    So this is the original monologue at the end.
    "I didn't have much family. A brother in Montana, some cousins, Marie's folks died back-to-back, the year after we were married. They were pretty old. She was a late child. We didn't have any kids. We had plans. She wanted three kids. Two boys, and a girl. She couldn't have any, though. So we didn't and I guess it's just as well. I number about 300 motels as my home. I sort of attach myself to people from time to time. Like with you. Especially around the holidays. I can take it in March, July, October. I don't mind it. But it gets hard about this time of year. I've never had much of a chance to be a family man but it gets really hard. And you know what it is? I don't get to give any of myself to anybody. It's not the getting I miss, it's the giving. I sat on that plane with you and I thought about you heading home to be with your people. And Tuesday night when you were in the shower and I looked at the picture of your kids, man, I thought you gotta be the luckiest man on Earth to go home and put those little guys on your knee and hug 'em and kiss 'em. I'm thirty-nine years old and I never had that ... and I never will. I'm sorry about all this. I just kinda lost control this time. Every year since Marie's been gone, I've gotten closer and closer to losing it. Usually I can head for a church. I can feel like I'm part of something when I'm in a church. This time... I guess I didn't get to the church fast enough. I just couldn't let go. I vowed I'd never burden anybody with this. And I broke my vow, held you away from your family. Caused you a hell of a lot of trouble. You better run."
    It completely changes how you view the movie. And this character. It was cut because the studio wanted a much less poignant and much funnier movie. There were a number of cuts like that to this film.

    • @mikeh720
      @mikeh720 Před 3 lety +9

      Ouch. Even the months nearly hit home - April, July, and Sept. I am grateful to have two kids though, my eldest is a bit of a ghost but her brother and I talk often. Once you (I) get over the tough...it's time for the next rough. Makes pulling out of the low pretty damn hard.

    • @marcanthonynolan
      @marcanthonynolan Před 3 lety +18

      The original cut of this movie was like three and a half hours long. By the time they cut everything down there was more cut footage than footage left in the film. There is a whole other Planes Trains and Automobiles out there we will never get to see.

    • @bigsistahtips
      @bigsistahtips Před 2 lety +3

      Actually, I figured most of those things out with the original ending without the literalness of words. It's evident that he would be triggered at that time of year and that he also attaches to people in an unhealthy way because of it. Also, the delay wasn't entirely his fault, so it's ok they left out the blaming himself thing. I think that monologue would've been too condescending to the audience.

    • @jwuk11345
      @jwuk11345 Před rokem +1

      The monologue was cut because the test audience laughed at it and also thought it made Del look bad. In the original cut Neal gets home and Del is in his home town train station waiting for him (and he then does the monologue) which made Del look manipulative/stalkery. The solution was to reverse the shot of the train leaving the station (look closely and you can see a man in the background walking backwards) and add some outtake footage of Neal thinking about things Del had said so it looks like Neal went back for him. It works better because then it's Neal bringing Del home with him rather than Del just turning up and latching on.
      I don't think the monologue is necessary. We know enough about Del without it.

    10 seconds in..... Nat says "Is he gonna miss his flight?" And so it begins.
    This video was so much fun to watch. Thank you Nat. Welcome to Wichita.
    Edit: Also the ending with his wife hugging him looks seemingly overplayed as you pointed out, but again it is due to the fact that in the original cut she thinks he is having an affair. That's why she is waiting upstairs in tears, thinking he's not coming back. So when he shows up with Del, she is so relieved. And she also knows Del's name, as Neal tells her in another deleted scene. A 3 hour cut of this movie would probably push everyone's anxiety to the limit, but I'd still love to see them release it someday.

While I genuinely like her reviews, she talks WAYYYY too much and she always talks right through some of the key emotional or funny moments in the movies she reviews. I really like commentary and I don't want someone to just silently sit through a movie and barely react, but she takes it way too far to the other extreme and just goes off on unrelated tangents and skips parts of the reaction people specifically look forward to. It's kind of getting annoying. Talk about the movie and what we're watching. Nobody cares about when movies used to have monologues.

    Good point about monologues. Modern audiences dont talk in their real lives, so everything is a clever quip or snappy retort in modern movies. I saw a movie from teh 50's once where a guy walks into a room full of people, walks to a coat rack, hangs his coat up and then proceeds to speak to the room. You can never have that much dead air in a movie anymore.

    • @Spottedfeather
      @Spottedfeather Před 3 lety

      Fine. It's not a christmas movie. For a movie to be a christmas movie, it has to be about christmas, not merely set at christmas. You could set Die Hard at literally any time of the year and it would be the same movie. The only thing that would be different is that the lines mentioning christmas would be changed to standard cheesy 80s action movie dialogue. That's it.
      John could be going to visit his family for a birthday. The party in the movie could easily be a new year's party..which would let you keep the christmas decorations.
      For a movie to be a christmas movie, christmas has to be part of the plot. If you take christmas out of Die Hard, the feel of the movie will be the same. If you take christmas out of a christmas movie, the entire vibe of the movie will change. The feel of Die Hard wouldn't change.

      @@Entertainzor I wouldn't fully agree that Die Hard is _the quintessential_ Christmas film, but it's definitely more so than The Shining. I get it, they're both set during Christmas, but even though neither Action nor Horror films are usually seen as typical Christmas films, at least Die Hard makes frequent references to the season all the way through.
      It has various Christmas songs and Christmas themed sounds in it's score , It takes place during a Christmas office party, Christmas decorations are abundant, Christmas presents are mentioned, Mclane dresses up Fritz (Karl's brother) as Santa in the lift (who can forget Hans Grubers _Ho...Ho...Ho_ when reading the note) and Theo gives his own interpretation of Twas the Night Before Christmas. There are many more smaller mentions. I can't think of many references to Christmas in The Shining, maybe you can.
