Im kinda shy to talk to strangers, so i’d usually research the heck out of the plant and watch tonnes of youtube videos before going out to buy the plant 😅

Me too generally but I’ve found plant shop people are usually super kind and helpful and never judgmental.
I do the opposite, i buy then google the shits out of it, even when i go to small plant shops where people are nice and helpful.

I do the same but post seeing a plant I like 😅 when I see a plant I like I take a pic of it and the name if available then do lots of research on it before I buy it, or if I really really like it I just buy it bring it home then research it :) I know it's not ideal, but I admit I've done that too
I am so glad you brought out the reality of plants that MOST people do not realize: what you see in the stores was grown in optimum conditions that cannot be duplicated in most peoples homes. People take them home and think they have failed when the plant adjusts to their home conditions and doesn't look nearly as good anymore. ALL plants will look "rough" at some time in one's possession (usually their worst during winter) and we all need to stop thinking that we have failed. Patience is a part of plant ownership and they will adjust/come back for you during the growing seasons.
Something you said, tho, made me want to laugh: you said ask the plant center people for help. Unfortunately, that doesn't work where I live: the employees they hire are clueless teens that know less than nothing. They are there to take your money or load things into your car and that's about it. Here, we plant people are on our own. Thank goodness for the internet, lol!
It's happened to me too (when employees don't know about plants). So I think the more WE know going into shops, the better!
same here! People here don't know anything about plants in the plant shops or greenhouses.
agree. most people are really just reselling and don't really understand what they're selling.
I haven't watched this in a while, I didn't realize how blunt Summer can be. Yet it's good to be upfront on what can be expected on what the plant can become as it adjusts and grows.
Your videos are absolutely amazing! I discovered you from watching the New Yorker video and I am so glad I did. My mother passed away a few weeks ago and I got two plants as a gift. I’ve never owned a plant (besides cacti that I managed to kill) before so I was really nervous to bring them into my apartment. I wanted nothing more than to take care of them in honor of my mother so of course I went to CZcams and luckily found you and others that have been such a great help! Thanks so much for all of your hard work. I’m excited to be on this new journey! My mother at one point had a room full of plants in our den so I’d like to think she would be proud of me for taking interest in this. I also decided to bring her plants back with me so I can continue to take care of them.

Checking the roots... makes me think of kicking a car's tyres when shopping 🤣 wouldn't the shop get annoyed? What if the soil all falls out? Great advice but I'd be scared to try that
I highly recommend a peace lily to any beginner. It thrives in waterlogged soil and lower light. Mine is probably 10 years old and has unbelievably lush and dark green foliage. And it tells you when it’s ready to have its roots flooded again by drooping it’s leaves.
I just bought my first one - a Domino. 🤞 Wish me luck. 🙂
My heart jumped when you started to touch that succulent. The farina doesnt get replaced.
The people at my local plant store dont know much about the plants they sell and when they pretend they do, they often give the wrong information. It makes me really sad that they are only in it for profits/a paycheck and have no real passion for plants. I'd rather just got to Walmart or Lowes where the employees are just as uneducated but they don't bother you or give you the wrong information and the prices aren't inflated as much.

yes. here in Portugal is the same thing. so sad
RDR yeah I live in the Midwest and there aren’t really any houseplant stores, you can occasionally get a snake plant here and there but it’s all just flowers and gardening stuff. People there don’t know anything about plants and they drown the plants and it’s horrible. There’s only big box stores like Lowe’s and Walmart where the selection is just as bad, a few succulents with no drainage hole. Yay Michigan😕
I just found several Calathea musaicas labeled as a ZZ raven! The woman did not care even though it’s very different care. 😖
I work in a plant shop and people who pull the pots off always make a big mess and leave plants all over the place.
I wondered about that when I saw it. I suspect most plant shops would not approve.
These 'Back to Basics' videos are PERFECT! I nominate Summer as 'International Ambassador to the Plant-world'...seriously!

Thank you for the pep talk regarding the optimum nursery condition plant quality versus our in-home version once the plant is purchased. Especially with a Lipstick plant being the example, since it is one of mine that has given me that exact sort of frustrating, "what am I doing wrong?" moments!

There are free Light meter apps available on both iOS and Android. Everyone should download these first and measure the light in the spot where they want to keep a plant. Sometimes what we perceive as enough light isn't actually enough for the plant. This helped me tremendously when I first started collecting plants.
Keep doing this videos I'm learning sooo much! And building my confidence with plants I started with cacti and now I stepping up with indoor plants!!! Thank u so much

I use a slightly bigger cache pot and put leca beads at the bottom, within a few days the extra water evaporates and creates humidity for the plant while not damaging the roots at the base of the pot.
Succulents are so cute, my favorite plant and i started collecting them years ago

This was sooo good, Summer!! I still need to work up the courage to actually pull plants out of the pots at the nursery before bringing them home. I especially needed to do this recently b/c the Peperomia Rosso I brought home had spider mites in the soil and I had no idea for like a week. It's since been quarantined in a Ziploc bag until I figure our how to get rid off them. 😳 Thanks so much for all the teachings!! 💚💚
Most of my pants are in terracotta..I feel that they do best there for me..other planters are beautiful have great designs but for me it's more about my plants surviving! Plus terracotta gives it a rustic look that I love🤗 I once killed a Jade plant :/ potted it into a lovely jar but didnt have drainage and it drowned!! I managed to cut a good part and propagated it then once it grew roots I repotted it ..now I have a new Jade plant and learned my lesson..

It's reignited my passion but I've hopelessly forgotten everything so its a slow process. Every question I had you answered in this video - as well as so many tips that I'd never think to ask. Really enjoying these back to basics videos. I didn’t know the tip about putting terra-cotta on wood and having your saucers glazed. I actually was wondering why my wood was getting rings on it. So thank you for that tip!

I glue thin cardboard to the bottoms of my basins/saucers to prevent the staining of wood. Learned this from my mom years ago and it works fine.
I know you didn't ask- but in case you were wondering- they're called overalls or dungarees!

My Wal-Mart has the bases that match terracotta pots, and they are plastic. Summer, have you ever considered opening your own plant shop/greenhouse? Kippee can be your assistant😊

I usually keep my plants in a nursery pot and have that in a watertight cover pot but I add a saucer that's upside down between the nursery pot and the cover pot, this way the water drains away from the nursery pot and then as it evaporates it provides a bit of humidity

I grow my tropicals outdoors since i live in a tropical climate. But indoors. I keep a mix of tropical and hardened temperate plant (Camelia japonica)

That’s a lovely cactus, in the beginning
For some reason after eons of owning plants and being a pretty good green thumb I’ve JUST discovered African violets (like I knew they existed but never thought of owning them) and how much I LOVE them!! I got my first one a few weeks ago and I’m hooked! Lol......I own everything from monsteras to burro tails.
The store worker is really good! Wish I have someone like her around here.
