To add to the Ginyu's being a small influence on Gohan, remember Goku also tried the pose out with Ginyu during their spat. Granted Goku didn't understand it, but the apple didn't fall to far from the tree on goofy stuff like this. Also, gonna keep it 100, but Great Saiyaman is a stroke of genius and is a shame that he wasn't fully accepted for the comedic gold it was during it's run.

Plus she's actual not some shallow ditz and is actually nice and a sweetheart! Erasa is great and tbh I wish she became incorporated more into the cast down the line instead of being basically never seen again after the next World Tournament.
It says a lot when "domestic Videl" basically ends up just taking on a lot of Erasa's personality, when I wish it could have been a sort of Bulma vs Chi Chi relationship to Gohan and Videl actually keeping some of her spitfire attitude.

This Saiyaman stuff was my first introduction to Dragon Ball so I was so lost when I first found out that Krillin used to be bald and Gohan used to be a toddler 😵

Unironically, the great sayiaman arc is my favourite arc of the Buu saga. Dragon Ball is at it's best when it is not trying too hard - the early classic dragon ball vibes temporarily resurfaced and the classic dragon ball was truly incredible, and even through the unseriousness and attempted comedy, there is a hidden gem, as there is the exploration of the difficulty of living an ordinary life as a domesticated sayian. The Gohan and Videl character dynamics and the character development shared between the two was incredible. Videl is a great character before super, personally I think she was most well written character in the franchise despite her shorter time existing. But much like her future husband, she too is the epitome of wasted potential.
Also, who didn't try to learn how to fly under Gohan's instructions to Videl when they were a kid? I certainly was left wondering why I wasn't floating in the air as fast as Goten or Videl 😔.
I like Gohan going to school but the acting like a superhero shook me. I appreciate it for character development but even I got gassed up when they teased Gohan going super saying 2 again. I kept thinking...no one is safe now. Also buddy said he's 16 but was 11 at the end of the cell games then 7 years explicitly has passed... so maybe kids go to school way later in life lol
That world as a whole has transformed drastically and dramatically from DB to Z

You see, Piccolo saying “he’s just a scared 11 year old boy,” is a dubbing error.
Furthermore, the 7 year timeskip wasn’t exactly a 7 year timeskip, it was rounded up to 7 years, in actuality it was 6 years and a few months, so Gohan’s 17th birthday was yet to come and occurred shortly after the defeat of kid Buu.
Additionally, Goku and Gohan did not spend a full year in the hyperbolic time chamber during the Cell saga. They left early and in total spent 10 and a half months instead.
Also it’s worth noting that the manga literally states in a text box that Gohan was 16 years old.
So during the Cell games, Gohan was 9 chronologically and 9-10 biologically.
This should clear any confusion, any information stated is gathered from the relevant, appropriate sources such as official dragon Ball timelines made by Toriyama, canonical guidebooks and the Daizenshuu. I would send a link for source citation but CZcams disallows it.
@nivnavion thank you that was more than I expected. I do remember them leaving the chamber early and I've no issues with the age thing. It just puts a lot more into perspective. Now that energy drain thing seems so much worse and the romance for Gohan and Videl seems more potent now.
Early Dragonball had a goal and a journey.
It's not like the Saiyaman stuff.
It's closer to the Dr.Slump stuff in that sense. But not as wild.
@@DSan-kl2yc Due to the timeskip after Cell saga, and the fact that it was the beginning of the Buu saga, there was no goal, it was a stabilisation period, it had the ability to take liberties. If it was mid-arc then it would be a problem, but it was not.
And it’s about the comedic moments through dialogue exchanges and awkward events. Dr Slump is a gag manga and does not bare much resemblance to the sayiaman arc by comparison, though it has been a year or two since I last read it so I may be missing some key references.
I legit forgot it was 7 days since the last upload... It felt like an eternity, but we're about to get some the best kind of "filler" arc with Gohan being the Stupendous Saiya-Man with his incredible power to get clowned on by absolutely everyone.

Ah, the early Buu Saga it's interesting to come back and look into it. What blows me is away is that Toriyama planned to do this slice of life nonsense for the ENTIRE arc until the fans and editors rightfully told him "look, Gohan was literally splattering the brain matter of Cell jrs about 5 chapters ago, you can't just do a 180 and make dragon ball all comedy again after we've had world ending stakes" I hold a new appreciation for this stuff since it's such a unique and fun era of DB.

@@mijaroprime9509 Narrativization. Toriyama has said as the arc was developing he felt Gohan's character was ill-suited for the primary role in the story. It is possible there were both interior and exterior influences but the way he talks about it is more of a bummer realization about a character he liked and had high hopes for just not settling into the story as he envisioned at the beginning.

I actually really liked the Gohan slice of life episodes and personally wished it had gone just a tad longer. Gohan was a very different Protagonist and I liked that.
The ONE and Only thing i liked about dragon ball evolution was that gohans friend sharpner was recast as gokus school bully. Found that shit harlarious.

I love this rendition, you’re really good. Unlike many of the fans I genuinely loved this arc and how it started off. It was a breath of fresh air and I love the alterations to each character to some degree. Especially Dylan I love how he wanted to be a superhero. Heck I was a teenager at this time roughly the same age I believe, Thomas character spoke a lot to me. And mirrored some of the same things that I wanted to do at that time. Phenomenal video nine out of nine.

Another layer to the Vegeta comment is knowing Gohan is the only one who stands a chance if there's another major threat. Vegeta has presumably spent the last five years training but still can't go ssj2 at this point, and has something to protect now.

It really feels like that Z was supposed to be Gohan's story. He's there day one and get lots of time to cook in the show. Saiyan saga he was right there all along, even though Goku took center stage at the end. Same with Namek, being at the center of the action until Goku vs Freeza. Android and Cell saga was a mixed bag but obviously he was the number one since he took out Cell. And with the focus on Gohan up until Buu hatches and then Mystic Gohan, it really feels like Gohan was supposed to be the main protagonist in Z, but people wanted Goku.
Just something that feels like was supposed to be and only made it half way to its mark.
Gohan goes from "there goes my hero" to "why this man didn't do a single rep at the gym while we wasn't looking"
I wish we got more of Gohan getting used to high school before the tournament arc because it felt like the sort of low-key, chill storytelling we got in early Dragon Ball. I hadn't thought of Gohan getting inspired by the Ginyu Force's theatrics, but it makes sense!

Tbh I think Goten is a lot more chill than his pops was at his age. Young Goku was a bit of an animal lmao, bros moral compass and ability to go from 0 to 100 was alot different than it is now. I feel like Goten with all his family influences is alot more bashful, merciful and humble than what we were getting from OG Goku. Although the curiosity and OD strength are definitely still there

I think Gohan was written this way now to teach us all a lesson. A lesson of stagnation and getting too comfortable in life. Gohan learned the hard way when he got washed, rinsed, and folded by fat Buu. If Gohan had trained properly in those 7 years, he’ll 5 out of 7 years, he would’ve easily defeated Fat Buu, dabura, and Babidi. He would’ve definitely achieved super saiyan 3.

I honestly never really thought about why Vegeta trains little Trunks so much. I always thought it was because he was jealous of Goku's kid. The more I think about it though, and look back on the cell sage, he knows stronger and stronger enemies will come, just like for Future Trunks. He wants to make sure his Trunks will be ready for anything (I think).

My favorite saga. Fucking love it. It's like Toriyama just flipped the table over and said let's make this as crazy as I can. From the moment Buu hatches, all hell breaks lose. From him literally eating a demon king that Gohan was squaring up against, one shotting Gohan, cross chopping the Supreme Kai, river dancing on Vegeta, and turning people into candy for a snack.... Toriyama was cooking up cooking up cooking up some devious SAUCE in this arc.

Toriyama did so much to characterize Vegeta that simply flew over my head as a kid. but rewatching DBZ in my 30s gave me a greater appreciation of the character especially in the Buu saga and GT where Vegeta sacrifices himself for his loved ones and (in the case of GT) accepts help from other to reach a new level of potential. Toriyama was in his elite bag.
