Dragon Mountain Review, Marineland Arrow Dynamics Looping Coaster | World's Largest Steel Coaster

- Dragon Mountain is the weird Arrow looping coaster at Marineland. This attraction holds the record as the largest steel coaster by acreage as you wind over and through a hill. The ride does a lot of meandering, but it does feature 4 inversions and some fun tunnels. But is it still a good ride?

Those boring sections were meant to have set pieces/landscape features to look at as you passed by. Including a replica of Niagara Falls. None of that stuff ever got built. Thus, those sections seems pointless. The ambition for this ride was something the wallet could not handle.
thanks for commenting that, I was really wondering how those boring sections came to be.
The original plans for dragon mountain were possibly the most ambitious ones for a coaster ever! Bit of a shame almost none of it ever came to be.
That theming would've been incredible had it happened.
Such as what other than the 1/4 replica of Niagara falls? I wonder why they finished the volcano later, and just tore down the replica structure
Can't remember where I saw it but there was a rendering of the original plans with the waterfall. I think it was part of the original press release announcing the ride. It's a great ride and I don't live far from it but have not been in several years, find the park weirdly depressing aside from this one ride.
I really enjoyed Dragon Mountain BECAUSE it’s so weird! It feels a lot like a really fast mine train with inversions. That hike from the main entrance to the coaster is brutal though lol.
It's better than the walk to Sky Screamer!
@@CanobieCoaster Also true lol!
This ride seems like a mix between Loch Ness Monster and The Beast. I think I would love it. It looks like such a unique and great experience.
True!
It’s definitely unique. Might be something of an acquired taste due to its weirdness. Try it out sometime and you might enjoy it!
@@marcjsolis I do want to ride it at some point. It's very unique. I like Anaconda at Kings Dominion, which a lot of people don't agree with, so I think I would really like Dragon Mountain.
@@chargedonpc9989 have at it then! Make a weekend out of it and spend some time in Niagara Falls, Canada and New York. Niagara Falls, Canada is more built up. It’s a full on city with more things to do, such as an arcade, giant Ferris wheel, and better views of the falls from land. The American side doesn’t have nearly as much, but there’s a state park, the Maid of the Mist, and the Cave of the Winds.
@@marcjsolis That would be fun.
I love weird unknown rides like this. I´ve been an enthusiast for almost all of my life and I´ve never even heard of this thing :D I really like the train design too :)
Me too.
Marineland looks like the polar opposite of SeaWorld’s parks. The fact that Dragon Mountain exists blows my mind.
It's a ludicrous park that probably shouldn't even exist haha
It was a hugely ambitious park. But they ran out of money.
Such a strange place.
This ride looks so SICK! I can only imagine how amazing this would have been with the 1/3rd scale falls and the planned themeing.
True!
I will forever remember this ride-it was my first inverting coaster when I rode it on my trip to Niagara Falls in fourth grade.
Nice!
@@CanobieCoaster thank you! It doesn’t look as scary as it did then lol.
"the faded brown track isn't exactly appealing to the eye" ... you are so very diplomatic and kind lol!!
As others have mentioned here, this ride was never finished. The coaster was supposed to run through a full replica of Niagara Falls, among other things. Arrow made the coaster to their specifications, but the park never finished the theming.
I wish all that theming had been added.
The only time I saw Dragon Mountain operate with all three trains was the first time I rode it back in 1989. I visited on Labour Day Sunday (September 3rd) and the park was fairly busy. I remember the line for the ride started at the entrance of the dragon's mouth.
Wow so not in a long time.
@@CanobieCoaster I have only visited Marineland three other times since 1989 in 1990, 1999, and 2010. Those three other times I visited it was one train.
The setting is incredible.
Sure is.
This looks like the Beast of arrow loopers to me. Long, sprawling layout with an awesome setting. Often not whole lot going on during the ride, but the high moments are very high
I agree.
Neat and fun looking.
It is.
It would be really cool to see more bow ties on arrow coasters
Arrow no longer exists
@@SashaVibez it would’ve been cool is what I meant
@@Ochocinco_Edits I remember collaborating with friends online on this coaster site for no limits and made an awesome huge arrow looper in a tropical setting it was glorious and gorgeous: I can make one on planet coaster soon and upload it. Try to remember from scratch.
@@SashaVibez Chance could pull it off, the Hyper GT-X model is pretty much a modern Arrow looper
Or more Arrows in general.
1:09 i don't think I've ever seen concrete footers so tall and being the primary support. Wild. Arrow cheaping out id assume ha
@Arrow Dynamics Inc. Sure they were, from time to time. They did a lot of things that they knew could be done better (at one point or another) but kept doing it because it's how they had always done it. Maybe that's not cheap so much as stuck in your ways. But like, their support structures for instance. Super cheap application of the concept of supporting a structure. Simply because they didn't want to change how they did it, and I'd assume, invest in new machinery and talent. And they did it that way until their last coaster with only a few outliers. Drachen Fire, Wild Mouse... Tennessee Tornado. Their re-use of the same inversions (in terms of dimensions/size) over and over for decades. That was because it was simply cheaper and easier to make the same vertical loop or corkscrew and not vary it's size or foot print. I don't think they like, were cheap to the point it was detrimental to their customers and riders though.
It's smooth though.
@Arrow Dynamics Inc. We can agree to disagree. I get what you're saying. Risk is part of the business. They were taking plenty of risks with new coaster models and even track (suspended, why did they never use this track style right side up?) just never made it the norm. Risk is what got them where they were. There's no way cost didn't play a factor in their decision to stick with how they always had done things because it worked and was still selling. Not foreseeing that would catch up to them. I view that as being cheap and I guess, arrogant.
My understanding is Ron Toomer and others said once Arrow was sold from the old railway company that it became ALL about money money money and not the customer. I can agree it's saving time and resources and not risking everything. That basically sounds synonymous to being cheap; to me. Being stuck in your ways. With a dash of arrogance and being on top for so long.
I'm not talking price wise really. They could have sold the coaster for the highest price in town and still made good profit because they were being cheap on how they manufactured and designed the coasters. Still building by hand into the early 90s, still designing by hand in the early 90s, still using same cookie-cutter elements, still using 30 year old support structures in the 90s, all of this is being cheap in the decades prior. Sure, it worked and sold and was enjoyed but; You can be a "cheap" company and still the most expensive in town. And yeah, they did start changing, but it was too late. If they had invested some of their profits into these systems... 5-10 years earlier like they could see B&M was doing, for instance, they wouldn't be bankrupt and non-existent
nowadays likely.
Thanks for giving us your review. I’ve thought this was an interesting coaster at an odd park. Don’t know if I will ever ride it but if I can make it to Canada’s Wonderland, I’ll try and stop by there.
It's truly one-of-a-kind.
I love this coaster. It’s actually probably the best coaster in world for following the terrain so closely. Even the lift hill. I don’t know of any other big coaster the follows the terrain so closely.
The giant hill this coaster is built on had to be man-made. All of the land around it is flat as a pancake
The station entrance looks fantastic and feels fantastic inside. Like you are really in a cave.
I view it as an awesome mine train with loops. I love mine trains so I like drawn out sections.
I don’t really care for arrow inversions as they are too tight on top and whip your neck. So for me the inversions are the only negative part of the ride.
Both tunnels are simply amazing. They are true tunnels, not just wood walls.
I love the way the helix builds up speed then spits you into the first tunnel.
But the second tunnel is simply one of the best roller coaster experiences in the world. Diving down the drop, picking up speed into total darkness. The shallowness Of this drop only adds to the experience as it keeps you in the dark longer picking up speed. It’s what Tennessee tornadoes the first drop should’ve been instead of flashing you with a camera.
The best low cost improvement they could make to the ride is planting some trees along the section that was supposed to be the waterfall.
The park website currently says this coaster is closed again. I was planning a trip in Canada in August and I’m very disappointed if this is it going to be open.
This park is worth a visit if you like unique rides. There is Dragon Mt, the only Huss Magic that I am aware of in North America, and the new Zierer star shape. Plus a Huss condor (that is also currently advertised closed). There is a second huge hill in the center of the park with the drop tower on top.
I never realized that hill was manmade! Dragon Mountain and Sky Hawk were open last week.
My first looping coaster, 1985.
Nice!
Looks fun to me!!! I love long rides and this seems to mix things up a lot. I give it a 6.5 lol
It's so weird.
this ride feels like a mix of orient express and the beast
It does.
I don't know why I got recommended but I am not arguing very interesting too watch all the way through.
Nice!
This seems like the US version of the ultimate from lightwater valley
Arrow was American, but this ride is in Canada. It's Canada's longest coaster, followed by _Leviathan_ and _Behemoth_ at Canada's Wonderland.
Fair!
I think Dragon Mountain is Canada's 9th best coaster. Do you agree? Put your comments in the comment section.
I have a video ranking them.
@@CanobieCoaster Thanks. I'll watch it again later. (I noticed I've already watched it but I can't remember your rankings.)
This coaster doesn't look like a great one, but it certainly is unique and quirky. Ever since I learned of Dragon Mountain, I've been curious to experience it. I have heard that the original plan for Dragon Mountain was quite ambitious. I think at least one of the less interesting parts was supposed to go through a replica of Niagra Falls and other over-the-top theming was planned. That may explain the weird layout. I would love to see what it could have been. There's a really intriguing video by Bright Sun Productions about this park. It's had some controversy.
I wish that theming was added.
A hidden gem in one of the most empty parks in the country. But it serves not bad as the only one at the park. It's a lot like Lock Ness, an Arrow Looper with a very terrain like layout that goes out into the woods and everything. The downside is that it gets so slow at the end cause it's just long turns going through trees and stuff. But I am interested in the world's only Bowtie. Iv experienced a Batwing before but it must feel so cool switching directions when in it.
It feels pretty similar to be honest.
Hey, Canobie Coaster! This is the park's latest roller coaster!
Sadly
Nice
Indeed.
Please make more marineland videos its the funnest videos ive seen from you
All the videos I intend to make are out.
Not gonna lie I do want to experience this one day. Mainly because it's so strange
It's one of a kind.
I really wanna go to Marineland, if only for the fact that you can ride Dragon Mountain for basically hours without any lineup.
Once it opens (it seems to open late from recent reviews).
I know Marineland is a very weird theme park but I think dragon mountain is the only thing I like about it and I wouldn't mind if it had inversions in the tunnel because it would feel like being on backlot stunt coaster when it goes inside the tunnel
Inversions in the tunnel would be neat.
This is one major classic Arrow that I hope to ride someday. I’ve never visited Canada and this certainly gives me reason to!
It's unique.
This coaster seems like a fever dream lol
The entire park does
@@S.J.C._Entertainment hahaha it literally looks like a park I’ve frequented in my dreams all the way back as I can remember
It's so weird.
Comparing it to the Beast is probably not fair to either. The point of the Beast is that it's all about the discipline and the delayed gratification of building up to that powerful helix finale. Dragon Mountain just meanders.
I think both do meandering though. I agree Beast culminates in a great finale.
Well I do like the Bow Tie element though.
And what was Ron Toomer's thought process with this one?
That element rides well.
See in RCDB:
Dragon Mountain at Marineland Theme Park
Flight Deck at Canada's Wonderland
I put those two coasters because they are located in Canada and have inversions. I think Flight Deck looks like a thrilling ride because it is a Vekoma suspended looping coaster, so what would you think about the two to ride again?
Both are thrilling. Only Dragon Mountain is tolerable.
If you have ever played Planet Coaster you might know that you can ajust the friction of rollercoasters, this ride has no friction, it defies physics.
It uses the terrain sneaky well.
It's a shame this coaster never met It's full potential by never being finished. I had fun on it when I rode it decades ago.
I know!
Without the theming that was supposed to be built, it is very barebones, but it's also cool to just be in the middle of nowhere and by yourself without anything else around you. Also, this might just have the prettiest Arrow looping coaster trains in the world. There is actually some cool theming, whereas with other Arrow trains, it's pretty standard without theming at all.
The cancelled theming sounds amazing.
Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You
Lol
Interesting.
Yes
Never seen this one before
It's unique.
This looks like arrow took a mine train and added inversions
Sort of!
As a young teen, I remember riding thus and wondering if we were just going to stop somewhere, still not sure how it makes it.
It uses terrain well.
Extremely well
I hope I go to marineland someday Just to ride dragon mountain cause I know Marineland is not that great of a theme park but I do like dragon mountain I think it's the best roller coaster at Marineland
It's the best coaster there. Sky Screamer is the best ride.
Could you make a ranking every ride at Marineland that you went on video?
Down the road, possibly.
It was such a disappointment for me to not get to ride this when the park decided not to open because of a fleeting drizzle. I know it has flaws, but it's an Arrow, so I'll love it. I love quirky rides too.
This park claimed they ran rides in the rain, but I was skeptical.
I think dragon mountain is pretty cool I don't really know what hangtime means but I do know that on some inversions your just pushed into your seat it feels like going straight ahead but upside down
Hangtime is when you lift out of your seat while upside-down due to a lack of speed.
@@CanobieCoaster oh wow but at least the roller coasters with inversions have harnesses to keep you safe
I think I would like this, just because, I’m starting to realize I get nauseous easily now…
It does have breaks built in.
@@CanobieCoaster ok
4:10
Looks familiar lol
Lol
Yeah you know to me sky screamer looks like a thrilling version of the CN tower cause you can see it from miles away just like the CN tower
Sky Screamer has the drop though.
@@CanobieCoaster oh yeah the CN tower doesn't have that
Marine land has a great layout for being one of the best parks ever. If somebody bought it and populated it with rides.
I can dream.
@@CanobieCoaster how about California land where half of the coasters are sbno, a quarter of them are running but in very bad condition, and one quarter of them are the most beautiful amazing coasters to ever be created bit to ride them you have to pay 1000 dollars each ride. Also fir half the day all the power in the park goes out because people all charge electric golf carts at the same time and the parks grid can't handle it. And the last part instead of entertainers you have homeless strung out on opioids deficating on the walking paths and asking park guests for money. Then you go to speak to the parks manager to tell him that somthing has to change that this park is a living hell and the manager says "you know I completely agree! What we need is more electric golf carts, I will raise the ticket prices by double and we will buy thise new golf carts asap!! Thanks for bringing this up. All these new electric golf carts are sure going to help the environment of the park"
Why would they use so much space for that?
Space is not an issue for this park. They'll never run out.
Its currently down a day has been for over 1.5 yrs parts are impossible to find
I rode it 2 weeks ago.
@@CanobieCoaster that’s awesome we just went 2 weeks ago too and it was shut down for most of the season and they didn’t have an eta when it was gonna be fixed again. The huge chain was brown for the lift hill and they had issues sourcing the parts
This coaster is really slow, it would be a really great ride if there was an actual real drop at first after the Lift hill
I think the first drop is good.
Everest has bad pacing they said... You don't even go fast until the second half they said...
I don't mind Everest's pacing since it's so well-themed.
@@CanobieCoaster That's how I feel. What I'm saying is that people complain about that coaster's pacing while this one literally crawls through some of its elements.
Imagine if you get stapled on a 5,000 ft long arrow coaster... would not be fun
I usually don't get crushed on these.
