  • 30 years in and we have three theatrical releases. But none have them have ever been hugely successful. Why is that? Are Power Rangers movies just mediocre? Or do they individually have good qualities?
    What goes into making the perfect Power Rangers movie? We'll be comparing and contrasting 1995's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the Movie, 1997's Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, and 2017's Power Rangers to find our answer.
    And how much Krispy Kreme do we have to eat just to find that pesky Zeo Crystal?
    Which film was your favorite? Comment below!

    The 2017 one. I genuinely believe it would have been a huge hit if they had just stuck to the _source designs_ more. The problem was, it gave off the impression it wasn't going to honour the show's legacy, so people just skipped over it. This is entirely due to the gratuitous and totally unnecessary complete redesigns - of which Goldar and the Megazord, both incredibly iconic characters, were the worst offenders, being totally unrecognisable from the originals and having a completely different and unrecognisable silhouette - bad character design 101. At least with the new suits, you can kind of see it if you squint your eyes.
    Now many years later, old fans have gave it a chance because "eh, why not, it's free on [insert streaming service]" and almost universally agree it was a good film and that they should have given it a chance back when it originally released. Maybe not the greatest film ever, but certainly competently done.
    If they had kept everything the same, but used suit, monster and zord robot designs much closer to the originals, and had at least one more morphed martial arts fight half way through the film, instead of just the tiny, less than 5 minute, brawl before the zords at the end, we'd probably be talking about an upcoming _second sequel_ right now (and a first sequel would have already been pushed out).
    They got so much right with the film, the spirit of the characters, the character interaction, the lore of the franchise in regards to the possibilities of the Morphin' Grid or the importance of the Zeo Crystal, even giving Zordon a history, motivation and personality that made sense. It was just those blasted horrible redesigns that put everybody off.
    Just look at the near-miss that was the Sonic movie (another big popular 90s IP!), and how much the simple act of reverting the design of the character to something much more closely resembling the original design, propelled it to blockbuster success, resulting in a film that was much better than it had any right to be. That's exactly what Power Rangers needed, and would have had if they had employed the same wisdom the people behind the Sonic Movie were convinced to have.

      OH MY GOD, I CAN GUSH ABOUT THE SONIC MOVIE ALL DAY (I have a Sonic plush that's in the background of my streams).
      It wasn't perfect, but you're right, just the move to redesign lead to its success. Whether or not it did that directly, I think it definitely put a lot of trust in Sonic fans. Power Rangers just needs to do that as well.
      Thank you so much for you comment! 😊

      This right here! I think designing the suits well really depends on perspective. MMPR the Movie and PR2017 took the suits and turned them into what the standard for "modern superhero suit" was at the time. Instead, they should take the elements for the standard suit and bring into the existing design of the TV suits.

    Honestly, what you've said about suit design makes me question Hasbro's choices with the Cosmic Fury suits even more than I already have. The designs are trying to go for that DC suit, like that of Shazam's, but it just doesn't work, due to how bland the suits came out, and the fake abs make it even worse, making them look too cartoony and stupid. They already had a good design on hand with the Kyuranger suits, which is the season they're "adapting" from. And again, they had a full cast to work with, considering that these are the Dino Fury characters, and they could just easily use the suits from the Sentai by adding in new characters and develop them. This actually makes me feel that Hasbro might not be the right company to run the Power Rangers TV Show. And with them trying for a reboot just five years into them owning the brand, makes me feel that they don't know what they're doing with the franchise. This isn't helped by Hasbro laying off much of its work force, under their corrupt CEO Chris Cocks (Fitting name BTW.). They can still run the toyline, since that is their expertise, but the show's production should be handled by a different company, like NBC/Universal or something (Just NOT Disney or Warner Bros., the former were pretty incompetent when owning the franchise and didn't care about it, and the latter has a CEO that's spiraling out of control and is destroying the company from within with his terrible business practices.). I want Power Rangers to succeed, but I think it needs new owners in order to get it out of the state it's currently in.

    • @davidbeer5015
      @davidbeer5015 Před rokem +2

      Oddly, a lot of the Disney stuff was pretty good outside, primarily, one season.
      While I have yet to see what they'll look like in actual scenes, I personally don't hate the new suits currently. However, I do have a suspicion that it couod be Hasbro trying to ease away from relying on the Sentai for the content. If I remember correctly, they were already trying to use as little as possible for Dino Fury? Can even see an angle of that in the Once and Always special, "how well will this do without relying on that footage" since it has nothing.
      Personally, I'm fine with it. The connection to Super Sentai has never been an aspect of the series that I felt needed to stay. I'm willing to let the suits pass if we get something good out of it.

    • @Ubritoons96
      @Ubritoons96 Před rokem +17

      Honestly I wish Power Rangers could just TRY animation already. I’m not saying stop the OG live action shows or dedicate making a full animated reboot, maybe just a movie or a special. There are some fans that say PR could never do animation because it would take away from Sentai or whatever nonsense, but you never know if it’s not gonna work unless you try.
      Give it an action cartoon creative in the animation industry like say Ciro Neil (TMNT 2012), Glen Murakima (Teen Titans 2003) or Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack/Primal). Hell I may not be the biggest fan of they’re “In you Face” style of action sequences, but you could even give it to Flying Bark animation, the studio behind Monkie Kid and Moon Girl. I may prefer Tartakovsky’s more traditional action myself than FBA‘s UBER intense anime style, but even I can admit a Power Rangers cartoon by that studio would be freaking glorious eye candy.
      What the hell is taking Hasbro so long. XD

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  Před rokem +11

      I agree 1000%! I absolutely LOVE animation and an animated Power Rangers series is just free money that I'm surprised hasn't fully happened. We've had pitches in the past but a Brave and the Bold-style show that isn't limited to Sentai, actor availability, physical shooting challenges, etc. would open up a world of endless stories.
      We've gotten some "animatic" style stories before through Battle for the Grid and Super Legends' cutscenes. Imagine them fully animated.
      Also, I'd totally make a comics video. I just have to catch up lol. I'm over a year behind. 😂 I touch on the comics a bit on my Onyx video.

      PR fans don't really like change. I'm all for animation but the way the fans reacted when rumors of the Toei split happened were quite telling (whether or not they were true). I'm sure once one comes out, PR fans will turn tail and love it.
      I would personally give it to Studio Yotta. They've done some work for Sonic Mania, OK KO, Rick and Morty, DuckTales, Animaniacs, and Smiling Friends, among others. I think their style has a lot of personality which I think would be important for characters like Power Rangers who are fully helmeted. They'll need to be expressive.
      If I was talented enough to know Adobe Animate, Toonboom, or Blender, I'd love to animate a scene from Power Rangers as a proof of concept.

      @@animanco6833 Oh no, I agree too. I just didn’t say I wanted that in my initial comment because I was afraid some more vicious PR fans would snap me. Lol
      If we ever do get a PR animated series and it HAS to be based on MMPR as a springboard, it BETTER be the most streamlined/definitive incarnations of those characters. I am SO sick of those goody goody characterizations of the OG 93 cast being the basis and practically ruining the franchise during the 2010 shows. Like freaking have Kimberly be arrogant, have Tommy and Jason be realistic asshole rivals to each other, give Trini more character traits besides being the second girl of the group or the second smart one next to Billy. Give me a reason to care about Jason and the gang besides “Their friends and ALWAYS get along.” There’s no character tension with that, I’m sorry Haim Saban.
      Honestly, I have my critiques with the Boom comics and I’m (personally) not necessarily asking for a straight retelling of them in animated form like most people are, but I WILL agree with everyone else that they’re a great, even phenomenon step in the right direction in terms of maturing these absolute “90’s tropes” of characters and giving them more meat of relatability then OG MM EVER did. Hopefully with the success of them COME cartoonist or writer in Hollywood is listening and is willing to pitch a PR cartoon either exactly like or semi-similar to the comics that doesn’t treat the audience like babies like the OG 93 show or the 2010s PR stuff did

    Here's how i make a proper Power Rangers movie:
    1. Have the film's tone to be more Lighthearted, Colorful, Grounded, & Realistic Fight Scenes in the vein of the MCU, Transformers & Lord of the Rings.
    2. Cast age-appropriate young actors so they can have sequels if they grow old in the next 3 years.
    3. Make the suits to be more like Black Panther (the Morphing sequences to be more like Thor's Transformation scene from the 2011 Thor film).

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  Před rokem

      I like all of these. Especially the idea of using transformation sequences similar to Thor. I'm partial to the one from Thor: Ragnarok of him and Loki transforming when they first meet Hela. I would do it sort of similar to the show where there's still an elaborate transformation sequence, but it's implied to be practically instant in real time.

    The thing with the 2017 movie, is the sequels could've mixed up some storylines. The sequel could've been Green With Evil/Lord Zedd introduction/ White Ranger arc focusing more on Trini and Tommy as the main character arcs especially if they made Tommy into a girl like the rumors were saying. The 3rd movie could've move to a more Zack and Kimberly focus with Rita returning teaming up with Lord Zedd and mixing some of the current comic book story into Zedd's backstop being from the same species as Zordon.

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  Před rokem +3

      From a fan perspective, I think what you've laid out is great. It would work really well for a recurring storyline. But when it comes to marketing and actual production, there's not enough to set it apart. This format would work well with an episodic show with a film-budget (like House of the Dragon, Last of Us, etc.). But they also need to sell new merchandise, elevate the stakes with each film, and find ways to keep it from getting stale. Outside of doing two films, an adaptation of Day of the Dumpster and then Green with Evil, the reality is that there's not a strong enough story for the big screen to adapt. At least not without having to go into other teams and more world-building options, which is why I mention jumping ahead and interspersing adaptations of other seasons in. I'd love for them to do Lord Drakkon, but that storyline heavily relies on a long running legacy of characters.
      But what you've written can be used as jumping off point for sure. Just have to add those extra marketing elements. While a new villain or new zords can work for the show, film audiences just realistically want more.

  • @TheDrewsViewsShow
    @TheDrewsViewsShow Před rokem +14

    Yeah, it's a shame the 2017 move didn't kick off a PRU with maybe extra 2 or so movies that could expand to maybe new rangers, new forms and new ways to explore and try new settings or ideas. Expanding in terms of story, but keeping the simplicity with the Ranger suits and Zords. Being able to distinguish the group and recognizable. For branding wise.
    They would need to plan out each movie and what that could lead to in the future, but not rely on getting a sequel (Look at the Dark Universe, Tom Cruises Mummy) Knowing what you want to convey in terms in story/characters and tone.
    Being able to balance the line of the tone from bright and fun adventure to dark but serious moments.
    I wished that 2017 had been given more of a chance to shine with its characters and expand on the Morphin Grid. With the mix of the Rangers personal struggles.

From there, a long term plan can be made.

    My favorite PR movie is honestly the original. I love it the same way I love TMNT Secret of the Ooze; just a piece of 90s cheesy nonsense and I enjoy every minute of it. Turbo I’ve grown to enjoy over time, and the 2017 was fun but nothing too outrageous.
    But here’s how I would construct a PR movie for the modern day…
    1) Embrace the camp and cheesiness. Power Rangers on a whole is kind of the superhero kid show version of a Spanish soap opera; shocking reveals like a long lost sibling being the evil ranger, will they/won’t they relationships, etc. Power Rangers can have dark moments, but to shy away from the campiness kind of strips away what makes this franchise so special. I think we could actually get some fun and inspiring, similar to Star Wars, the OG Superman movies or Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.
    2) take more inspiration from the comics. Boom has been doing so much for the franchise that it would be a crime to not use these stories as a stepping off point. I don’t necessarily need a Shattered Grid style movie, but by god it would be awesome to see.

      "Embrace the camp and cheesiness. "
      No. Just no. This is what the 2017 movie did right and what so many of the Super Sentai series also do that, sadly, Power Rangers does not. It takes it more seriously, and that makes it more effective overall.
      "Power Rangers can have dark moments, but to shy away from the campiness kind of strips away what makes this franchise so special"
      I'm sorry, but no. What makes Super Sentai/Power Rangers "so special" is the great action filmmaking by Alpha Stunts (who took over the action filmmaking on Power Rangers starting in the 3rd season) and the cool costumes of the Rangers. Missing all of that because all you care about are corny lines by bad writers that actually ruin the great action is a really bizarre perspective to have.
      "I think we could actually get some fun and inspiring"
      You can have movies that are "fun and inspiring" and aren't filled with constant stupid jokes and bad lines. You sound like someone who is a big fan of the MCU. The MCU is horrible because it goes against its own source material, which actually took itself seriously and was far more dramatic and much better for it. The fact that we can't have fantasy/action films that take themselves seriously anymore because the MCU has brainwashed entire generations to think that the only movies that should take themselves seriously are Oscar-bait movies and everything with action and fantasy has to be basically $200 million comedy skits is incredibly frustrating and sad.

      Of course you do. They are joke-fests.
      "but I’m more of a DC comics fan, and I mean classic fun mixed with serious DC, and not SnyderVerse DC"
      Zack Snyder's movies respected the TONE of the original comic books, which took themselves SERIOUSLY. And that goes a long way. The MCU doesn't respect the source material because they go AGAINST the tone of the original Marvel comic books by turning everything into a joke-fest. So many damn corny jokes that the movies end up being almost parodies of superhero movies.
      The Power Rangers 2017 movie got that tone that Power Rangers should have combined with a fantastic script and a great cast. The problem is they dropped the ball on the costumes and the action, both of which were horrible.

    I had my own idea for a dark Power Rangers movie before the 2017 one was made. It would have gone like this;
    Rita Repulsa is searching for the legendary Power Coins on Earth so she can access the power of the Morphin Grid and resurrect her husband Lord Zedd. Zordon follows Rita to earth and prevents her from getting the coins so she traps him in a time warp but Zordon imprisons Rita and her minions in a space dumpster on the moon. Of course ten-thousand years later two astronauts find the dumpster and release Rita. She confuses her search for the power coins. The coins have each chosen five teenagers to protect them; Jason, Zack, Billy, Trini, and Kimberley. However they are unaware that they possess the coins’ power and Rita seeks them out trying to kill them, but Zordon and Alpha find the five teens before Rita can kill them and explains everything to them and makes them Power Rangers to fight Rita and keep her from getting the Power Coins. Of course Rita would recruit Tommy to be her evil green ranger. I was thinking either Rita found a sixth Power coin that Zordon didn’t know about and gives it to Tommy or unlike the TV show Tommy is selected to be a ranger along with the other five but Rita kidnaps him and brainwashes him to work for her and the other rangers are unaware he’s secretly working for Rita. Unlike the TV show the teens wouldn’t start off as friends before they become rangers but over time they start to become friends. For the characters’ personalities I thought Jason could be kind of a jock and Billy a timid nerdy boy and Kimberley a stick-up cheerleader and Zack an outgoing class clown and Trini a tomboyish environmentalist girl and Tommy a mysterious bad boy. There could be some character development like Jason starts to become more of a leader and think of others and Kimberley becomes less self-centered and Billy comes more confident in himself. Rita would be more a serious villain very cold and calculating like Maleficent. I had this idea for a backstory with Zordon and Rita where they were twins and the prince and princess of Eltar but Zordon revealed this secret she had which caused her father to banish her from Eltar then she sold her soul to Lord Zedd and married him and came back to Eltar to conquer it and she killed her father and took over the planet while Zordon rebelled against her but I don’t know. Maybe a better backstory would have been that Zordon and Rita were both Power Rangers like in the 2017 and they had a romance but Rita betrayed the team to work for Zedd I don’t know. In Zyuranger Rita’s counterpart Bandora used to be a good queen until her son was killed by a dinosaur so she sold her soul to Satan and became a witch who caused the dinosaurs extinction out of revenge so maybe Rita could have had a son who was killed somehow by something Zordon did and that led her to become evil and maybe she treats Tommy like her son I don’t know.

    My idea would be to have the first Phase be the Zordon Era. Start with 3 Mighty Morphan Movies: 1 to start things, Green with Evil, and a 3rd for Tommy to become the White Tiger Ranger. Then go Zeo, Turbo, In Space, and Galaxy. Then start phase 2 with Dino Thunder to end off Tommy's story and show that rangers can form without Zordon. Then go to Light Speed Rescue to establish that other people can become rangers without magic or alien tech, but with human science. Then idk where to go from there

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  Před rokem

      That's very unrealistic with audience retention. You can do three films but for that amount of films, the first phase would span at least a decade. Marvel's first phase only spanned four years. That and it's a huge gamble to completely move onto teams other than MMPR, which is why I suggested dipping into other teams early.
      As someone who works in TV, I can tell you this would get shot down by producers immediately. Sorry if that's harsh but it's the sad truth of it. Which is why we need to find a plan that appeals to fans, general audiences, and the studios making the films.

    I think the most easiest thing to do in a power ranger movie, is skip over the origins story.
    Everyone knows power rangers, regardless of age, the story about how they got their power can be told through dialogue. The most important thing the movie should focus on is the team itself. Just because there power rangers, doesn't mean there a team of power rangers.
    -Jason arc is accepting the responsibility of being the red ranger. He has the quality of leadership that you can see through school, social life, and battle, but he personally doesn't seem himself as that archetype. Out of everyone, he doesn't know what to do with his life; he's decent in school when he shows up, decent as a power ranger because of learning martial arts thanks to his dad, and a decent person to be around. But he doesn't have the best relationship with his father, can't seem to get the leader part down since he doesn't want to be one, nor be a power ranger, and again being a teenager who is becoming an adult, he doesn't have an idea what kind of adult he wants to be. Compare to the other rangers who knows who they want to be, he doesn't have that vision of the type of person he wants to be. But over the course of the movie, we see him grow into the man he wants to be, need to be. He's a man of action, when he needs to use words, he uses it, but above of all else, he's willing to put his life on the line if it means everyone can live. This, is the major reason why Zordon pick Jason as the leader, because just as he can lead the team through the darkest of time, he's the one who doesn't give up, and that spirit, is why his team too doesn't give up.
    -Zack arc involves him learning humbleness instead of arrogance. He wants to be the leader, he's the one being the most expressive and outspoken of the group, and he's also the only one spending time talking to interviewers and people of angel groove. He likes being a power ranger, the attention of it, because he's also very social person in highschool, and whiles he's the loudest in the room, he's the loneliest in the room. Both of his parents passed, leaving his sister to take care of him and his baby brother. His sister isn't always around because she's busy working for him. And while he respects it, he wishes that someone can take that responsibility for, yet, he himself is running away from his responsibilities too. He's not good in school, can't sit still to learn in class, he aches to fight, aches to socialize and party, but in doing so, he's forgetting his baby brother, and hurting his relationship with his sister. He doesn't like Jason, picks on Billy so he can toughen him upm get's ignored by Kim, and Trini tolerates him to a point. Over the course of the movie, he learns to be more humble, caring, kinder, and put more focus in his education.
    -Billy arc involves him coming out of his shell. He isn't a great ranger, using his mind to conquer his enemy by using fire projectiles he design, loves tinkering, great at school, but he's very lack luster in the social department. He's never been good at communication with people his age, its easier with his parents, but others not so much. Unlike the rest of the power rangers, he told his parents about being a power ranger, but they worry about him, question why can't anyone else take up the role, and even try to ground him at a later point in the movie. And while Billy isn't confident in himself entirely, being a power ranger, being on a team, no matter how difficult it is, makes him feel's like he's a apart of something. The likes of Trini and Jason shows him what the team can truly be. Sure, he doesn't get along with Zack at first, nor Kimberly, but again, he gets ecstatic at being a not so good power ranger. Simply because, he's apart of something, he was chosen compare to who else could've of took that place, and he'll follow behind Jason into battle because he, mostly compare to the others, knows what is at stake if he doesn't answer the call. He may not be confident in certain department, but he's brave to want to fight battles that some can't.
    -Kimberly arc involves her learning to sacrifice one thing for the others. Compare to the others, Kimberly has a problem with being a power ranger, in hindsight, it put a stamp on the plans she have going and will go through after highschool. She tries juggle everything at once, even to the point of dropping being a power ranger job just to appease either her parents, or get to class on time. She's a top of her class, leader of cheer leading club, and all around type of girl that does inherently want to help everyone around her, just as to appease everyone's term. It puts alot of stress on her, get's her aggravated with the likes of Billy and Zack, especially Zack who calls upon her bs, and she would try to quit being a power ranger only to have Zordon put down that idea with a quote, "Once a ranger, always a ranger." She also grew up from a family of perfectionist, not bad people, but expects the best above else. So just as she is a hard working person, off battle and in battle, she's a determine person to get everything right on the spot. Like the rest, her arc get's completed, giving up cheer leading, appease people's attention, and focus on what's important, that being get into a good college, and save the world with her team.
    -And now Trini, who out of everyone, doesn't have that arc she needs to complete. She is, the perfect power ranger, one who understands her duties as one, helps the people, and somehow keeps herself situated in school. Her family expects the best of her, but also doesn't force to do things that makes it uncomfortable to accomplish. She has the proper balance of being herself and a power ranger. And because of that, she's the one that brings the power ranger together. From understanding Billy way of talking and giving him more confidence, grooving with Zack, yet not afraid to point out his flaws, competing with Kimberly, yet forcing Kimberly to decide on what she does next so she can understand what's at stake, and to even get very close to Jason through martial arts because she has a background of studying kyokushin that counteracts his shotokun karate. In doing so, she becomes the beacon of light the team need, as her role is define as being the type of person to showcase everyone's true potential then just let it wither in it being untap potential, and uplift those who can't lift themself up. This is mostly because of the family she have, the family she protects, and also aspiring to be the best version of herself that her parents instill into her.
    Obviously, the villain would mostly involve Rita send her lackeys. Second movie involving Tommy, and third movie to wrap it up involving Zed. But this is how I envision the first movie should before we go on to the two later movies, that involves them graduating highschool, and living their life as adults.

      I just read all this lol. I actually like the idea of not doing an origin story. It worked well for Spider-Man: Homecoming, I think it'd work well here. I also like that you've outlined each of the character arcs and even made Trini more complete. That's something lacking sometimes is that it can be okay to have a character who doesn't go through much change but can be a foil or influence on another character. Something Once and Always did very well is use that trait of Trini's to inform her character's differences to Minh's.

    As a small note, the triangles on the shoulders of the Turbo Rangers are remnants from the original Japanese footage of Carranger. Power Rangers was started as an American adaptation of a Japanese show. "Power Rangers" is an American property. It's not a "dub of a Japanese show". The story lines and scripts are very different between Power Rangers and the Sentai counterparts. Also, not all the actors in Power Rangers are American. The actress that actually played Rita was Japanese. Catherine Sutherland (Kat Hillard from MMPR/Zeo/Turbo/Once and Always) is Australian.

    I agree with your sentiments about the 2017 live action movie that the basis for their powers IS limiting. But perhaps if they continued on into the Green with Evil and the Zeo plot lines, we could have explored if the limitations were solely for the Mighty Morphin power coins, or if it was a morphing grid limitation. Or maybe the green coin functioned differently for Rita, cause she was clearly betraying Her and Zordon's team, meaning there was no friendship left between them, so either she shouldn't be able to morph or none of them should have morphed because the team wasn't all together trusting.
    Continuing that thought, the limitation of trust to morph could have been ingrained into their formation by whoever forged these power coins, so if it is with just the MMPR team for trust to morph, then other teams could morph individually. Imagine episode 1 of wild force, all 4 wild force rangers hunting down an org at night but instead of them being an established team of 4 who had been working for a while, they were 4 separate rangers who had been hunting org's believing they were the only one, and all 4 of them meeting and attacking each other allows the Org to get away. Having them not know any of the others exist completely recontextulizes the scene, and then add in Cole and the movie is them getting to know each other, breaking out of their lone fighter mentalities, and having their hunt for this Org only succeed when they trust each other to work together and cover their weaknesses, allowing them to combine their weapons into the Jungle sword and beat it.
    Or if we explore jungle fury as a movie, then their spirit animals that they use to morph could be use as a story beat as Spiritually knowing oneself. The rangers, still Pai Zhuq students wouldn't have the full spiritual understanding of themselves to connect to their spirit animals and morph. Have Jared and Dai Chi be a situation of him seeking to know himself to make this connection, to console his pride and prove he is the best in their class and should be moved to higher lessons, be why he and Dai Chi become one. A consequence of his character flaw and a consequence of knowing yourself, is that he may hate what he sees. They can show off the spirit world like the Wakandan afterlife and the connection is sacred, why only Pai Zhuq masters could morph before and why RJ is so good as their mentor. He has the connection, have him morphing from the start, but have his connection be uncontrollable after long periods because in this universe he feels some disconnect from him being a Pai Zhuq master who left it behind to run a Pizza restaurant, and have the second movie have him console with himself that their is nothing wrong with not being at the temples teaching the next generation in the traditional sense, but that his unconventional way is what made these 3 students of his grow and flourish, that an unconventional teacher still teaches.

      WOW! That was a fun read haha. All great ideas. But as much as I love long speculations as to how things work (I make 20+ minute long video essays on niche PR topics lol), in my opinion it's kind of bad writing for an expansive universe when the fundamentals are best explained with a paragraphs-long text. You're comment is awesome btw, I'm just calling out the film's writing.
      I like the idea you have of the four Wild Force rangers thinking they're the only ones and operating separately. But because of how PR 2017 was written, they're kind of backed into a corner unless they can write themselves out of it.

    I agree that the first film should focus on "Day of the Dumpster" and "Green With Evil" since those were the most important events from season 1. And they need to do stuff for the film that does make audiences want to come back for future films. Especially for audiences who never watched the show. I showed the 2017 film to my family and friends who never watched the show and they were left wishing the sequels weren't canceled because they wanted more. The films need to be written by people who truly understand the material. Fans of the franchise. Kevin Feige helped produced several Marvel movies before he helped create the MCU, like the X-Men films, because of his knowledge of the comics. Superhero movies wouldn't be what they are today without him. Sam Raimi made Spider-Man a great film based on his love of the character. If a Power Rangers film is done right, we could soon get audiences cheering as they watch a Megazord battle on IMAX 3D. We can even eventually get the same hype people had for Infinity War and Endgame. I hope that we will get a great Power Rangers cinematic universe since a new reboot is in the works.

However, had the 2017 Power Rangers been successful, while cliché, they should've done Phases like Marvel and sticked to the structure of the show. What is I mean, Phase 1 could've all three seasons of Mighty Morphin, plus the Alien Rangers mini-series. Phase 2 could've covered the Zordon Era of Zeo, Turbo and in Space. Phase 3 from Lost Galaxy to Wild Force. Phase 4 would be Ninja Storm to Operation Overdrive. Phase 5 would be Jungle Fury to Megaforce, etc etc.

      I mostly agree with that. The phase structure works, but there would need to be some moving around. It worked well for Marvel because they had multiple stories/comics to pull from. PR on the other hand is more linear. I don't think things like Alien, Turbo or Overdrive are gonna bring butts to seats so some rearranging or outright removing may have to be in order. It's not quite a one size fits all approach but with the right work, phases could totally be done.

The reason spandex works for Spider-man, but wouldn't work for a more cinematic version of Power Rangers, is because Spider-man where's his costume purely to hide his identity, the Ranger suits are enhanced, alien power suits used to protect them and give them more strength. How are you supposed to convey that with spandex? I'm sorry, but it looks silly in context.

Because Power Rangers would benefit from taking MORE from its Japanese tokusatsu roots especially when it comes to storytelling. Turbo is the best power rangers movie in my opinion. It has the low budget cheesyness, the zords aren't cgi and the suits aren't redesigned. It has bulk n skull. The fight scenes are decent, has "evil rangers" in tommy and Kimberly. Its the closest to an actual episode of power rangers out of all the movies.

      YES! I think Turbo does really well what the other two don't in that its baseline the most faithful and representative Power Rangers movie experience? Now is it knock-off your socks good? Maybe not, but it's the only one where the direction didn't try to deviate away from what PR is. I think with some different writing and more positive changes, it would've been perfect.

    There's a new movie that came out this year as well. I'm surprised you've not featured it here. I think the 2017 movie was one of the best. It lacked the "cheap-ish" "corny-ish" feel of the of the rest of the series. I enjoyed the show and other movies as a kid, but realized the lack of Lustre as an adult. CGI has advanced a lot and I think the 2017 movie made good use of it. Also had a good storyline, cast, acting etc. However I do agree they diverted a bit too much from the original concepts and designs. The newest movie was just NO. They brought back the original actors and designs and corniness lol. No offense to the actors or the team involved but I stopped watching it half way through. Now the movie about training this kid to part of the already established team while also dealing with a space pirate & her crew.

  • @imawdeeotherside
    @imawdeeotherside Před rokem +1

    I love this video. However, I disagree a bit on the costume section. I agree 2017 was overdesigned with little room to grow. However, no texture or layer of any kind I think it would be bad. The shows get a pass due to the target audience and the budget. Especially early on most of the shows were just ripped right from super sentai because Saban was too focused on the budget. Which worked then.
    Also, just story and lore wise in PR, the suits should be a bit more complex than simple spandex. Even spiderman, black panther, superman, supergirl, flash, etc have some texture or layering if its your taste or not.
    2017 I loved a lot for the actual characters. It was at least trying to add depth to them and not just be teenagers with attitude and powers.
    I still love the old stuff of course, cause childhood. but yeah. anyways my two cents.

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  Před rokem +1

      Fair on the layering but I never said that was a problem. Layering and texture are two separate concepts. Even then, I more specifically say "pattern" and not texture. The reason I stay away from patterns comes from readability.
      Patterns can be very busy and distracting to the eye. Even worse is when the fidelity of the camera quality/video output device (TV/movie theater) is lower, it tends to create distortions. These distortions are called "moiré," which are not very pleasant to look at and for me personally can cause light headaches depending on the pattern. Fun fact, these patterns can be exploited to test the optical effectiveness microscopes by measuring the fringes caused by the distortions in a process called "moiré deflectometry."
      Texture on the other hand is different. It works well because the patterns associated are so small they are hard to pick up unless you do an extreme closeup. That and the patterns they form are more from the light and shadow formed around their physical three-dimensional shape (the threads on a pair of jeans for example). Because that pattern is discerned from a light/shadow, color-wise it's extremely complementary, helping to blend the pattern in our minds.
      Best practice, at least for on-screen, is to go with simpler patterns and designs. I work in TV and it's typically a faux pas to wear busy patterns such as paisley or certain floral designs, think of a news anchor/reporter wearing a suit with a heavy pattern. It's distracting and there's no way to discern what the pattern is without zooming right into the offending shirt/tie. Also not all patterns are made equal, as more busy patterns tend to come in and out of style, while simple patterns tend to stay popular.
      Normally I refrain from going into this much detail in a video but I hope it gives you some more context as to my perspective on it!
      Thanks so much for the comment!

I couldn’t have been more satisfied with it as a kid, and I still love it today. It is fast paced, it captures the feel of the show perfectly, it has nice cinematography, good costume designs, really good martial arts choreography, and a great soundtrack. The only thing that I didn’t like was the cgi Zords. The miniatures they used to create the city at the end looked really good, so it’s a shame they didn’t use practical effects for the Zords too.

    • @mintbari
      @mintbari  Před rokem

      I think you have to take into account the changing standards we have now that the superhero genre has exploded. That and the growing acceptance that children's media can have actual complex storylines and doesn't need to be dumbed down. For the time, I think MMPR the Movie was fine. Still think it could've done a bit more as there were more engaging children's films at the time. But with a modern lens, it's severely lacking in character (the main 6 rangers don't really change or have some sort of growth) and the plot is very basic (retrieve the "great power" and defeat the villain). I think your use of the term "adapted" might not be the right way to describe. MMPR the Movie definitely brought the show to the big screen. But in terms of "adapting" it, there was still room for it do a little more.

    There is a reason why some good people thinks that Marvel did a huge damage on cinema. Most fans can't grasp movies without using Marvel as a measure of what a good story is when the shared universe formula is not the only way. Also, one factor of Marvel's success is that their movies had verisimilitude, the suits where believable (at least until Civil War). Spandex suits looks cool on TV as we watch the shows with a fair share of good will But is not the same for a feature film on hollywood. The MOS suit as all the early DEU suits not only look great, they make sense on a realistic level. Maybe they took the redesign too far in the Power Rangers (2017) movie but I don't think they should be blamed. To me, the 95 ones and the 2017s are both decents elseworld versions of the Zyuranger suits.

      - mostly spandex, for the flexibility and agility that Rangers always seem to have.
      - light Armoring on specific spots like the forearms (where they often block), maybe certain areas on the legs?
