God of War Ragnarok Ending Explained, How It Sets Up Potential DLC And The Next Game

  • God of War Ragnarok took on the complicated task of satisfactorily finishing off the series' current saga much earlier than many would have guessed (especially given the fact that we got six games in the series' previous saga), but it's fair to say that, by and large, the game pulls it off rather well.
Even so, this is far from the end of the series itself- there are, of course, going to be more God of War games, even if it might be a while before another one gets officially announced, and though Ragnarok's ending makes it clear that the series' current arc is over, there are still clues left behind that might point to what the future might bring.
To that end, here, we're going to go over God of War Ragnarok's ending, explaining its most crucial developments, before then moving on to how (or if) it sets up future stories in the franchise.

The story was rushed trash, made a mockery of Norse mythology, retconned characters for the sake of “diversity”, turned a cool female character into a Mary Sue, and the entire premise is about how masculinity is toxic. Don’t believe me? Just read the lead narrative’s Tweets.
Now that these tropes have become comically indefensible and people aren’t having it anymore, the best we can hope for is the devs wake-up.
Loki spin-off would be dumb. They should make two more Kratos games and then Loki comes back jacked and a badass instead of a whiny bitch.

Actually the murals in the first game and in Ironwood, are depicting Kratos death. If you go back and look at the very last panel of Kratos mural at the end of the game, you can see the the previous "prophecy" of Kratos' death, was painted over; With the image of Kratos being worshipped.
I think the moment that Kratos tells Aretus to "open you heart to it", is what made everything change. Letting Aretus know that his ability to show empathy to those who are suffering around him, IS what makes him different than the other GODs in that realm. And the key reason why Kratos made the choice to stop fighting THOR. Instead of fighting him to his death, Like in the mural in Ironwood.
He decided to be empathetic to Thor. Because, He was broken just like how Kratos was in greece. As well as being viewed as a destroyer.
The moments when Aretus and Kratos motivations for fighting in the war changed, that when everything changed in the murals.

When Kratos killed Heimdall his body didn’t disintegrate at all and just remained there lifeless on the floor, same as Baldur in the 2018 version and all the other gods Kratos killed in the Greek pantheon. Could it be that Thor’s act of defiance to Odin and standing up for his family was the redemption needed to cross into the higher plane of existence? If that is the case he can come back in a spin-off and guide Thrud through her adventures and missions. The mural was depicting Kratos dying in Atreus arms as Thor stands over them after being victorious in their fight, however they convince Thor to stop his fight against them and "be better" at which point the prophecy can no longer be fulfilled and they have chosen their own fate. This results in odin being the one to die instead. In the original mural, I'm guessing it's Atreus not wanting Kratos to truly die and putting his soul into the marble instead of letting him die however after changing their fate he chooses to trap Odins soul in the marble which fulfills the prophecy in a different way because it's not his father dying but the All-Father instead.

They mentioned they want 4 more games at least. A loki spinoff could introduce us to the reason why they need to explore other mythologies. Then they could do 3 games in different worlds. That would be my bet. I would love a game with hindu religion (14 different realms), one with scandinavian mythology and maybe a game set in egypt or japan. Several of the artifacts and treasures you find in the game speak of "relics" like the kind you use in the game for magic that are coming from the East and South, describing that they are powerful if used correctly. Almost hinting at the next game and the pantheons we'll get to see. The treasure relic you find from the South speaks of the Mayan Gods and how "Fair and Just" they are, but powerful as well. My theory is this, next game they are setting it up for us to go back home, but in that process we'll go through parts of Eastern mythology (Egypt/Arab), Southern Mythology (Mayan), perhaps Asia although I feel like two pantheons is big enough, but i guess we'll all have to wait and see what the plan is

At the end of Ragnarok when Angrboda shows up to save the day, the way the scene is shot it makes it look like Atreus is pushing Kratos into the realm tear but Atreus doesn't make it in as there is a flash of white light. We then see Kratos running calling out for Atreus which made me further believe that Atreus didn't make it out of Asgard. But then Atreus wakes up in the Holt and everything is fine and we never get an explanation of how Atreus got out. Mimir mentions that Atreus gave them a scare but I didn't notice anything else that explained his escape. I guess he also escaped through the tear?

Kratos wasn't calling out for Atreus as if Atreus wasn't with them, the scene was from Atreus'perspective as he was barely conscious while Kratos carried him and called to him to stay with them. In other words, Atreus was injured from the blast but was never separated from the group. He had turned back to save Frayer but was immediately injured and knocked unconscious (and was likely ejected through the realm tare) and then Kratos and the others rushed to safety while carrying him.

whatever happens in the future, i hope it doesn't undo all of kratos' hard earned growth and i hope it doesn't essentially end up as kratos ultimately failing midgard. i think i'd even be fine with a mainline game focusing on atreus with his dad called for backup, leaving his stability in the norse world intact. whatever happens, i hope mimir comes along for the ride. i know freya coming back is unlikely (you can't have both the leaders just up and leave midgard) but i hope mimir's status as a belt ornament and his experience in multiple pantheons means he can come along

I like the idea about going to the Egypt mythology, (as GoW games are the mayor reason I want to learn about the mythology)... but I think the Norse one is perfect for Kratos's character. And if they do another game, I fear they ruin all the beautiful progress the character have.

I have a question. Most people say that the next step might be the Egyptian civilization. Or any other ancient civilization.
But I saw another video, when I searched “how old is Kratos” 🤣, and it said that Kratos, based on the chronological events in Sparta and the events on the last two games is probably 1000 years old.
Sparta events happened about 500 BC and the events now are happening at about 500 AD.
So basically my question is, if the above are accurate, whats the point of Kratos being in Egypt at 500AD.
Wouldn’t it be more logical to be in the Crusades for example? Or in the future? Who knows…

Someone help me understand what was the reason for faye destroying Loki’s shrine when they see the mural and how Atreus says she betrayed the giants. I know he said she wanted to do that so they wouldn’t see their fate was it their own Atreus was saying or the giants seeing both their fate ?

Basically, faye went against the giants and found her own path. The giants saw kratos dying and atreus joining odin as we saw in jotunheim when atreus was with angrboda. But faye didn’t believe in that prophecy from the other giants and saw her own prophecy, another path where kratos and atreus survive and defy fate. Thats why she went against the giants, in terms of having her own prophecy. That is also why she destroyed lokis and kratos‘ mural, because she didnt want them to see that prophecy of the giants so they can create their own path. Faye taught kratos‘ to open his heart and to always protect atreus and to fight for justice instead of vengance, which is how keatos‘ changed fate and fayes prophecy came true.

@@MK-jz6gm ahhh okay, kinda crazy so there was basically two prophecies that the characters could have gone and ended up in fayes prophecy. Kinda heart warming too because this shows that freya really loved kratos and Atreus (or came to realize that she loved them and didn’t want them to follow the giants fate) and she didn’t get with kratos and have Loki for the sake of a prophecy as kratos and Loki may have initially thought before seeing the last mural especially kratos mural he sees. Thank you for clarifying it!

    ooooh i got a theory
    1. Atreus shall explore the Shinto mythology - The only connection i've found was that the Three-Fold Tomoe symbol is also associated with archery, though I'm not sure if or how seeking Norse Giants would fit into the picture..
    2. Kratos , (maybe Atreus), and Mimir explore Celtic mythology - It IS Mimir's homeland after all, making him fit into the narrative very easily. Some notable names that pop up for context could be King Arthur, Merlin, The Morrigan, and Nimue (The Lady of the Lake, as mentioned by Mimir during one of his tales). I would expect a larger mystery to unfold, driving them to leave the Norse realms in search of clues, enemies, or allies. Mythology also mentions the existence of a Giant :)
    3. Egypt would be the final game - The symbol on Tyr's hidden panel shows the Eye of Ra on the upper left corner, which is apparently symbolic of a great celestial power; one that may bring harmony or cause violence and destruction if mishandled. I think that the larger picture surrounding the theme of war among gods would be appropriate here.

At least 4 years, I’d say add a year to it mainly because Santa Monica is currently working on a new ip and the fact it took them 4 and half years to get a game that was based on the foundation and formula that 2018 laid…. It’ll probably take them more time to make a game that is set somewhere else.plays different and a new story because 2018 and RAGNAROK are ONE story that was told in 2 games.

Well, technically the prophecy is Kratos dying. The point is to show that Kratos and Atreus changed. If you look closely at the final mural it is Kratos' death mural that is painted over, as in fate was rewritten, seemingly by Angrboda as the colors look a lot like her style
