She knew some stuff about her son physically attacking and tormenting other students, obviously this death is not her fault, but she knew that her son was possibly psychotic, even tried to find referrals, but i suppose he acted “normal” enough to dispel the worry.

For people saying the dispatcher should’ve sent the police immediately, he did. He dispatched them while talking to her and kept getting more info to relay to the cops. That’s literally how dispatch works

@@xMaddieMuffinyep, thank you. I'd also heard they're supposed to keep callers talking no matter what, so they know they're safe and so they stay on the line until cops arrive on scene. People are getting way bent over things they don't fully understand. Easy to blame and point fingers behind a screen after the fact.

I’ve heard so many 911 calls where the dispatcher doesn’t just say that first to reassure the panicked person on the other end of the line and it makes it so much worse. The first thing out of their mouths could easily be “authorities are being dispatched immediately, so please stay with me and try to explain what’s going on”

The mothers cry was so painful, I had to stop the video and take a moment. I wish I could take that away from her, she will have to live with that forever. She must have loved her son so much and having to know someone you love could do something so horrible must be absolutely horrible. I wish and pray for her healing and peace.

I'm almost always 50/50 on that. Some parents choose not to see the warning signs, some do everything they can.
@@laurazepam8382 We have extremely limited information to go on here, but from what little we've got I did get the impression that at least this mother wasn't ignoring warning signs. She seemed to be aware that there were issues (even if it's hard to really grasp how extreme something can be) and she mentioned that she would push back on his messed up jokes
This is so heartbreaking. I work with people experiencing homelessness and they are much, much more likely to be victims of crimes than perpetrators. This case highlights that statistic. This could’ve been any of the people I help everyday. Just so senseless and awful.
i just watched this yesterday. seeing how invested he was in retelling what all happened was the most disturbing part. shameless. it's awful and I feel so much empathy for Warrens friends and family. I can't imagine how they felt hearing this, especially the reasoning being "no one would miss him, no one would care, etc".
I have all three of Brian's conditions and never once thought to do something so cruel and heartless. I grieve for the uninvolved members of the Cohee family, and of course most crucially Warren, a bright light who only seemed to want to help his community.

It sounds like Warren was a lovely, hardworking man and it would have been a privilege to have known him.
I agree with you and I think the killers should always go unnamed because they are often motivated by notoriety and a desire to "break a record". In reality, people watch the video because they are fascinated by the killer and fascinated by what kind of mind he/she has and how anybody could do what he/she did. Also, we like to feel good about ourselves morally and one way to do that is to compare ourselves with the worst of the worst.
I mean there wouldn't be thousands of people feeling sad for Warren and having increased empathy and understanding for homeless people if Brian hadn't done what he did. Nobody would ever know who he was. I'm obviously not condoning what he did, just pointing this out.
You have to feel bad for the victim but also that poor mother. Having to accept her child did that, calling the police when she knew he had come back home. No one dreams of their kid growing up to do sonething like that 😞
I read his deleted posts on reddit, he talks about his mom calling her a bitch saying how he'd destroy her while she begged him to stop "because I can" this is in 2019 when he was still in high school

I live in a city with a lot of homeless people. Housed people have left threatening notes to the homeless stating they were going to hurt them and dehumanizing them. Homeless people are people. It makes me so angry and sad that this despicable kids harmed this homeless man.
Also I believe the reason they didn’t put handcuffs on him bc he’s white. I watched a video on this early this morning. In the police interview he asked where do they sent people like him. I interpreted it as him recognizing his privilege. He’s so proud of what he did as if he expects to get famous over it. This is so horrible.
They said he was on the autism spectrum. He's autistic and people with autism don't process things the same as everyone else. It's a reach to automatically assume he feels a certain way with no evidence. It's a reach. He lumped himself together with criminals, that doesn't sound like he's sees himself as "privileged". He was cooperative, special needs and non resisting in any way so they didn't handcuff him. They probably didn't want to be accused of being aggressive towards someone with special needs. In today's society with people like YOU jumping to conclusions with no evidence just to have a "gotchya" moment. This pos is disgusting and will be in jail where he belongs and I think you and people like you need to be more self aware and stop focusing on the wrong things.

The way he told the officer “you can put cuffs on me” and his tone when he first told officers he had a human head and hands in his bedroom, I think he was *wanting* criminal treatment. I don’t think him saying about “people like him” was because of privilege, I think he wants to see himself as a dangerous murderer.
If that idea is true, they would have kept him out of cuffs to not empower him.

Just to clarify. They dispatch police, while you're talking to them.
Them asking you questions to get more information does not mean the police aren't already on their way.
They could say that though. Its a lot easier to give additional information when you have assurance that help is coming. When they dont tell you someone is coming and just keep asking details it can feel like theyre making you “prove” that help is needed and that causes additional distress.
Yeah and a large part of the questioning isn't to actually get all the little details, it's to get the caller to focus on a task so they dont lose their absolute shit at such a horrifying scenario

My best guess is they want to keep him calm and "friendly" to be able to get as much information out of him as possible. With a DUI you know exactly what you've got, you do an easy test and that's case closed right away, but with something like this you need cooperation. The voiceover mentions several times that the officers are trying to build rapport and get him to talk, that one officer even pretended to be interested in and impressed by his knowledge of body decomposition to get info out of him.
That all being said, they should most definitely have handcuffed him

I feel that the scariest part of this whole thing is, if events unfolded slightly differently, or if he had taken more precautions w/ evidence, he likely could have gotten away with it. For at least a little while.
Back in 2023 in my town we had a similar killing and attempted killing. His first victim was a homeless man that the whole community knew. He sat on compassion corner. Then it was a University student who was killed 2nd. Then the last victim that was attacked was another homeless lady who was camped on a main road. It’s such a shame that these people think just because these victims are homeless they wouldn’t be missed. Rip Warren Barnes you will always be remembered.

Probably because having stems on you in direct evidence and in this situation he (at the time) was still “innocent” and they need to tie him to the crime first. You can’t handcuff off hearsay and assuming.
@@liz3169 A bag of body parts isn't "hearsay". The police could easily justify cuffing him out of fear for their own safety, and that would be an entirely reasonable fear in this case.
I knew Brian in highschool. Very strange dude. It’s truly so strange and bizarre to have such a crime happen in GJ, especially one so morbid. Everybody knew Brian was weird, and one of my teachers was interviewed for the true crime doc and said that he wasn’t surprised when he found out he murdered somebody. I wasn’t surprised either, his nickname at my HS was Dahmer and he wore it with pride. I hope he rots in jail, he himself said he would probably get only 15-20 years. If he ever gets out he will reoffend.
That’s actually insane, I can’t imagine how surreal it is to see this as someone who went to school with this guy. I heard a lot of people who knew him weren’t surprised by his actions
Crazy that so many people describe him as such and are not surprised but no one stepped up and was like "Uhm, maybe the guy should go and get some better care".
Do you have any idea what the mental healthcare system is like in the US? The price of care alone is astronomical. They probably did step up and tell people that he seriously needed help. They probably lived in fear that he would shoot up the school. Literally everyone could have stepped up and tried to get him help, and it most likely still would have failed.
My mother worked as a teacher for kids aged 13-15 for well over a decade, and she has said that you can see how some people will commit horrible crimes and it's just a matter of time. And there is not much anyone can do, because you can't force an innocent person to get psychiatric help or whatever just because you think they seem like they might become a r*pist or m*rderer at some point in the future.

I hate this so much. As a mortician - he has no idea about the stages of decomposition. That poor victim was just a pawn for this guy's sick game. UGH it makes me so mad. I also hate that I'm in the same state as this guy. I'm thankfully in Denver, though one of my embalming contracts has a location in Mesa County. YIKES!!!!

I worry about how popular true crime has become. There are people out there who want infamy and notoriety (even if it means being a murderer)… they want people to talk about them, know their name and face. So terrifying.
Serial killers were famous in the 70s and 80s as well. I don’t think giving them catchy nicknames like zodiac killer and night stalker is much better. True crime includes books and any journalism about the crime. Some people cross the line of making it into entertainment but informative true crime content is not bad in itself

As a dispatcher, I can assure you police had already been dispatched. While they’re getting there, they need to know if there are any weapons in the house, the sons name in order to see any previous convictions, they need to know how many people are in the house, if there are any pets that need to be locked in another room etc. all risk assessment and safety questions so that the cops don’t show up and we have two men dealing with a 19 year old with assault weapons in his closet.

I watched the full video on the channel Explore With Us and the way he describes everything in great detail with a smile and acts stuff out is so disturbing. Also his family and friends and school all saw warning signs and ignored them. The school tried to tell his mom he exhibited concerning behavior but she didn't want to believe anything was wrong with her son.

But that is because you don't actually know how 911 works. They are asking questions and THEY have sent for the response. They have to get as much info on potential dangers as fast as possible. They may not have the time to calm the mother's nerves, because informing the officers of potential dangers is more important. They don't know how close the closest responding officer is. See they sit in front of a computer and on that computer they are also relaying information to dispatch. That is why in like 98% of all 911 calls the Operator keeps talking trying to find out about the situation and the person says "just please send someone" and they almost always respond "they are already on the way" But you need to answer my questions. You think it's being dumb, but they are doing their job. Also, in most areas the protocol is to send a unit even if it's a miss call to 911. They send people to check because, you never know if someone has grabbed the phone and hung up on the person or IF someone has entered into the room with a gun trying to control the conversation. That is why the 911 operator is trying to obtain WHERE THE SON IS. It is to increase the situational awareness for the officers who are about to come in contact WITH A KILLER. Also, they do have to try to figure out if it is a prank or true. Regardless, the entire time they are asking questions they are communicating with dispatch through the computer.

I watched the doc, and Brian’s mom said that he took special effects classes, and that he at one point kept fake blood in his trunk. But overall I think the PD looked at this unassuming young man and felt okay with treating him with kid gloves, even if there’s strong evidence of a grisly crime

In defence of the dispatch, as soon as they answer they put it in the computer and it sends out to all the cops computers and the closest free cop goes. So even tho they are on the phone talking... there is a cop already on the way. They just stay on to get as much info as possible and keep her on the phone to know she;s safe.

People already dehumanize us, we don’t need to be lumped together with a sick freak like this guy.
I also feel like it’s unnecessary information. I mean if someone with anxiety commits a gruesome crime you wouldn’t necessarily put that they have anxiety because what does having anxiety have to do with committing a crime? Like why does this guy being autistic matter at all to this case? Because he shakes his leg in an interview? Even neurotypical stim like that under pressure.
It just stigmatizes neurodiversity in my opinion because unfortunately it’s easy for people to see a person who is or has xyz being a bad person and then think it’s a universal thing, that all people who are/has xyz are bad.
You are right, and it does contribute to the stigmatization to those with autism and ADHD. It does matter to this case however. Many school shooters were autistic (Elliot Rodgers, Nicolas Cruz, Adam Lanza, Seung-Hui Cho, probably more) and they did what they did because of total social or romantic rejection, obsessions with murder, and lack of theory of mind. It matters to Brian's case because the autism here clearly contributed to the fascination and obsession with forensics, anatomy and murder as well as the lack of empathy (which might just be alexithymia paired with a lack of theory of mind).
I mean I also have ASD (and maybe ADHD) and I have had people jokingly call me a school shooter or not so jokingly (even though I would never ever do anything even comparable and don't even like to kill mosquitos) and I don't appreciate it so I get the stigma. In general, society does not understand any mental disorders and usually has a stereotypical idea of what autism or ADHD means. I'm better off not saying anything God forbid they start talking to me like I am 5 and being blatantly disrespectful like I am stupid. Best thing you can do is show people you have prosocial intentions and have an air of confidence. Idk though, some people will always remain ignorant.

This is my home town. Its so weird hearing people talk about it. But as for my commenting. This school district/system and mental health care we have is a god damn joke. I wasnt anything like Brian with the urge to kill but i was a weirdo depressed goth kid bullied by everyone. I was called the shooter type i got "help" but more like talking to a wall.

So weird! I just watched this case yesterday on the CZcams channel Explore With Us. They don't sensationalize cases. They stick to the facts and give you the real released footage. It's another case of the system failing in so many ways. 😞 Well... The justice system actually did serve justice here. But there were so many red flags in this guy long before he committed murder.

As someone with diagnosed ADHD, Autism/ASD, and Depression, I don't think those details are relevant. They don't contribute to a person being like this. Autism is wildly misunderstood and stigmatized, but it doesn't make you more predisposed to antisocial behavior. Autism is not antithetical to having a deep capacity for empathy and humanity. Just having those details sprinkled in amongst descriptions of this crime implies they have any relevancy to how someone could be like this, and that's just... objectively harmful to people like me, who already have to fight tooth and nail to be accepted as normal human beings. Autistic/ADHD/Depressed people have the exact same capacity for empathy and humanity as any neurotypical / allistic person. It's... idk man. Just disheartening to get blindsided with that kind of subtle hurt from a creator I otherwise very much enjoy and respect.

For people saying the dispatcher did the right thing, you know it’s literally the job of the police to identify body parts and shit like that? Not the general public? That shit is traumatising, police are trained to deal with that shit. The dispatcher was so disgusting to keep pushing the woman

The fact they didn't handcuff him is crazy to me. I had a warrant out for my arrest in another state (the misdemeanor charge was thrown out later in court because it was bs) but I traveled to the state I had the warrant in and willing turned myself in and they still handcuffed me for intake. Like I said it was only a misdemeanor charge, not first degree murder.
That 911 operator was so frustrating. The awful "human" who did this crime is so disturbed. The cops who saw the blood from the car are so negligent as well. What a mess of a situation.

It was not his race. He was acting oddly un-confrontational and gave himself up immediately. Had he ran, or tried to fight, he would not have been treated the same way.

I know officers need all the info and this is how dispatcher's are trained but when I need help I need help, not a therapy/detective session. They need to train them to ask like the most basic "armed? unarmed? Is he dangerous?" questions and that's it. I know the cops were already on the way BUT F*CKING SAY THAT. You always hear about how it's chilling to talk to a killer. I've never seen it so clearly in evidence as this. He's so casual. He didn't care at all. As an aside, how was a man with a job and a ton of people showing up to "support" him, not able to help give him somewhere safe to sleep?
He definitely shows 100% signs of being highly autistic, and having lack of emotion/remorse is a huge sign. His parents should’ve had red flags from the moments his “dark humor” started being “dark” and not humorous

I was sort of implying, finding him help through a program that offers shelter. He was working, he enjoyed reading, so he seems like he'd be a great candidate. Funding is always being cut from those kind of programs though so who knows.@@ericaallisonc
