I’ve been watching Slovakia , Slovenia , Georgia , Albania etc and they all seem to be able to play some decent joined up football and they have a coherent system and plan. They play triangles , quick sharp passes , keep the ball well , press with intelligence. How the hell are England in this mess ? It’s unbelievable that these smaller nations can figure stuff out and Southgate and his team can’t.

As an argentinian, it's insane how you've stuck with this man at the helm for so long. A manager that's never won a difficult match, just coasted through the easy ones. A manager that changes up a whole front line at 70 minutes (something I'm not against in principle if you're not doing well) with 3 runners, and 5 minutes earlier took off the only long pass specialist in the team (TAA) in favor of a man who is very good imo, but can't make a 5mts pass, much less a long one (Gallagher).
You have so much talent to exploit, such a good team to go far and even win tournaments, but you're stuck with an absolute donkey becuse (he knit the team together)

He doesn't start a press, he doesn't attempt to run in behind, There is no out ball when we win the ball back near our box as Kane is by our box too. Opposition defence even step up as they know Kane isn't really an issue. People say we need runners for Kane? He doesn't even get into space quick enough to do his through balls that he is good at. I really think we need to think about starting Watkins and hope we don't miss Kanes lethality inside the box.

A suicidal choice at club level but based on results the right choice. Play Trent right back (at least against Slovenia and teams where the opposition winger is not a major threat) with Bellingham and Rice holding with Foden in the AM position, Gordon left and Saka right, then ideally Kane if he is willing to mix his runs and do a bit of pressing, but Watkins is also an option. Trent would be on the ball in a comfortable area that he is used to with the ball down the channel to Saka, across to Gorden or inside to a Bellingham or Foden. Obviously the defensive pace of Kyle walker is great but on the ball he is usually a dead end. So when England should have the majority of the possession play Trent.

It’s completely made Trent the fall guy because he’s out of his depth there, he can’t get forward and create and his weaknesses are more exposed there. I’ve never seen him look more timid than he did last night, like he was terrified of making a mistake.
After watching how awful the Serbia game was, how did Southgate think I’ll play the exact same 11 in that same set up. Play the same 11 but change the system. Clearly the 4-2-3-1 doesn’t work with the personnel on the pitch.
The average position of the team for the 15 minutes after the goal was disgusting. I’ve never seen anything more shameful. All of them were camped out in and around the box except Saka. Who was just waiting for a pass.
Southgate is a massive problem. He says they haven’t replaced Phillips - well either play Wharton or better yet, be a better manager that can get the best out of your players by playing a system where you don’t need a Phillips. Or I don’t know
.. play your warm up games in that system so the players can get used to it.
I expect Trent to be dropped for Gallagher and I expect them to not be much better unless he switches the system around because he’s got them playing trash football atm.
He needs to go after this tournament, even if he wins it (which LOL)
At least they’ll all be available for pre season with their clubs at this rate.

Unless there’s a big turnaround very quickly, I think we’re going to reach the QFs at best. I genuinely hope I’m wrong and Southgate turns it around but I think he’s taken us as far as he can.
When he was appointed, we were at rock bottom. He stabilised us defensively, brought in a great team spirit and got the country united towards team in 2018 as expectations were low. As we’ve then progressed with him, we’ve pulled away and outgrown him with the players we now have available. He’s been brilliant for the most part, he really has but we need a new manager after the tournament. He’s a very good defensive-solid manager but asking him to get his sides playing free-flowing attacking football isn’t in his skillset.
Each manager has a tactical approach and core fundamentals in how they want their teams to play, the players we have and the manager we have aren’t best suited now. It’s like saying to Steve Bruce, go and get your teams to play like Klopp or Pep, he wouldn’t be able to do it. Yes those first 20 mins against Serbia were brilliant, but we reverted to type and went defensive to protect what we’ve got. It’s a mindset we need to change and that comes from the manager.
Also, why we’re still experimenting 2 games into the tournament is bewildering. He should know the core of his team and the way he wants us to play months in advance of the first game. We wasted the friendlies in the build up. Play your strongest team at the start, get the cohesion and then swap as those games go on. Nope, we experimented and played people who he’s left behind or not using.
Like I say, I bloody hope he proves me wrong but it may well be too late to turn it around. We need a big reaction on Tuesday or it’ll end in tears
again.

I get the argument against it, that Bellingham being a forward-minded player might empty midfield to get forward, and should be given the license to do so, but that instability it would create would be attenuated by the fact our two full-backs are very conservative. Trippier would actually be better suited to playing more narrow to cover for Bellingham's forward movements than he is running up and down the left wing.

More fantasy football playing an imaginary game in the head of an apparently more sober and thoughtful pundit. This does not address teams that love the counter-press like Austria and the physically domination of England. The glaring weakness at LB and the targeting by teams of Trippier, while unable to support the LW. The lack of height or physical power both offensively and defensively. The lack of endurance. The willingness for a number of teams to play grinding, destructive football. The mental frailties caused by playing two crushingly physical games , the ability of deep lying playmakers like Kroos to pop a ball down the channels and do what Germany did to Scotland in the first 10 minutes before applying the killing blow.
It's as though English football hasn't learnt any lessons since 1970-that its great teams with a tried and tested pattern of play win the big games, not 'Plan B' (or is it C now) so beloved by the British media class and fandom.
Well done James, you've out Southgate Southgate and the likes of Andrich, Kante, Rhordi, are never going to thrive in any of the set ups presented by this ill thought out panic presentation. When an entire nation can't pick a starting 11 without descending into farce, when apparently Rashford and Grelish lack of work rate isn't an issue and should be playing, when chucking kids with little or no experience is the key and a 34 year old German manager plays with three formations dependant on game state, then your way out of your depth.

Unfortunately, this is completely wrong. This video didn't have any criticism of Bellingham and he is where the midfield lacks balance. You mention his pressing creating the goal but it doesn't, the goalkeeper makes a poor decision unrelated to Bellingham. Madrid do not press in the way most modern teams do and it's clear when you watch Bellingham. His passing was also awful (many players were too 2nd half but from the start he was poor) excluding the pass to Watkins and he slowed the game down repeatedly. Despite his individual quality and ability to score, any midfield 3 without Bellingham would function better - play him as an 8 and watch. Kane may be carrying an injury, in which case he shouldn't play, but, no matter what, Foden must play centrally.

    • @Arrowchucka

Not only that but Kane is playing like he has at Bayern, he doesn’t get involved with the press. Everyone else around him presses and he will do 1 of 2 things, sit on the shoulder of the CB ready to run into the box or hang back waiting for the pass (like we see in the clip).
Harry Kane and Jude are 2 of the best players in the world right now but play for 2 very different systems. They weren’t able to play together in the warm up games and you can train on something all you like but sometimes it takes a few games to get it right. We see this all the time in club football.
Everyone clamouring for Southgate to be sacked (which I think regardless of the result, his time is up after this tournament) and then arguing a midfield of Foden, Bellingham and Rice behind Kane is the solution, would do no better.

All of them without exception executed terrible passes. It tells you that they have no cohesion. It wasn't about the passing. We praise good passers so much that we forget that it depends on teammates knowing where to be and how to make runs. Looking at the game.yesterday you can see that they were all out of sync.
When a team is out of sync, the first and most important symptom is poor passing from people who are normally good passers.
It was the single theme that the commentators were hammering yesterday.
I'm not picking on any player AT ALL. Saka, Foden, Kane, Bellingham, Rice, Trent, they all receive the ball and lose it because they don't know where their teammates are within a second. The time it takes a player in the midfield to look around is time you're dispossessed. You need to be in sync.
This is not a team. They can't even play out from the back.

We need to pick a system and players that suit it. For me, a change in style to be more direct suits us better and you only have to change Foden for Gordon, have Trent drop very deep to collect the ball and look for those runs. Trent in midfield clearly isn’t working, therefore he should move Rice to a single pivot 6 and play Foden and Bellingham as 10’s/8’s. Both of them could interchange and take turns attacking and defending. You saw in the Denmark game how Foden was clearly fed up of not being able to effect the game on the LW, so he dropped really deep and central and demanded the ball, when he got the ball he carried in past half of their team multiple times and was a lot more effective.
If you want to be more safe you could try and play Adam Wharton next to Rice as a double Pivot, you would probably have to sacrifice Foden for a half but it would make the midfield more balanced and we would control the game better. You could then use Foden as an effective sub in the second half. Trent isn’t working in that position, and there is no clear replacement so why not try Wharton?
You then play someone like Anthony Gordon on the LW to stretch the play. He adds pace and directness and gives the players something to aim for. Trent could also come on and effect the game from RB if needed. Also make the use of Cole Palmer if one of the attacking players isn’t performing. Same goes for Kane with Watkins and Toney.
Southgate has options he just needs to use them and make the changes fast.

Southgate has picked a team, and squad, with square pegs for round holes. Playing a counter attacking system (after we've taken the lead) with forward players that want the ball into feet and don't make the runs in behind. Why play Trent in midfield if you don't have any players making runs he can pick out. Couldn't understand why so many England fans wanted Trent in CM when he ISN'T a midfielder and doesn't have the attributes to play there. We need a far more stable structure to get the best out of our key players; Jude, Kane, Foden etc.
Not bringing on Palmer, Mainoo and Gordon is very worrying given that they're the players that are most likely to give us the structure this team needs. A lot to improve between now and the knock out stages.

Surely we just abuse the right hand side, 4-3-3 saka, Foden and Trent, bring Gomez in as lb, Gordon Lw, when we are attacking Gomez stays back to form a 3 for defensive stability, rice has the legs to cover in front, would want stones in the middle of the 3 so who would you pick at RCB I’m not sure, bigger games bring in Walker for Trent and allow stones to step in next to rice like he has done for city so that Jude and Foden are free to move

3 at the back 1 single pivot (rice) with stones pushing forward when in possession into the ‘Trent’ space allowing Rice to be an 8 not a 6. Will allow full backs to push on and Foden / Saka not to be as wide

I agree with james i think play "foden's team" tactics and use bellingham as more of a box to box and clear the 10 space so that foden can go to work you do that by stretching the play wide also which is why gordon must come in on the left if im honest i'd be uncomfortable leaving kane out but i would light a fire underneath him by taking him aside and telling him to be much more varied in his runs come short by all means when its on and we overload with the wingers in behind but on occasion give your creative players the chance to find you in the box with a killer pass or a long ball to get us up the pitch if we are under the cosh in short gordon for trent and a tweak in the tactical side and we should see a vast improvement the caveat of course to all of this is does southgate see what we do i don't think so i think he'll go gallagher for TAA and keep foden out wide which just won't solve the issues in my opinion

I think Trippier starting at LB says everything there is to know about Southgate as a manager. Trippier has been solid for England over the years but just had a horrible season playing in his preferred position (let alone playing out of position). Southgate is not courageous enough to make even basic decisions for the betterment of the team. He is too rigid and borderline cowardly, so It’s no wonder everything else falls apart & we keep seeing the same issues.

Sack GS right now, he obviously doesn’t know what he’s doing and has proved it over and over. Just let the players pick the team and tactics for the rest of the tournament. It can’t be any worse. They are obviously being constrained or bemused by Gone Southbrain’s choices and instructions.
If you’re afraid to do that at least ban him from giving any press conferences. He’s even more disillusioned than Ten Haag. I mean if the dilemma is truly missing Phillips, TAA is not the answer.

Talking about England playing like Germany is funny, given that I thought the reason for selecting Trent was to offer England the option of playing the 3-3-3-1 shape that Germany like to adopt when Kroos (pronounced like gross, not crews), with Trent starting as a wing-back. That leave Foden, Bellingham and Saka as the OM line, with Saka usually being the one pushing up and running behind and the other 2 providing movement. The wing-backs, particularly Trent, can then move into the spaces vacated to provide the necessary rotation. The other option that works for England would be to copy Spain and go for a 4-1-2-3. In that case, selecting Gordon on the left and using a midfield 3 of Rice, Bellingham and Foden (ie the suggested team from the video) gives more attacking options at the expense of a defensive player. Both of these seem reasonable. Having Foden, Bellingham and Trippier occupying the same space with almost identical heat maps is not.

I'm not a England fan, so that may possible why I'm not attached too certain players in certain positions based on where they have played their best football for their club team. But instead what I suggest by the following is getting the best out of the team as a whole, and as well be the most cohesive as you can be with the current squad and it's issues as of now. I would suggest the following: Guehi, Stones, Walker as CB's. Saka as a left WB, TAA right WB, Rice & Bellingham in midfield, Foden/Palmer on the RW, Gordon on the LW and Kane thru the middle. Foden/Palmer is able to both hold the width and cut inside, Gordon will be able to do the same, but also provide more of a threat in behind. Kane with that setup around him, will be able to drop deeper and create and spray passes and be the best version of himself. Also you have Saka on the overlap on the left, TAA in a position where he can overlap, underlap, get in the pockets he loves and spray passes and even go inside too the midfield to support Rice and Bellingham if needed. It's too late for something like this at this point in the turnament, but if Southgate had anything about him and truly wanted too get the most out of the squad he chosen, that for me would be it.

But if you look at all the media and fan lineups before the tournament started, the starting 11 against Serbia was actually pretty much what everyone had been asking for. I don’t think anyone anticipated it being so awkward in practice. And in fairness to Southgate, there were so many injuries and absences in the build up to the tournament that he had no opportunity to practice.

elsewhere, it was pointed out that Southgate was a defender... that is his first reflex, stay safe, calm down (84+ minutes, Gareth is calming his team! jack%ss). If James can rightly see all these failures, weaknesses and confusion, why can't Southgate and his dedicated staff? Palmer would've seen Foden or Saka; get Kane off, he doesn't/can't meet the demands of the needs of THIS team. Kane is such an intelligent passer, when the doesn't have to do much else, but his legs are not up to running much, or often.

Southgate is unbelievably tactically inept, football, and the players we are blessed with have moved on since Euro 2020 and the FA need to be open their eyes to this.
If the FA love Southgate that much.... which they obviously do... then put him in a director of football role within the England set up but we need to bring in a manager with vision and an acute understanding of modern football....... If we want an Englishman, go for an Eddie Howe, if we don't mind where he comes from, then go and get Jurgen Klopp. I'd be happy with either.

This team needs ripping up and stating again. Southgate has chosen players for two separate philosophies. You can't have players like foden, Kane, Bellingham dropping deep when Trent is obviously in to make those passes behind. And the fact that Southgate brings him off 15 minutes before players who actually get in behind and stretch a defence defies logic. The whole team has been poor across the two games and Ironically the player pundits (who obviously dont do their own research) are down on because hes replacing Maguire has been England's best player across the two games.
Southgate needs to change up his defensive structure. There were multiple moments when Trent was the only player in the midfield because Ruce had to drop into the back line to cover a run into the space vacated when Guehu was pulled out wide.
The idea of having a rest 442 defence is to have a good pressing structure on the defenders. But with a Lazy Kane and a Bellingham who only shows his "energy" offensively, it doesn't work. And when they do end up pressing, the two sole midfielders are too concered about the space 5 yards in front of our centre back to join the pressing structure. Either the whole team needs to press or get Bellingham to drop into the midfield defensively to make a 5 or 3.
Southgate has two options in the next match. Stick with the game plan of the last two games of knicking a goal and hoping to hold together the rest of the 90. Or he needs to change.
He can either drop Trent and either Foden or Bellingham, as apart from moments, all of them have been subpar, for Gallagher and Eze who will give energy defensively and can work well with 1-or-2 touch football.
Or he drops Bellingham deeper, creating a 433 and play Gordon, Watkins instead of Foden/Bellingham and Kane. To stretch the backline and to allow Trent to play the balls he's claerly put in the team to play.
I would also in both these scenarios play Gomez at left back, in the small cameos he made in the warm up games he made more supportive runs for his left winger and (dont fact check me on this) more passes with his left foot. Trippier seems allergic to using his left foot to even make a 6 yard pass. Gomez has experience playing at left back for Liverpool and can use his left foot for more than just standing on.

My take on this, is that Denmark played well and had England figured out. It is hard to control a game, when the opposition knows your left side is non existent.
MĂŠhle did very well as a right footed leftback 3 years ago, but Trippier hasnt got those attributes on the left flank. Foden should be CAM, he is not a left winger. That left side will cripple the english squad. Yes TAA hasnt got what it takes in the middle of the pitch, but he hasnt got the runs for his passes anyway.
My pick for the England starting 11:
    GK- Who cares
    RB- Walker
    CB- Stones
    CB- Guehi
    LB- TAA (Yes at left!!)
    CDM- Rice
    CM- Bellingham
    COM- Foden
    RW- Saka
    LW- Palmer
    ST- Kane
TAA at left!! Yes. When in position I would spread out the D in three with Walker right, Stones center and Guehi left. Some thing like this:
    GK- Who cares
    RCB- Walker
    CB- Stones
    LCB- Guehi
    CDM- TAA
    CM- Rice
    COM- Bellingham
    COM- Foden
    RW- Saka
    LW- Palmer
    ST- Kane
Walkers pace in offense is only needed in counter attacks really.
    What do you guys think?
