My dear, I think this series was about how its the Folks, the Humans who are the producers and cause of these lovely times and we can do the same today, if only we could find such like minds and souls as these nice people here were. But it could be still if we really wanted it. Nothing has to be GONE, even God doesn't destroy, He REPURPOSES.

Yeah, they had 12 whole days off just for Christmas, and there was numerous other holy days on their calendar. Nowadays most workers are lucky to get just Christmas day off and have no actual vacation days. If it weren't for federal laws restricting work hours we wouldn't get any days off. And to think hunter-gatherers only have to work 4 hours a day to survive. Even for farm work, there was only really intense fieldwork during certain times of the year, notably plowing in the spring, which was only a few days, and harvesting in the fall. Winter was something of an off season, there were animals to care for and other things to do, but not that time-intensive. Now there is no off-season for most people. If we could keep most modern medicine and sanitation systems I'd happily go back in most other ways.

@@amberkat8147 If you have a back yard you can plant every inch with whatever fruits and vegetables can be successfully grown in your region, maybe even have a chicken coop. If no yard, there are likely community gardens in your city where you can rent a plot for really cheap, year-round. And even if you live in a high-rise apartment, you don't have to use the electricity, light the rooms with candles or kerosine lamps, stay warm with bundled clothing and blankets, cool with the widows open, etc. I don't know how you would watch youtube videos though, lol. It's fun to romanticize the past but even if the work is as easy and quick to do as you say (and I suspect you might be underestimating that), what would a modern person do with all that free time? I mean a modern person used to being entertained with modern inventions. Just now I think to myself, 'I would pick up sewing again, like when I was married and didn't have to work full-time.' But then I remember, my sewing machine is electric, lol.

13:59 this is just insane to me like, I can go to my pantry right now and have each of those spices in a ready-to-use little container, or at the very least go to the grocery store and buy said spices altogether for less than an hours worth of pay based on my personal hourly income.
This is one of my favorite things about history, is that it shows how far we’ve come as a civilization just to have cinnamon ready to go on a shelf in my pantry. In fact, if I’m feeling fancy, I can buy the cinnamon bark stick things 😅 and grind the cinnamon myself. I just love those little moments where you can compare life today verses life back then

I love everything that Ruth Goodman does….She’s not a bit timid or afraid or squeamish to “get her hands dirty” handling whatever she needs to - which, BTW, would turn my stomach. God love her!!!
Her enthusiasm for history is so genuine and she is the hardest working “teacher” that desires nothing more than to present history in the most authentic way as possible. I consider myself one of her many “students,” and I live in NC. She is absolutely incredibly AWESOME!! Let me quickly add the answer to the question often asked “If you were stranded …on an island, on a mountain, in a secluded cabin in Alaska - almost anywhere really - (LMBO), who would you want to be stranded with?” Answer (without hesitation): Ruth Goodman, especially since I want to survive - LMBO!!

In polish tradition we have the Wigiłia, 13 meatless, very specific dishes on December 24..starting when the first star appears in the sky..then we pass around the opłatki, like a communion like wafer with different scenes imprinted on them..each person gets there own and takes a piece of everyone else's..starts with the father or eldest patriarch, all the way down to the youngest girl..there is even one for the animals..there is hay on the table with a white table cloth over it..a chair and empty plates is always left out for either Christ should He decide to come, or a guest or beggar, if one happens to show up..then presents and some drinking..then all go to Pasterka, Christmas Midnight Mass..then next day food, presents, visiting family..but the big deal is Christmas Eve Wigiłia..
Then Jan 6,. 3 Kings Day, there is a chalk blessing above the entry door of the family home writing "20+K+M+B+24" for 2024 for example, written with blessed chalk..then blessing of throats on Saint Blaise Day Feb 1, and Candlesmas, the next day we take candles to Church to get blessed, and those candles are lit during storms to protect from lightning. Candlemas officially ends the Christmas Season..yes, there's the Christmas Octave, and the 12 days, but the Season officially lasts to and ends on February 2..there's many other things we do, but that's some it. God bless Mary protect +++

Yes, the "12 days of Christmas" is the 12 days AFTER Christmas Eve until Epiphany! I really dislike it when people take down everything before then!!!!!! Don't celebrate the holiday if one cannot do it properly!!!!

The 25th of December still is the first day of the 12 days of Christmas. The feast days of the saints are still kept. Several things the narrator said "was" for still Is.

congratulations ruth! you were fantastic. the acting even better than Katherine Hepburn in Golden Pond! i really find all of you so successful. thx for giving us a chance to experience life style in tudor age. as a classical archaeologist, i am quite fascinated with all i learn here... tallow candles, stooking sheaves, laying gorse under barley, alexanders, primrose, dandelion, hyssop as winter staples, pies made in coffins, fish, puffin, seals... stone masonry, carpentry, iron smelting and even steel production. absolutely fantastic!!!

Every time I watch Ruth, Peter, and Tom, I learn new things and understand the past better. Of course roles were reversed: someone became the lord of Misrule; a boy became a bishop. It was a time of reversal, just as the sun itself was reversing; bringing long days out of short ones. Our ancestors understood the pattern of the universe and imitated it.

I've been lucky enough to have real mince meat pie before! I had it a couple of times when I was a child. One of my grandmothers made it. I remember always asking for mince meat pie on the holidays and as I got older it was the kind that didn't have meat.
