Actually this song is about someone in a relationship with someone who's battling a drug addiction, and coming to the conclusion that they can't take it anymore, so they walk away, asking the question who's going to take care of you when I'm gone.
Myles speaks of it on the bands myspace account.
Yeah, they missed the “who will you blame” and “watch you throw it all away” parts, but I can see why they made the connections they did.
@@benkyle76, absolutely it’s easy to mistake the meaning behind the song. If you place a piece of tape over those 2 phrases, the song has a total different undertone and it’s easy to gloss over when Myles punches you in the gut with the delivery of the lyrics in this song.

Hey all... I’m the guy that requested this reaction. Just want to chime in and clear some things up.... I was reluctant to request this cause I knew it would be misinterpreted. I tried to make it clear that I wasn’t dedicating the “song” but the “reaction” to a song I love. I absolutely know (and knew) this wasn’t a father/daughter song... well it actually could be but in a very unhealthy type way that doesn’t apply to my relationship with Gigi at all. But music hits us all in different ways and sometimes you find that “one thing” in a song or piece of music that you identify with. At the time of this request I was in the hospital with a heart issue... and I missed my daughters birthday. It just crushed me. I was in a pretty bad way and dealing with my mortality, so even though I knew this wasn’t something that actually fit my relationship with my daughter, I was hearing this song in more of a “inward” way. Questioning myself on “who will save you/watch over you when I’m gone” if that makes sense.
As parents, my wife and I both identified with those specific lines... just hit us like a ton of bricks and we LOVE the song because of that. Plus Myles is just killer and my favorite vocalist in my favorite guitar players band (Slash).
Also for what it’s worth... my wife and I are both born again Christians and believe that Jesus is very much in our lives and will be there for her when we are gone.
I still want to physically be there as a shoulder to cry on in tough times though

I absolutely love this song. Especially live. Hearing the crowd sing along gives me goosebumps. I've been fortunate enough to have seen Alter Bridge 4 times and they played this song every time. A great part of the set where the band leaves the stage and it's just Myles Kennedy with an acoustic guitar. Fucking beautiful.

As others have stated on here already, Myles absolutely has clarified this is about getting out of a relationship with an addict. If you listen to the words of the song start to finish it makes perfect sense
This song reminds me of my Grandfather. We lost him the week of my 30th birthday this year from heart failure. He looked out for my grandmother and helped her with her alzheimer's all these years, now we're watching over her now that he's gone.

Alter Bridge and Myles are so exeptional. It's like with Foo Fighters if Nirvana would still be a thing we wouldn't have Foo Fighters. If Creed would still be a thing we wouldn't have Alter Bridge. And this the thing with things ending and death and why it is important. Things need to end to give way for the new. If we all stick around forever everything will lose meaning and value. You will have more kids than you can remembers names when immortal. This life is everything because it is! And deep down we all know it.

The song is about a conversation that Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti had about religion and they each sing their own verses of the conversation. The Melody is this song is incredible and the 2 of them sound amazing together, not to mention myles incredible voice. Great song that garnered the highest praise both nights it was played. They ONLY 2times Alter Bridge has performed the song.
Simply one of the best songs there is. And this version is way more intimate than the studio version. Extremely powerful stuff.

Whenever I hear this it hurts soo much because of all the thing she did to my daughters all the lies and how she believed I would still be around with my love, after 10 suicide attempts she killed the love and still today she long for my voice not understanding what she lost choosing drugs over real love

Just found your channel and this is the second reaction I've seen. My son is in the grips of drug addiction. My wife and I are out of ideas and had to step back and wait for him to decide to change. This song reflects our struggle to reach him and our fears. Great song. Myles rocks.
I hope your son and the both of you are all doing well today. I am a recovering addict myself and I can tell you from personal experience and also from sponsoring other addicts that an addict will never stop using until they are ready. Each of us has our own pain tolerance and when the pain gets great enough we will stop if we are fortunate to live long enough. If you haven't done so already I would recommend a group called Nar Anon. They are mostly parents and significant others of addicts. They talk a lot about the "3 Cs" You didn't Cause it, You can't Control it and you sure as hell can't Cure it. I hope this helps

The meaning behind is actually not about death, but about knowing someone that will grow attached to a substance such as drugs and grow apart from you.
What an interesting choice of song for a dedication. This song is pretty sad and not uplifting in the slightest. Haha. Still, glad you're getting back to my favorite band in the world.
And now, for my usual suggestions:
Band: Demon Hunter
Song: Cross to Bear
Demon Hunter is my favorite Metal band and I think you need to revisit them, especially since you loved the last heavy song you did. This song is one of their most aggressive and I think the premise is quite interesting. The vocalist said it's about how people use the expression "it's my cross to bear" and that he hates how people use it so lightly without fully understanding the weight of it.
Band: Exodus
Song: Sealed With a Fist
It's about domestic abuse and it's my personal favorite by them. It's got groove and the lyrics are cleverly written. It always puts a smile on my face because it has a happy ending of sorts.
Band: Lamb of God
Song: Embers
This one, based on my understanding, is about the loss of a newborn. I read an article that had a statement from the guitarist saying it was about his daughter. It's beautiful, tragic, and hopeful at the same time.
Band: Iced Earth
Song: Damien
It's about, well, the son of the Devil. Horror Show was an album about different horror icons and legends like Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, and Damien. This song is particularly memorable because of its opening bass line, the choir that sings, the crushing riffs, and the "colorful" words against Christ used in Damien's perspective. It's an epic song and I'm morbidly curious to see the looks on your faces after hearing certain lines.

This. 👆 Modern day masterpiece. It deals with the loss of a close friend of Myles. His guitar teacher when he was younger. He died of cancer. It is a beautiful expression of respect and loss and hope. The guitar solo, two guitars, starts with Myles and ends with Mark Tremonti, it is literally what emotion sounds like. The entire song is absolutely brilliantly done, start to finish. PLEASE check it out!!!!
