    The first time I played this with my wife, I looked like I was dominating. All my patches were beautifully put on my blanket. And I kept a steady stockpile of buttons coming in. Two moves from the end she came back and beat me by double digits. Had a great time. We will definitely be getting this to the table more often. Great couples game

    To any hesitant viewers, I can attest that this game is fantastic. My wife and I absolutely love it.

      Look at you enjoying Tom Vasel. I didn't even know you were into board games. I just picked this game up and can't wait to try it. Hope you guys are doing well.

    Sheesh, so many people complaining about this being a "quilt game". Do you call Hive "the bug game" also? It's an abstract, it means that it's all about mechanics. Theme is there only for pretty components, get over it. This is a really elegant game, and it has nothing to do with actual quilting.

    Yep. My wife and I look for 2 player games that she can be into. She is definitely not into the crunchy-Euro. And she sews quilts. A win-win for us. Thanks Tom!

    1:05 - the goal of this game is not to get the most buttons, but to get the most points (because for every uncovered spot on the board you get negative 2 points).

    I literally just got this game in my hands today. I had to pause this video to get it out of the box. Can't wait to play it! :)

    Nice little fast game. Outcome can also vary a lot: Played it for the first time yesterday with a friend at a boardgame café. Went on a rampage in first match winning 33-10, then lost the re-match 7-11. Great fun for a "warm-up" for something bigger (Maybe if you're two people waiting for more people to join for a bigger game :)

    Sounds like this game has too few currencies! :p

      I believe BGG.com has the plastic buttons available at their store. They look to be the exact same ones I had bought from Michaels when I initially upgraded my copy.

    I know I'm commenting on an old video but got this game today and it is the first board game I've bought after playing and learning the app first ...

  • @xblChrRome
    @xblChrRome Před 8 lety +2

    In this video Tom doesn't really put enough emphasis on the board with the two player pieces. Most of the strategy in the game is maneuvering along that little board to try and manipulate your way to getting the small 1x1 patches or setting up the purchase of pieces multiple turns in advance.

  • @RenbroNL
    @RenbroNL Před 3 lety +1

    I feel like this game is kinda underrated, like this review. The game packs quite a lot of game relatively to how easy it is. Fast setup, quick playtime, fun and a theme everyone is ok with.

    • @RenbroNL

      @@Arjay82 Right ok that is true, that is more amongst those that aren't that invested in the hobby though. But I ment more amongst critics / fans.
      And yeah the game is definitely well rates. But I feel it should be a bit higher on peoples list.

  • @theindyjt
    @theindyjt Před 9 lety +3

    I don't think Tom mentioned it in his review (totally possible I missed it), but once you put a piece on your board, is it set there for the rest of the game, or can you rearrange pieces as you go along?

    It’s funny how we still need these older videos in order to learn how to play games.

  • @nshaw1299
    @nshaw1299 Před 3 lety +1

    I really enjoy the game except for one major thing - it seems that it's 'way too easy' to end up with zero/negative score in the end (which kids less understand, and feels like the play ended in a 'total wash' instead of just being 'bad play compared to other times').
    Do u feel the same?

  • @TyphoidBryan
    @TyphoidBryan Před 9 lety +2

    Patchwork's a fantastic game, no doubt about it. A very interesting abstract with money management and a great emphasis on tactical moves. Anyone who enjoys building or creating something in a board game should find something to enjoy about Patchwork. The end game scoring is very, very good, too. Fill up your template, you have less empty spaces that drain you of points. Use your buttons well enough and you should be able to absorb those penalties. I enjoy the setup of the patches around the scoring board. You can see well enough ahead to plan for the next few moves to get you in a position to take what you want and not let your opponent grab those VERY important filler patch pieces. Mostly tactical, but that splash of strategy helps give Patchwork some depth.
    Not sure why theming is a problem. It's a quick-playing game that's engaging and just "thinky" enough to avoid being shallow and boring. My favorite release of 2014 and a must-have for couples and others who focus mainly on two-player gaming.

    I would totally buy this if it had a more exciting theme. Even generic fantasy (collecting dragon eggs or some such crap) would be a hundred times more interesting for me personally.

  • @yes4me
    @yes4me Před 9 lety

    Thanks for showing this. Besides the unusual theme, the game is really a puzzle with a light strategy. The scoring board is hard on the eyes to look at. Overall, it is average, and can be boring after a while. I can see myself playing this once or twice, but I don't see myself buying it..

  • @jennifergeorge7280

    I see you also have a patch cross shaped without the buttons cost. I think it is an error? I would have written 0. For now we take it as it is free... what do you do?

    • @NealDavis82
      @NealDavis82 Před 5 lety +1

      Lorenzo Liverani it’s a free one. Not a misprint.

    • @NealDavis82
      @NealDavis82 Před 5 lety +1

      The strategy is in lining yourself up to be able to capitalize on the most cost effective pieces while denying them your opponent. This is a brilliant game.

    Funny how many comment about it being a good 'wife' or 'female' counter-part game. I happen to be female and not sew and not be into quilting and if my significant other brought this home to me I'd give him the stink eye. That being said, I do like the tetris feel of trying to fit the tiles in and would ignore the theme to try and appreciate the game mechanics instead. I think ANYONE can enjoy simplistic games from time to time, women or men.

    • @Orion3T
      @Orion3T Před 9 lety +9

      In defense, I think many of us are speaking from direct experience with our wives/girlfriends, but I certainly agree its wrong to generalise! In my case my wife does find it hard to get into complex games and if I can find simpler 30 minute games she's more likely to give it a go and enjoy it. In this case it does fit with her hobbies as she likes sewing/stitching making clothes etc. It is interesting, I don't think I have ever seen any women comment that short/simple game X would be great to play with their non-gamer husband/boyfriend. I'm sure there are gamer girls who have non-gamer partners but they do seem quite rare.

    • @billjensen51
      @billjensen51 Před 9 lety +4

      My wife likes quilting. My wife likes tile laying games. My wife does not like "nerdy" themed games as she calls it. For my particular wife (I have no idea about others) this looks like something she might like. You do have a good point Madbonna1, but for my wife this looks like one she might possibly enjoy. To be honest, theme aside, I think I might like it as well.

    • @ProfOfHifi
      @ProfOfHifi Před 9 lety +3

      I don't like sewing, and the theme is not very interesting in the game, but it's a fun game. For me the theme is not an obstacle, but i think i will play this game more with women. But it's just because the theme will scare men off the game.

    • @jamma246

    I'm all for designers making games with fresh themes. That being said, I don't want to play a game about making a quilt. Here's to hoping he's working on the Caverna expansion. Lets hope he's not instead making a game about cleaning out a fridge or folding laundry or something.

  • @adamheeley285
    @adamheeley285 Před 5 lety

    Im sorry but the theme of this game is horrible. Who the hell finds quilting exciting??? The should have made it a town building game or something.
