We owned a female red Chow Chow from 1984 to 1996.
One summer day, our two year old son managed to open the garden gate. Shardy followed after him as he toddled down the street. We came sprinting out of the house as we saw them turning the corner towards a busy road. Shardy was walking between our son and the road. Suddenly, the boy went to cross the road - as a van was coming down the hill. Shardy grabbed him by the back of his jeans and pulled him back onto the pathway, thus saving his life.
Chow Chows certainly do protect their family.

I've had one of these dogs, a black female, she was an absolute treasure to have and we adored her, we got her when the Sugar Puff bear was on the telly and everywhere we went children crowded around us to stroke her as they thought she was a bear. She loved every minute of the attention and was very gentle with everybody. When our children came along she was very protective towards them and when they went to bed she would lay at the bottom of the stairs till we went to bed. In the morning whoever got up first she would greet them and then dash upstairs to greet the children and then wait downstairs and wait for her porridge with the children. We had her about twelve years and we were all devastated when she died and still think and talk about her everyday. That was in 1982 and she's still in our hearts and will be as long as we live.

There's nothing like a Chow, nothing.
When they love you, it's overwhelming.
    I'm 74. I'm in my 8th year with my 5th Chow.
I hope he's around as long as my last 2 Chows.
They lived 15 & 16 years respectively. I hope I have enough life in me to raise 1 more before I cash it in.
My current Chow is very large. He is 6 inches taller at the withers then standard and weighs
120#. He is a rough coat shaded cinnamon. He's not fat, just big. We walk 5 miles everyday regardless of the weather. He loves being outside and he loves the water. It's hard to keep him out of it. I cook his dinner every night. He gets rice with 10 oz of cooked meat, 1 hard-boiled egg, vegetables and some cooked sweet potatoes topped with shredded cheddar cheese. It's balanced and it's healthy.

We had our black chow. Cole for almost 16yrs. She was the the best dog ever. She would follow me on my daily walks. She jumped between me and 2 snakes when I was 6. She was barely a yr old at the time. We grew up together.she would always sing. It was a sad day when she was in pain. And couldn't stand on her own anymore. I would go out every day to help her stand to go on her potty walk. One day she sang a sad sounding song. She was telling us she was ready. She all but gave her paw to our vet. When we had her put to sleep.

I had a chow chow 50 years ago as a 10 yr old. No one had ever seen one where I lived. We had total strangers constantly running across the road upto her to stroke her velvet furry head, ignoring my instructions to leave her alone as she didn't really like it. She was quite a timid natured dog who like her own space and wanted to play on her terms.😊She was the most beautiful dog I have ever seen. She liked to lay half in the cold hallway with the lounge door open and her head in the lounge to keep her eye on us whilst we huddled near the fire. Winters back then were quite bad but she came alive in the snow and cold temperatures. They do need regular grooming to keep that coat looking immaculate. Now that I'm retired I might get another one. Chow chows hold a special place in my heart.

I think it’s best to adopt a chow chow when they’re still a small puppy, because then they’ll grow up being used to socialising, petting, cuddling, etc. Unfortunately, most dogs that end up in shelters as adults come from extremely abusive and horrendous backgrounds, and that really affects the behaviour of chow chows. Of course, any dog can be rehabilitated, but if you want a chow who will get along with other dogs, kids, different humans, etc, the safest bet is to get a puppy and raise them affectionately.

We rescued a stray chow, he was still less than a year old and a rescued chow, she was 2-3 when we got her, same age as our stray. Our children lived to be 17 years old, we fed them raw for over half their lives and it really did eliminate trips to the vet beyond checkups and teeth cleanings until the last few years when old age had its impact. I have never felt love for someone else or from someone else as deeply as I felt it with my Chow children. Both our Chows were black, which essentially made them invisible at night when they were outside. My wife felt a degree of peace and safety that not even a gun could bring her when she was out with one or both of our babies. A few men tried to approach her when she would go on her walks with our precious pair. One man thought his dog connection would be a way to meet my wife. He talked about how dogs love him and how good he is with animals and she said "If you come any closer, there is a good chance you'll have to go to the hospital. If you don't want to be attacked by my two chows, please STOP where you are." We didn't raise them to be attack dogs, but their sense of guardianship is intense and constant. As long as my wife or I managed a meet and greet with new humans, after a few minutes they would ignore them, which meant they past the test. If for some reason they could never pass the test even if they followed our exact instructions - then that was a red flag for us because Chows don't lie.
I could talk forever about my love of Chow Chows and my 15+ years of wonderful memories of being a Chow Parent. Thank you for making a video about Chows, I've always loved your show. Any woman that lets wolves stick their tongues down her throat has a serious commitment to the Canine Family.

I got my chow, Freya from the shelter about a year ago. When we got her we were warned that she would be difficult to deal with. I had experience with Chow’s temperament before so when I met her I could tell she was a sweet dog, just shy of strangers. A year later, Freya is the most loving and loyal dog I’ve ever had. I think she has suffered from trauma from being abandoned and she is a bit nervous at times, and very protective of our house. However when we are out going for a walk she is always so friendly and lovable! She walks up to people to say hello and is always checking in on me. I grew up with two chows and I loved them both so so much.
Our female was black and MASSIVE, 75 lbs lean with a high protection drive. Even as a puppy, she would try to protect us from the larger dogs at the store while hiding behind our legs (we had to stop bringing her after awhile). She was 110% our guard dog through and through and despite her high, feminine bark, she was ALL teeth and I would have felt awful for anyone dumb enough to try to come into our home. She was high-strung and passed away fairly young just after her tenth birthday.
Our male however…… was tiny and an absolute puffball. Frosty was my dog. He followed me everywhere and was extreeeeemely good with people. I actually worked with a few people in my neighborhood who’d had previous bad experiences with the breed to help overcome their fear of them and to help teach them what they can really be like when trained properly. He was 45 lbs at his heaviest and a lovely cream that got darker in the winter. I could do literally anything to this dog from something as simple as plucking fluff to petting him with As long as we were touching in some way, he was happy and taking a nap. He tried to protect me from geese once and often kicked up with a deep bark if our female started up first. He lived to 14.5 and I was devastated when Mom made the call to put him down (I live two hours away). He was THE best and it’s because of him that I would like to rescue a how or two later down the line.

That black one was the spitting image of ours, my next door neighbour bought a male red one but he was never as friendly as ours, they can be a little wary of strangers but with family their very protective and loving.

I'm an American chow owner. I've had chows all my life. Many Americans perceive them to be aggressive but many have also never heard that reputation before. Whether or not a dog turns out to be aggressive is almost always entirely dependent on the owner's actions. If you socialize them, they will be like any other dogs. My current chow has been socialized since I got him at 11 weeks. However, he does not like being pet by strangers. He doesn't bite or get aggressive, he just ducks his head when they try to pet him. But he always does the play bow and wants to play with people. With me he is the biggest love bug and wants cuddles and kisses all the time.

We got a chow-chow puppy when I was 10. When one talks about a breed ambassador, Cindy was it. She was faithful and incredibly patient, allowing my friends and I to dress her up and the little toddler neighbor to pull her tail and face and climb on her. She growled twice in her entire life, both times when there was a "strange" man in our backyard (one was a utility worker doing maintenance on the phone pole, the other was the other neighbor's oldest son climbing the fence to get a lost frisby). She was affectionate with everyone but stand-offish with adult men save for my dad and one other: my high school sweet heart whom I ended up marrying in no small part because Cindy immediately took to him. I will love chow-chows for the whole of my life.

A friend had a chow years ago, sad to say, that dog was a complete psycho. Very territorial, very possessive, very aggressive. And for some weird reason, it despised anybody wearing the color brown. UPS people were rightfully scared of that dog, and so were the local deputy sheriffs (who wore the same color brown). It even hated black people. They did a terrible job socializing it and that was the result. If you're going to get a chow, make sure that you're ready to put the work in to train it properly and get it used to people, and understand its traits. They are not hands-off puppers. And don't even think about getting one from a puppy mill. I honestly think there are bad bloodlines in the breed that are more prone to being hair-trigger and psycho.

He is given sweet potato wrapped in duck for fiber .
Researching breeds before I bought him , he suited my lifestyle . He,s lazy ( lol ) very protective of me and a great watch dog .
He is aloof at times , like a cat . Extremely loving to me but takes him a few times to warm up to any other people .
He does not like to be cuddled but has to be near me . Very smart . I've babied him since 8 weeks old when I got him because of their natural aggressive behavior . I live in Canada and some insurance companies will not insure your property if you own a Chow because of their known aggressiveness . All of these things I knew about before I got him .

I've owned chow chows for many years & im in the states. None of mine were ever aggressive but very stand offish to people besides me. Not big cuddlers, yet always near me. Very smart & well behaved.
