO speed and normally 3 gear around 4 1/2 mph in a normal crop. Heavy materials you just slowed ground speed until you were cutting it all with out tear out. The bar needs to be pitched forward just a little and the lower you can cut the easier time you will have. The sweep on the end just needs to move the material in enough to clear room for the mower gearbox. The closer to the root of the plant the less it can lay over. Wore many a blister on my butt from those old seats in the hot Sun 😁 Enjoyed the content 👍👍. We all rush make mistakes only experience can teach some things. Be safe.
It's amazing what Evan has achieved - these comments are a great help though, I'm sure
Get well soon!
So so sorry,I am so happy you didn’t show us you getting hurt. I am praying for a fast recover for you. I am in Florida not close to you,if I was I would do everything I could to help you . I will continue asking the Lord for your healing.God bless you and Rebecca .
