What Was History's Worst Christmas Job? | Worst Christmas Jobs | Timeline

- How did some Christmas traditions develop, when in reality, many of the places, times, and jobs of the story do not fit? Shepherding in December, no. Boar? Goose? Turkey? All unlikely, especially since they were locally unavailable or the preparation of them was arduous and disgusting. All the finery - glasses, fabrics, dining utensils, each meant hard hours in sweatshops, poorly paid, and unsafe. These, and many other, intrinsic elements have their history explored.

If you listen closely, you can hear the bells because Tony’s still there 😂
It's worth mentioning that the old norse yule ("jul" in swedish, and probably other scandi languages too) is very much alive and living in the western christmas tradition even today, maybe more here up north than elsewhere. The christmas ham (Särimner, the boar that reincarnated after each slaughter), the christmas goat, the christmas tree (spruce, signifying the evergreens during wintertime), the significance of light during the darkest time of the year around winter solstice and not least of all, the fact that we still call it "jul". All in all, in essence, what english speaking people call christmas ties in much more with the old norse tradition than the christian profanation of it.
What's with the christmas goat?
@@Bamboule05 The Christmas goat is believed to come from Thor's goats, who used to pull his wagon.
Heathen here! Thanks for mentioning this- the tradition is very much alive!
For sure! ❤ Thank you, as a Christian I am not celebrating Christmas anymore since learning of these things. How the Roman Catholic Church actually used Christianity for power, part of that was changing things to match their more Paegan roots. Like how God was represented looking like Jupiter and Jesus like Saturn. Also Jesus was most likely born during Sukkot. This makes sense most based on the Bible as well as the rituals happening in context. Like the shepherds in the field. Sacrificial sheep especially would still be likely getting air at night at that time, but definitely not in winter since they were special and kept safe. Other sheep possibly would be in winter. But it's the sacrificial ones that hold special significance in the Bible verses of Jesus' birth.
Interestingly enough, the goat thing was likely from the Hebrews. A lot of if not all Paegan rituals were taken from older Hebrew rituals, and often twisted into something new based on that. Their Valkyries for example, are similar to demonic creatures in old Hebrew texts, as well as many of the seasonal tithings. In case you're unaware; Judaism was basically the foundation of Christianity since their TaNak is our old Testament. ❤
I do find a lot of the Pagean pagentry to be interesting for sure and I get why it's a temptation for many Christians to participate. Of course many simply don't know.
@@Bamboule05The Hebrews used "scape goats" and I don't doubt that was part of it. A lot of Paeganism actually comes from Hebrew religious practices.
Similarly, understanding the Hebrew rituals helps explain why the *sacrificial* sheep specifically would not be out in winter, and that Jesus' birth timing is explained in relation to his cousin's birth and the festival of Sukkot. Not tax season.
It's interesting to note that the calendar for Hebrews has the start of the year in Spring. (Makes sense, right?) And the Gregorian Calendar changes that for the world.
The Roman Catholic Church was a way for Rome to maintain power and influence after losing grip on their overreaching imperialized territory.
They switched from the militaristic and obvious political involvement to Religious politics and subterfuge, assassins etc.
The Romans and Greeks had already had much trouble dominating the Jews, actually every nation basically failed to do so permanently. Then when the saints started to push back on the Romans (the original name for any and all Christians)...they chose to adapt using Christianity. A very opportunistic tactic. Albeit deceptive. Earliest art depicting Jesus and the descriptions of God and His angels...very different from how the Catholic Church changes a lot of that. And is how most people think of it today. The Catholic Church is actually very against much of the basic Christian doctrine, so it's interesting people blindly agree they are Christian and the fact that throughout history; the Catholics have used the title to adapt. The crusades were not Christian in nature, but Catholic, dominating natives was Catholic, not Christian....
Sorry for the tangent but I'm passionate about this topic!
Tony is an absolute doll ... what a fantastic episode! Thank you!
Limelight and carbon arc lights both used open flames to create extremely bright light. So bright that it affected the eyes of anyone who spent much time staring directly into the lamps.
Merry Christmas in those times must have been a real challenge...I just lost my appetite watching this .. I think I'll have a fast today
Thank you Baldric.
Boom! Boom! Boom!

The Saturnalia hats look like Smurf hats.
I love watching anything Tony Robinson does. Hes def my favorite documentarian.
Mopping up puke then popping an olive 😃 nice 1 Tony.
Usually, when plucking chickens, you first scald them in boiling water to loosen the feathers to make it easyer to pluck. Keeps the dust down, too. Why are they plucking turkeys dry?
Maybe the flavor is different since it's not being partially cooked by the boiling water. Either way, plucking a bird seems really tedious.
Given the size of turkeys that'd be quite a large vat of water to keep boiling while they were doing all the Christmas turkeys. Maybe back in the day it just wasn't worth the effort?
31:25 , 31:57 and 33:58 - I can speak from first hand experience how dangerous mixing hydrogen and oxygen can be. In short, it was high school days, we did an experiment in science class that, in the end result, produced massive bubbles filled with hydrogen forming at the bottom of a large bowl of water. While the teacher wasn't supervising, one of my classmates lit a match and held it above where the hydrogen bubbles were surfacing. The ratio of hydrogen from the bubbles and the oxygen between the water surface and match was a lot bigger and the resulting bang was heard throughout the two story building. I was sitting front and centre during the blast, fell backwards off my chair and my ears were ringing. 😅
What is it that there is always one idiot student in high school science class. We had two that decided to put drops of iodine in the fish tank. It was a fairly large tank that the teacher had for several years. All dead.
I love this show soooo much. Actually there’s a lot of British history series that I’m obsessed with
I binge on them so steadily, I find myself thinking/talking to myself with an English accent sometimes lol
Tony, you need to warn a person before taking your jacket off to reveal the dress and apron! Dog got a face full of water!! Luckily, she's used to it!!
It wasn't a good idea watch this just before christmas dinner was it?
Probably not
Are you sure? It couldn't hurt to try again this year.
Perfect idea really. Lol
Here in Denmark, we call Christmas "jul." Old Norse for feast. Other than that, our Christmas today, is very similar to the British.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
That’s because every Christian holiday was stolen from a pagan holiday. Just like the days of the week. L
Yeah, & preparing a fresh or frozen turkey for dinner STILL ain't no joke. Ribs, breast & backbones'll scrape & cut fingers & knuckles to shreds, while the hands are in there washing, buttering & stuffing. 'Course, it ain't like doing 20-30 a day!
Jol (Scandinavian Yule) was only actually 3 days as it was the full moon phase following the winter solstice; it's a separate tradition to the 12 days of Christmas which originated in the east, probably Babylon, the 12 days represent the 12 stations of the sun.
Thank you! This is a wonderful surprise for those alone.
Agreed! I came back home from a difficult family Christmas and do appreciate this episode.
Agreed. My house really doesn't celebrate the holiday, and with an illness, im sort of flying solo tonight. This was more cheerful than the last 10 Christmases combined! Tony always brings it, such a delight
At the Saturnalia, when she said to Tony about women not vomiting or else could be seen as a adulterous woman, and he goes withouth skipping a beat : Can you hold on to it then? it was a funny bit, caught her expression, priceless :D and towards the end he goes again: To be fair you do look a little bit green. Best in show, sir Tony Robinson.
Following inthe footsteps of the great David Attenborough, just as important as the information is who delivers it, good on ya
drinking and eating was the true Spirit of Christmas? i didnt know that, thank you baldric, for pointing that Out. 😂
Tony is such a delight, this was a fun episode that I plan to share with my family
100% Tony is a legend! Have you seen many of his documentaries? I've been binge-watching the last few days
You have a cunning plan to share it with your family
tucking into my dinner while watching this when the fellow spews his ring lol, appetite has diminished a bit
When you sit down to eat Turkey, you will really appreciate the dinner Tony….wouldn’t you?? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 🏴😊👍🇺🇸
This was christmas 2004, that was 18 years ago, enjoy!
STOP MAKING ME FEEL OLD 😭😭😭
I could tell Tony has never been a janitor. 😂
Why do people complain about free videos ? Why not watch something else they also don’t get billed for ? BTW I quite enjoyed this and thanks to those who put it out here
BLOODY RIGHT ✅ I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE COMPLAIN WHEN IT'S FREE FOR GOD'S SAKE RIGHT.
I’d rather do some of these jobs than spend another Christmas with my step mother
I will never understand why anybody would consume alcohol which would 100 % make them vomit copiously. I'd rather steer well clear of it and stick to water or juice or whatever else would hopefully not, make you throw up all the good food you just enjoyed. Awful!
Sending love from Ohio, USA
And from your neighbor in Pennsylvania, USA
Can I have money instead?
California!
Merry Christmas USA
Sending love back from the "Free State" of Maryland! :)
Again much appreciation to Tony. Give that man a raise
Christmas is very subdued in New England, now I know why, thanks Puritans
I don't think Christmas is sub due anywhere in USA
That entire segment with the boars head was disgusting. 😂
Tony, props to you for actually eating that food. You are braver than me, gunga din! Happy Christmas!
You mean 'Saturnalia'
Great sense of humor and gorgeous documentary!
Such an interesting series but why do they insist on continuing the filmed dialogue underneath the narration. I can't hear what either are saying. :-(
TiME Line W I wish you a merry Christmas 🎄 ⛄⛄🌲 may your day be merry and bright
Love the channel. Would love to see an doc on Queen Katarina Kosarica!
Working in retail I feel like a lot of holidays today are only around because companies generate a lot of sales from it, like, Christmas stuff already in October? C'mon. Thanksgiving too I guess, again just to advertise to consumers and milk more money out of them.
Love these Docs! So interesting 🤔
This is great to watch on Christmas Day. TYSM
Aw Paul Stokes! He really gets around these kinds of shows. I really liked him in Supersizers Go/Eat
Tony you'd need balls of steel to do all of that gross stuff with a turkey! Yuck!
David, I worked as a cashier in a butchers shop on Saturdays from the age of 14 to 18. (Long long time ago). The butcher taught me to gut a chicken and pull its feet off over a hook to remove the tendons. He said that if I could do that I wouldn’t be squeamish about food. He was right !
Ahh liberty cap. Looks exactly like a magic mushroom. I have been knowledged
Thanks for this, it was quite interesting. I learned so much from this, including the backstory of what Limelight. Hat tip to the earliest Audio Visual Engineers, as it took a lot of thoughtful engineering to create it...without accidentally setting the venue alight.
I always thought lime light was named after the vegetable? Or is it a fruit? Now I don't know 😅
This might be the best "Timeline" documentary ever!
This was on TV before Timeline was even an idea
What is the series called? Cuz ive only seen them on this channel
Wait is it really just called " the worst jobs in history"?
@K J - yes!

Oh wow Tony, you get yourself into really interesting predicament.
Those dolls look real fragil.
Good documentary, pity about the rubbish sound editing
i've been watching these 'worst jobs in history' videos and have only one question. What were the best, non skilled jobs in history?
Being King
Being rich.
Thank you , Timeline .
Dan snow , you know......how to have a good Crimbo !

Thanks.
Oh great present thank you.
Brilliant
I'd have set that guy on fire if he bossed me round the kitchen like that.
In my country (Austria), the pluck was/is what the hunter is entitled to, while the deer is the property of the landlord. and there´s really delicious pluck recipes, the best known is Beusch(e)l.
This guy should do some sortof collab with Mike Rowe. Perfect
Merry Christmas to all
isnt that a reupload ? feels like i watched this not so long ago
Liver, kidneys and heart? Those are delicacies
Hmm so if Jesus' birth was in March or April, he could've been resurrected on his birthday. That'd make Christmas and Easter on the same day lol.
I like a 2 for 1
"(smooch)" "Judas, it's not my birthday until next week" "That's not why I kissed you"
@@Tareltonlives ok?
What's with the crowns tho? No one in America does thar so it must be some historical tradition that didn't make it long over here. Just curious. Idk what the hat and crown thing was about
Are you on Rumble?
It seems weird that they just didn’t have receptacles for vomiting, like spittoons
Gutting a bird isn’t as bad as you would think, Ive done it and its just a bit wet
Happy Xmas everyone .
Anyone know if Tony has done documentaries on strangest ethnically historical habits like burping or not after dinner to say thanks or just rude? 🤮 after a good meal to be able to eat more of especially good meals???
I’m glad my father only brought home grocery bags of doves for me to pluck when I was a kid!
Well why can't we have internal combustion engines that run on a hydrogen/oxygen mix then? We're certainly never going to run out of either one.
Tony is absolutely hilarious! He cracks me up 😂
That was wonderful and incredibly queasy.
Enough after the Eye bit ... and I'm not normally squeezes .
Puke cleaning up well well welcome to being a parent
Never seen that one ,brilliant ,watching it on christmas day with me missus. All lovely till i served up a drink she hadn't tried and didn't tell her,now i'm in the doghouse,Lol as the youngens say....
Okay thanks I'm grossed out
Plot twist: Doordash
Once he through up. i was gone.
Turns out…im a poor man’s log.
Same..😉😁
yeay, more documentaries with badly mixed audio
Yeah, the background music is bleeding all over everything.
Are they recovering the video's from somewhere and they can't edit the original project file or something? This is a pretty amateur mistake to make.
He is great
