My favourite story about backwards masking was someone trying to take Judas Priest to court for having subliminal messages telling people to kill themselves. Rob Halford basically ended the case by saying "If we were gonna put subliminal messages in our music, it would be to make people buy more of our records."
The parents of the kids tried to accuse them of having the line "do it, DO it, DO IT!!" in the cover song off of Stained Class...

I've reversed a lot of my own audio and the original clip in the song does sound reversed, which was revolutionary for its time. That being said, i think it is definitely real, Lennon was known for being pretty experimental. Now as for the context of what he was saying? Who knows, maybe he was referring to Paul changing from the person he used to be, "Paul is a dead man (or maybe is was just saying "Paul is dead man", which would make more sense), miss him, miss him, miss him...". But who knows. That's for the members of the Beatles to know and us to ponder.
