Have you ever noticed that when Darth Vader became Darth Vader, his first words through his mask were not about which rebels to kill first, not about plans to take over the galaxy, and not expressing his desire to kill Obi-Wan. The first thing he said was simply “where is Padme?” Even after turning himself over to the dark side he still had all this love in him directed towards Padme. When he found out that Padme was gone, he lost all love and lost all hope. After he lost his love, he had no feelings and no direction. Nothing else mattered to him besides taking over the galaxy and ruling the Empire. Darth Vader became heartless. That is until, he saw Luke almost die. The same strong love he had for Padme was now directed at Luke, and he did not want to lose another person he loved so dearly. Vader had so much love in him for Luke he was willing to die just to see him with his own eyes. He wanted to look at Luke just like he used to Look at Padme.
Accurate except you missed out on the important self-hate in the form of feeling guilty over Padme's death. It is very important to note that Palpatine chooses his words carefully, in saying "you killed her." The self-hate and guilt was the last piece of the Darth Vader ingredient to ensure that he loses all hope....
NOOOOOOOO!!!!
I love
Also, he was already dying when he said remove the mask. So he kinda wasn't risking death. He was already dying.

The look on Anakin's face when the mask is being put on him. You see terror like it's that moment right there that reality of the situation is setting in that there's no turning back. Great scene
To me, the shot his face almost looks like he’s being sealed into a coffin.
Anakin Skywalker is dead. And Darth Vader is born.
@@yamato6114 Well, one other interesting thing to note is that if you listen hard enough, as the mask is being lowered, the respirator that Anakin is on, along with various other instruments start shutting off, even the heart monitor, so you no longer hear him breathing, or the beating of his heart. Then, moments after the mask seals itself, you hear Vader's iconic breathing sound. Another symbolic way of saying that Anakin is dead, and that Vader has truly come to life!
The way he walks at 3:35 is a great detail. It's the first time using his cybernetic legs, so a course he is going to be walking weird when he is using them for the first time. It shows that he has to adapt to his new life as a cyborg.
@@searain1573 True, and btw his legs are also really heavy and magnetic i think, so they are constantly being pulled downwards when he tries to walk.
He says “Padme help me” when the clamps down and his heart also stops beating, throughout the whole scene you can hear his heartbeat in the background until the mask closes
imagine how scary it is to have a creepy deformed man staring at you while you're helpless and on fire

3:42, that smile by Palpatine is just the pure look of evil. He has successfully turned the boy he “cared” about to the dark side. Before this, Palpatine had to act like the father Anakin never had, and he did that, giving him advice to be successful and just being respectful. But when he smiles like that, he knows how powerful Vader is, and he is going to use his power to his own advantage. Palpatine is the most evil villain ever. No way around that.

1:43 The last time we ever hear Anakin's ACTUAL voice. Anakin's "voice" in the suit is just a modulator. Not to mention, after rewatching this scene, you actually see how BRUTAL this scene really is. You're looking at a skinless man getting turned into a robot.
Worst part is, to prevent the midichlorians in his body dying chemically he had to be “repaired” without anaesthetics. This meant he could feel everything in the operation; bones smashed, cuts in his burns and the saws cutting off more of his body.

He tried to keep control of vader best he could because he knew he was the only one who could destroy him, Palps was definitely scared of him.
@@anguishsad-lad2521 Palpatine intentionally made the suit electricity-sensitive, so that he was able to immediately kill him in case he tried to overthrow him. Not only that, but he also handi-capped the entire suit.
Idk what y'all are talking about. In the comic adaptation of this scene, Vader lashed out at Palpatine and Palps easily overpowered his rage and then smiled in his face. Even before using lighting. This is Vader at his weakest. He was no real threat to Palps. Palpatine most likely backed up as a way to keep Vader under the illusion that Palps actually fears/respects him as peer or "friend" as he's been known to call Vader. It's not genuine. This is one of the most powerful scenes in movie history
Agreed
Let’s cover something real here.. in a vacuum of cold violent darkness, you never completely show your hand to perceived allies.. leaving the infinite wonder of the true extent of one’s capabilities
The scene where he is lifted up and is told about what happened to Padme, is so heavy. You can feel the pure pain and sadness in him. Everything he had done, everyone he killed, everything he destroyed, everything he just became was in that moment, entirely in vain. All he had left for the rest of his life was self loathing and pain. One of the only reasons Vader never strived to become a better Sith and overthrow his master, is because serving Sidious was one of the few things he had left in his life that gave him any sense of purpose. After he dawned the suit, he was barely human, never mind his cybernetic modifications. He was the physical embodiment of pain and suffering. And he had no one to blame but himself.
To say that anakin himself is the only one to blame is pretty harsh. His master pretty much failed him and the jedi councils are pretty much a bunch of heartless sociopath with zero compassion. He has nobody when he was at his lowest so inturn he goes to a man who he thinks cared for his problem but turns out to be a very evil man. Imo the whole theme of starwars was really never about the so called jedi vs the sith but rather a story about love and compassion. Sure those things can turn you to the dark side if not managed properly but getting rid of them completely is already an act of the sith themself. This is why the jedi order fails. They think by completely remove any feelings on them and those around them would make them incorruptable but in reality that way of thinking is also an act of evil. This is why the jedis and obi wan did not understand anakin because even tho obi wan "loved" Anakin, he did not and cannot understand that anakin is a very compassionate person. He would even go as far as caring for his clone troopers, which other jedis used them like cannon fodders. And the result is absolute emotional clusterfuck that is darth vader
@@JCDentonman From what George Lucas has said on that matter, this is correct. The Force wasn't out of balance simply because of the Sith. It was also out of balance because the Jedi, in spite of their more noble ideologies, had cut themselves off from their emotions out of fear of falling to the Dark Side and becoming Sith, themselves. Which is pretty ironic, seeing as they deem fear to be the starting point to one's fall to the Dark Side! And fall, they did, in the end......There were *very* few Jedi who didn't follow this code of conduct, so to speak, Qui-Gon Jinn being one of them, which is why he was somewhat at odds with the council. And that's really where the prophecy comes into play, with Anakin being The Chosen One, and bringing balance to the Force. Both sides, in their own way: The Sith wanting to control and dominate the Force, the Jedi for the reasons listed above, and more, were out of balance, so both orders had to be destroyed in order to balance things out.....And that, includes Vader, himself.....He was a student of both failed orders, and subject to their faults and fumbles, so it's not mere chance that he died. He, too *had* to die to bring balance to the Force, and allow a new, more balanced order, not built singularly on either of the order's ideologies, but out of a more balanced, neutral one to be created under Luke. Which is why I actually prefer the post-Return of the Jedi EU to the Disney canon, because that's what happened.......There is a list of things I find wrong with their films, and what they did to Luke will always be at the top of my list!
I believe that's why people love Darth vader so much. Ask anyone and everyone will say Darth Vader is the best Villian of all time. He's strong, he's ruthless, he's evil, we fear him, and we respect him but we all have empathy for him.
Despite it all Darth vader is quite reliable In doing whatever to protect those we love. He went through a life Long struggle he didn't have a dad. Left his mom and the only home he knew to fulfill his destiny. Hoping to see his mom again only to have her die in his arms ten years later.
He fell in love even thought he wasn't supposed. Got married and was overjoyed to become a father with the love of his life only to have his joy ruined with visions of his wife dying. Thus beginning his journey into Darth vader and all of it ended up being for nothing until he found hope in his son.
Darth vader is evil as he is relatable.
Darth Vader is heartbreakingly ICONIC
K but I don’t understand why he didn’t kill him for lying, didn’t he serve him all because he claimed he could resurrect her
@@anpdgbe In most of the side-material, canon or expanded universe, the reasons given for him continuing to serve him are further explained. He stayed with him merely because he was the only one left from his old life, and Padme's death, and the actions he took that ultimately led to and brought it about made him feel he.....deserved what he got....Her death broke him emotionally speaking, and he felt responsible. That pain also blinded and angered him greatly, and compelled him to do nothing but inflict an endless torrent of pain on everyone else around him.....What better position or place to do it from than at Sidious' side?
This scene is actually devastating. When the helmet descends onto his face… he whispers “Padme, help me”.

3:40 Palpatine starts smiling at Vader in aguish.

The starting image always hit me the hardest. The broken hero who burned it all down having literally made a deal with the devil. Now a maimed and burnt crisp himself. And the devil descends into that same pit of Hell himself to collect on his investment.
Makes it worthwhile by the end though. He used Anakin's intense love for Padme to bind him to the darkness. But that same intense love for Luke ultimately broke his chains.
What gets me every time about this scene is that Palpatine did absolutely nothing to numb Anakin's pain during this procedure. No anesthesia, no sedatives, nothing. He wanted Anakin to feel every droid scraping the charred clothing off his body. Every cut as his chest was opened and stitched shut. Every inch of what remained of his limbs having metal welded directly on them. This was torture for failing Palpatine. And Palpatine enjoyed every second of it.
Palpatine truly is one of the sickest villains ever.

The only comfort vader ever really got was in his water chamber which had vitamins and medicine to revitalize him. And its said in that chamber vader was free to be himself or what was left of him.
@@gabymartinez6932 Okay, thanks
@@gabymartinez6932 The "water chamber" is called a Bacta tank for future reference.
Here's a theory: Palpatine killed Padme. If you listen closely enough, you can hear Anakin's heart stop as his helmet is being sealed for a split second. I think that Palpatine leeched Padme's life force to both keep Anakin alive and remove his most dearest attachment, thus fully paving the way for Darth Vader to take hold.
Maybe it's just symbolic
I believe so to also Padme has very high midichlorians
@@user-id8zc1xk5r she did but just enough for someone to to notice her, not for her to actually use the force.
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (AKA: broken heart syndrome) killed Padme. I think Sidious put the images of Padme's death in Anakin's dreams which caused him to fall. So, in a way, yes, Sidious killed Padme.
Thats what i think too, aint no way anakin killed her by force choking her unconscious, and he dreamed she would die but he never saw how or who did it
Just standing near that lava river would literally melt their faces away
I love how you can see the smoke in front of the mask move when Vader takes his first breath. Small details that make the movie amazing
This scene was so sad, yet so epic.
2:25 the iconic breathing...i remember as a kid wearing a mask, i used to do that sound
I will never forget watching this on the big screen and hearing the crowd go apeshit when Vader arose on the operating table. It was absolutely breathtaking and the fact they got JAMES EARL JONES to do the voice again made this scene that much greater. At that moment, the masked Darth Vader was born!
I recently watched all in chronological order, and this was my favourite. the chills you get when that mask goes on and he breaths for the first time.
This scene is even sadder when you realize Anakin would follow the very man who may have killed his wife. Gggrrrr
May have?
2:10 “Padme help!“
Patrick Star no it's
Padame help me
I hear it 😢
I cried so much during this scene.Anakin was supposed to be the chosen one.An innocent kid before and turns into Darth vader. Its honestly so sad
Imagine Anakin not getting burn and still become a sith lord he would be so powerful
And Padme would have been alive since the Emperor wouldn't have saved Anakin's life with her's.
Anakin when he got the role of Darth Vader: it costed me an arm and a leg to be here
Hearing that first breath gives me the chills everytime 👏🏼👏🏼
I remember watching 4:04 in the cinemas getting the biggest chills ever
The chains on Vader as he destroyed the lab. From beginning to end, Anakin was a slave to power
with the recent Force Ability in Rise of Skywalker, with transferring Force essence to heal a wound while also taking the same wound, the theory that Palpatine used Padme's to keep Anakin alive during the procedure gains a lot more ground
That first breath as darth Vader will always be the best scene especially when the music starts up …really the birth of it right there 😱😱
2:30 Listen carefully and closely to the song. It says: *I'm a Sith Lord.* *Why couldn't I save her?*
Specimen 6
Damm it does sound like that
Holy shit 😮

Did anyone notice Palpatine used a light side power to save Anakin? If you don’t remember, Obi-Wan used the same power to heal Luke in A New Hope.
Nah, pretty sure he was draining Padme's life. Notice how she does right after he takes his first breath? That's my headcanon at least.
Boy, this scene was 'breath'-taking..................
Nahhh I'd say it was 'hot'
The craziest part is that the clones who recovered Anakin were also the same clones in the first episode of Star Wars the clone wars animated series
I remember how quiet it was in the theater in 2005...like people could not believe it
It makes this scene even sadder when you hear Anakin's desperate call for Padme's help at 2:09
Listen closely, he says "Padme help" before the mask gets put on
I have watched this scene many many times and I was today years old when I first heard this.
I'm a 90's kid, with english as my 3rd language.
Just wanna share the most wtf moment I had in SW world.
I grew up with the prequels, only heard a little about the original trilogy, never knew the whole story, just knew that there is a great villain Darth Vader, that says "i am your father" and his iconic music.
We didn't have movie theaters in the town I lived in, so I wasn't that much into movies, but really loved the Star Wars 1-2.
And then Episode 3 finally came out in DVD, I was really excited to see it.
As the movie went on, my favourite character Anakin suddenly turns to the darkside, gets almost killed and BECOMES THE GODDAMN DARTH VADER HIMSELF.
My jaw literally dropped when that Vader mask came down to Anakin.
and I had to have a moment after the movie ended, just trying to process what i just saw. 😂 Awesome experience.
Just had to put it out there, I still wonder if i'm the only one 😅
Must've been insane. I watched the originals first so I already knew. In fact, I'm not sure how, but even before I watched any Star Wars movies at all, I already knew that Anakin was Vader.
It seems that pretty much every time viewers watch the movies chronologically they are gobsmacked that Anakin becomes Vader. It seems the movies work well when shown in episode order.
Revenge of the Sith and The Empire Strikes Back are both so fucking good
Best episodes by far
"Fear is the path of the dark side.
Fear leads to anger.
Anger leads to hate.
Hate leads to suffer."
right as the mask goes on, he whispers ‘padme, help me’
A lot of my people may disagree but anakin died after palpatine told Vader “it seems in your anger you killed her” and you can see his rage and sadness
At 2:11 anakin whisper "Padme help me". It very hard to hear and the fact that i just found out about this is mind blowing
man i remember when my grandma introduced me to star wars and we binged all the movies together. good times ☺️
1:43 in young anakin voice
ThAT TicKleS !!!!!!!!!
Underrated.
Anakin's descent to become Darth Vader is a sad scene. A former Jedi Knight who had fell to the Dark Side and participated in their eradication all for love, a man who possessed the highest Force potential in the galaxy - greater even than Palpatine's - reduced to a fraction of his full strength in the cybernetic suit, and even forced to adapt his fighting style to accommodate his heavy and cumbersome prosthetics. And as advanced as his suit appears to be, it was performed without anaesthetic and even had in-built design flaws that the mechanical genius of Anakin could easily resolve, yet it requires him turning off the very life-support systems keeping him alive. This must have been intensely frustrating for Anakin. But the greatest shame is that everything that he did and what became of him was to ensure that Padme lived, to avert his darkest fears, and she still ended up dying. He gambled the highest price: his soul, for Padme. And lost. I'm sure on some level, Anakin knew he was played by Palpatine, but he believed that he had nothing left. Nothing to go back to, and resigned himself to his fate, living only to conquer the galaxy.
On becoming Vader, in almost every respect, he was a shell of his former self - physically, spiritually, morally and emotionally. A tragedy in every sense of the word.
Resurrected Maul: "What could you possibly hate enough to defeat me?"
Darth Vader: "Myself"
