She did not, I work at a car rental and I mainly drive the cars most of our base model cars can do the same thing, such as Nissan, Toyota, hundi, and chevy, but our premiums can't, and that would be the bmw, Mercedes, chevy suburban, range rover.

In modern cars the computer has to do the changes, the thing you are moving is the selector that gives the command to the transmission module. If the transmission module determines that the change can damage or end the transmission. It puts the transmision in neutral and waits until the parameters considered safe are reached to do the change. If the car was in Limp mode, you are likely to explode your transmission
What effect would limp mode have on the transmission? In my car the limp mode limits the speed to about 25-30 miles an hour. I don't really know how the transmission would be left behind if the car computer is still in the car.

Mechanic here. The car's computer can tell you're still going forward and clearly at a significant speed, so it simply will not engage reverse (until you're nearly stopped). On older cars, once reverse engages the rear wheels usually lock up if the engine doesn't stall since you're suddenly putting a massive load on the wheels in a different direction.
My 96 grand Cherokee and 97 explore you can do this in and driving to school my cousin did it in his 87 Crown Vic With no problems. However his crown Vic did allow it to go into first gear at 60 there’s no gauge for RPMs in that year but it was definitely redlined considering how it sounded like a no pipe monster truck
They used to have these crazy inventions called REAR VIEW MIRRORS but I can see how much more convenient it is just to throw that sucker into reverse at almost 60 mph instead. 🤔
I throw my car into reverse just to fuck with people, I don't use the brake peddle to brake check people I use the e brake so the lights don't turn on, I pay taxes for the whole road so I use the whole road, I duct taped my lights together becouse I could, I put dents in my car and call them memorys. Fuck warning labels, know what your doing and there unless anyways.

I did this to a 1956 Buick Roadmaster while on the way to an automotive junk yard back in 1973. When I engaged reverse, the rear tires locked up and the car went into a skid, bouncing all over the road. An Ontario Provential Police car just at that very moment rounded the curve in the road, coming towards me. He turned around, and stopped me. I was just a short distance from Art's Auto wreckers and explained that probably a shock had gone and I was on my way to Arts. He let me go. By the way, the transmittion was not affected, Drive, Reverse, Park etc all worked as normal afterwards...'I checked'!

Like a lot of people, I also had a feeling nothing would happen. Once I accidentally put my mom's 2001 Silverado (which had late 90's technology) into reverse on the highway, I meant to go into Neutral, but pushed too hard and went past it. Nothing happened there either aside from the gear indicator showing R. I quickly went back into drive. Both vehicles are well engineered (for their time). My 27 year old self is just as impressed with the Camry's safety features as my 6 year old self with the Silverado's automatic headlights. Still one small feature I never saw again was the turn signal reminder that triggered a chime if they were still on for more than a mile.
Yep, 06 Sierra here (GMC Silverado) I actually forgot about the turn signal reminder, and it is a nice feature. After about 30 seconds, it beeps and says "turn signal on" on the dash indicator. I just figured most vehicles had it now.
It's called idiot proofing. It won't engage reverse if the computer detects forward motion. If this safeguard wasn't built in, you would have destroyed your transmission. The transmission hydraulic pump would overpressurize the valve body, and blow out the seals. You could also strip the gears, split the transmission case, snap axle shafts, destroy c.v. joints, and if you were going fast enough, force the engine to rotate backwards which also would be very bad.

@@nickblack7910 Well, what I said probably won't happen in all cases but it is a possibility. I personally saw it happen years ago to an 85 chevy cavalier with the quad 4 engine. The car was put into reverse at 70 mph according to the owner. The transaxle case was split down one side with fluid running out everywhere. When the trans was dissasembled, the planetary gears were stripped, broken input shaft, burnt out clutch packs, cracked valvebody, blown seals, blown axle seals, snapped left halfshaft, and wasted both inner cv joints. The only thing I take away from this video is the owner is trashing her car. Shifting into reverse while driving in a modern car may not cause mechanical damage, but it will cause financial damage. It will trip the check engine light and throw a code. When it goes to the dealer, they will see the car was being abused and will happily void the warranty. Not to mention, the car will now will have 0 trade in value. So yeah, what this video portrays is really foolish and not cool....
You need a manual transmission to actually get it to go into reverse while driving. It will take an extraordinary amount of effort to get it to go in though.
@@fool4563 I accidentally shifted from 5 gear to Reverse Gear. I had a gaming setup with 6 gears, my car only has 5 gears (manual transmission). So I accidentally shifted from 5 to reverse thinking of the 6 gear I had on my gaming setup. Well... I had the clutch pressed down and the transmission made a horrible noise... And then I knew I f*cked up. But it doesn't seem to have killed the transmission car still drives fine I guess. PS: I had the clutched pressed the whole time. There is normally a mechanism which doesn't let you shift from 5th to reverse but I simply went into neutral and then reverse

Very good. I was riding with my dad in his 96 dodge Ram when I was a kid and accidentally bumped the shifting column with my knee and it went into reverse. We were going about 50 down a steep hill in the mountains. It basically sent the truck to neutral and we couldn’t put it back into drive until he stopped and restarted the truck. Still glad it didn’t do anything bad, but it scared us both because neither of us knew if it had a safety feature like that or if I broke the trans.

The alternative to this is usually that the transmission won't budge at all. Most cars require you to at least be stepping on the brake. In the event that you can actually put your car in reverse while in gear, it's pretty much what you'd expect. You'll tear your transmission to shreds, and at the very least will lose your reverse gear if not the entire transmission. Pretty sure with these the computer tracks RPM and brake usage. When you are driving and set it into reverse, I imagine when you step on the brake it will switch gears once the RPM reaches an acceptable level to make it safe to do so. Not good practice regardless.
Nope but close most cars requires the mph to be lower than 5mph for it to be put in reverse, I know this because I do it all the time when parking rentals
Lol only required brake application is from park after that you can shift any gear u want and if you know what to do it will engage reverse while moving forward I don't advise it though cause we'll let's just say transmission fluid is red and another of shrapnel in a red blob on the ground raises a lot of questions that are not easy to explain
In manual either it locks you out or you grind the gears In case that you manage to push it in and not grind the whole gear, you can make the engine spin in reverse Probably won't fire up again after that.

There’s a story on my family of a husband of my dad’s aunt that he used to do this to many of his automatic ford mustangs when he was very drunk, but it was on purpose not because he mistook.That was in the early 70’s here in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was a well known and rich doctor so he didn’t care about anything. He blew many gearboxes doing that shit and died of alcoholism.
The backup camera function is controlled by a switch that is activated once the lever is put in the reverse position like your backup lamps. You could bypass the switch with an added switch on the dash to turn it on with out messing with the transmission lever.
How don’t people know this. Most cars with back up cams have those buttons. SMH. Common sense people. I blame the education system. People are just becoming less intelligent these days. I’m even a victim. SMH.
Thanks to the ingenuity of the engineers and designers who incorporate these type of safeguards into cars because they anticipate various scenarios where someone will most likely do something dumb that could not only endanger their lives but the lives of other people on the road.
I think people don’t realize even in older cars that have had it happen, nothing negative came from it. A lot of stories shared here from older cars and the experience they had and the result was not as scary as we have made it to be.

Yep, 06 Sierra here (GMC Silverado) I actually forgot about the turn signal reminder, and it is a nice feature. After about 30 seconds, it beeps and says "turn signal on" on the dash indicator. I just figured most vehicles had it now.

It's called idiot proofing. It won't engage reverse if the computer detects forward motion. If this safeguard wasn't built in, you would have destroyed your transmission. The transmission hydraulic pump would overpressurize the valve body, and blow out the seals. You could also strip the gears, split the transmission case, snap axle shafts, destroy c.v. joints, and if you were going fast enough, force the engine to rotate backwards which also would be very bad.

@@nickblack7910 Well, what I said probably won't happen in all cases but it is a possibility. I personally saw it happen years ago to an 85 chevy cavalier with the quad 4 engine. The car was put into reverse at 70 mph according to the owner. The transaxle case was split down one side with fluid running out everywhere. When the trans was dissasembled, the planetary gears were stripped, broken input shaft, burnt out clutch packs, cracked valvebody, blown seals, blown axle seals, snapped left halfshaft, and wasted both inner cv joints. The only thing I take away from this video is the owner is trashing her car. Shifting into reverse while driving in a modern car may not cause mechanical damage, but it will cause financial damage. It will trip the check engine light and throw a code. When it goes to the dealer, they will see the car was being abused and will happily void the warranty. Not to mention, the car will now will have 0 trade in value. So yeah, what this video portrays is really foolish and not cool....
Be honest, we have all been curious about this, just not dumb enough to try it.

You need a manual transmission to actually get it to go into reverse while driving. It will take an extraordinary amount of effort to get it to go in though.

On most manual cars the computer can still activate the clutch if you go in reverse while driving so you still won't destroy things
@@fool4563 I accidentally shifted from 5 gear to Reverse Gear. I had a gaming setup with 6 gears, my car only has 5 gears (manual transmission). So I accidentally shifted from 5 to reverse thinking of the 6 gear I had on my gaming setup. Well... I had the clutch pressed down and the transmission made a horrible noise... And then I knew I f*cked up. But it doesn't seem to have killed the transmission car still drives fine I guess. PS: I had the clutched pressed the whole time. There is normally a mechanism which doesn't let you shift from 5th to reverse but I simply went into neutral and then reverse

Very good. I was riding with my dad in his 96 dodge Ram when I was a kid and accidentally bumped the shifting column with my knee and it went into reverse. We were going about 50 down a steep hill in the mountains. It basically sent the truck to neutral and we couldn’t put it back into drive until he stopped and restarted the truck. Still glad it didn’t do anything bad, but it scared us both because neither of us knew if it had a safety feature like that or if I broke the trans.

The alternative to this is usually that the transmission won't budge at all. Most cars require you to at least be stepping on the brake. In the event that you can actually put your car in reverse while in gear, it's pretty much what you'd expect. You'll tear your transmission to shreds, and at the very least will lose your reverse gear if not the entire transmission. Pretty sure with these the computer tracks RPM and brake usage. When you are driving and set it into reverse, I imagine when you step on the brake it will switch gears once the RPM reaches an acceptable level to make it safe to do so. Not good practice regardless.
Nope but close most cars requires the mph to be lower than 5mph for it to be put in reverse, I know this because I do it all the time when parking rentals

Lol only required brake application is from park after that you can shift any gear u want and if you know what to do it will engage reverse while moving forward I don't advise it though cause we'll let's just say transmission fluid is red and another of shrapnel in a red blob on the ground raises a lot of questions that are not easy to explain

In case that you manage to push it in and not grind the whole gear, you can make the engine spin in reverse

@Kostka_Bruhowa just have to be fast and shove it in I drove one if the farm trucks for a year without any brakes and the only way to stop was push the clutch and slam it into reverse and give it a lot of gas the clutch was dead at the end if the year but it was a pretty kych dead truck to start with I was just using it till it died

There’s a story on my family of a husband of my dad’s aunt that he used to do this to many of his automatic ford mustangs when he was very drunk, but it was on purpose not because he mistook.That was in the early 70’s here in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was a well known and rich doctor so he didn’t care about anything. He blew many gearboxes doing that shit and died of alcoholism.

The backup camera function is controlled by a switch that is activated once the lever is put in the reverse position like your backup lamps.
You could bypass the switch with an added switch on the dash to turn it on with out messing with the transmission lever.

Thanks to the ingenuity of the engineers and designers who incorporate these type of safeguards into cars because they anticipate various scenarios where someone will most likely do something dumb that could not only endanger their lives but the lives of other people on the road.
I think people don’t realize even in older cars that have had it happen, nothing negative came from it. A lot of stories shared here from older cars and the experience they had and the result was not as scary as we have made it to be.
