This is the FIRST version of Scratch, and today the challenge is to create a Video game inside of it. I have severe limitations, no custom blocks, no vector, no clone, but I'll still finish my Flappy Bird Game in less than 10 minutes.

As someone who used to use this version of scratch, not being able to clone was a nightmare.

At this time the scratch didn’t even develop clones or vector mode yet, very different
In 1.4 instead of there being predefined fonts the fonts are just what are on your computer. Windows doesn't allow websites to access the fonts folder so they had to create their own fonts when moving online. (I know they could just use fonts from Google Fonts like Pixlr does but that would sort of contradict their own rules)
Websites can "technically" access the fonts on the user's computer (fonts that aren't custom instead use a font that is installed), but I don't think they can list them,

They still could've done at least a few more fonts
1.4 was the version I started with back in 2011. It's easy to take features from later versions for granted when you're so used to them, but when you know the tools at your disposal you can still do a lot with this.

@@lloydmartel sure but my analogy is still correct ad this is the first version. It's obvious that there will be upgrades and changes to it, so calling it a newborn child is really what scratch version 1 is because it's the first version.
True I mean in your comparison, when you say that’s like calling a newborn child a failure because it couldn’t do calculus yet to the person who Would call a newborn child a failure that would just be plain stupid I mean that thing is literally a child that just came out of its mother’s 🍑 and it literally knows nothing about the world yet and yet someone just called it failure because it couldn’t do their homework
@@timecubed your analogy suggests that scratch 1 is a failure, it isn't, it's still got the tools and resources to make things. It's just that it's the worst version.

closest thing they have is the block shape simulation, and that is just barely calling it so
@@ecoa there is a way to make it look like 1.x, but it feels nothing like 2.0 or 1.x.
In my opinion, the best thing about this version is that can go over variables. I really wish they kept that lol

@@txaianapm8378 i think they mean that you can hover sprites over the variables instead of the variable covering the sprite.

I have Scratch 1.4 and there is a removed block in Control. The removed block is called "Forever If". [Note]: I downloaded Scratch 1.4 a few months ago like 3 or 4.
"forever if " was removed not only because it would be confusing for new users of Scratch, but also because it has an extremely simple workaround: "forever / if "

Fun fact: A project that has a forever if block in it when upgraded to scratch 2.0 or 3.0, turns into a forever with an if inside.

this was not the "first version of scratch". but it was where I got my start in 2012. I made games on it for years before these newfangled "custom blocks" and "cloning" stuffs were added.
My only experiences with scratch were back when it first came out and this was the only version and I didn't realize it had grown so much

I dont know if you forgot or something, but scratch 3.0 actually does have tutorials. You go to the ideas page, and then you can pick a tutorial, and it opens up a new project so you can make it. You can even add extra things on your own, like different movement, your own sprites, etc. :)

1.4 is not the first version _at all;_ publically released versions down to 1.0 exist, and if you count betas there are versions from February 14th 2004 and October 11th 2003 (alongside others) that can be found on the internet (that also differ from released 1.x versions' interfaces a lot).
