When a Frenchman introduced me to “Keeping Up Appearances” and showed me how British folks were literally the ONLY ones who could have a show like this and have it be successful… I was sold on their sense of humor and how much it’s given to the world. We owe so much to British humor and overall sensitivity. They are the genesis of all of the First World!
I grew up in rural south Georgia (USA) and there was a woman in the small town who was the Southern version of Hyacinth Buck...er, ah, Bouquet. It didn't help matters that she lived in an antebellum plantation house that had been in her husband's family for generations. She was not prone to dear Hyacinth faux pas, but within 5 minutes in her company, one knew she considered herself a grand lady and, by rights, must be obeyed (all conveyed with the utmost gentility, of course). I still have flashbacks to the year she directed the Christmas pageant😊.
That is an exaggeration. There is humour in every culture. The reason you don't know and find British humour unique is because you don't know other cultures' languages.

@@lmrharper3586 I have no idea what is supposed to be funny? "Keeping Up Appearances"? Yes, it is supposed to be and it is extremely funny. I really enjoy this show, the writing is fantastic, the acting is even more fantastic. But, to say that the British "were literally the ONLY ones who could have a show like this and have it be successful" is an exaggeration. There are plenty of other shows from other parts of the world that are extremely funny and humorous. I am not sure how I "have single handedly just proved" what?

@@moj1338 Where are you from? Almost all the actors in this video are comedians making fun of the stereotypical English . I also love Keeping up Appearances and I love the all English comedy shows.
The absolute best part of Christmas for me as a child living in Sevenoaks, Kent was carol singing with my friend Joanna on the richest street which was 2 miles long. One night, maybe two, up one side and down the other. I think we had 10 or so songs in our repertoire. I still know the words to several old English carols. We made a ton of money, maybe 4 or 5 pounds! Our parents made us donate half to Charity, I think it was the RSPCA. The rest was ours. So much fun for nine and seven year-old girls. It seems so bizarre to me today.
OMG….I am a Canadian & I just LOVE the British…their traditions ( that they hate but continue to do because of their beautiful, exquisite, loveable CIVILITY. GOD BLESS & KEEP THEM THE SAME FOREVER. They are the touchstone of the way of life I want to live….

Born in Canada to an English mum … my mum brought these traditions to her new country. Our Christmas was very different to our friends who have Canadian born parents. Mince tarts, bread sauce, Father Christmas (we sounded ridiculous when everyone else called him Santa Claus), Christmas cake (yuck)….now that my parents are gone, my sibs and I have embraced these traditions.

What I find funny is that a goose or a duck roast would actually be the more traditional choice of bird than the turkey, which is a new world bird, and was used by the settlers as a substitute for goose

A Canadian (and particularly Newfoundland & Labrador) version of this show would almost literally be the opposite of almost everything! (Except maybe the saying "sorry" part. LOL) We nod and wink and say "Merry Christmas" to everyone and are literally known for mummering, where disguised visitors are welcome in for a drink and piece of cake during the 12 days. We also created a celebratory event on Dec. 23rd, known as Tibb's Eve, particularly for people to have their night of celebratory drinking, which would then be done, so that one can be more respectable during the family-centred Christmas activities. It's like we took some of the best bits of the UK Christmas and tweeked them to get rid of the guilt and negativity and make them our own. So different! lol
"Happy Holidays" isn't solely to be inclusive of those who don't celebrate Christmas. Since there are so many holidays celebrated between late November and early January, it's simpler to have one greeting you can use for the whole season.
Harecore Christmas enthusiasts don't seem to give a rip about other holidays, including New Year's, which they presumably also celebrate. 😂

I left Scotland in 1969 and up to that point hadn’t paid much attention to the Queen’s speech on Christmas Day even though my mother watched it religiously. Living in Canada from then on I would watch it and encourage my children to do so. We all stood. Guilt maybe?
There were always what my dad termed "Jaded Gifts." It would be some random re-gift, or something from the charity shop.
If those good Baptists had known they were turning me into a lifelong theater kid by casting me as the archangel in the Nativity play when I was six, they'd have made me the understudy for the back half of the donkey instead.

My Gran's family was from Scotland and she grew up with these traditions in Canada. Both My father and mother had these Christmas routines too. The foods, mince tarts and the plum pudding were a staple at Christmas. The family visits were eye rolling as well.
We in the U.S. also talk about the journey (we'd say trip) upon arrival: flight, drive, weather, traffic, and if driving, the route you took. It always ends up that you should have taken the route that someone says you should have taken, GPS or no GPS. That route is probably just as bad, but it makes them feel that they knew better than you. And that's OK, because... it's Christmas. (However we do the same thing on Thanksgiving and every other holiday.)

After many decades, I have realized the strongest and most wide spread Christmas traditions are stressing over every detail and then complaining about Christmas. Growing up on a farm, family Christmas were fairly low key. My father's second wife "DID" Christmas, complete with Chtistmas Eve open house; bingo was played and participation was mandatory. Forty years later and I still have the occassional PTSD flashbac from being sent to the store for the "correct" whipped cream.

I'm American. My mum's dad immigrated from England, my dad's grandad immigrated from Wales. It's incredible just how many of these very British problems are still evident in my generation of my family and beyond 😅
Loved it, yep, that's Christmas here as well, although we're in the middle of a 40C day at Christmas. When I feel I want to leave, I just get up and say, well I'm going home now, thank you for the wonderful lunch. 🙃🇦🇺

Being a Kiwi I'm glad the Poms got here first - imagine if the french or Dutch or, god forbid the Spanish colonized us - the Maori wouldve been enslaved and we'd all be speaking romance - nah, Poms have the best sense of humour....
Our group went carolling one Christmas, just to sing, and we were well received for quite a while, but one place we went, no one opened a window or door…dead silence! The next day we realized we had been singing Christmas carols at a Jewish Old Folks home….sorry…no offence was meant…we hope none was taken.
I knew what my ex-British very younger cousins were asking for so much better than he did. They wanted to have sauce with their chips and he had no idea what they wanted. I had to explain to him they wanted ketchup with french fries. I have never even been to the UK, Both my ex and I live in Canada and yet I knew more British customs and how they said things than he did.

The title of this video is grammatically correct. "Dos" and "Don'ts" are the correct plural form of the words "Do" and "Don't". "Don't" is a contraction of "Do not" - the apostrophe essentially indicates the missing "o". Apostrophes before an "s" at the end of words indicate possession, so to insert an apostrophe before an "s" to indicate a plural is incorrect (e.g. common errors of this type include "the 1990's", "DVD's") . Yes, you may call me the pendant's pedant! 🤣🤣

The whole “these are just our issues” thing is a joke right? Cause the vast majority of it is relatable to this American. Of course, I would trade my citizenship in for a gorgeous listed estate of some sort somewhere near London (provided I have the income for upkeep and the ideal lifestyle) in a heartbeat. It’s one of my life goals to move there eventually, for many reasons, so it’s hard to sum it all up, but I’ve always felt I’d be more comfortable there. BTW, James Cordon clearly hasn’t been drinking with the Americans in my part of the country - we’re certainly not all your typical snob from Los Angeles (not that all people from L.A. are snobs, many are “unhoused” for instance, and some are in-between those extremes, but obviously James only knows the snobs, of which there are plenty). Anyhoo… lost my train of thought, um, Merry Christmas and/or good luck getting through another December!
