  • Salamanders are cool. There's no way around it! As close to 'nice' Marines as you can get, stalwart heroes, and unyielding in both attack and defense... what's not to love about these guys? Luckily, painting an army of them can be pretty quick and simple!

    Vallejo Black grey is a godsend. True pitch black isn’t really common in real life, and Vallejo Black Grey in conjunction with a wash can help you get an easy black that looks more natural and realistic.

    I think this is my favourite method of painting Salamanders so far. I only recently bought some Heavy Intercessors two weeks ago, the first 40k minis I've purchased in almost 20 years since high school, and I think this is what I'm aiming for, though i will be trying to paint sub-assemblies because I absolutely do not have the fine motor controls to paint behind the gun to hit the aquila on the chest.

    With marine juice and Ultramarines, would it make sense to start with a lighter blue than Macragge and use the all over wash to darken it down into something closer to Macragge? I’m thinking of replicating this approach with Caledor Sky for instance to get closer to a traditional violet blue using the red hues from the wash.

    • @bluedotdinosaur
      @bluedotdinosaur Před 11 měsíci +1

      This is actually a common trick. For example I've tried base of Calgar Blue and a overall wash of Drakenhof Nightshade cut with some Lahmian Medium. The final result ends up extremely close to Macragge. I've also done it as: a very heavy dry brush / stipple of Calgar over Macragge ("artis opus" style technique) then the Drakenhof+Lahmian mixture. This also worked great. The mid-tone level Calgar was darkened pretty organically down to Macragge where it needed to be.

    I’m wondering if there is a thinned down contrast paint that you could use as an alternative to ‘marine juice’ TM. Thinking Gharaghak’s Sewer - rapidly becoming my favourite paint btw.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 11 měsíci

  • @ochoaE3
    @ochoaE3 Před 11 měsíci

    Awesome stuff. I always enjoy seeing others take on Salamanders. As easy as you made this look, I still think like it'd take me some time to get to the end result.
    Also, of all painters on CZcams I see, I think you're the only one who hasn't adopted the new dry brush technique from the people at Artis Opus.
    Is that because you've gotten your drybrushing really down you see no need to try it?

  • @MrSphinchee
    @MrSphinchee Před 11 měsíci +1

    I've noticed you use marine juice a good bit now and agrax earthshade a lot less. Why's that?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 11 měsíci +1

      The simplest answer is they're different colours, and the juice doesn't tint most miniatures as strongly as Agrax will. I also don't especially like the new Agrax recipe and how it flows; it clings a lot more heavily over flat areas and tints the colours far darker than the old stuff did, so out comes the medium. 😅

    • @MrSphinchee
      @MrSphinchee Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio that's a pretty good reason. I understand the not wanting to tint the color. That's why I've resorted to recess shading. It's super tedious. I'm going to have to give your marine juice a go.

    Army Painter strikes again. I wish they would reformulate their spray paints to stop the orange peel. Some will say its the heat or humidity that does it but I've had their primer ruin models in 3 different countries with 4 wildly different climates. Shame because some of the color choices are excellent.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 11 měsíci

      I'm not seeing how this one's 'ruined.' The drybrushing almost certainly brings out more of the texture than is usually visible at all.
