And the guy strapped to the chair died differently, and seeing eye dogs wouldn't work because the dog would go crazy too, Tom looked different, he had a dog, they go out either more than once or there's a bit where Mallory and the dog are alone, they changed a lot from the book tbh
this movie hurts because you can tell she loves the kids so much, she just wants them to be safe. she was already so scared of being a mother and it doesnt help that this apocalyptic shit began happening. she calls them boy and girl because she didnt want to get attached knowing that everyone she got attached to ended up dead, but when she tells them that one has to look, she realized that she couldn't go through with it because she loved them both. she wouldve rather they all die instead of lose either one of them and as selfish as that may seem, she just couldn't lose anyone else.
I always thought that she never gave them names cus she was so focused on keeping everyone alive rather family stuff, just like how they don't call her mom but by her actual name. It's straightforward

hm except the books weren't at all like that, so that doesn't make sense. The creatures were physical things without leaves rustling or anything when they approached.
I would assume the leaves weren't really the monster, but how the narrator was revealing it to us, since that's all they hear before looking and losing their minds
