If he could do things at an elite level other than long balls though he wouldn’t need those players to play balls over the top to, he could still play well using other technical strengths. His one dimensionality is an issue. Shouldn’t be the teams responsibility to have all the players just specifically to suit his play style.

This is also football, a team sport and I agree with the comment @mrcarlo5357 made about the difference in quality with their forwards. The problem is not the midfield it’s actually the front 3 cos who is the solid front 3 for this England squad?? Matter fact what is the strongest team that Southgate can put together from this squad? And can he develop them and can they train to the point where they have great chemistry like the French team. I genuinely think that there are individuals that are WAY more deserving of a starting spot than others. I think the formation we use is wrong, I think these players don’t gel well cos of the experience and no experience. Trent can’t play to his best abilities because he does not have chemistry with any player on that pitch but Jude and Saka. And that’s Southgate’s doing. I watched the game with a friend who doesn't watch a lot of football. We spoke before the match and I was asked who I thought would win the tournament, I told him England should be considered a contender to win. They have a decent GK, decent defenders, world class midfielders and some of the worlds best attackers.
I was really shocked TAA got subbed at 55', thinking the real problem was that no one was moving on the pitch. Saka just walks around the pitch, Foden did some runs, and Kane dropping too deep. It was in my opinion to little runs to open up areas to play. Credit to Denmark for their incredible marking and work eithics tracking back and pressing, but I honestly believe that having more movement in the midfield and more direct runs would open up sooo much space for the creatives like Trent, Foden and Bellingham to either drive the ball forward or give a well timed pass to someone making those runs.
Most passes from England were going backwards, and you could see that Pickford tried to get the team moving, and even gave a nod to Stones (I believe it was Stones) when he didn't have anyone to pass so he gave away a corner. The tactics Southgate are playing with seems way below the par of the players, and he needs to evolve the tactics so the players can shine.
I'm no expert at all, I just found it incredible how Denmark, who do have some decent players, totally dictated the midfield in possesion, did runs and showed themselves to be able to get the ball moving whilst England who undoubtedly have more quality in every position didn't manage nearly as many progressive passes.
Another thing that baffled me was the fact that Rice and TAA play as 6's, but I thought it looked like Trent were way more deep than Rice most of the game, let him roam around the pitch to be able to utilize the incredible passing he has instead of making him play out of position as a defensive midfielder were he has to do more defensive work than the best English 6 atm.

I'm a Liverpool fan and loved having TAA at our club. But I've been really frustrated with his attitude on the pitch, almost as if he thinks he's too good to try. We all wanted him to move to midfield. He isn't cut out for a CM role where there's pressure from all sides. He doesn't need to care about pressure at right back. He gets the ball, he pings the ball, never the need for any sharpness. He also never moves to receive the ball. He's in the way all the time and the other players don't trust him, which is why they never pass to him in tight areas
That said, hardly anyone made a run in behind, and when they did, TAA didn't pick it out for some reason. No presence on the left with Trippier and Foden for TAA to ping a pass. Why is TAA on the pitch when no one is is making those runs?

Yeah I can't see why so few people are discussing the fact the fullbacks are the problem. You've got an old rightfooted Tripper on the left side and a still great but old, less attacking Walker on the right. Defences aren't getting stretched often enough. Everything is supposed to happen centrally but that crowds out Bellingham's space and leads to Kane dropping back.
Trent is the solution, not the problem. Play him at rightback and let him bomb forwards, either staying wide when Saka cuts in, or drifting in when Saka stays wide. People always criticise his defensive frailties but England's defence hasn't been the issue. Play Walker as the right-sided CB so he can cover Trent's defensive duties, Rice can also drop back. Gallagher running back and forth to progress play makes more sense when the fullbacks stretch the pitch. Why he didn't bring any other left backs in the squad is beyond me, or even anyone dynamic and aggressive who could play there. Part of me wonders if Joe Gomez is a better option than Tripper but neither are ideal. If it has to be someone rightfooted at leftback who is going to predictably cut in, Foden needs to stay wider.
Trent is an incredibly skilled crosser of the ball and having him charge out wide will scare defences and open up space in the centre when they move to block him. It just seems obvious to me but half the pundits are too busy complaining that's he's not a good enough CM to deserve being played.

He is actually part of the problem, since he's obviously uncomfortable in midfield. But no runners in behind, kane and foden preferring to play in midfield works against him as well. In my opinion Trent being a midfielder is a creation of the English media.
Klopp did not play Trent in midfield and instead purchased a bunch of midfielders last summer - that should tell you everything.
Englands trouble is they “feel” players should play in certain positions where better managers at their clubs don’t see them playing. They get into the England side playing a certain way and are asked to play out of position for England.
Crucial areas of the team are not playing in an ideal position. This is the managers fault - it’s his job to play the right players a in the right positions at the right time. Scapegoating players hasn’t won England any trophies.

So much always written about Trent because he divides opinion. Media over hype his abilities (probably afraid of being black balled for interviews) when in reality which pro couldn't focus on crossing/deadball and be slightly better than average. When he's absent for Liverpool, they do fine (someone else steps up) and if he were that class of elite midfielder then that'd be his position for Liverpool. This pundit will wax lyrical but he's not being balanced. Trent doesn't have anything more than the other players. Am even surprised that with not much competitive experience, he gets to start in midfield in the Euros (because maybe he should have been playing midfield for England for the past 2 years if this was anything like a well thought out plan.....)

What you are not saying explicitely, but ends up being the takeaway remains the same: It's a Southgate thing.
HOW do you play Trent yet the entire team around him does not play in a way that suits him? It makes no sense. Whether he stays in midfield, goes back to right side or hell, comes off the bench. If the players around him aren't told to make runs on a constant basis, if your striker keeps dropping low at the same time, then Trent is basically useless.
What England have shown is tactical malpractice and they are LUCKY to have yet to be punished for their lack of coherence and rythm.
As you said, they're not close to Spain and Germany at the moment. The changes for them to be much closer are not the hardest to make, but I don't trust Southgate to make the right adjustements.
And the players will keep doing whatever they're doing and it'll keep on looking weird on the pitch.

All our midfielders are far more accomplished and dynamic. He slows the game down and doesn't look comfortable on the ball when under pressure. Also off the ball he's rarely in the game. He simply doesn't press enough. I hope Slott stands his ground and doesn't indulge him. From a Liverpool perspective Trent in midfield makes us to open. It handicaps us.

I think Trent has real problems now…. No one doubts his talents…
But he needs to decide how to play…

This causes a huge problem for Liverpool defensively
I honestly believe if he was switched on with his defending as an example… we dont lose that CL final goal to Madird in Paris… 🤷‍♂️
He can only play midfield if you give him a free role and have the rest of the 10 men be a good enough team to pick up the slack with defending.
You need a perfect system and team to play Trent in midfield.
If Trent plays in Midfield for LFC next season forget winning the league.
Trent honestly only works in Real Madrid… in a free role in that team with a league that has less or no competeition.

    So which one is it?
Play him at right back or in midfield.
The problem is Garth Southgate. His style of play is boring, rubbish.
England scored the first goal and then they did Stoke city tactics where they put 10 players behind the ball. I said once England scored the first goal to make it 2,3,4 and then make substitutions and England didn't do that and got punished. So the way I see it the sooner Southgate is sacked the better because he lack awareness. The ability to change tactic and formation when the game isn't going England's way. He sticks with the same boring tactics and formation and as long as he is England manager I don't see England winning anything on the international stage.
