- Saxophonist Alexa Tarantino (MM '19, Jazz Studies) shares her typical day at Juilliard: practicing; mentoring; taking classes on the business of jazz with Ed Buller of Jazz at Lincoln Center, improvisation with Marc Cary, and ear training; attending her private lesson with Dan Block and saxophone studio class with Ron Blake; and performing with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, led by Jerome Jennings, at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. Opening Music: Juilliard Jazz Orchestra performance of "Neanderthal," an original composition by bassist Russell Hall (BM '16, Jazz Studies).
Led by Juilliard alumnus trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis, Juilliard Jazz is one of the most exciting and innovative jazz programs in the country. It combines education in the history and traditions of jazz with professional performance opportunities designed to integrate students into a thriving jazz environment. As a jazz student, you will work closely with a dedicated faculty made up of some of today’s most renowned jazz artists and enjoy numerous performance opportunities as a member of the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and smaller ensembles not only at Juilliard, but also in prominent venues and festivals in New York and beyond.

Having "isfahan" play in the background just made the video even more enjoyable
Great sounding band, as I imagine it would be. When I was growing up, there was no jazz program at Juilliard, although many great jazz players had gone there: Miles, Tito Puente, Henry Mancini, Andre Previn, Nina Simone (who originally wanted to be a classical pianist), on & on.
I was at a high school jazz festival that another school was holding and my school's jazz band went. Alexa Tarentino held a clinic and played. It was awesome
there are so many good jazz musicians now a days coming out of the colleges yet 95 % will most likely find no way to support themselves thru performing alone
Arin Gokdemir Such is the nature of art in general. Not everybody who gets a degree will automatically sell platinum albums. Everyone wants to prove their salt, and as a result there are lots of people who are willing to invest in higher education like this, but percieved value of the artist by the consumers doesn't really match too well, and there's only so many gigs around. The result is a hyper saturated position that people who are hyper qualified fill.
+Reeves Wilson yes, it is a high expectations school :)
@@alti_gottem lol no
@@alti_gottem I dont know how to tell you that you're just wrong. You're flat out wrong. Julliard conservatory is a college
@@alti_gottem 0:44 ("undergraduate").

The whole video: (The woman is clearly in her 20's)
Dude you're just flat out wrong. Julliard is a fine arts college in New York
4:00 Oh. Glad to see Arturo Sandoval doing his family stuff...
her tone is beautiful
the song in the background give me the chills, i transcribed isfahan for a grade in collegue. I am close to finishing my bachelors degree in music :,)
Thank you for watching! It's a great piece, and we loved filming the Juilliard Jazz interpretation with Alexa.
When I watch this video I remember when jazz came to my life. beautiful 😍. I love jazz.
Thank you so much for the answer
Whoa what a program! Looks amazing! 🎷
It really does....alto, tenor, and bari player here!
When i tell you this is my dream...this is my dream. I wanna do the trumpet but still like- this looks incredible.
I love the Johnny Hodges in the background
So refreshing to see a "Kinder Gentler" Jazz school experience. I attended UNT in Denton in the 70's and it was a very macho-male dominated place with some very nasty people.(The Buddy Treatment) Great to hear teachers compliment students. That practice at NT was seen as making you weak. The "Whiplash" approach even if it works is not the way to go. Go Julliard!!! Much Healthier .
Over my long career I have found that nice people can be monster players.
Thats sad
Lol Julliard I heard is just as toxic
@@isaiahz.jackson7720 wait explain!
WestTexas_ Idk just do ur research man I’m more of a public school music schools Like UNT. I’ve seen a video about this current actress (can’t find it rn otherwise I would have linked it) who absolutely hated it and it really took the fun out of acting for her. Which obviously everyone can relate to when your doing something on that high of a level it’s really easy to be stressed. Even tho she said she hated she did end up graduating and found success so I mean pick your poison ig. 🤷♀️
@@isaiahz.jackson7720 yes gillian jacobs
Your father looks just like Arturo Sandoval, at least in the shot at 4:00
Jon Fontan yo that's true AHAAH I saw Sandoval yesterday at a performance!
I thinked the same!!! HAHAHAHA
memories....♫♫♫
you sound amazing!!!!
Im in love 💕💕💕💕🤣🎆
Now I wanna go to Juilliard! Haha
how long do you practice every day because you are insane with the saxophone!
Musician crush!
I was told last year that I was the worst saxophonist at my school, but about a month ago Ernie Watts came and said he liked my playing but I'm still working on coming up and I still need to work on Jazz but don't know if I should work on counting (which I never learned.) or learning more blues and be bop scales to improvise on.
Thank you for watching -- keep on practicing and learning. Our jazz students find that knowing both music theory (the basics of rhythm, counting, etc.) and jazz history help them be well-rounded musicians in all genres.
You are the BEST !
Don’t listen to anyone who just says you are bad. Listen to people who give you real advice to improve.
Glaasical guitar next please !!!
Olá, sou brasileiro, queria saber como fazemos para ingressarmos no curso superior em saxofone, alguém saberia me informar?
Hello, I'm Brazilian, I wanted to know how to get into the saxophone course, would anyone know to inform me?
Love her tone on Isfahan. Anybody know what sax and mouthpiece she’s playing on. Just curious
Probably hard Work and Dedication. :)
This is my dream. I hope I achieve it.
Que maravilha de escola!
Gostaria de saber quanto custa estudar saxofone nessa escola de jazz...
One day that will be me
Hah, good luck
MegIsOverIt • same

Good luck us
Good luck all of you
What a dream
I heard Isfahan ayy
that slack notification sound that snuck in at 0:37 XD
😍
Can i apply with 42 or too old?
If I only i knew I wanted to take music to the next level before college...
Earthelena Garrett ikr
01:03 Edu Ribeiro!? Awesome drummer.
#JazzIsBack
Sadly no.
Well now I just miss my sax..
Juilliard is my dream school but that 8% acceptance rate is kinda scary. I’m a sophomore in High School and I’ve been playing Tenor Sax for almost 4 years. I’m trying to get into playing Jazz. My improve on a scale of 1-10 is like a 3 if I’m being generous. Any tips on how to better my chances of getting in?
When my mom got in (a few decades ago), she had studied privately with one of the professors there so that she was fully prepared for the audition. Add to that consistent + dedicated PRACTICE!
What guitar is that at 2:26?
Renato Diaz hollowbody electric guitar (commonly used in jazz)
I was so sad in the saxophone workshop there was no Bari sax
MegIsOverIt • yeah they need me
If only pepper adams was still with us.
where is beri and saprano?
Every time I hear something about Juilliard I think about how Miles Davis dropped out after he started hanging out with Charlie Parker.
the slack message @ 0:37 gave me quite a scare, and i remembered i wasnt working on a saturday
It's so cool, but so sad it's not everyone.. Even the ones who are artistically talented! That fact is sadder than the year 2020
Is that Immanuel Wilkins sittin' in that Sax Studio class??
4:00 Bruh I screamed when I thought that was Arturo Sandoval
one day
Liza koshy's resemblences, does anyone spot that out :>?
There isn't a day in life of a guitarrist. That means if i want to join guitar is not that good like the other instruments?
Thank you for watching. We haven't been able to chronicle all of the instruments offered at Juilliard on video yet, but the jazz division is strong in all instruments, and we have a noted classical guitar program as well.
0:48 to 1:00 what song is that?
I think I've heard it b4 and I think it's a standard.
Alone Together
Immanuel Wilkins 👀 3:33
what what what 1:05 thats freakin edu ribeiro!!!!!
At Juilliard, musicianship and artistry are developed as a means to engage and inspire our local and global communities. Juilliard creates countless pathways for students to explore. The link below is a video of the jazz song "Spain" played with the traditional Korean instrument "Haegeum".

Just a question: how much does it cost?
Alessandro Vaccari an arm and a leg
Legit 40k a year
Yep 40k a year I sadly didn't go because of that
I thought it was a Beatles cover
Revoharrison Hendrix oddity me too
Lucky Freaks!
1:04 EDU RIBEIRO???? BRAZIL =D
Why did the side profile of the girl in the thumbnail look so much like liza koshy 🙃
Julliard is great but i wish they had a more diverse student community..it may have to do with the socioeconomic problems in this country.
jealousy level: 1000000000
high level school
60 grand a year,,,, so you will get $30 gigs
Blind faith.id rather go blind
Jeez, welcome to life... as bad as I want to pursue a music career, yea I want to make some money at least
You could work on the side and play jazz on your free time!
There seems to be more financial support and opportunities in europe...spain, france etc.
Whiplash!
Lol nah
lol no
You're supposed to be artists not professionals.. that's why all we hear in today's jazz is no more than a series of sterile academic exercises. You need to delve into your own soul to be able to find your unique voice in the instrument. The audience has already been alienated from Jazz not only because it is difficult to appreciate musically but it no longer moves their emotions.
