  • Aston Martin V8 engine ticking noise | QOTW #141
The Aston Martin V8 Vantage 4.3L and 4.7L engines can sometimes exhibit engine noise which comes from an out of specification valve tappet shim.
Finding engine noises can be difficult, so in this video we feature clips of engine rattle, tappet shim ticking, from an engine just outside of the specification, and another example considerably outside of the specification.
The tappet shim noise from the engine is very distinctive and this video should help you identify if the noise your engine is making sounds similar to the example we show, and help enable you to define what is wrong with your engine and how to fix your Aston Martin engine

This channel is an absolute Jewel! I am seriously thinking of buying an Aston Martin V8 Vantage 4,3/4,7....Maybe part exhanging my X308 XJR/ Maserati Quattroporte IV ....
These Astons are still ( amazingly!?) pretty "affordable"..( in mainland Europe at least)...and could be in my budget range if I am carefull......but I need to do my homework and You have helped Me great deal on that! Cheers!

Just bear in mind the replacement costs, a window module will cost best part of £500.00, quite common to break and I believe on the 4.7 you have to replace both then get them reprogrammed at AM.. I had my 4.7 for 4 months, AM had it for 3.!!!! Check subframe because they rust.! Mine was 60% rusted on a 14 plate.! Bloody disgusting in my opinion.!.. anyway AM gave me my money back and I would never buy another unless it was the newer version with the merc AMG engine.😊

@@nigelsmith1198 Thanks for the Info! I am pretty handy and have full workshop facilities in hand....Been playing with Italians for the past 15-20 years and Jags too and almost anything can be fixed BUT one must always bare in mind the cost of parts that You just can not fix! And of course some maintenance items can be very pricy....

I've had 2 Vantages (1 coupe with 6 spd manual, and a convertible with paddle shifters, both 4.3L), and still have my convertible. These are very reliable cars and typically don't have issues. Any issues I've had so far I've been able to resolve myself at minimal cost. Check out videos by Redpants and also Aston1936 on CZcams - they have many DIY videos. These are great cars, and I believe are still bargains!

@@2kostasd Of course the Aston range is truly fantastic, if they were not, I’d not have worked for them in design, not dedicated my working life to them in my own business, and not own one.
But they are cars, mechanical things, and +10 year old mechanical things / cars, regardless of the maker, suffer 10 year old car problems and need fixing.
Sometimes occasionally, sometimes more occasionally and substantially!
Your “typically” comment is very flattering to the brand, but is a little too ‘blue sky’. Door modules, headlamp LED, rear light water ingress, suspension wishbone arms, engine rads, depending on the market - tracker module, rear subframe corrosion - Then for example consider a V12VS which twinplate clutch will see 60k ish Miles, yet a singleplate V8 clutch will normally do less than a half that, throttle pedals, roof modules, corroding wheel nuts - and then there’s paint corrosion blistering seen on cars worldwide - these sorts of issues are pretty much seen on every car.
It’s perfectly okay to discuss and have the realities of ownership brought out in the open, why hide the blushes of the brand and keep it all quiet - that serves nobody?
Of course, it is possible to own any make of car for a short time period in that cars life, and have no problems whatsoever, in that case the message to the outside world from that owner would be the car is fault free, excellent. But owners before and after that time might have had issues to contend with, meaning on the exact same car, those owners have a less favourable opinion to tell the world.
It’s nice to read your comments based on what? 2 cars for a short time in their life, but during the course of a year my observations are based on +1000 cars, and for the last 12 years! - not counting the 10 years before that I spent with these cars in prototype design.
One of the CZcams channels you mention is an incredibly well detailed, well researched and informative channel bringing tangible help to many owners worldwide without motive of financial gain, not to mention a great watch.
The other one has zero foundation in engineering and exists for financial gain, sometimes selling products which actually cause the very problem the ‘enhancement’ is portrayed to correct (I’ve seen a car inside my workshop with an oil catch can system fitted, the pipework was under-specified to withstand vacuum and the pipework collapsed at full vacuum which actually caused oil pull-over where if the car was left stock, it would not have pulled oil over at any harmful level! The kit was fitted not by an engineer who would have spotted the inadequate materials but by an infotainment system shop - a complete recipe for disaster, and to big that scenario up, is a bit ‘blind leading the blind’!).
I’m glad to read you have had no hassles with the Aston’s you’ve owned 😁

Mike, if the very slight tappet rattle exhibited in video 1 is audible only after cold start for approximately 5 or 10 minutes and then vanishes completely, would that be just normal and give no reason for concern?

Great video and very informative. I have 08 V8V with 39K miles, that is relatively quiet on cold start but I noticed after 20-30 minutes of driving the ticking was rather noticeable when I pulled into my garage. Is this typical that it would be more pronounced once the engine is up to operating temperature?

    • @durianx

I also have the same query.
At cold and before a drive, there’s no metallic ticking but after it’s warmed it’s quite obvious.

My 2007 Aston Marton is doing exactly what you said it has 40.000 miles on it will it hurt it to keep driving it I can not afford to pay to have the motor pulled
