    1:44 this is a great point. When it comes to age, I focussed too much on the rubber itself and not the steel.

    I periodically spray 303 Protectant on the ouside walls and the tread . Will also do the same on the inside to resist drying out and cracking .

      Remember to keep in mind the conditions of the tire during your use. If you typically go through tires in 2-3 years then most likely will be fine. Just keep an eye on how the sidewall and tread looks periodically. If it shows signs of premature fatigue, talk to the dealer about warranty. But if for the life of the tread, they perform fine, then use this information as a bargaining chip in your next tire purchase as buying a 2 year old tire should gain you some negotiating ability.

    No set expiration date for tires universal however in our area we have a tire expiration of 5 years other countries common is 6 years mark and advice to change when still tread depth and tire condition allows use but for me I change every 5 years from tire production date

    • @ThePitStopTirePros
      @ThePitStopTirePros  Před 3 dny

      Monitor the condition from the items listed in the video. If you see any signs of premature wear like dry rot before the tires have reach 2/32 make sure to stay in contact with the installer. If you purchased your tires from a big box store (discount, or big o, etc.) make sure to communicate that early. As they in most cases are terrible with long term warranties.

  • @QnA22
    @QnA22 Před 3 lety +2

    Great vid! I wonder about buying tires of several years old in a tire shop? Can the rubber be trusted or should we be cautious as we dont know the conditions they were kept in? Or even one pair of 2 year old tires and another pair of 3 year old tires? Could the compound be different and possibly have disastrous breaking behavior?

    • @ThePitStopTirePros
      @ThePitStopTirePros  Před 3 lety +1

      As a rule of thumb unless the tires came from a vehicle someone previously owned we will typically not install them. On a used set of tires, it’s kind of a toss up for the conditions and since tires are the only thing between “you” the driver and the pavement new tires are the best option. But yes manufacturing dates, even for the same tire (size, make, model) can have differences which is why whenever manufacturers issue a recall its only for a specific point in time for the selected tire and not the entire production.

    • @QnA22
      @QnA22 Před 3 lety +2

      @@ThePitStopTirePros Thank you for your swift reply. Yes, sorry, I am referring to new tires, not previously owned ones. Aha, so indeed, different years of production is less advisable.

    Wow thank you for the great info. I know some guys who are selling people tires that are over 8 years old, but they don't have the dry cracking. Do you know if there is a scam where they are putting some type of sealer to make the tire look good? I got 4 used tires from the guy and all 4 are over 6-7 years old

    • @ThePitStopTirePros
      @ThePitStopTirePros  Před 3 lety +1

      We experience dry rot in majority due to our low humidity typically under 15 percent. But as tire professionals the likelihood of tires having an issue due to their age is much much higher than those under the typical 7 year window of sale. It’s not to say that you are going to have an issue but the chances are much higher, also there would be a vast difference in someone storing old tires outside in the elements versus in bags in a climate controlled garage.

    ...my experience we bought brand new Altis Toyota 2017 after 5 years when the speed is 60 to 80 klms per hour i heard roaring sound it is the tire that roar we change the tire and the an usual sounds gone.....*)

    • @ThePitStopTirePros
      @ThePitStopTirePros  Před rokem

      It’s difficult to decipher, but from your explanation it sounds like the tire was producing road noise at a certain speed. Typically large lug tires have a tendency to produce more noise especially when they start to wear a “cupping pattern” or individual tire tread blocks wearing unevenly. This can be caused by lack of rotation, or suspension issues. But having a tire inspection should be the best option.

  • @brightonmusic
    @brightonmusic Před 3 lety +2

    Very helpful! What is the oldest tire I should buy? I recently purchased new tires and they are 2 years old. Does the manufacturers duration date start when the tire is mounted or from the date it is manufactured?

    • @ThePitStopTirePros
      @ThePitStopTirePros  Před 3 lety +7

      Great question, the duration is from the manufacture date. So a two year old tire gives you about 5 years drivability depending on the useable tread depth left on the tire. With any used tire, checking the manufacture date, condition of tread including: tread depth, dry rot conditions, bead condition (ring of the tire that seals to the rim), and inside of the tire condition to ensure no damage from driving while under inflated and proper size fitment, are the steps we typically take when installing used tires on any vehicle.

    • @ThePitStopTirePros
      @ThePitStopTirePros  Před rokem

      There are a few factors we pay attention to when installing a set of used tires: are they the right size, are they a matching set, what are the depths of the tires, are the DOT dates fairly new, do the tires look cracked or rotted including the tread, is it missing pieces of tread or damaged anywhere. Those are what we are looking for to determine safety for a customer who’s putting used tires on a vehicle.

      That’s three to four years old depending the on week manufactured. Should be fine but I would ask for a discount since your typical usable life avg has been cut by 50-60%. So use it as a negotiable tool to get a better deal.

    With respect, you defeat your own logic. Tires do not expire based upon a date stamp. Tire serviceability is based upon the condition of the tire at inspection. Things like heat cycles, treadwear, balance, cracking, bulges, curb hits etc. factor into the life of a tire. It would be more useful to teach people how to look for and identify tire deterioration than simply panic over some date stamp. I have driven safely on tires much older than your stated 7 or 9 years old, and I have a set of tires on my F-250 which are horribly cracked and worn at 5 years and less than 20k miles

      I posted the four page sheet listed from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration / US Department of Transportation) in the description. This goes into more detail the subject matter listed in this video as well as subjects covered in other channel videos. As mentioned in the video, as well as all four pages of the NHTSA bulletin, tire age based on DOT serial identification is crucial to the information needed to establish transit safety according to the safety administration. I would implore anyone with information they think would be beneficial to consumer knowledge about tire and safety to make a solid video giving the public a deeper perspective to advice you would like to give, we believe that is a much more affective way to communicate knowledge as opposed to trolling tactics in an effort to inform. We look forward to your upcoming videos highlighting what you think is important to public knowledge and opinion.
