Great info. I would recommend having a professional adjust the spring. There is so much energy storage in a spring. It could easily break an arm or throw you off a ladder

Much appreciated brother. I just moved in to my house and my garage door sounded like the lamentations of the denizens of hell while in motion. It was supposedly new a couple years ago but it looks like the techs never bothered to lubricate any of the hinges. A thin coat of gear oil on the pins and my door is whisper silent compared to before.

I had a noisy door. I tested its resistance by opening manually. I then lubed up the rollers on the wheels and all the one between the door panels. I did the spring and the cable rollers- bearing included.
I then opened it manually again and there is a noticeable difference. Seems lighter. The motor has a smoother sound. Makes me think it may have been on the higher end of its limits while struggling to lift the dry door. Another place where lube provides great benefits... ;)

Thanks to ToolboxDIY's tutelage, I was able to get the squeaks removed. I used lithium grease on hinges, roller pins and tracks and liquid wrench garage door lubricant on the spring and cables. It is absolutely critical do lubricate all items noted in the video since this is a system of sorts where all components work together. Don't just do the tracks and head to the couch to drink beer.

Excellent video - well done! My door was stopping and rough and so hard to move manually - I am going to give this a try.
If you have the cheap rollers that come with most garage doors, I would start by replacing those. Then check to see if it is still hard to move manually. If that yields no improvement, the springs might need to be adjusted with more tension.
I see thousands of customers upgrading to bearing rollers.
It makes no difference if your applying thick heavy grease.
For some reason old people think grease solves everything.
The wheels are supposed to roll not slide and cause a flat spot.

While all of my rollers spin freely, both of the shafts on the # 2 hinges don't spin when I try to move them. So I thought about taking out the rollers and lubricating inside the hinge, and maybe even replacing the rollers. I live in Florida and the shafts on my rollers have shaft clips. How do I get them off to change remove the rollers? Do I need a special tool? Can I reuse them on new rollers or put them back on the old ones if I decide not to replace them? I called DIY Garage Door Parts and they didn't know what I was talking about, the guy said he never heard of garage door shaft clips. They seem specific to hurricane areas. Thanks!
How much slack should the chain have? Mine has enough the chain sages to just below the track.
A helpful video, although I would have liked you to have explained how after releasing the door from the drive chain, then after carrying out the maintenance, how the door release is then reconnected to the chain drive.
I know how this is done,...but I'm sure many would not know how to go about getting the door relocated with the locking mechanism.

I also was wondering how to undo the door release when done. Probably will look up another video to do this. And no I definitely won’t mess with the spring (I’ve seen the work on it for our cargo trailer and definitely too dangerous for me)
What does one do if the bolts going into the door are stripped out and spin ....will not tighten? I have several like that.... holes / screws are pretty big.... approximately 1/4 inch diameter threads.
Mines squeeling and rattling alot and stops half way up half the dang time. I'll go through and lube everything and make sure there's no obstructions. Thanks for the advice
How did your garage door work after you did the "tune-up"?
My garage door goes up halfway, and then there is a clicking noise like 'rrrrrrrrrrrr' and the garage store stops moving. I thought it may be stuck, but it moves up and down freely when I move it manually. What could be the issue?
Good video. Only tip would be to lubricate the top of the springs. As the springs wind the lubricant will work its way through the spring coils. The synthetic is okay. I prefer 3-in-1 oil. High temp lithium grease for genie screw drive and chain drive.

Hey, I just noticed one of the hinges is loose, 2 bolts/screws fell out of it. I tried to put them back, but they are kinda just spinning freely and falling out. So I'm guessing I need either biger bolts or new holes or something. Any suggestions?
I had a new hurricane rated Clopay two car garage door installed in 2017, my question is how often do I lubricate all the parts?
once or twice a year to keep lubricant in place. Most important is the SPRINGs and the 2 shaft bearings near cable pulleys.
Figure the spring shaft not only needs to turn while the door is traveling it also needs to slide through for follow spring expansion or retraction of about 1/2"!
which spray lubricant would work best? WD40 Non-fling roller chain lubricant, Silicone Spray lubricant or graphite dry lube? Thanks
I use a white lithium grease spray. You can buy that from Home Depot (cheaper) or Amazon.
Never use wd40. It hurts more than it helps because it is just displacing water. Use Clopay prolube at Home Depot.
Wear safety glasses when spraying stuff.

Here in Melbourne Australia I just paid AU$199 for the service which is I suppose about US$150……
Having said that the springs required re-tensioning and I’m told that is very dangerous to attempt as a DIYer
I don't recommend tensioning springs for the average homeowner which is why I don't cover how to do it. I do cover how to determine if you should re-tension them so you can at least save the money if it isn't needed.

I do it once a year. Usually, the lubrication is all that is needed. I've rarely had to adjust anything after the first tune up.
Does WD-40 work for the lubricant?
No
$50 for all that would be a bargain, and I'd tip an extra $30!
It takes some people over a hour to make $50. This looks like it can be done in a few minutes

A A competent technician would include spring adjustment with a basic maintenance. Never use a Jack of all trades Master of none. I’m not a garage guy just a lineman and have mine done every year by a reputable company.
So why are you watching videos on DIY Garage Door Maintenance? 🤔 If you're tech is doing a spring adjustment every year, he's not fixing the root cause. I've had one spring adjustment in 10 years (and I did hire a pro for that!).

don't have to lub the torsion springs as they are only twisting the torsion bar freely with no friction. just lub the 3 torsion bar support bearings.
The coils turn on each other. So there is friction.

In my experience, WD40 isn't a good option. It typically removes the older lubrication and then doesn't last very long.

I am a garage door professional and what do you do when the customer needs to adjust the tension in their spring? The MOST important and most expensive replacement part of the door?? The bottom brackets also be being loosened can severely hurt someone..which means the 49.00 bucks was well spent to have a professional complete and preform the work. A professional can also identify potential issues with the door,.
I appreciate the video and it was well done. But maintaining a garage door is important and can be dangerous if you do not know what you are doing.

First time home owner. Will wd40 work as a lubricant. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
That is definitely not a dumb question! Many people probably don't ask and just give WD-40 a try. WD-40 is not a great lubricate for a garage door. It is however a great cleaner will actually remove any other lubricants. Give 3-in-one Professional Garage Door Lubricant a try or Pro-44.
I’m big on saving money but please do not try to adjust the springs yourself, my grandpa has been in The trade for 46 years and has showed up to job sites with blood on the floor because people don’t realize how much tension is in those wound up springs.
Don't lube the drums.
You use way to much lub. It will be picking up dirt like crazy.
Instructions not clear. Garage door is now upside down.

Please for the love of God just call a professional. This guy just gave you great advice on how to get a slipped cable which leads to bent track and other issues. Do not try to adjust springs yourself people. There are many different factors that go into it that this dude didnt elaborate on because he isnt a proffesional. It is worth the service call to have someone who knows what they are doing to come out and look over everything.
Stop being a Karen! What he did was just an advice to try to fix it, if you try this and it doesn’t work, then you call the service company. He was very straight forward with explanation, just pay attention.
I have hired “the guy” to change springs but normal lubrication is something I will do my self. When I do have real problems tho, I call “the guy”. Same with 100% of plumbing and electrical. Just not worth the headache. The pros do it in half the time and I just have to write a check
@@donamaria1329yeah , this vinson76usmc, seems to be anti-diy. I say, you need to know your limitations, most people have sense enough to handle this job without endangering themselves. The satisfaction of performing preventive maintenance yourself is reward for a job well done. I just replaced a broken torsion spring, along with new cables, nylon rollers, and bearings for the torque tube. The satisfaction of knowing how and performing the job is a tremendous joy.
Bro, the video is basic maintenance. I’d say the only missing is to wear eye protection when spraying lube. He says to consult a professional or the other videos.

See 3:31 . By the time you open and close the door multiple times and then wipe off the excess, the lube coverage is more than adequate. Perfection is not worth it here, IMHO.

What you don't tell people is about a day later all that freaking oil drips all over your floor runs all down the garage door on the outside and the inside it's a total disaster and a mess and you didn't even adjust the doors for their closing to the concrete or anything like that? Not cool
