      Yeah, I actually spent a few years deliberately not reading the HH books and avoiding all spoilers. It was because I had always accepted that the HH was basically a mythological event that was never meant to be understood and known and studied. It was basically a prehistoric event.
      I've come around though. GW did a good job with the story, and even maintained some of that mythical/prehistoric feel.

      @@steppenworf121 Theory is easy, application the tricky part. Dunno where the rude part comes from. I've pointed to a source and given a rather cut down principal for painting the hazard stripes.
      Its by no means a cake walk and the rampant use of armour trimming breaks up the wider spaces. This does make it easier to paint the markings in the sense that you're working in smaller areas, rather than wider spaces where the margin error is far tighter
      .
      The plain fact of the theory is that its easier to paint black over yellow, the scary part is ballsing it up.
      I've painted imperial fists with black trim and painting the shoulder pad trim was fear inducing given the amount of glazing that went into building up the yellow.
      Tl:dr hazard stripes are daunting and Duncan Rhodes has a great method of doing and an encouraging manner that makes them less scary, so my apologies if my clipped comment came across as chiding.

    I've been strangly intrigued with the IVth legion. I find Pertabo to be a complicated character thats hard to describe accurately. The buliding resentment of the legion reminds me of Anakin Skywalker's growing resentment for the jedi order. It seems internally they have an inner conflict. Wanting the honor and respect, but not willing to seek it openly. They want to prove their consitency, not simply be given or attain honor. The firm and calcultive legion is a player who is always in it for long game. Finding a way to win, reguardless of the cost.

      The fanbase's opinion of the Iron Warriors is a perfect mirror of the in-universe opinion: cold disdain for a brutally effective but boring and petulant Legion.
      One of the ways you can interpret the whole HH is that it's a parable of the damage a shit father can do to his sons. And one kind of damage that kind of father can do is to create an obedient but resentful son: a child who does what he's told and therefore LOOKS like he's turned out alright...until the resentment bubbles up. A long term problem that's easy to miss if you're an uncaring and inattentive parent. And a personality that isn't as sexy or exciting for the fambase like the angrier and cooler Legions. It's a fitting reception for the Iron Warriors.

    • @soupalex
      @soupalex Před 2 lety +2

      @@ProfDCoy i'm disappointed that much of the community seems to have the opinion you describe of the iron warriors and perturabo, but i guess i can see where it's coming from. they're not exactly presented as the most personable, even on the rare occasions when they do take centre stage in the fluff… i think your characterisation of a quiet and (seemingly) reliably obedient son that quietly resents their impassive or absent father, their hatred rotting them away from the inside, is very apt (i guess primarchs being described as suffering with "daddy issues" and the emperor as an absentee father, is not new exactly, but "if the shoe fits"…)

    • @ProfDCoy
      @ProfDCoy Před 2 lety +3

      @@soupalex oh yeah, I definitely didn't invent the idea of the HH as a meditation on bad fatherhood!
      And you're right that it's sad but understandable that the fanbase treats IW much like Big E did. If anything, it's a weird window into another way to be a good dad: you should take the time to care about your "boring" son and his feelings, even if he's not acting out like your younger brat is. "Outwardly functional" isn't the same as "healthy". It's just temporarily easier to ignore.

    "During the Great Crusade, Venus was dominated by War Witches who fielded armies of Litho-Gholem. The early Iron Warriors Space Marine Legion led the conquest of Venus during the Mehr Yasht campaign."
    One of those metal AF quotes I'd love to know more about that just leads to dead links.
    One of the things I simultaneously love and hate about the setting.
    Also, Ah yes, we're in wars of attrition and have a core elite element that does what infantry does...take positions and grind the enemy in submission.
    The primarch's response..."kill 1/10th of your unit for doing exactly what you're supposed to do...well."
    This is one of those moments were Jimmy Space *should* have leaned in and said..."Um belay that...no. 10% losses for no damn reason is stupid. We're fighting a war. With literally everyone."
    But that would have required him to NOT be the worst Dad in the universe and to possibly *think* about how another being felt.

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 Před 2 lety +7

      Agreed. The Venus campaign sounds _awesome._ Which makes it infuriating that we hear basically nothing about it, much less have the tools within the game to reenact those battles.
      There are so many xenos species, variant human cultures, and specialized technologies from the Crusade that make one think, "that would be really cool to play on the tabletop". The War Witches of Venus and their Litho-Gholems. The Hrud. The Invisible Guard of the "Emperor of Mankind" from the first HH novel. An entire galaxy of cool groups that we hear very little about and never get to play as.
      Instead, we have the Horus Heresy, the event occurring after all those groups were dead or near to it, and involves Space Marines almost to the exclusion of everyone else. If your faction didn't already have either a model range or an organizational framework from 40K, you weren't allowed to participate at all.
      This is not even getting into all the xenos races or weird human cultures that still exist in 40K, but still have no models. Like the Rak'ghul, Catachan Devils, or Enslavers. Imagine if any of these various groups got models. Unaligned so they could slot into any army, or run in Kill Team. Or with rules for running detachments entirely of survivors of the Imperium's conquests, banding together for survival and revenge.

And from a strictly logistic perspective, the Iron Warriors had rock solid geneseed and they "recruited" like monsters. They recovered fine. It wouldn't have been worth it for the damage it would have done to Big E's relationship with Perturabo at the time. Or he could have been a douche and been totally cool with it. You never know with that guy.

    The story of the iron warriors makes me wonder what if things could’ve indeed been different and It was Dorn whose Legion was tasked for siege Warfare while Pet got to make so much more than just weapons.
    Would things play out similarly with Dorn instead becoming bitter and fall to madness? Would Dorn in-fact be perfectly fine and Petrobo would still end up the way he is with his fall? Maybe the Heresy doesn’t even happen or at least can’t be as devastating as it was if Horus didn’t have access to someone with as much ability, resourcefulness and competence as Pet. So many possibilities

    In recent years they have acted on better terms with inperiam due to guilemans return they see a loyalist prinarch with guilemans pragmatism as a win for humanity

  • @ElNick09
    @ElNick09 Před 2 lety +3

    I've long wondered why there aren't more loyalist iron warriors. Think about it: after centuries of unappreciated sacrifice, the legion finally finds their gene-seed father, and what does that 'father' do? Judges their losses marks of failure and their sucesses inadequite, then commands them to beat their own brothers to death because just to teach them all a lesson. You'd think that would be enough of a rejection to redirect some marines feelings of bitterness and paranoia towards Pertarabo himself leaving them uninclined to follow Pertarabo when he turned traitor.

      @@ArbitorIan there were plenty apparently. But being Iron Warriors they didn't go around trumpeting their loyalty. They just stoically got on with stubbornly defending the Imperium and their designated position. Often then being butchered by numerically superior traitor forces rather than sensibly retreating and regrouping.
      But plenty also survived and there are many loyalist chapters with secret iron warrior geneseed even to 40k like the "ultramarine" silver skulls

    • @tehvaniu6a
      @tehvaniu6a Před 2 lety +2

      A decent amount of Iron Warriors did stay loyal, because they were garrisoned on conquered worlds and stayed there for most of The Great Crusade. They didn't spend as much time with the legion and didn't develop hatred and bitterness towards the Imperium. After the Heresy, they either joined the Blackshield Space Marines or ptetended to be part of another legion. The latter is what happened to Dantioch's surviving battle brothers. As for chapters, I'm pretty sure the Minotaurs are confirmed to have Iron Warriors gene seed. The Marines Malevolent are not confirmed to be a successor of anyone, but share quite a lot of traits with the 4th legion. And finally, both the Silver Skulls and the Scythes of the Emperor are speculated by some to not actually be Ultramarine successors, but rather Iron warriors ones, but there's very little proof especially for the Scythes.
