  • Since Bethesda are trending in the news (and not for a good reason), Craig and Heather discuss the situation they are creating for themselves as well as a somewhat revised opinion on Starfield and what Bethesda need to do in order to turn things around.

No amount of tinkering with an engine can fix a fundamentally bad story

This! I'm so tired of people telling me story and good writing don't matter. Can't play this game because of how awful the writing is. Bethesda was never great but they've fallen so far from the days of Morrowind.

I remember when people complained about No Man's Skys planet's being barren. Players didn't know what barren planets were untill they experienced true barren.

Lol at "Remove 500 planets" well said.

  • @bruoche
    @bruoche Před 5 měsíci +3

Alternativly, rather then remove planets it could be intresting to have the information of what ressources to expect in a planet before going to it, so you know not to explore a useless empty planet but still having the option to to keep the liberty Bethesda want to give
(kind of like how lethal company tell you how much money there is to make on a moon you're on, so you can decide if it's worth risking to go to it)

Are you making any changes to how you review games considering such a large change in your rating over time. It comes across like your opinion changed based on the public response not your own judgement.

    • @Amalgamingle

I can see why it looks like our opinion of Starfield has been influenced by public opinion but that is not the case. Our Quickfire Review was based on our initial impressions after playing Starfield for a couple of hours (10-20hrs). This video is based on having played Starfield for 2 months, so well over 100 hours. I think a lot of reviewers, and players, share our declined enthusiasm (especially since Bethesda didn't give out review copies).
I do agree however that in the future, when it comes to big RPGs, we should hold off on uploading a review until we have played more...or perhaps not call our initial impressions 'a review' since this might be misleading. Thank you for the feedback! - Heather

@@AmalgamingleEven when played for 10-20 hours the issues are there and they are obvious. How can you ignore all the empty planets and annoying loading screens + the lack of interesting quests and the repetitive main quest?

    They should remove 980 planets

They don't have to remove 500 planets (after all, you don't have to visit them), just put a decent amount of content on a few of them

Bethesda's responses remind me of the responses from the producers and actors after the final episodes aired from season eight of Game of Thrones. A significant percentage of the fans felt disappointed, betrayed, and abandoned. The gist of the responses were, "You just don't get it.", "We stand by the choices we made.", and "If you don't like it, then go screw yourself." Yeah.. ..someone clearly earned a gold star during the "customer satisfaction" portion of the test during employee orientation. Unlike "Game of Thrones", this 'game' isn't supposed to end; provisionally.
Yes, all games have completable main stories, but the magic of previous Bethesda titles were game worlds that encouraged continuation. You could argue that Starfield does this more than any other previous title by giving players the ultimate "tabula rasa". Instead of a large land mass with only a couple of cities to build upon, we're given a thousand worlds with only a couple cities to work with. Previous games at least had enough meat on the bones to build a meal out of. Starfield.. ..is stripped to the bone. So, in a way, the developers are correct in their assessment that "the players should feel small, insignificant, and alone in a vacuum" in 'the grand scheme' of things, but that is an extremely poor way to tell your paying customers "You'll get nothing and like it!".
In the end, we don't like it, or their 'unapologetically plastic'* response.
    * Another poor comment from an equally uncaring company.

This game is currently about 30hours of play time and theres no replay value like other bethsda titles. Pretty boring world. Npcs are dumb. The UI is also one of the worst ive ever seen.

Maybe 3 to 4 guys worked 8 years on the interior and 1km×km planet design, only to put it into the drawer and to open that a year ago in order to make a soulless space-like game and sell it like the open world space dream it never was programmed or visioned as by the marketing area. Don't tell me they - as a whole team - worked 8 years on that, because THAT is an obvious joke! They didnt even, in any instance, work on the algorithm at least a single atomish bit to put out at least SOMETHING singular in this game. This game is a fine example of bad company culture if anything else. Cyberpunk had visions, Kingdom come had, No man's sky had, BG3 had, you could even see that, when some of these game had more or less big issues when released! But Starfield is just bland, mediocre, uninspired and without any love or innovation that made it to the higher management levels!!

What can you expect from a team that has no design documentation? Exactly what they delivered; a disjointed boring mess...

I love the game... i clearly play with a different style than this supposed 'target audience'.
I pay no attention to the current hate train - waiting for the next update happily.
