My sister in law passed away unexpectedly in February. She was months away from retirement. I had no idea she was collecting paper, ephemera, stamps, inks, old books, documents to start into junk journaling and book making. I discovered many treasure troves of just those things. So in her honor I am making a journal in which I memorialize her life. She has always been a terrific artist in any medium. I hope I can suitably honor her. She was such a true friend and a better sister than my own. It has been difficult because we have to go through all her stuff and decide if the objects go to family, garbage or Good Will. We are on a deadline so it all has to be sorted and assigned to one of the categories. That’s how I found her treasures.

Andrea, I had such a sister-in-law--a most beautiful woman that recognized value in things and collected on many fronts... she had a great eye and, best of all, she was tireless in following through on her creative ideas. She died a hard death from a relentless disease but kept her joi de vivre to the very end. I was reminded again, reading your post, to honor her again. Rock on.

My neighbor’s were in their 90’s and after they passed away their daughter came to get the house ready for sale. She told me to take whatever I wanted when she left and that the house would not go on the market for a while. I had a couple months to go through the garage. It was amazing! I took two boxes of magazines from the 1940’s and 50’s that have been endlessly entertaining and so fun to junk journal and decopauge with. I took old stamps, postcards, antique books, and an amazing collection of vintage Christmas cards from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. There were old letters, ration cards from the war, photographs and vintage children’s books. It has been ephemera heaven! Unfortunately I am a very busy teacher and do not have time to put it all to good use. I got it all organized and now I can’t wait to retire and play!

I just moved a pile of my completed journals from my craft room into my bedroom closet ( bad move) because I was being crowded out by them. I have already done the craft show circuit and a youtube channel ( on another topic) and am over selling my stuff. I also found that my creativity changes when I know I will be selling the item. I really just enjoy making journals. I have already gifted all my family and friends with journals :) I minimalized everything in my house...except my craft room. I clean it out all the time but I turn around and then its just plain full again. ( darn thrift stores, antique shops and garage sales with their amazing deals) I cleaned it out yesterday and it still feels cramped. Sometimes I watch a hoarder video and that motivates me to get rid of even more stuff :) I know I will never look at them in my bedroom closet so I will move them into the living room coffee table, its an old trunk. I can occasionally look at them here and show folks when they come by to visit . Eventually they will find homes :) I gifted one to a silent auction to raise money for struggling girls and also gave one to a grieving neighbor. I feel the journals find their special owners. Oh, and I am putting myself on a shopping freeze to force me to use up what I have. What a relief! It's true...less is more. And remember, its only paper :)

Last weekend at a yard sale I found a 4” stack of love letters written in 1948 for $2.00!!! Written in fountain pen and held together by an old piece of lace. I was sooo excited and the seller told me her daughter said “Who would be interested in such a thing?” ME, that’s who! The daughter obviously never heard of junk journals. The seller knew someone would be interested. Also good stamps & postmarks on them. They were written by a man to his fiancée in the months leading up to their wedding. So sweet except when he had to get real with her about her wedding demands. Who knew bridezillas existed in 1948?

Lovely, lovely, lovely! So lovely in fact I feel the urge to make my very first CZcams comment! Thanks for all the tips! I´m in the middle of nowhere and have to turn to the internet a lot of times to get to stuff. Not that I mind the internet, but I do want to support the local shops as much as possible and keep an eagle eye on their stock. Most of them are also only too happy to special order stuff I want but then it´s usually in quite huge packs. And I am trying to keep my own stock down so I dont have to move to a bigger house just because of it. Only doing it for me, no gifting, no selling so I really can never use up a ton of stuff. Books from the fleamarkets - you can find incredible stuff in there. What I really came here to say is that Ive started to collect cardstock from the packets that the other stuff comes from to use as backing to the tags and whatnot Im making. Also the brown craftpaper people use as inside wrapping is fabuluous when you need something sturdier. And the plastic they put stamps, paper or ephemera in for shipping makes great storage for projects or can even be used as substitute glas in photoframes and such. I figure its safe to use with no acid and no sticking since they essentially keep their original use. Thank you, Nic! (Now I just need to figure out how to post this thing...)

I totally understand. I suggest starting with used magazines or newspapers. Then later, go to a thrift store & look for an old paperback book. For hard bound books, old college books that are outdated are a good source. None of these things have much value. Leave all your good books on the bookshelf.

I absolutely cannot bring myself to tear apart and mutilate history. History is literally being rewritten as we speak, and so many of the books in this video are disappearing... never to return, and will be covered up by tacky collaging for the sake of junk journaling, with things that, in this case, I do not consider junk. Sorry, not sorry.

Have collected all this stuff (for collage) before I learned about junk journals--woo hoo! A few more suggestions: Calendars with beautiful images at 99 cent/Dollar stores. Garage sales--even cheaper than thrift stores. Even small towns have libraries & most have a Friends of the Library section where the books are CHEAP. People donate books & magazines & library resells them to buy more new books. Our small library gives the magazines away. (Just make sure you are not deconstructing a valuable first addition). Our library has "bag sales" for all the books you can cram in a bag for $3-5. Our used book store gives away books they don't want! Oh, most church rummage sales have great bargains.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I go to thrift shops or Goodwill and find clothes with beautiful fabrics and cut them up to use in journals or crafts. I found some beautiful sari tops at Goodwill one time. They have the most gorgeous trim and they are silk. There is such a problem with clothing being dumped in landfills and it takes up to 200 years for them to decompose, that cutting them up and using them for crafts is like recycling. Even clothes people donate end up going overseas and often end up in landfills anyway. So don't feel bad about cutting them up and using them in your crafts.

"I say tea stain it!" You are awesome Nik! I teach an environmental science course and am trying to figure out a way to get my students to make some kind of mini booklet or something like it from sources you mentioned. I think this will help them rethink resources and what is waste. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Hey Nik, I'm playing some of your videos while working on my projects and found this oldie but goodie. Fun! Years ago I used to get old "wallpaper books" that the paint stores throw out. I still get a lot of mileage out of them for various projects. When traveling I sometimes pick up a couple of the free brochures at the rest stops and ask for a paper menus at restaurants.

Great video. I have a great tip for the paper bags. Want them to look like old leather? Wet them and scrunch them up (first tear them in to pieces) then tea stain or walnut stain them, let them dry then mod podge the papers down on what you want to use as the cover substrate. You can also ink them up or what ever you want. It's a really cool technique.

Thank you for sharing your ideas and tips, Nik. I remember your Deserted Island journal well, because it was what brought me out of my shell ;-) Anyway, as for other cheap junk journal ideas - in my late father's archive I have found lots of interesting stamp collecting bits and pieces (glassine bags, tiny "tucks" for stamps, sheets to display stamps in). Oh, and wallpaper!!

All really good info Nik, appreciate you sharing it. Love your atlas … it’s awesome !!! Great find for you. I think a blind auction could work for selling all your beautiful items. Good will stores are where

Thanks for the info Nik, especially about the copyright. That particular issue about using pages from books seems to be cropping up a lot. It's put my mind at ease lol.
You're not a monster or heartless for getting rid of stuff you have no room for. You are giving people the chance to purchase gorgeous items 😊. I think Ebay is a good option. 😊

Hi Nik! Absolutely loved your video, it was very funny and informative!! 😂😂 thanks for the info on copyright, very interesting! I think the blind auction would be fun! I often pop in to my local DIY store to pick up wallpaper samples...I’ve also heard of people getting hold of those big sample books that you used to see in the 70’s, but I’ve never been lucky enough to find one! Looking forward to your next video! 💕💕

Thanks for all the great info! I have held back with a few book items because I was worried about the copyright issue. This helped a lot. I go to estate sales when possible and they almost pay you to take the books, magazines and old paper because these items are usually the ones that don't sell. I have gotten great old embellished clothing, lace, doilies, curtains, etc. this way also. I would vote for ebay because good healthy competition is always fun.
