    A cousin of mine just sent me a link to this - I am the owner/driver of the 69 GP.
    As one can see - the car needs a cosmetic restoration - but the educated among you know just how much bodywork costs!
    The car is mechanically restored and reliable.
    The 99.5 MPH is the fastest ET the car has ever reached in the standing-start quarter mile.
    NOTE - many pure-stocker run 3.90s (as my friendly Wisconsin opponent did here) or deeper.
    I do street drive the car, so the car as the stock 3.55:1 axle.
    My goal - and I am nearly there - with those 3.55 gears is to turn 100 MPH and 13.99. Now I just have to figure out how to get out of the hole better and shift just a tad quicker. My baseline is from a 1969 Car and Driver Magazine test, where in much better air (Eastcoast - probably at Englishtown, NJ) a Royal Bobcat (Royal Pontiac of Royal Oak, MI) "super-tuned" 69 GP with the same 428 HO engine, M-21 4spd (close ratio) and 3.90 gears ran 13.98 at 102.1 MPH.
    Thank SO MUCH to Cars and Zebras for posting this!

He had a tri-power GTO that he dropped off for service. When he called to ask about the status of his car, the dealer stated, "What car?!?" The GTO was stolen - never seen again. He then ordered the GP you see.

    4300lbs w/driver running 99mph was an unexpected result . Seems pretty respectable for what it is. My grandfather worked at Pontiac from 1926 (first year) till his retirement in 1970 the last stamping die he worked on was the 69 Gran Prix hood, guess he saved the biggest for last. Hoods are absolutely huge on those cars. RIP grandpa. Pontiac motor division Plants #14 and #15. 44years. I was curious what a 428 HO 4-speed would run. Now I know. Great video.

    In the old days, the Buick 401 was referred to as a "nail valve". The valves bearing resemblance to nails due to their small diameter. The "nail head" moniker seems to have taken over in the last decade or so. Either way, that old 401 was no joke. My dad's 65 Electra had that motor and one time I buried the 120 mph speedo by about 1/2 inch. If the 65 GS cars would have gotten the "switch-pitch" Super Turbine trans (early TH 400) as an option instead of the Powerslide 2 speed, Jan and Dean would have been singing about the Buick.

      In my neighborhood they were called "Nailheads" for as long as I can remember. I saw one in a junkyard with my cousin when I was 12, so that was about 1979, and he said, "Look, this is a Buick Nailhead. You can tell by the valve covers." Maybe it was the people you hung out with specifically but I used to see them in hot rod magazines around that time being called Nailheads too and I finally knew what they were talking about thanks to my cousin.

      By "Powerslide", I assume you are jokingly referring to the Powerglide transmission. Buick did not use the Powerglide; they used their own Super Turbine 300 transmission with variable pitch torque converter. Other than having only two forward gears, it had nothing in common with the Powerglide. But I agree, it would have been nice if they'd offered the Super Turbine 400 three-speed as an option.

Because it was not sold here new it had to be weighed for registration, it was 20 kilograms over 2 metric tonnes (4,453.3 lbs) with all fluids, spare tire and no driver. How then does the above Pontiac Grand Prix (basically a Monte Carlo platform) weigh 4304 lbs?

    • @joez996
      @joez996 Před 2 lety

      The 4304 lbs was with what I think was close to a full tank of fuel, factory jack, spare and - my overweight (FAT) butt!
      Let us take me out - and probably some other stuff in the car, cleaning supplies, helmet, etc. The car would still weigh around 4050 lbs. Full frame - a G-body frame, which is based on the longer 4-door A-body frame, so yea - over 4000 lbs.
      I do have a Lakewood scattershield as opposed to the light-weight factory aluminum piece, so there is another few pounds added for that; add a shaft hoop.
      The only "ballast on the scales" was probably whatever I ate the night before - which I think was Applebee's in Greenville......
