  • In this All Sports History video we'll look back at the four different venues that have been called Madison Square Garden over the years, as well as why is it called Madison Square Garden?
Here's what this "Madison Square Garden History" video covers:
For over 140 years, the name “Madison Square Garden” has been synonymous with sports and entertainment culture in New York City. There’s actually been four different venues over the years that have carried the “MSG” name, and in today’s video we’re going to look back at how each of those arenas (Madison Square Garden 1879, Madison Square Garden 1890, Madison Square Garden 1925, & Madison Square Garden 1968) brought their own unique experience to spectators. There’s been all kinds of interesting events over the years from all star games, and presidential birthday parties to nazi rallies and even becoming the site of an infamous murder.
We'll also look back at some of the more influential people and events in Madison Square Garden's history, like the Stanford White murder and his and relationship to actress Evelyn Nesbit, the great boxing promoter Tex Rickard and creating the New York Rangers, and the time MSG owner James Dolan kicked out a fan for yelling at him to sell the New York Knicks. We'll also go in depth on the 1 billion dollar Madison Square Garden renovation between 2011 and 2013.
What did you think about a potential Madison Square Garden relocation to another part of NYC? Will Madison Square Garden Move? And what’s one of your favorite memories of MSG? Let me know in the comments below!

@@AllSportsHistory personally I don't think that the city is ever going to rebuild Penn Station in it's current spot. In the end, I can see then just running more track/changing the existing track to be aligned with the old Post Office across the street.

Yeah honestly with the budget fallouts due to COVID-19, I highly doubt the city will be in a hurry to renovate Penn Station again. My guess the entire discussion around MSG moving is tabled for the foreseeable future.

You only missed one factoid. The entertainer who has sold out Madison Square Garden more than any other person was the late World Wrestling Champion, Bruno Sammartino. Bruno sold out the Garden 187 times. The Garden saluted Bruno when his death was announced by displaying the champs photo on the marquee.

I definitely think MSG should remain where it is. It’s in the heart of the city, and it is extremely convenient for anyone traveling from outer states to get to the venue. Also it’s been such a historic sight for so long, it’d be sacrilegious to relocate. We shall see

I used to watch the Rangers at the 'old' Garden - which was really MSG III. Back then you could get in for 50 cents with a high school ID. You got admitted to the side balcony which meant that aside from the first row, about 1/3 of the ice was cut off from view. So you tipped the ushers another 50 cents and they would let you in to the end balcony. My brother and I went every Sunday.

We used to go early for warmup and sit right behind the net and never leave. Back then ole Brendan Bryne Arena would always be half empty. Use to go with my brothers all the time.

It’s a shame that the old Penn station was demolished for a dirty underground terminal and a stadium that frankly is not visually appealing. The old MSGs had a much better look then the current one. It would be much easier to swallow the demolition of Penn if the current MSG was made as a bigger version of the old arenas rather then a concrete circle

The New york Knicks and Rangers would never leave New york City for New jersey. Besides, both teams have many loyal fans in New york City. The games would be a lot harder to get to if they relocate to New jersey. The traffic is terrible from New york to New jersey. The reason why the jets and giants play in new jersey is because the land is cheaper in new jersey for a football stadium and the residents of new york city would not have to pay taxes for a new stadium since new jersey is a different state.

The current Garden will be replaced eventually, even with the renovations, changing technology and the economics of sports will render it obsolete soon enough. As for where it would go...tough to say. It's current site is perfect, on top of all the major rail lines. Unfortunately, the space would be much more valuable with a fully tax generating property over it. Finding a similar site in Manhattan would be very difficult.

The new rebuilt MSG is an upgrade from the previous one, except if you're in the the 200 section. There your view of the scoreboard and the rafters gets obstructed, worse as you go higher, and you feel as if you're watching the game from another room. I can't afford the lower deck seats so I've said goodbye to MSG after 50 years.

Its too small for a city that size, and Penn Station is more important and used by more people. It will 100% be torn down one day, probably within 15 years. I also heavily disagree that it is the worlds most famous arena. There are many stadiums in Europe that are more famous, more popular, and better looking. The name is more famous than the design, not the other way around.

Richard Cameron's proposed a new site for MSG on Harold Square in a building built in the image of the second MSG, but obviously with the amenities of a 21st century arena, though the overall ReThinkNYC plan for Penn Station to be rebuilt to an adaptation of its original form provides for five other sites, though it's worth mentioning that the Harold Square proposal has the rebuilt Penn Station and fifth MSG connected to each other via a restored and revitalized Hotel Pennsylvania.

The NE corner is on 26th St between Madison and Park Avenues, the location of the New York Life building. Still, your video did answer the question why MSG isn't anywhere near MSP. The construction of MSG IV over Pennsylvania Station was the worst one-two punch the City of New York ever dealt to itself. One; a huge architectural jewel of the world was demolished and left Penn Station a dreary sardine can of a transportation hub. Two; Penn Station is very busy and in desperate need of expansion and renovation. It has been very difficult for politicians and executives to negotiate on this project because MSG sits over the station. I think the renovated MSG is a great area. I enjoyed a Rangers game there a few years ago and I know a lot of people would hate to see MSG be torn down. But something has to be done to benefit the city of New York. The reality is, a sports arena can be torn down and another one can be built somewhere else. The railroad tracks at the base of Penn Station can't.

@All Sports History also take it easy on Dolan at the end lol. What I mean by that is don't give him a pass, but that was a real curveball when you got to the end of the video and all it was was shot after shot after shot taken at Dolan. Trust me I hate him too and he deserves the bad press, but this was supposed to be solely on Madison Square Garden History. Talking more about special games and not Dolan would have been more realistic to the headline subject of your video. Also WWE has been a huge role at MSG and you completely did touch on that.
