  • In this lesson, I discussed the benefits of listening to improve both your English fluency and accent for your call center job. I also explained why it's the technique that all non-native English speakers should focus on above reading, writing and studying the grammar rules.

Even tho I have been here a long time, sometimes I do still have an accent but everyone does especially those who’s from the down the south. Remember writing is different from speaking. Not the same. I very much agree. I've always been ahead in English compared to my classmates even since we're in grade school. When writing essays or doing oral recitations, i noticed that the difference between me and them is that I just casually speak it while they try to translate every single word then patch them up to form a sentence. I guess the factor that made the greatest contribution is that I grew up watching English movies and listening to English songs. Listening really helped a lot, it felt like the language just naturally grew on me over time.

I find this vlog really helpful, especially for me that is very afraid to express how to speak fluently in English. So thankful to have people like you that inspire many other people who don't speak well in English like a native speaker. I guess that I will follow those tips of yours in order for me to somehow overcome my weakness and to achieve my goal of having a chance in a job like call center.
P.S. Not so confident while doing this comment.

Thank God! Throughout my searched on CZcams for years, Now I found the right one secret on how to improve my English grammar. Before I was quiet hesitant about this principle on LISTENING on Effortless English by AJ, however, I’m now convinced that listening is the most effective way to learn English easily. Eureka! Thank you Ma’am for your passion and concern about those who are English learners like me. God bless you.👍👍👍

Yep. Spot on and same thoughts here before I even watched this video. Schools have heavy emphasis on reading, writing, and grammar over learning to speak a language. When I worked as a call center agent, my first call trainer at my first call center job helped make my English speaking skills better. A big thanks to her for making me more confident in speaking in English and helping me neutralize my accent.
There's nothing wrong with not having an American, Canadian, or British accent. However, we Filipinos when speaking can end up committing miscommunications. E.g. "I saw a bat" might end up sounding like "I saw a butt". Most Filipinos can't distinguish the difference in the pronunciation of the two. Also words like "tree" and "three", "to", "too", and "two", and so much more.
Personally for me, learning to listen well to differences in sounds of words and being able to speak better English is slowly but surely helping me in my journey to learning other languages. I am learning French and recently, trying to go for Chinese. Chinese is so tough with its tones especially when your listening skills aren't that good. But a big thanks to being a former call center agent which greatly honed my listening and speaking skills and utilizing the different parts of my mouth in speaking like the palates, jaw, tongue position, etc. which will be helpful in learning other languages that are more challenging to speak than English.

I work as a warehouse associate in a warehouse in Canada and got promoted a year after to the operations supervisor position, pretty much overall responsible for warehouse operation and here’s the thing! I am the only person in colour, a non-native English speaker with a noticeable Filipino accent in our warehouse.
My boss said don’t limit yourself, aim high you can be a branch manager when I retire.
My problem when I reach that branch manager position is that I will be handling client meetings most of the time, meeting with General managers and the company president.
    It sounds scary!
I need to improve my English immediately.
    Thank you!

Absolutely!. I learnt French too through listening. At first, someone taught me, one on one, but she gave up because I couldnt learn, the prononciation was just too hard, so I gave up. But when i started to listen, i started to talk until I became fluent in it☺️. Native french speaker were even amazed and telling me, " tu parlez tres bien francais, huh" where it means "you speak very good french, huh'. Theres a lot of filipino there, eventhough, they learnt french too, they just couldnt pronounce it well. So I believe, through listening, you will learn faster, and it will make you fluent. So try it, guys. It wont fail you. Just keep on listening then practice it, and you will be fluent in it too.

Edit: actually, I decided to download your mock call videos and convert it to mp3 and listen to it over and iver again. Thank you for your videos Ms. Shiena❣️

Before I came across this new video of yours, I was actually planning to save your old videos and convert it to mp3 for me listen to it because I really love how you pronounce each word. You sound a lot like a native English speaker to me, which is my goal, too.
And everything that you have said on this video is making a lot of sense because I had this one subject before during my early college days that teach us how to speak english fluently, and I have to say that you and my teacher says almost the same thing about learning the language that listening is really important in acquiring a certain accent - that it is really different from reading. Also, he was the one who advised me to save english videos and listen to it as if it is a music. In addition to that, he mentioned as well just like you about repetition and consistency. ❤ So I'm going to give you a thumbs up for that.
