Great video. I have a trd sport bronze oxidized long bed. Do you have a A/c compressor noise. Like a cricket noise when the a/c is cycling. One thing I don’t like from the 4th gen Tacoma . Love the truck how it drives from my 3rd gen. Thanks

@@TRDJon sounds good. I’ve been on different forums and a lot of ppl are getting a chirping sound on first start up in the morning while the a/c is on. If a/c off we don’t get the loud chirping sound. It’s really annoying sound. Sound like crickets under the truck. Love what you done with your truck. And great honest reviews . Keep it up.

I do prefer a naturally aspirated V6 over a turbo 4 but I heard Nissan is switching to a 4 cylinder in the Frontier soon and so is the Ridgeline. Its the way of the future. Throwaway vehicles after 100K miles and better MPG is their goal.
The engine bay looks like a nightmare all hoses and wires. 3rd gen is so simple. I’ll take the bigger engine over the fancy electronics any day
I wouldn't want to own a 4th generation after 150-200K miles. I think its going to be a Maintenace nightmare money wise.

This comment is a bit harsh, but yeah I get what you’re saying. Jon does not pretend to be anything other than a huge fan of Toyota vehicles. It’s a Toyota enthusiast channel.
Other cons for me is
1. No full size spare tire
2. No sliding rear window
3. Thin plastic/felt skid plate
I had a 2024 Tacoma for 4 months before my wife told me I needed a bigger truck for our family, so I got a Tundra. But that little 4 banger just wanted to DRIVEEEEE, especially in sport mode. I was very impressed, especially after having one 2nd gen and two 3rd gen tacomas. Cant knock it til you try it. Even my non-hybrid Tundra likes to move in sport mode.
Now...does it sound the best? No haha. But it has a little growl to it and the turbo is fun! It runs great man. Like you said, peeps just have to drive them to really see

Giant screens that look like a tv bolted to a dash is one thing that kills me with many new vehicles. Just fugly.
Thanks for being honest, Jon. Please post another video with an update on the check engine light issue once you learn more. That is a surprising issue for a new Toyota. Hopefully they move quickly to address these issues. Your channel is invaluable for the consumer, as it forces Toyota to pay attention and fix the issues.

I wish Toyota would listen. Larger fuel tank is a must…low range especially once you have a small trailer on it…it’s a pain in the ass.
Everything you said was legit and I agree ! My biggest pet peeve with my 4th gen vs my 3rd gen is how long the transmission takes to change directions. Going from park to reverse to drive etc
hmmmm hopefully you don't have ann issue with yours. I haven't really noticed a big delay in mine.
I notice it a bit too, not always noticeable but sometimes it seems a bit too long. Inconsistent but is usually good.
Its not just the Tacoma but Ive noticed a lot of the newer 8+ speed transmissions change directions slower than the older 6 speeds did. I just assumed it was to keep people from going from reverse to drive while the vehicle is still moving backwards which is terrible for the transmission and creates more warranty work for the manufacturer.
I'm glad you mentioned the paint, it's really poor. I have the same color and the same issue. However, if you go on the lot and look at new ones that I'll call flat like underground, they are all as you indicated.
I'm glad you mention pricing and how so many people only look at the $65k TRD Pro pricing. Meanwhile, 99.9% of people don't need a TRD Pro or even a TRD Off Road.
But the same people who complain are more than happy to compare it to a low end half ton and say the top of the line mid sized trucks are too much 😂.
It's not just mid sized trucks that are too much. Everything has gone way up in price.
Exactly. People only see shiny object instead of taking a step back and looking at the whole thing. Ya it sucks how expensive these are, but still, you can get it for cheap if really desired.
I took mine off roading a few weeks ago on some good trails.. didn't need the rear locker once, but I did have MTS on, though not required... I know the sport doesn't have MTS.. but is a locker even available on the Sport?

@@astrogreenarrow It doesn't make sense to spend an extra $15k+ for a truck with capabilities they'll never use, in the hopes that it will hold its value by at least that much. It'll never hold it's value that well unless you buy it and never drive it. They might be the top spec, but they're not special since there's thousands of them being made.
You're better off buying a $50k truck (or even less) than a TRD Pro any day of the week and investing the difference. And even if you really do off road, you can get a lot of aftermarket gear for $15k+.

Same underground, with 6MT. Paint I agree. I did all the paint correction myself. I figured it was just the dealer getting their hands on it first. But interesting everyone has it. But after a lot of work, I also coated and is good to go now

Just got a trd off road after trading in my sti. Just got the 4x4, locking rear diff, and sway bar disconnect. freakin love this truck. Drives so nice, suspension feels great. Taking it on the trail Sunday to see how it does all oem.

I hate that big screen. When I go drive my truck I'm not going in there to watch a movie. It's too big and doesn't look Natural. It's like an afterthought where they just place a computer screen on top rather than being on the dashboard itself. The turbo engine sucks too!
I wasn’t a fan of the big screen until I drove my 2024 Tundra a bit. It’s great having the bigger screen. I can have the map, music, and directions all displayed and easily be able to glance over and see what I need. I was nervous about the turbo until I drove it. The twin turbo v6 on the Tundra is a beast. It tows a 10k lb trailer like it’s nothing. And it MOVES. The 0-60 time on the TTV6 is 5.9 seconds! I’ve owned sports cars that didn’t to as fast. Go test drive one. Your concerns are valid, but they melt away when you actually drive one.
@wesleybrehm9386 I like durable and reliable vehicles more than speed or power. So I'll take that old and slow V6 engine over those small turbo charged engines.
How long do you guys keep these trucks? Just long enough until your ''gee whiz'' crap catches the gremlins and you can no longer watch the view while crawling the malls? I know throw it away and get another! 😂
@corsair7531 My Tacoma has almost 200,000 miles in it and a 4runner with more than 250k. Both still run smooth and haven't given me headaches. So until then, I'm keeping them.
I have about 12k on mine and it’s been to AZ and back. It’s been a Beautiful ride
It's not about the torque numbers. It's about adding higher compression to the motor which adds stress to the motor, which damages the motor faster.
I think engineers may have thought about that too.
The TuRD is just the sour icing on the fail cake😂
Only reason i backed out of a trailhunter and got a 1794 hybrid limited was the backspace and for 15k more got a bigger truck.

Swirls in the paint on my 21 RAV4 off the truck. Dealer paid to have them removed.
I wish the screen was lower and integrated into the dash. They they have it now blocks visibility and looks like an afterthought.
Picking up my 2024 TRD OffRoad tomorrow. Can't wait to enjoy a new truck again. I remember the days of the 22RTE, which is still a sought-after engine for the nostalgic crowd, and that engine put out HALF the power of this new one.

I have an underground TRD Offroad and the paint a legit complaint, but it's weird because I get a ton of compliments on it. It's an awesome color. But the fuel tank is awful. It's been my only real complaint.

What kind of MPG are you getting and is it stock tires?
@@lancelotlink3907 I'm getting almost 21 MPG and drive about 50% in town vs interstate. But it's not the MPG. It's the size of the tank. It's a common complaint on these. I'm sure there is a decent reserve, but when your close to what it says is empty, it only refills about 16 gallons at the pump.

I really do like the new Tacoma. I drove a 2000 Tacoma TRD Off-road access cab 5-speed manual V6 for 20 years until I bought the Tundra I own today. Personally, like the new Tacoma's but could never justify the price. They cost more than what I paid for my TRD Pro double cab ($48,880). Bidenflation is real!
The last thing I felt your pain on that 18.5 gallon tank. One of my most favorite features about my Tundra is the 38 gallon tank. I get over 600 miles on a tank and it makes it so nice especially when I am towing long distances. Great video keep it up!

I was driving through a neighborhood at dusk the other day and saw a pair of headlights/fog lights coming toward me and I was like, "Tundra"...nope, got closer and it was a 4th gen Tacoma. They definitely look like Tundras sometimes.

I agree with your list of pros and cons. My underground also was delivered scratched AF, so my dealer has to correct and I had to pay to get it PPF’d and further PC’d. One thing you missed is that the paint thickness is very very low, like 1.1 mils (barely anything).
One correction is regarding the exhaust tip. It looks low because the rear bumper is a high clearance. It’s no lower than the previous gen.
My biggest gripe is the lack of the back seat space. I won’t upgrade to a Pro because of the new iso dynamic seats in an already tight back seat area.
I thought I said the pain is thin when I showed the rock chips.

People talk about pricing on these trucks are also not considering the price of the old ones. Used trucks are also ridiculously priced, I saw a 2020 TRD OR selling for 33k on the windshield, I wonder how many miles it has on it. I bought a new TRD OR for 36.5k back in 2018 without negotiating for price. I just priced a Nissan against your Tacoma and it's only a few thousand less with a lot less features/comforts/tech (and Nissan's inventory shows zero nationwide). Seems like a lot of hate but they're not considering the alternatives are just as bad.
The 2.4 hybrid in my Land Cruiser is a beast and WAY better and more fun to drive than the 3.5 v6 was. 3rd gen taco is such a dog albeit a reliable dog.

3rd gen motor is great after a proper tune. This will also help correct the mistuned/mismatched motor/trans
I had a 15 offroad 4x and I'll take my 3rd gen all day... but this is me saying this after the tune. Before it... the 3rd gen didn't know what it wanted to do.

Great feedback! Thank you for this great video! I"m still happy with my 2nd gen Tacoma, but I'm always curious about the new Tacomas. I tend to keey my Tacoma's for a long time. For the last 20 plus years, I only owned two Tacomas. I keep them until I'm away beyond 200k if not more 😊
Which one you prefer Tundra or Tacoma for long range and multi purpose drive combination of city and highway.

it is a westcott pre collar kit. About 2-3" up front and 1 in the rear.
I bought my 2024 Tacoma TRD-off road with the premium package back in April. I traded in a 2009 SR5 Tacoma. I love driving ,it, i love all the technology it came with. The more I drive it the more I like it. The 4 cylinder turbo is impressive. It will get up and go. I like you wish it had more padded areas for arm rests Unless something really back goes wrong I will probably drive it for years.
I love my TRD sport, just threw some 33’s on it, still on stock suspension but I’d eventually like to get the WD preload collar lift

Love my 24 Taco! It has been great. A different league than my 3rd gen. Unfortunately, have to wait and see if it delivers on longevity.

New Tacoma is going to be more than fine interms of reliability. Obviously haters will say nonsense
4 cylinder turbos work harder than naturally aspirated 6 cylinders but its a Toyota so if you keep up with the ALL the maintenance, I bet it gives you 200,000+ trouble free miles with light to medium usage. If it was a Ford or GM or Ram turbo 4 cylinder then I would sell before it hits 80,000 miles.

Never understood the big ass touch screens. I just have my phone mount in the center and it does everything . My radio is still buttons and i like that i can adjust it by feel and not having to look at the screen to change songs

Traded in my leased 22’ trd off road for a 24’ sr5. Had to since I was upside down and couldn’t go ahead and buy it out. Which it made since to trade it in. But I love the 3rd gen model it just looked like work truck which I do a lot of outside work around my property. I may end up trading in for an off road trim I like it better. But over all the 4th gen is growing on me a little. All I really needed was 4x4 function. It’s pretty good.
Paint is thin on it the door skins and fender skins thin as a dime.

OK, I will admit that I paused this as soon as it started, but my number one guess of what you hate about your new 50k Tacoma is that you did not use that money to by a used Land Cruiser.
41 seconds in. Tech is for dorks. It breaks. Rugged analog dependability is what you need in the middle of nowhere. Buy a freaking Defender if you want a bunch of ridiculous screens.

Great review. I love the color but am shocked Toyota would send out a truck with that low of paint quality. Sad for such a great company. I feel like I may be getting my first Tacoma later this year. Excited to begin my purchase and build. Your videos help me think through what I want to do and which one I will get. I will say I almost spit my coffee out as I was listening. Really, all new Toyota payloads are just absolute trash. They really screwed up with this one. I can get better payload in a mid sized canyon than Toyota's full size truck. The payload in there new Land Cruiser isn't much better than my rav4. Just really destroys the entire purpose of the vehicle in my opinion. If you can't load it up why buy. It's just a shiny toy.

5500 miles since March on mine and so far so good, but since it's the first year I'm expecting something to eventually go wrong. My biggest gripe was the price tag, but such is the market and when you're wanting a new model truck, you don't have much to leverage when negotiating. Most of my other gripes can be resolved with aftermarket parts--and I expect that to be the same with any manufacturer; they have to build a truck as cheap/reliable as possible cutting corners here and there. In the hot Texas sun, the interior plastic on the A pillar isn't so rigid; the rear bumper cover is a bit loose; the rear seat is too thick and doesn't fold away as well as a Honda Ridgeline; the rear sliding window is so small it's practically useless, and while having extra pockets on the door cards are nice.. they're not covered in any fabric, so any object you have in them causes them to vibrate and rattle.

I’ll co-sign his comment about a family. I had a Tacoma and traded it in for a 2024 Tundra Platinum. The 2024 Tundra is basically a 2024 Tacoma on steroids. Great for families. My biggest complaint is how cheap the finish is. I have tons of rock chips already, several of the plastic pieces have broken, and there’s a looming question of the recall.
Who in their right mind would spend 50k+ on a plastic drivetrain and such an anemic 4cylinder turbo.. Ill keep my Corolla Hybrid, but never a overpriced, fragile, and non efficient Toyota truck. i chose Denali Canyon for the same price 😂 you have luxury and have REAL power to play and tow with.

@TRDJon the 2.7L turbo GM offers, has more torque than the 6.4L HEMI V8 on the Ram 2500, and 3500.. who's the clown? Based on that first sentence it appears you are. end of story. Can't compare the 2.7 to the 2.4.. the hybridMAX is bringing more to the table but underpinnings are unlikely to hold up to that power.
The Tacoma has two offerings just like the GM product does. With 465 torque which is more. So it’s the same. Not sure where you’re going with this.
@TRDJon people are paying WELL over 50k for 318 ft/pound of torque and a plastic drivetrain. That's my point. At least get something with some ballz. Overpriced and underpowered junk.

Losts of issues with these. Crazy how companies can take a winning formula and just completely trash it for seemingly no reason.

Rocks are everywhere and just love to jump and give love to our vehicle's hoods. Think about some Paint Protection Film (PPP), you choice the one you like.
I’d be very curious to find out if you compare apples to apples the 5th Gen to the new 4Runner MPG and factor the premium fuel were it lands… same with the TACO no one ever mention’s the reg gas vs premium gas HP to HP.
The new Tacoma doesn’t require premium gas

I HATED the awful driving ergonomics and constantly hunting auto tranny in my 3rd Gen Tacoma. I’m so glad that Toyota addressed these two major issues.

My 2024 premium doesn’t have the hood insulation. Strange? I’m in Canada. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Don't get me wrong, I own a '17 TRD Sport V6 and I LOVE it but I would never buy a '24 Taco. I hate the design (inside & out) and a turbo engine that (on average) will last 150-200k tops where as the V6 can go past 300k without any problems.
These guys dont care how long it lasts. They will toss it and get another one. Leave the old, overpriced one to sit on the used lot.

I lied.. my 4 th gen does have the hood liner. My 2021 didn’t.
Im trying to convince my dad to buy a 5th gen 4Runner but he is not convinced on the gas and the interior. But what do you think I should tell him because it’s too iconic and very reliable and the dealers will definitely offer incentives when it reaches the time the 6th gen hits the lot
The 5th Gen is great! Tried and true! But old in its ways.
I highly doubt dealers will be offering incentives on the 5th gen.

I bought the 2024 tacoma TRD offroad and what a great truck until 4000 miles later the engine started knocking as i thought it was the engine but i got it towed to the dealership and they said they it was the transmission that took a dump …..now looking to buy a Frontier pro4x im sorry Tacoma you were great but not this year 😢
So why not wait for a new transmission from aisin to ship to toyota?

Just went looking at these a few days ago. Was considering a 4 door 6foot bed, white/black trim with dealer installed lift and tires. Loved the look of the truck and interior was very comfortable.... but my intent was to downsize from my Tundra, and honestly these things seem to have grown to nearly full size without the full benefits. I love the range I get in my Tundra, and The extra room for only a slightly larger truck is really nice, plus towing capability. Considering the price tag, and my rig is paid off and only 60k miles just couldn't justify it..... very nice trucks though and I actually think the 4cyl is a good powerplant, maintenance should be cheaper only having four cylinders etc. as long as the turbo system remains solid past 100k. time will tell.
More tech that will cost way more to fix when it fails.
I owned the last 2 generations of the Tacoma. But they lost me on this one. It is way too expensive and feels kind of cheap inside.
Jon: A/C Seats? No No NO!!! "Cooled seats". They just pull air from the bottom floor area and blow it into the seat via fans. There is NO A/C in the seats! Please do not use that terminology.

It's not about being a smaller motor , it's that a smaller engine with a turbo witll wear out quicker unless they over engineer it . But why not just turbo charge the v6 !!!! Pre 2015 like 09 to 2015 they had plenty of power 2016 they changed the engine and it sucked . I mean I'm worried I've seen alot of transmission issues with the new tacoma along with other issues . Have you had any tranny issues ?

Hey Jon, I agree completely on the 18.2 gallon tank. My FJ only has 19 gallons of storage and I stop a lot with that. Also, what the heck is hanging down below the rear bumper? Is that part of the hitch? If so, that'll look pretty rough after a few winters in a northern climate.......
Those soft material you are talking about just foams, scratch, piercing, scuff easily. I’d rather prefer hard plastic material.

Any vehicle over 30K should have soft touch materials on passenger areas (elbows, knees, reach areas).
