  • LNER A3 class 60103 Flying Scotsman was the motive power for todays railtour named The Flying Scotsman from Carnforth to Carlisle and return seen running head on into Storm Arwen near Shap Summit with thirteen on and 47815 coughing at the rear, the railtour originated out of Manchester Victoria and was due to travel the Settle Carlisle line but due to the line being closed it was diverted over Shap, most roads around Kendal were blocked today with fallen trees so we had a bit of a challenge trying to get going but we managed, thanks to Steve for the company and crack today and thanks for watching and feel free to subscribe if you'd like to see more.

      As a school boy I lived in Barnet N. London. On the week ends I would go into work with my dad, he was supintendent for a tunneling company constructing tunnels on the Kings Cross to Scotland main line to enable four track running. Between Hadley Wood and Potters Bar.
      Steam trains arrive at Kings Cross would disconnet from the carriages and fresh one would connect at the other end ready for the return journey. The old locomotive would then act as the pusher for the standing start out of KC. The pusher would ease off at Hadley Woods and return to the KC steam yard. All very dramatic for a 12 year old.
      Thanks for braving the weather for those great shots of The Flying Scotsman. You should now get away for a dram to warm up

    • @WashingtonSAFC
      @WashingtonSAFC Před 2 lety +4

      @@johnriggs4929 when I posted it, I meant to put a smiling face after the diesel part of the comment. But forgot to add it. Which sort of spoiled the meaning of why I had added it (which was sort of 'what a pity the diesel had to be there'), if you follow me (which I'm sure you do, because you are thinking the same as me). But what a video it is, though.

    Thank you so much for an extraordinary trip down 'memory lane' . I was born in 1951 ( Robbie Burn's day ) and I have vivid memories of travelling with my dear father . From Dumfries , through to York , I believe , and others such as Oxford where my mum's family were . I remember 'urging' ( the infamous rocking back-and-forth ! ) our Austin A-70 up Beattock and Shap . Getting stuck in snow drifts and having the welcome help of some Army lads in a 'Big Bedford' . Then were was the treat ! Driving virtually parallel with the railway and waving to the Engine Drivers for what seemed miles . Aaah . I think I'll sleep well tonight . Thank you very much indeed . I feel quite indebted to you and your team . Stay safe . Kind regards . Pete .

    Brilliant little film, Nige. thanks to you and Steve for braving the chill factor. I was fortunate enough to be on that train and we were really quite surprised that we set off from Bolton only 40 minutes late with all scheduled services being cancelled at that time. The re-routing via the West Coast main line made up for missing the Ribblehead viaduct because we were able to see the stunning, snow-covered scenery in daylight - PS I shared this on my Facebook page and it has received many fine compliments for the quality of the film, and the tense build-up waiting for the train to appear

    I’m absolutely amazed that a steam driven train is still in every day usage. It just points out the difference between the US and UK. We’ve had at least 2 premier steam trains, the S1and T1 used primarily on the Pennsylvania Railroad. They were notably record breakers for speed. But, they were scraped long ago.
