When I moved to the UK, I met people and even visited their homes (parents' homes; I was a student), went out to the pub with them, hung out with them... and it was 6 months or more before they mentioned having a boyfriend or girlfriend, and then didn't even name the person or introduce the person. And I liked that. I liked the fact that they didn't foist themselves on you or dump their whole life story on you in the first five minutes. I'm a private person, and I liked the fact that English people didn't pump me for information about myself or burden me with knowing stuff about them I didn't want to know. We could talk about events or ideas instead of ourselves or other people.

My friend had a birthday dinner party in a restaurant where everyone at the table got an envelope with a paper inside listing what you had in common with the person on either side of you (could be as simple as "you both have a dog"). Great ice breaker.

@@bcayehe is a level of pretentious that borders on the absurd. He has the inner grace of dead fish. His arrogant tendency to force himself to the center of attention carries no social grace. Most importantly of all he's a proper knob head.

As a 71 year old English person who hasn’t lived in England since I was 21 the only remnant of my Englishness is the airplane seat thing, other than that there’s a lot to dislike about being an uptight, ungracious English person. I know there’s a certain amount of tongue in cheek with regards to some comments, but come on…Romesh!!!

I used to agree with Dyer about lol, but I think people use it more to convey that the comment should be taken lightheartedly if there is a more serious and insulting way to take it.
