  • Follow along as I install LED light pods on my trailer to act as reverse lights. These lights are wired into the auxiliary wire on the trailer wiring harness. When connected to the truck it is connected to the reverse light circuit of my Ford Superduty.
    Here are the lights that I used for this project.

      Thanks Oscar for the kind words. Yes, these lights are very bright. I haven't really adjusted the lights after I've set them. I'm sure you could get much more coverage. I was looking for concentrated light right behind the trailer as I'm in no danger of "out-driving" my lights. If I were using them more for working I would probably point them up a bit but they currently light up my tail gate beautifully.

    Good mod. I have nearly identical trailer with similar lights, 2 front facing, 2 rear facing, and 2 for the sides. All on separate relayed switches.
    I added a diode to the rear lights and ran my reverse 12 volt lead to the diode, so now they are dual purpose. Work light and reverse.
    Highly recommended.

    Hint: Soap the wire to facilitate it going thru the grommet (liquid dish soap works well) without harming the wire or grommet

    Next time, try drilling with a smaller drill bit to make a pilot hole, then follow up with the larger hole or successive larger holes if the hole is big. That way the bit doesn't wander and it's easier on the bit so the sharpness will last longer..

    Is there any way to just wire them directly to 4 flat plug? Then just plug it in?

    • @shooshinejonnie
      @shooshinejonnie  Před 2 lety

      A four wire flat plug does not have a reverse light wire. You would have to wire them to the running lights and then add a switch so the light wouldn't be on all the time.

    • @shooshinejonnie
      @shooshinejonnie  Před 5 lety +2

      Thanks for watching Charles. I'm not sure why you're reverse lights would blink with the blinkers unless there is a crossover somewhere. Do your blinkers come on when the reverse lights come on? Somewhere there is something bleeding through or connected that shouldn't be.
      Set up to mine? With a 7 pin connector for your trailer?

      @@quoleo check the truck first. I sometimes jump the gun and try to fix one problem and it turns out to be something else completely. Take your tester and see if there reverse light circuit is blinking with the blinkers. At least you can rule out one or the other. If you lookat 7 pin wiring diagrams online you can see that there are several different ways to wire these up. I believe the most common way is for the center pin to be the backup light circuit. That would be the yellow wire on most trailers. However there are different ways that manufacturers wire up so you would have to verify that these wires are not somehow tied together. Good luck. Let me know how it turns out. If you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask.

    Hey Anthony, I also mounted 2 led lights to my trailer to use as reverse lights. I noticed in another video of yours that you can also turn on your lights via a switch in the back of your trailer. Can you explain how you did this? That's exactly why I got my lights. I want reverse lights AND to be able to turn them on while parked. Maybe you can show a wiring diagram of how yoh did that? My truck has a flat 4 wire plug and a 7 wire plug. Trailer has a 4 wire plug at this time. Any help would be appreciated.

    • @shooshinejonnie
      @shooshinejonnie  Před 5 lety +1

      I just recently did an overview video of this:
      czcams.com/video/Eah4354s9d4/video.html
      The reverse lights are tied into the reverse light circuit of the 7 prong plug on the trailer. You'll have to find the one used on your trailer. For the switch in the back: I tapped a wire into the hot side of that circuit to run to the on board battery. I added a switch in between so it would only come on when I wanted it to do so. You won't have a reverse circuit on a four prong. If you want to convert to 7 prong I would recommend something like this: Auxbeam 7 Way Trailer Plug Inline Trailer Cord with 7 Gang Junction Box www.amazon.com/dp/B07DXLDNMK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_3dAvCbWEWYN2Z
      If I would have the truck connected and turned on the lights it would simply power the reverse circuit from the back to the front. It would turn on my reverse lights on the truck. Since everything is 12v you shouldn't have any issues. If it makes you more comfortable you can add an inline - one way flow only diode.
      If that was as clear as mud you can email me at shooshinejonnie@gmail.com and I'll send you an actual diagram since I can't add photos here.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.

    is the difference between a 4 pin and 7 pin that the 7 pin is wired for reverse lights?

    • @shooshinejonnie
      @shooshinejonnie  Před 4 lety +2

      4 pin is for running lights, turn signals, and brake lights only. 7 pin adds reverse lights, electric brakes, and 12v auxillary charging.

    I see you are unfortunate enough to own a Homesteader trailer. I have two of them. They are absolutely the worst trailers on Earth!
    I see you caulked behind the lights you installed, Homesteader doesn't bother with any of that.
    Every single light on their trailers has no gasket behind it, no caulk, no nothing. Every time it rains water would pour in through the holes behind the lights and flow across the floor. I had to remove every single light on both trailers and seal the lights like they should have done when they were built. The doors have very poor seals on them and I had to upgrade the gaskets on all the doors.
    One of the smaller trailers I own is a Patriot which was built so sorry they stopped making it after word got around. The Patriot flexes so much in the front that the sheet metal split out over the screws and has huge cracks in it.
    Homesteader trailers are the worst!

    • @shooshinejonnie
      @shooshinejonnie  Před 4 lety

      Thanks for your feedback. I haven't really had any issues with this trailer. It is a homesteader Hercules which I believe is the top of the line. I did replace all the lights with LEDs and sealed behind them. I didn't notice any leaking before I replace them. some of the bulbs were wearing out and getting some corrosion so I just changed them out since they were nearly 15 years old.
