UPDATES:
1) The phone connector can be re-attached to the camera flipped around so it fits it in the provided case without protruding through the hole. When I tried this during shooting it didn't seem to fit - but I had the case inverted. I apologise for this error/omission. If this has changed your mind about the camera - click an affiliated link above to purchase it.
2) The photo at 05:22 of the railings was not taken with the Osmo - it snuck into the project folder in error. It was taken with an iPhone X in Portrait mode - hence the weird blurring artifacts.

Hello Techmoan. I just have to tell you that your CZcams channel is total crap!!
@@AnonymousFrogNG interesting. Let us have, say, five specific criticisms
Great video Mat! Always happy to see a new one from you, you should have had a job in TV or radio! Sorry to hear the commenters have been getting you down. With all the crazy stuff happening politically right now, your videos are a much appreciated break from the insanity, thanks for doing what you do!
Maybe the camera module was designed for use in a drone - and has the FOV to go with that?
Anyway, it seems it's a bit overpriced for what it does.
Try updating your DJI Osmo Pocket, you are using a old software version!! :-)
Thank you for a proper review and not rushing for views.
SimulationKris I’m just glad it’s not an April Fools shitpost.
Maybe I’m getting old, but I just find those irritating these days.
@@ShesSometimesDoubleChocolate. idk maybe. I'm just sick of lighting up at the notification for an extra long video from a channel I really like, only to remember it''s the 1st of April so it's probably 30 minutes of BS non-content.
@@Colddirector Its only once a year lol
Yes, it is a good review, but this camera still does not sound very attractive to me. Over 300€ for the camera and afterwards they charge you the price for the camera again until you have all the accessories.
@@terriplays1726 Probably worth waiting for the 2nd generation model with more features, plus it's most likely to be more competitively priced!
Sticking until the end for 19 minutes of uninteresting menu navigation narrated by Techmoan?
HELL YES!
I always enjoy the muppet at the end!
Yes, we should petition for the muppets getting their own dedicated show/channel
James May mode is the best!
The Alpaca/Llama looks like he's having fun with you taking him for a walk lol

Fantastic long-term review. Thank you for taking the time to post this. I’m fascinated by the *idea* of this device, but I do think it was rushed to market in an unfinished state. I do hope for a second generation version that is a complete product. Some things I would look for, and would expect to pay a *little* more money for, would include:
1. Wider angle lens.
2. Inbuilt wireless.
3. External audio support (mic port, support for wireless mic/earbud monitor)
4. “Log” low-contrast, low-saturation video output for color grading.
5. Inbuilt jog wheel or thumb pad for panning/tilting.
6. Forego the direct physical connection to the phone. There should be no need for this in 2019. We have NFC, Bluetooth, WiFi which should all be sufficient for use without direct port connections.
7. Ease way back on the accessories. Make this thing work out of the box really well.
8. Tripod mount at the base.
Ahh, thank you for doing a REAL review! So many reviews are just first impressions without actual experience. I appreciate the time and effort put into this 👍
This man needs to review every tech item out there
For creating high res panoramic images Microsoft ICE (Image Composite Editor) is a really good free tool for Windows.
All you need to do is take a bunch of overlapping pictures at the same exposure, throw them all into ICE and the application will automatically find out what picture goes where. It takes a bit of time to process, especially if you have a lot of images. You can then select between several different projections to get something that looks right for the image you took and crop out a finished image that will have a really high resolution.
I really appreciate this video. I purchased the camera 28 days ago and haven't had much luck producing anything of value. I kept it because I had hoped it was my inexperience, not the unit. This video has sold me on unselling it to the retailer before my return period expires.
Your review was just fine! despite being out of focus a few times, you did great! Thank you for posting.
Thank you for waiting to post this review. I appreciate your thoughtful content production.
I saw every single video on CZcams about the Osmo Pocket, and I missed the one from Techmoan?! No way!
Watching it entirely immediately 😂
Thank you so much for demonstrating the camera's menu and options! I picked one of these up yesterday from my local Costco (they had a deal: the camera + the expansion kit for $430 CAD) and could not for the life of me figure out how to operate the menu. Thanks to you I was able to configure the camera to my liking, and hopefully I will be able to create some great videos with it!
One of the best reviews, It covers everything that I wanted to know about the DJI Pocket, Thanks for the time and effort.
PS: You have wonderful voice.
This was a proper review, no flash crap, just proper! Good job Sir.
Your videos satisfy my tech curiosity at no expense to myself. I highly enjoy them.
That sketch with the muppet at the end went on for much longer than usual!
FYI When taking Panoramas on the DJI Osmo Pocket (and many other DJI Products) the pano image saved to the phone is only a fraction of the size of the source files saved on the CD card. You can download the pano source images from the SD card and stitch them together on a PC using the DJI Media Maker app provided by DJI (just google it for a link) or there are 3rd party tools that will let you create a full resolution panoramic shot from those same files. Also the phone adapter can be reversed so the end that plugs into the phone is stored closer to the camera body during storage. Though you should know this because you get a warning that the plug and wifi adapter can't be connected at the same time. This can is resolved by inserting the phone plug adapter the opposite way.
Thanks for commenting this, if you're just posting a pano to the web then the low res is probably fine but it is nice to have access to the full resolution images, same for timelapses and motionlapses.
Fen totally agree. I can post the phone saves to social media but if I want to print something (ended up printing many labor from my older Osmo Plus) I’ll refer to the source files.
Nice to have found your channel again, i remember i bought my dashcam years ago and its mainly of your review. Subscribed.
Really thoughtfully structured and paced video. Thank you Techmoan.
I have to say, I adore the dark, narrow, fluid video you're showing from the camera! I wouldn't mind shooting a short film on this.
Thank you Mat your nerdiness/enthusiasm is rather contagious and endearing I just joined the dollar club I hope you read this and know my appreciation for your good natured content ..carry-on
2 years later and I have both the Pocket 1 and the Pocket 2, and I love them both. Each has its strengths and is better at some thangs than the other. I mostly prefer the 26mm of the Pocket 1, and much prefer the Pocket 1 Controller Wheel to the Joystick of the Pocket 2 so I have two of them. Love the Extension Pole, and the charging cases. The one thing that DJI has never sold and always should have, is a Z axis stabilizer. Many of them on eBay don’t work very well, but the ones made by Scotty Makes Stuff are fantastic and really make a big difference.
i'd watch this just for the llamas/alpacas :P Thanks for the thorough review, your vids never dissapoint!!
That was great review..
Thank you for taking the time to acctually go through all that
Hello, I just wanted to say you're greatly appreciated by us. Keep on keeping on!
PS: love your muppets!
That December video looks like some sort of first person video game. Quite nice.
We need more long term reviews like these. It is actually informative and useful. Thank you.
Very thorough - I really enjoyed this review! 👍🏻
What an excellent review. Really above and beyond.
Finally, a honest and non-biased review. You're the best!
One of the best reviews on YT. As usual. Thanks for sharing. Would be interested to know how many viewers watched the full vid. Great concept splitting it and tone is good in the last section. Down playing that last bit is a good idea for sure... dont want everyone to know all that cool stuff ;) :0) Would be interested in an update vid and if you use this device regularly and what settings. Looks like you have decent frame rates dialled in. Lots of longevity in this video wise. DJI will no doubt be updating stuff and aftermarket gear will be coming out for years to come! Good luck :)
First five minutes told me to watch complete video. THANKS FOR SUCH WONDERFUL INFO.. I'm in love with my osmo pocket again..
Thank you for your excellent video review, I really appreciate your honesty!
Your review was excellent, thank You.
I appreciate your knowledge I learned so much.
I feel like this product is the result of a lot of compromise and internal struggle at DJI over what their next product should be, resulting in a device that isn't great at any of it's potential use cases.
Out of the box it's too wide to be used purely as a camera attachment for your phone but lacks even the most basic physical controls needed for solo operation. It has a 4k sensor and a lot of prosumer friendly functionality, but lacks an external microphone port and tripod mounting. They have a litany of aftermarket accessories but other than the controller attachment they're all too expensive for how simple and restricted they are, leaving them out priced and sometimes out featured by other companies' accessories.
lol wtf? DJI invented and standardized many of the key consumer quadcopter technologies. Everyone else is copying them. nobody else makes better drones for this market segment. They have many products in production, this is just one for a niche market. @@aserta
I love camera reviews from you!
Something I noticed, you were talking about the adapter pocking through the hole when connected the camera in the case. You can turn the adapter around so it faces the other way, that's why there's a little cut out there. So you just pull it off, flip it around, reattach it, and you're good to go. You're right about it not taking the control wheel or wireless adapter...that's a bummer.
yeah when you can't figure out something as simple as that makes you wonder about everything else the moron says.
I think we've had similar experiences with this, I got mine in Jan and was disappointed, I finally got the expansion kit and it turned up broken.I sent it to them and it came back smashed to pieces thanks to UPS. finally after updates and getting extra parts I'm quite happy with it.
Also exposing dark is a good feature as you don't clip the sky and can have an image with a greater range.
A skillful Alpaca rider I see, his talents have no end!
Love the pictures of our great city.
Smoothest alpaca footage I've ever seen.
Techmoan going out wearing a cap to hide from the paparazzi! :) Great review, too! Nice shots.
Good review, Matt. Kept thinking they came to market a little early, seeing how they keep updating the firmware and adding to the accessories. It's a great concept, but needed further development before it's market release.
Skip to 34:39 if you wanna know more about those 2 buttons on controller wheel addon .
.. except there's no mention of the function you get by holding down the right hand button.
Thank you for an in-depth review.
Great review - very helpful and informative - thanks
Thanks for a great review. You just saved me £350 by sticking with my original Osmo, which after all the add ons is probably not that much bigger
Cheers Matt. I am looking for one of these type of cameras, and I love your thoughts on it.
Excellent informative and helpful review. Thankyou.
Thank you so much for this update, I pre ordered it from DJI, but after the first early reviews I cancelled my order, and decided my Hero 7 would suffice. I am blown away that all the bad points about it have now been resolved, mine comes on Tuesday , and I have already ordered a clip that goes on the bottom, that makes it perfectly flat and has a tripod mount underneath, so I can use all my GP mounts too, £11 amazon :-)
DJI pocket 2 has fixed most of these concerns.
every video that i watch makes me want this, but also makes me realise that two years after release, i have to wait for v2 which must be close
very nice in depth review
Thanks for this very informative video. I am contemplating buying the osmo pocket Ora smartphone gimbal but can't decide as yet.
Can you tell me if it works possible to zoom when the smartphone is attached, also what is the max we card capacity supported?
Does the video transfer from the osmo into the phone we card?
Notice from your videos that you operate around the Wigan area, is the alpaca farm (or are they llamas?) In this vicinity?, I would like to visit it.
Regards David
Thank you so much for the review. It was pretty clear the camera hunting for focus was a source of issue for you. If you can stop the aperture right down say f8, this will give you a much greater focus plane and reduce the focus hunting. Also if you have a wide lens 24mm or wider will also help as wide lens tend to 'get everything in focus'. I hope this helps!
Thanks so much foir this update. Very helpfull.
I enjoyed watching this video, thanks
Great review. Thanks very much.
Awesome review!
Thanks for the review. A question: is it possible to use the Osmo Pocket while charging? I mean for example the Osmo is attached to a power bank and recording at the same time?
Well, my brain is now butter. The footage at the start was like a video game with head-bob turned on with how smooth it was!
Interesting review. I waited for a while before I bought mine as it allowed more accessories to become available. The control wheel is very good and it also gives you a fast mode change which is handy. I got a Ulanzi base for it so it had a tripod mount and could be charged from either side of the base. No problems getting ND and ND+circular polarising filters. Finding my way around the settings took a while but once you get it, you can do more things with it. The 80 degree view angle very well suits what I used it for, I normally use a Sony FDR AX700 for general purpose video but the are locations and places where its too big or inconvenient to use and it here where the Osmo Pocket fill a very useful gap for me that action cameras did not. The video quality is good enough to mix and match with the AX700 footage and can be processed with much the same post methods. As far as the carry case, I found one on eBay that is designed to have the control wheel fitted and it makes the cameras robust and convenient to carry around in a pocket or carry bag.
Your one of my favourite youtbers keep up awesome work
@Techmoan I see quite heavy compression artifacts between 14:05 and 14:10, in those bushes.
Also around the necks of the alpaca's at 8:30-8:34; you can see that the fluffiness of the wool confuses he compression algorithm! :-)
Is that something that youtube does to the original footage, or is that something the camera does?
Great vid, I too was an early customer, totally agreed with everything you said especially about a thumb stick built it etc. Field of view yes limited will be trying a wide angle adaptor but as is pairs up nicely with a gopro.
We’ll see what V2 brings😎
Brilliantly presented, what make is your selfie stick please!
The solution to all the problems you mentioned is a Removu K1. Everything you mentioned that came out as an upgrade or plug-in option is out-of-the-box on the K1. It even has an optical zoom and removable batteries. Wifi, mic input, wider angle lens and a joystick to pan and tilt is built in.
Hey Techmoan,
I appreciate the reviews a few months into owning a product, it means you've taken the time required to live with something for a while before you comment on it. To me, this means that your reviews are more useful as you will generally discover the really, little annoying to live with things about a product. Keep doing what you do.
For the charging case the smartphone adapters are underneath the Osmo and on the side there is space for 2 SD cards
I picked up one of these not long after launch and wanted to add a few items of note from my own experience for anyone who might be looking at this review for a buying decision:
- The phone connector/adapter can be attached backwards, so that the body/handle of the camera protects the connector and so that it isn't sticking out of the case.
- Part of the reason why I wanted this camera was so I could do panning time-lapse closeup shots as I do detailed work, but the first step the camera does when it starts recording the time-lapse is reset the focus. In other words, you can have everything set up and set at the focus you want, but it will refocus too far away to work for what I want. I think I'm a firmware version behind, so maybe this has been fixed since, but I expect my use case is pretty niche, so I don't expect it is.
Great overview, thnx. Have you been interested of sony rx0?
A very informative vid
Thanks very much
Interesting, anybody know if the latest update allows for face tracking with the wireless module?
Also, can I still use the overpriced audio adapter with the fairly overpriced wireless module?
Hi techmoan, will you pick up and review xiaomi seabird?
Be nice to see an updated Pocket 2 review ... It's definitely improved 👍
Can I suggest a review of a stabiliser gimbal for cell phones.?
He has already done one if those. The Uoplay Gimbal
Great video. I have problems that when I'm in selfie mode in video 1080 30 frames on follow mode my face is out of focus however the background is in focus. What am I doing wrong? This is a relatively new peiblem.
Thanks,
Mike.
Also my Date of file is wrong on Savard when I plug into my phone.
How can I fix this.
Thanks so much.
Mat, would you mind sharing where the area near the water is? It looks lovely!
could you do a video on the grundig tk3 Deluxe reel-to-reel player
I have an Osmo+ with a z axis, and I love it
Thank you for this video. This really helped me choose between this and a GoPro Hero 7 Black. I went with the GoPro. Seems to be better suited to my needs. Just too narrow of a shot with this one.
Nice camera and a nice review. I prefer the longer term ownership reviews :)
Hello there so are you still using this camera and what are your opinions about it today how does it compare to the latest Osmo pocket 2? also what about the Osmo action? have you thought about that one because it has everything in focus rather than the autofocus and seems to require a lot less add-ons and is cheaper.
That’s a great idea. Giving the item 4-6 months so updates can take place and get the full review nvm the views at first but when people learn you’re doing genuine reviews and giving it time to find its stride the views will definitely come.
With the wifi module attached, how is the sound quality with one microphone blocked?
Techmoan: a pan is a left to right (or vice versa) camera movement. Up and down is a tilt. I know you will want to know this! Great video as usual.
Looks nice, but I think I am happy I got my Hero 7. Not saying I would not get it, but I am not in a big rush to buy one. I have a Mavic and a Spark, and the camera looks like it's directly off the Mavic. What's the bitrate on it?
A light bulb over my head came on when you talked about being an "out of breath asthmatic". I had always wondered if you were perpetually congested or just what. Keep up the great work!! 👍
There was a video several years ago where he discussed some conditions. I forget if it was a separate video or encapsulated in a review type.
OMG... how bizarre.... I was in Liverpool about a month ago and I think I saw those exact same buskers (and they were in the same location as well). I think they were a group from Ireland called KeyWest. They were really trying to sell their CDs!!! Awesome video, btw!!!!
Me wanty! Another great vid, Mr Moan.
Thanks for the video, good info! How far can you have your phone from the Osmo? I'd like to use this as a remote second camera for event videos like weddings. I'll have my big camera on a tripod, and then hide the Osmo on the alter for views that would be too disruptive if I walked there. Are there any problems with shooting non-stop for an hour?
Range with Bluetooth is weird . I’ve got a Bluetooth microphone that works great at 100 feet. But I can’t find a decent pair of Bluetooth headphones.
It comes with a JJ Abrams filter? (Spotted that lens flare)
very detailed, thank you very much
The alpaca seems to come with its own gimbal for its head! 🦙 Thanks for the review on this camera. I’ve just started looking at this camera and was hoping you had a review because you’re less hype and far more trustworthy.
Great video and review! Where can I find the bag shown at 17:11?
thx for the video, very helpful.
Nice review and all, but damn, those llamas are cute 😊
I have an Osmo Pocket and in reference to the car clip at 15 minutes in, I've mounted mine to my dogs and it was perfectly stable, while singing side to side on their harnesses. I know its not a car, but I am interested to see if it will vibrate the way you had it because I've also used it on rides at amusement parks and didn't have any of those vibration issues either. Though I was holding the camera too. Personally, I don't think I would mount it on anything as I would be too afraid of breaking the gimble by absentmindedly moving around.
Wait you have to register it? What happens when the servers go offline? Can you still use this if you get it second hand from someone
