You are correct. Almost 30 years and 200,000+ kilometers myself. Lived in London in the early 2000's, and then in Toronto. The north american attitude is awful, and infrastructure is poor. But when we have protected lanes, they actually pose more danger. People don't observe the law and right of way, and it blocks line of sight.
