Since I have a service dog she carries some of my stuff when I go hiking. Not much just an extra liter of water, and usually beef jerky or a snack of some kind. She also carries a small 4x4 tarp for herself and a light fleece blanket and about a 4lbs bag of her own food. I carry her water dish with me just because her pack is too small. I have seen many large breed dogs as well pull carts with items in them. But as you said they can only carry about 1/4 their weight. Just nice to have a friend.

    hey Dave!
when it comes to pack animals, did you consider pack oxen?
pack oxen were used during Gold Rush up north, and in South Africa, and both times in conditions that killed horses.
    advantages are:
over goats: can defend against cougars, bears, etc., no fear of water, and can stand cold weather much better.
over equids: cheaper, calmer, less prone to injury, no fear of water, can carry much more, better on marshy terrain.
google draft animal forum on pack oxen!!!
    a heads-up! ;)

@cdltpx I am not Dave but stingray is often substituted for scallops in resturants and is quite tasty. They use circular punches to cut the pieces out of the wings and give the meat the round shape scallops have. I just got back from Florida and learned this from a relative who lives there.

What a brilliant idea. I live in town, but now I want a goat. And you said you had tongs in your pack, but I was just thinking that maybe if you had chopsticks you could also use one of those as a drill in the bow-drill method of firestarting. God bless.

You can find DIY dog harness info on the web pretty easy if you chose to make one for yourself but they are not very expensive to buy and some feed and seed stores and pet stores carry them. The packs you use for Tanner can be worn over the harness if you still need to utilise them as well. I hope this is some sort of help to you that you may not have thought of.

You might put a couple of road flares in the goats pack. Those can be used to signal, start fire and will burn long and hot enough to dry out wet wood.

If I ever get the space for it I love the idea of a pack goat. Goats in general appeal to me. They seem more feed efficient than cattle and require less space overall. I'd be tempted right here in suburbia if I thought I could get away with it, but the chickens are already pushing it.

  • @CyrilODST

@AJ14615 Another reason,is that a Survival Kit isn't always set in stone. You're gonna find something that suits you a little more than something you used to have, or something that goes well with the items you already have. Don't limit yourself to just taking Dave's 10c's and then never touching your kit's setup again. Always search and experiment to find what best suits you. I like to pack 6-8 clothesline pins, so my wet socks don't end up in my fire.

@cdltpx I know where you are coming from with the flounder. I gig for them at St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach when I go there camping on vacation. They have a kids wading area at the rock jetty that collects flounder at night. I use a headlight like Dave has and a gig on an extendable paint pole that works good for getting them from far away when they are skittish. I am from central Alabama out in the country by the way but I love all seafood lol.

I am pretty sure he has covered all of them, in depth, at least a couple times over! You shouldnt show up at vid 500+ and ask simple questions about fire, shelter, first aid etc... I have been following Dave for at least a WEEK now and am sure he has covered all these topics!

an old car tire with supported and nailed to the top of your chopping block.. allows all the wood to stand tall and still (if you load up the tire) and it chops just as easily without flying off... less bending, more chopping... the less you have to touch a pice of wood the better :) though your camp won't look as 'rustic' and 'woodsy' it's how do you put it.. functionable not fasionable and not unreasonalbe to find an old tire in a 'grid down' nomadic survival situation
