Houseplant Shopping For Dying Sales Clearance Plants at Big Box Stores

  • I Went To big Box Stores ( Lowes, Home Depot and Walmart) To buy plants on clearance, most of the time at 50% that are dying and try to save them. Most of the time these plants just need a little watering! (Like the Peace Lilly).
    If you try this yourself please let me know how it goes.

    I was pretty bummed when I found out that Home Depot doesn’t do clearance on plants. They put them in a trash compactor. So upsetting to think they would rather smash them then sell them at a discount. What a waste.

      Erin O. Griffin the plants for sale at HD are on consignment, if the plants are dying they don't want it sold for less, they are instructed to destroy or dump it to protect the suppliers brand name.

      I was the plant buyer for Home Depot. The system works like this: as the buyer I met once a week with vendors and ordered in certain plants. The majority of plants I ordered were bought outright and as a result we had the ability to mark those down. Corporate had a quarterly promotion schedule and often without warning we would receive huge shipments of seasonal plants. The majority of those promotional plants and virtually all of the bedding plants are there on commission. If you came in our store asking for a donation we were instructed to give the commission plants for free, which seems unethical but it was our manager’s policy. We were not allowed to mark down commission (pay by scan or PBS) plants. If we had too much plant material in the garden department we would receive a shipment of commission plants and put it straight in the enclosed dumpster, . One large family owned nursery in Oregon went out of business because of the sketchy policies of paying commission. It’s terrible corporate greed and disregarded the ability of small businesses to make a profit.

    I love Lowe's clearance section! I bought so many plants. Some lived and some did not. I think it's because it was already too far gone. But at least if I can save some then that's a bonus. I recently rescued a Peace Lily for 5 bucks. It was the best looking one out the bunch. After I cut all of the dead leaves and burnt flowers it was beautiful. I may go out tomorrow and get some more. I don't have much room for them either but have to save the plants!

    I don't see any of them too often in my area that aren't crazy over watered and nearly rotting, so I'll take some dry ones lol.

    I know this is an old video, but I wanted to tell y'all about Home Depot. I saw 2 baskets completely packed with plants that were thrown on top of each other. I assumed they'd be going on clearance and I saw some I wanted to rescue. I asked an employee and they said they will be thrown away. I asked if I could buy some for a discounted price and they told me they aren't allowed to do that? How dumb is that. Some were in very good condition.

Since it's so close to my home, I try to stop by often and see what they have, but it's never a great selection and because they have no clearance section I have left many plants to wither away...

    Home Depot does have a clearance section! It’s usually outside in the back by all the gravel/mulch/bricks but it usually doesn’t have any house plants. They’re more like outdoor landscaping plants. I work for Home Depot and they totally throw all their dying plants away. It breaks my heart I hate it. But they don’t like to sell dying plants. Great score! Good reminder on checking clearance plants for bugs just in case. Yeah, I don’t remember Home Depot ever having a plant clearance section, which is a shame. Maybe they just send the clearance worthy plants back and get credit for them. I haven’t found much at Lowe’s in clearance, although I am hopeful that my search will eventually pay off. I sometimes luck out at Walmart. I found a White Bird of Paradise plant for less than $6 (regular price) and it was *maybe* almost a foot tall. 😍 Walmart also has terra cotta saucers in different sizes for a good price. I’m happy about Walmart’s plant clearance section, but it is sad at the same time...seeing how much help they need and some that are obviously too far gone to even be salvageable.
    Have you checked out Trader Joe’s? Some have cut flowers, but others have plants. I’ve been eyeing a new addition to their stock at on particular store here in Texas. It’s a cactus-like plant grafted with a crested euphorbia on top, I think. It looks so cool! It was about $6.99. I hope to get it tomorrow. They had a handful last week. When I lived in NYC, the Trader Joe’s there had a beautiful Dracaena Marginata for an amazingly low price. I can’t speak for all Trader Joe’s, could be a bust, but not as much so as Aldi’s. Such a disappointment.

    • @anothernight82
      @anothernight82 Před 5 lety

      Erika Lodes , hi! 😂 I can’t argue with you there, because today’s Walmart visit was a shock! I mean, if you want to buy pricey dried clearance twigs in soil for use in a tiny campfire I won’t judge you. I just could ‘t believe the location I went to...seeing some unrevivable plants for sale and they removed over half of their plant section maybe because they’re getting ready for the next season. The majority of the plants on clearance this time around was a huge disappointment, except I did buy one remaining plant that I’ve decided against in the past a very sad Opuntia Emerald Wave cactus in a 4” plastic pot with the clear plastic hanging strip. It was $2.80. Part of the plant looked rotted and dried(the side above the soil level. I didn’t think it would make it, so I didn’t get it. They never watered it, so the soil was bone dry and maybe that helped to stop the progression of rot? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤔 I had to get it this time. It was growing a pretty tall baby plant that looked like one arm dabbing. 😂 I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will make it. Wish me luck!
      Trader Joe’s ran out of the grafted plant I wanted. 😭 I went there and there were none left. 😩 But I am going to remain thankful for trying to save this little Opuntia guy. Trader Joe’s can be a hit or miss, but worth trying if you happen to be driving past one anyway.

    I bought some clearance plants from Lowe’s but when I brought them home found out they were infected. And after that I’ve gone through Walmart Home Depot Lowe’s and they are infected. Do you check for that? And if you do get them how do you get rid of the bugs?

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  Před 4 lety

      Yes! I always check if there are any bugs, especially for clearance plants bc I'm terrified of bringing them into my house 😭If I notice they have bugs or anything I don't purchase, to me it's worth the risk.
      If by accident (or if you're up for the challenge to nursing the plant back to health) step 1 would definitely be to quarantine it & keep it away form any of your other plants! If you know what bugs you have, you can look up specifically how to get rid of them. Even just typing a description of how the bug looks on google can tell you what they are. Otherwise, I would just apply neem oil to the leaves. If you don't have any neem oil, you can mix a mild soap with some water & spray it on the leaves. Check daily to see how your plant is doing & continue spraying until the bugs are gone completely.
