Having watched the channel long enough I've managed to calibrate myself to what Dan says and it usually works out. Not that I always agree with him but strangely enough I can now tell if I'll like a movie no matter what he says about it because Dan is always good about being direct about his personal preferences. It's why I keep coming back after other channels fall by the wayside.

That's what a good critic actually should do. Not have the same opinion as you but inform you about what a movie/show (or whatever) is like so you can make a decision if you want to spend your limited time and money on something.
I too don't always agree with Dan but I absolutely appreciate his professional criticism.

I’m probably in the same boat as you. My favorite episodes were when Jen learned and grew as a character. Felt like the writers room pulled the rug out and made it about Writers Room Vs. internet instead of Jen Vs. her obstacles. I actually cared about Jen finishing her arc, and I didn’t get that.

I would have liked to see them do more with the rest of the episode after the K.E.V.I.N scene, and do more to fulfill the change of approach that Jen inspired. I suspect they may be thinking about that more as a promise for season 2, rather than a promise for the rest of this episode or season... but still, it would have been nice to see more in the rest of this episode to give us confidence that they actually understand the promise they've made here, and that they actually do intend to follow through on it. As it is, it feels like it MAY have been a hollow gimmick that they'll quickly forget about, but... hopefully not. If it DOES actually signal a shift in the MCU towards more story/character-based emotional climaxes rather than just spectacle-based action climaxes, that'd make this a really significant sequence for the MCU overall. But yeah, if they don't really follow through on it, then it'll just seem like hollow lampshading.

I totally agree, Andor, She-Hulk, Obi-Wan, etc. might be better presented as several feature length tv movies; like the network produced "movie of the week" from the old days of TV broadcasting. Werewolf By Night could probably be a proof of concept for this. To potentially solve pace and/or tone issues there would be individual shorter features with a cohesive independent theme that belong to a larger anthology title like She-Hulk or Andor, yet still ultimately contribute to a larger story arc. Currently it seems like D+ is taking movie concepts and stretching them into episodic TV shows; some of the pacing, and sometimes tone, is lost in the translation.

Dan hits it on the nail. I really enjoyed the fourth wall breaking through the season but the finale had the laziest use of it. Sure the meta commentary is very clever but you can't use meta commentary to completely whisk away the conflict and tension that you spent weeks building up without a satisfying payoff. That's like Deadpool going "meh, none of this is real what's the point" half way through the film and then cut to credits.

The end was weird, even by She-Hulk comic standards I feel. Though it was very much a She-Hulk thing. The series as a whole didn't really do it for me. I liked the cameos (loved Daredevil, though given we have a long, rich history with him it was to be expected) but liked the moments we dive into Jen's personality and emotional standing much more.
The humour wasn't really my speed, but thats okay comedy is subjective. I DO love how they've changed Abomination, he's fantastic as the reformed monster. Though I don't know if the show did enough for me personally to get a second season.
I guess Harvey Birdman spoiled me for great lawyer comedy. That's still the benchmark.

I'm actually really mad about the ending. The fourth wall breaks were fun and all, but I feel like this did a huge disservice to people who have experienced revenge porn or doxxing. I was already kind of upset that there was no trigger warning for episode 8. It felt almost exploitative because it is not the type of plot line you'd expect in a marvel show, so you aren't prepared for it at all. It was like they did it just for the impact and not to actually deal with such a sensitive topic. I'd already been worried they left it too late to be dealt with properly in the final episode, but I guess expecting them to even deal with it at all was generous of me. They literally just used SA, which was the most shocking thing they could think of, as a plot device to get Jen in jail for absolutely no reason because they undid it all within a few minutes anyway.

Seemed like there was going to be a clear tone initially set up with having Jen tackle a different court case each week defending low level, oddball heroes and villains ala Dan Slott's run in the comics. They could have held to this theme while also throwing in the fourth wall breaks and digs at toxic internet trolls. That could have built to a very satisfying finale where Jen learns to embrace her She-Hulk persona both in and out of the courtroom while also feeling comfortable as "Just Jen" Walters. It could have been cool to see all those corny, C-list characters come together in the finale as her supporting cast. Intelligencia seemed random for such a major role in the finale. There was definitely some cool stuff throughout but it's too bad we didn't get this smaller, Dan Slott-themed tone for Season 1 because, now that she's in the MCU, future seasons will probably be more and more about her interacting with the Avengers and other A-listers in bigger storylines.

I understand your frustration with the show, I also had some reservations in the beginning of the show.
However the more I watched the more I realized what they are going for the show and was able to appreciate it for what it is and for the greater MCU in general.
This show I believe is first and foremost a comedy. So I believe that the people at Marvel wanted to focus on that above all else. So if the story has to suffer some for the sake of comedy I'm willing to change my perception of that and enjoy the show. At least in a comedy show it makes sense to focus more on the jokes and not so much on the over arching storyline because how often does a sitcom payoff a setup earlier in the season.
If it was a greater show I believe it could have been able to wrap up storyline and character plots, but for what I viewed as a sitcom I was pretty happy for the season finale we got because I believe this is exactly how the character She-Hulk would resolve an issue like this.

i really like the character of She-hulk and was looking fwd to this and was really let down, there was really no character growth, chaotic plot"s" that dont go anywhere, jokes that just felt flat. reason why most people like daredevil in it is because we invested in him as they did the work with him he has character growth and depth, with jen we got very little. some of the acting was great and some was horrendous but the writing honestly i thought was all bad. its almost like the writers knew who they wanted the villain's to be trolls in the show so they purposely made the show mediocre at best so that there would be more trolls to make the villans more "meta" . hulks son reveal should of been a huge thing and its played off as a gag. the characters they got for jen her assistance and the guy were great actors just the writing was so bad which sucks cause this could of been a great show.

Dan, out of all the critics of this show I have watched on CZcams, you are the only one who agrees with me that the retro-intro and the 4th wall break ending were the best parts of this episode. I also agree with most of the points you make about lack of character development, dropping plot points, etc.. But, overall, I think the biggest problem with this show is it's not funny. I mean, I agree about Blazing Saddles -- way back then I felt the ending was a bit of a letdown, but we all forgave them because of the hilarious ride we had had with the movie up to that point. She Hulk tries to be clever and funny, but just fails so much at it. That said, I like the character Jen, her alter ego SH, and I hope it gets a second season -- with much better writing.

The point, I think, is that people who work in the industry are...people. You can be rich and attractive and still not quite understand yourself. You can doubt yourself and question the 'superhero' that you appear to be but still do good.

Fantastic, balanced analysis. I honestly don't understand how anyone can misinterpret Dan's criticisms as being the same as those who have a clear bias. I can only assume they judge his opinion based on his expression in the thumbnail and make up their own reasons.
Apart from two episodes I enjoyed this show more than anything else Marvel have released this year, but even throughout I was definitely picking up on issues. They have a clear opportunity to make this season better by addressing its issues in season 2, IF The Mouse lets them. Skaar's reveal really frustrated me, because it was so fleeting and unnecessary that they could've left it out entirely, rather than conform to the "need" to set up the next thing.
And absolutely, Marvel Studios can't call themselves out and pretend like they're in on the joke of Marvel tropes and do nothing about it. (Although I loved how K.E.V.I.N.'s lens had a sun shield that looked like a baseball cap.)

They set up multiple villains, but none of them had any impact or any threat, because they all got so little screentime. None of the storylines went anywhere. They finally set up some real stakes in the penultimate episode, only to simply discard it all with a simple "oh everything is fixed now". The finale was basically Marvel saying "we made a bad show on purpose for the lols, but if you dare to critisise, you're a troll". It's weird Dan... I actually don't think the "storyline" really matters with she hulk. Much like it doesn't really matter with dead pool. I think it's ultimately about how you feel about Jen. Just like it's how you feel about wade. And that guides the project. It's great to get invested in the story, but for both characters we should now know better. coming in that's ok to not have that expectation, but now they have given that to us. I think the writers want that from us. Not that they don't care about the story, but I think when taking on a character like she hulk...understanding her place in the comics and what truly makes her special... this route is much more... rewarding for me. but yeah if that's not your jam and you need a lot of structure, then that's ok. Just from now on don't expect that from Deadpool or She hulk.

The marvel jokes at the end did almost seem like the creators couldn't figure out a good climax to the whole story and pulled a get out of jail free card from a "break glass in case of emergency" box on the marvel studio wall. Luckily, despite all that, I could turn my brain off long enough through the show to get some laughs and had a good time watching it. 👍

TLDR; I really appreciate Dan's points and point of view, but personally I like longer, less focused TV shows and loved the show.
    Long version:
While I don't disagree with Dan's analysis, I have found that my personal taste doesn't fit with his take on She-Hulk. Which isn't surprising :) Everyone is different after all.
I really like the stretched season length of the show. Having episodes and plotlines that don't cleanly or perfectly fit into a nice whole with the other parts of the season works great for me. That's probably not the case for others. It makes me feel some characters have more depth and gives more room for humor and/or drama. For example I loved how Emil filled out in his own way over the whole season and I don't think he would have in a "clean 6 episodes". Give me more, I love it! Having more focus in a movie makes sense to me, but as a child of the 70s-80s and enjoying 20+ episode seasons of TV I love having a cast of characters meander through 3-6 months of a single season to have a show to talk with friends about for longer than 6 weeks.
Thoroughly enjoyed hearing Dan's take and analysis, gave me another angle on the show even though we don't see eye to eye :)

Coming out of Hawkeye & Ms Marvel, i was worried about She Hulk. Marvel its been having this trend to do not so well written stories that felt they were simple stepping stones for the next thing. I was excited to see Tatiana again, loved Orphan Black, and despite not knowing much about She Hulk, i was excited to see what they do with her. Just as Dan said, they stretched the season beyond what the story could hold. just like the back end of the Marvel Netflix shows it felt like 2 different seasons. The passing was awful, i had to wait to binge it in order to be able to enjoy it. Yes i hated the post credit scene with that stallion woman. I kinda loved Wong and her new gf. And, although the finale could have been awesome, it simply wasnt because it was a literal Deus ex Machina. Just, for a second, analice this: Jen tell KEVIN that she was badly surprised by Hulk falling from the sky to help her... and yet, they then have Daredevil do the same thing. Also, the show establishes further the miss use of the Hulk. So far the MCU has been very discriminatory towards the Hulk, but now, Jen is as well. She has her cousin who had a harder path than hers, who knows exactly what he is capable of doing it she looses control and she completely dismisses him. But then, just because she likes Matt she accepts his advice which was the same as Bruce´s! It wasnt a bad first season but it fells like a missed oportunity. and, oh, yeah... the cgi was terrible!

  • @LizardSpork
    @LizardSpork Před rokem +1

SheHulk is a show that's more concerned about airing grievances and being edgy and meta than establishing characters or setting up story arcs or exploring complex narratives. Case in point - none of the side characters aside from cameos have lives or agency of their own other than to either support or antagonise Jen, they either love Jen unconditionally or hate her with the fire of 1000 suns. Now the writers can say that was meta commentary to reflect modern fandom but stooping down to the level of the people you detract doesn't make you clever, it makes you a hypocrite, kinda like how Jen's constant whining about male privilege and unfairness at work while the fact that she got the dream job over better and more experienced lawyers at the firm simply because she got superpowers completely went over her (and the show's) head.
As a comedy, this show is desperately unfunny, I don't think there's a single moment the fans can remember in a years time they can recount. As a legal drama, this show is un-clever, none of the cases involved more than 2 scenes of courtroom drama. As a character exploration, this show has one dimensional characters that are caricature. As part of the MCU, it relied so heavily on cameos of better, more established characters to prop up its own failing narrative and inject some excitement.
I'm convinced this show was made by people who neither know nor care for SheHulk, but saw her as a convenient vehicle to start a war with "toxic fandom" by deliberately taunting them to elicit a response so the writers can belittle them from the gilded soapbox of a billion dollar franchise, thus becoming the very thing the "toxic" fans accuses them of being.

I really enjoyed the metaness between Jen and KEVIN and was looking forward to a different ending, but then once the sequence was done the ending just fell flat. It ended up feeling like the writers were stalling to come up with an interesting ending but then stalled too long and didn't formulate anything.
This finale should have been at least an hour long to end the threads properly.

Dan, it would be helpful to some of us if you gave a brief non-spoiler section in these reviews, especially a "it got better" or "it got worse" at the very beginning of these posts. There have been a number of series like this one where I stopped watching at some point either because I was a bit busy or the episodes I had watched had not really grabbed my interest. Sometimes a "it got better" or "there are a couple of really good episodes" is enough to get me to start watching again. Otherwise, I tend to watch full spoiler videos and learn the interesting twists.
    Thanks.
ps. Roger Ebert was indeed the main critic I payed attention to for several decades. Over time, I learned how his views compared to my own, so I learned to tell when I might like a movie he reviewed, even though it did not appeal to him. I am now trying to do the same with your reviews. I fully understand that you sometimes need to explain why you do not particularly enjoy a movie based on structure or plot rather than it just having a strong female, minority, LGBTQ, etc, character in it. It is sad that you need to need to do so, but I understand that it is important.

Honestly, the forth wall breaking is problematic for me. It’s like they either didn’t go far enough or should have not bothered. I feel the big reveal in the final episode should have happened in the 8th episode and then the final episode is kind of a revised version. That was its narratively satisfying and you also get the fun reveal. As it is it feels like the writers get out of jail free card for basically having no story. I don’t know I’m very mixed on this show, I’ve always liked She Hulk as a character but I don’t think this does it for me overall. And while I understand the meta context of complaining about internet trolls I don’t feel it translates in the same way in the story as I think the trolls arguments would be different in the MCU world compared to ours. (Also I think Todd should have just died after injecting himself, frankly would have been funnier and make more sense from what Bruce set up at the start of the show)
