Saw this movie when I was a little kid and thought it was quite cute not understanding the ramifications of what Mr. 880 was doing. Saw it again when I was older and got a little choked up. I’m 74 now and it brings a tear to my eye.
Edmund Gwen (sic) is always a plus along with the stars and character actors. Script writer/s, costumier/es, set dresser/s, continuity person/s, director, producer/s, extras, bit parts for adults and children, electricians, carpenters, prop master/s, sound and camera persons, editor, lighting director/s, studio moguls who decided to add this O'Henry-esque candidate to the stable. Everybody is a winner, makers and viewers alike! Thank you for sharing this wonderful film with us. ❤🎉😊

Edmund Gwynn is in some delightful movies. One of my favorites with him in it is “Louisa”, with Ronald Reagan. ❤️
I last saw this movie when I was in the 8th grade 60 years ago. There was an organization that brought movies into the schools that provided it for the whole school to watch in the auditorium. I liked it then and I still do. Burt Lancaster played his part excellently and Emond Gwinn as the counterfeiter was the real star.
same here...the sisters of charity in old town albuquerque 1950's brought in reel movies like this for the school to watch in the old courthouse (school) auditorium.

What a precious wonderful film......one does not find this kind anywhere, anymore. It provides one with all kind of teachings......COMPASSION, caring, loyalty, kindness.....the world seems as if in the (movies past, at least) used to be a kinder, gentler place. If only in dreams. The actors did a great job! I have loved Edmund Gwen for a long time, beautiful Dorothy Mcguire and who could forget Burt Lancaster!!!!! Thaank you for the download.

This was a great movie, aside from the fact that the sound went out at a moment that was important to want to hear what was being said.

Gosh, it was only for about 50 seconds ... didn't really affect the story in any way ... now if it had been in the Court ... that would have been VERY annoying 🙄

What a wonderful film. Unfortunately the sound cut out for 2 minutes near the end but I re-watched that part and addlibed the script for that scene. You won't find such an emotional and respectful film like this today. It's a must watch for the entire family and hopefully everyone can learn something about kindness and compassion. Thank you for the upload, I feel blessed to have watched it. I would love to be like Mister 880.

We are nowhere near as much more important than just an inch of a decree. Sorry, I'm afraid it will take some time to get back to earth as it stimulates a bit of study on this topic. I’m still I’m amazed at how well the dogs 🐕 are trained in these movies. Although the old man doesn’t continue talking to him the dog 🐕 continues to watch him. 😅😅😅😌😌😊
A brutal and stylish noir about a ruthless counterfeiter played by master villain.....Ed Gwenn. Just kidding. But I will say that Burt Lancaster was at the peak of his charm. He was a man who could walk into the '21' Club in the same old sports coat he always wore and the same old tie knotted in the pocket and ready to wear. And every head - man and woman would turn to watch him pass he looked SO amazing with that acrobat's body and his eyes were icy blue like a malamute. Then Dorothy Maguire she is so WARM and TENDER always.
It was a sheer accident that I came across watching this movie as I had my doubt initially whether this movie would be quite entertaining going by it's unique tltle. But it turned out to be very charming and emotional if not for the most part of it but towards the end. Very nice and worth watching. Thank you for the uploading.

They opened a new movie theater in Westover Hills in south Richmond,Va. when i was a kid.This was the first one being showed.15 cents.

One of Burt's good ones. Watch him be compassionate and then see Young Savages and watch what he does there. He made a number of "bookends" films like this, about similar issues from different vantage points. Lawman and Gunfight at OK Corral: the old marshal wants the budding criminal to turn from his ways. Scalphunters and Nuremberg: you don't have to hate a group of people to commit hateful acts against them. From Here to Eternity and Run Silent: when command takes the bit between their teeth, people suffer. Rainmaker and Elmer Gantry: miracles can come true. Maybe The Train and Valdez or Cassandra Crossing: resistance is not futile. To see Burt at the very start, go to Internet Archive and watch Desert Fury, his first movie role, and then The Killers, which actually was released first.

@@Earnshawfully i don't know where you get your figures... 50s and 60s is probably only because people were still bearing the consequences of the war, the us still had a high neonatal mrtality rate, and especially heavy smoking... Currently, life expectancy is declining with diabetes 2 (not innate) starting in kindergarten....but what is more indicative of progress is not longevity but quality of life as long as possible... Many are disabled or very medically dependent starting at 60 today. In the 50s - 60s, for most older people, it was not the case. So in real terms, health has significantly declined, look around, it is plainly obvious.

Every movie that I've seen that old man in he has been exceptional. What an incredible actor as he steals your heart and almost every movie in some kind of way. Hats off to Mr Edmond is it? I had seen this movie quite a few years before so I know it was great but I could not remember all the details so I completely enjoyed it all over again. It's going on my hard drive..... Wow what a movie !!!

Why oh why does every old movie cut audio right at the important part???? This isn’t the first movie this has happened with!
For new viewers: The sound goes out for a bit at about the 1:10:00 mark but comes back on about two minutes later. BTW, this is a comedy, not a documentary, so the beginning should be taken in that light.

Burt Lancaster started in a circus, on the ropes he was more comfortable than on ground, he never used stunt double in his movies, let's see Arnold Schwarzenegger do that, lol

A sweet tale of good and evil and how it can be extremely difficult to define sometimes. All three main characters, Edmund Gwenn, Dorothy McGuire, and Burt Lancaster, were fully realized and beautifully acted. There is a short audio loss during a dramatic moment, but be patient - the sound soon returns.
So you know, the actor playing Mr. 880 is Edmund Gwenn, not Green, and I agree with what you said in your post.

The audio cut out, so I don’t know what happened to the dog, but I’ll bet that Dorothy Maguire’s character fostered the dog while the old man was to be in prison -which was only going to be about 4 months.
What would happen to HIM, with no family to take him in?! Many Elderly citizens suffered and died, before Social Security was created!
Actually they were mostly taken care of by the children they'd had. Which is what family are really supposed to do. But now days.....@@nanwilder2853

From 1:12:20 to 1:14:04 the sound is turned off. I saw this lovely picture years ago, but forgot everything except a slight remembrance. Therefore, I was enjoying immensely being reacquainted with this picture until the sound was muted. What an evil twisted mind does such a thing?
It's prob not a glitch. Likely altered on purpose to avoid copywrite strike on the channel.
