    I have had this osmo pocket since the 15th December. Your review is the most honest one I have seen. I too am p****d off everytime the tutorial videos kick in, should be easy to have a disable option. I have said so in my play store review. I also have trouble framing shots when using slow follow, there is a compromise between steadiness and being able to turn quick enough to catch your subject. I think the "slow follow" should be more finely user configurable.
    When using the pan joypad on the app, it should be lockable in x or y axis because it is really difficult to do a straight left to right pan without accidentally slipping up and down, also the sensitivity of the pad should be user configurable. Generally I think there is a learning curve to handling this device and it may take a few hours of filming to master it.

    I'm so glad to see that someone has finally mentioned the astounding image quality that this thing produces. I've watched plenty of other reviews and in them there are many flaws mentioned but from the very first time I saw the video quality I was amazed that such a small device can produce that level of quality and yet no one is talking about it. Despite its flaws I think I'm about to buy one primarily because of the quality. Thanks for a great review.

    A lot of the points you bring up are things that have held me back from ordering a couple of these... But I'll probably pick up a pair in the new year, because the size and unobtrusive nature of the form factor will allow us to film some great content in places where a Red, DSLR, or even a compact mirrorless would attract too much attention and change the flow of what we are trying to capture. Thanks for the indepth review.

    • @geraldundone

      @Ozpeter Před 5 lety

      @@geraldundone The fact that in effect, it's got a fully articulating screen (thought tiny) is often overlooked. That combined with using the gimbal to keep things straight and flat, means you can use it in flashlight position by your side, whereas with a gopro or the like, you've really got to have it close to eye level. So that helps it be inconspicuous in use.

    I absolutely love mine. I shot some live concerts for the BBC in Glasgow back in January, and at first we started off with 2 Sony FS7's. One of them was locked off at the back with a sound feed from the desk, and the other was roving around the gig, gathering a variety of shots. The producer wasn't happy with the locked off shot, as it was too static and we didn't have the budget for a second cam op. On the second night of concerts, I started shooting some wides with my Osmo, floating through the crowds etc. The second FS7 ($10k) was binned, and we used the Osmo for all the wide shots with a wireless audio feed from the desk to the main FS7. It looked like we had a steadycam on the go, and really raised the production values! If you get the exposure nailed and are careful with your movement, the pictures are absolutely stellar, even in low light scenarios.

    I do prefer seeing the end product being nice (image/video quality first) versus enjoying it during use. I had that (enjoy using it) with the GP5 and GP6 and realized my footage needed so much post processing to look decent that I sold both. Thank you for clearing up something for me, a lot of YT reviewers keep saying that the video quality isn't great and I couldn't understand that ( I kept asking them if they viewed their images and videos using monitors and are they looking at the footage using their mobile devices and none of them ever responded, even asked what firmware they're using and didn't get a response either - unsubbed to a lot of them because it felt they we're pushing the GoPro agenda). This thing captures in 100 Mb/s while the GP7 only does 75 Mb/s. This means it should capture more detail and you confirmed that. Thank you once again!

    Thanks for the honest review Gerald. I do video geology lectures in the field for an institute. These locations can be very remote and backpacking weight is critical, as I am often alone. The ability to place this device in some sort of holder on a tripod (shouldn't be too hard to rig up) and have it track me as I move around a bit while talking, could add a very nice change to the static video I normally have to shoot. May give this device a shot. Audio is recorded separate, so the internal mic quality is no issue.

    • @Ozpeter
      @Ozpeter Před 5 lety

      Pending release of the proper holder, you can use a spring mic clip to hold the camera, and a thread adapter to enable the mic clip to fit a tripod thread - very cheap to do.

    Hey DJI, make something slightly bigger, with a bigger sensor, bigger optics, with proper bokeh, good low light, 10bit HLG, lower bitrate H265 options, better colors, better dynamic range, built-in high quality shotgun microphone with wind-filter, much more stable smartphone connector, take power from the smartphone, built-in mini-jack audio input, and more. Perhaps built-in side flip large bright high resolution touch display (perhaps to be used optionally instead of a smartphone).

    I have read most of the comments and pretty much agree with all. But being a guy who has photographed for 50 years using everything from a 8”x20” view camera to a Leica range finder camera. Quality to me is the most important. I’m trying to learn Premier Pro which is not easy in it’s self. So learning to use this camera and it’s quarks doesn’t seem that bad. If I need real quality with a camera I can use the Cannon 5D MKiii , IF I need water proof use my Sony Action cam. This is the type of review everyone should be doing. I’m subscribing. Nice review Gerard. I used the original osmo extensively for 2 years and totally did away with using the phone. I can see the thing damaging the usb port, it looks very vulnerable. It's so small they should have made it clip to the top of the phone and plug it in with a short cable and just hold your phone portrait style.

    I got the Osmo Pocket as a gift and had nearly the same reactions, most notably I felt that without a phone, seeing what you were shooting (unless merely vlogging) REQUIRED a phone connected, and the weight of the osmo pocket dangling from the port was always disconnecting because I have yanked my charging phone out of the wall when half asleep so many times.
    I picked up a Skyreat aluminum alloy extension clip that allowed me to connect it to my GorillaPod, which means it is offset to the side of the Joby mount, freeing the osmo connection on the bottom. Sounds strange, but the benefit is that I can connect the DJI bluetooth adapter to the bottom. Honestly, if I am doing any timelapse shots, this set up is indispensable - all I am holding now is my phone. I set up the Pod and camera, get it level, then sit back with my phone and control it all.
    Awesome review Gerald!

    Gerald, My ownership of the Pocket has been defined in stages- each one marked by finding one more thing it does, and does surprisingly well. Like several other owners, at first I found it to be confusing and quirky, but further study and experimentation erased most of those concerns.
    The one thing I’d add to the discussion concerns the built-in mics. Someone suggested that they combine to provide an ANR function. I can’t verify that, but if true, that’s great. Perhaps a little EQ curve in post could improve the response quite a bit.
    Thanks for a very inclusive review. Certainly a worthwhile addition to the conversation.

    Hi Gerald.
    How to turn a negative into a positive, hit the dislike button twice :) Best review so far of this camera. Very balanced and only dealing with actual real world scenarios and issues. You've hit the nail on the head, picture quality. For sure, it's not perfect and will take a bit of getting used to but every single camera every made has some sort of issue, be it personal usage based or inherent to its design.
    I will get one but only when the mic adaptor is released and the Pocket proves to be good for audio as this is what could really lift it well out of reach of the competition. It's really refreshing to come across a CZcamsr/reviewer who doesn't get bogged down with all the negatives and keeps an eye on the most important thing, in this case, absolute picture quality.
    Here's another way of looking at it. If someone had shown me well shot video footage from the Pocket, without saying what it was. Then they said I could get that quality in an ultra portable portable camera that fits in my pocket and only costs £329 (UK) I'd be all over it like a rash. Then imagine you buy that camera and find it had a built in gimbal.
    Great video Gerald, have just subscribed.
    Cheers,
    Dave.

The level of soldering under a microscope to come up with something to allow all of those accessories to work together is pretty intense. I enjoy the stealthiness of the Pocket, I walked around a market today and most people ignore it, where phones or cameras draw too much attention. Image quality is indeed quite good, especially in lower light situations. Outside shots will require ND filters as they are choppy in bright daylight., luckily there are already at least 4 manufacturers offering solutions.
    The real miss for me is that Wireless is an external option. Not only does it cost extra, attaching it defeats the purpose of the rather awesome case and pocketability proposition.

If a simple device provides a great image, then I'll use that EVERY TIME over a complicated rig that gives a slightly better look. Hope my answer is clear. To me its a 'keep it simple, stupid' mentality as long as keeping it simple still gives you quality results. Keep up the great work. You just earned my sub

    I've had mine for about a week now...Had many of the same regrets at first & also had problems with initial DJI device registration issues...Was about to throw it into the trash... So I called DJI service...they were extremely helpful...they had to reset my password & got my Osmo operating...Device did the typical DJI automatic software update & all works well...I'm constantly discovering many of the features of this device & the operation & performance of this camera leaves me amazed...My only gripe & personal preference would be to switch the On/Off Camera Feature button location with the Shutter button location...I frequently hit the wrong button & turn the camera off just when I want to take a quick photo...It's called a "Learning Curve" for a reason...Was going to get an Olympus - Tough TG-5 at the time & may still...However, you'll have a hard time prying this camera out of my hand...

    I just got the Pocket 2 and many of the shortcomings have been improved. My dream would be for someone to create a product similar to this but larger - large enough for bigger image sensor and possibly some sort of lens options - mini micro 4/3rd?. Flip out screen.

    Awesome review , super helpful and thank you so much for making a long review of this product i was planning to buy a wide angle lens for my Canon EOS 80D and when I saw this lil osmo pocket it just changed my mind , I mean it's good option that you can get 4k quality ,3 axis gimbal and some good features like focus box etc in this small price range so I think it's better to have one of these rather than buying an expensive wide angle lens.

    I find the Osmo to be a bit too small. I know we are talking about 4K 60fps but for me, I will buy an Osmo Mobile 2 and use it with my Yi 4K and save 160$ CAD.

    Good overall review. As a pro, it has a place as a good backup for some professional still photographers. You speak quickly but concisely. It would take someone twice the time, nice delivery. maybe the manufactures should have asked more people like you concerning the hardware hookups, tripod connections etc. I'll wait a bit and see if a new version is in the wings. Kudos. I wish this thing was available when I was a combat photographer in Vietnam. We used old spring-wound 16mm cameras from WW2.(Filmo 70)

    Very detailed an objective review! I've been eyeing this as the camera to keep in my pack on long rides where a Mirroless/DSLR would start to wear on me, but I think I'll hold off until a few more firmware updates sort things out. Fantastic show from DJI otherwise!

    Great review. About the charging this opens the door for a third party manufacturer to make an external battery pack that fits perfectly to the bottom of the pocket adding extra weight and length to the pocket, they could also add a tripod mount and add a microphone socket too while they are at it.

    The best review of the Osmo Pocket by far. I must confess - I ordered it right away, just because I ... wanted it ;) I have the Osmo Plus, the Osmo Plus (with too must accessories) and the ronin s. Of course I would always prefer the Ronin S with my GH5, but you cannot put it in your pocket ;) Okay - what I think about it? It's not finished. I'm missing too much functions in the Osmo - all the time you need the mobile phone to change the settings. It feels to crazy light - like a toy. And you instantly have the feeling you cannot trust this thing at all. BUT the picture quality and stabilization is really good! With a better firmware it will become more usable without phone. So I will keep it :)

    It is very interesting that most of the negative points seem to be somewhat academic after you actually become a regular user of this beautiful small device. One of the real attractions about being so small is that it’s not obtrusive so people will not stop to stare or make forced smiles. You can catch most people shots in a natural state. That’s not possible with larger cameras.
