Remember many many years ago as a lad owning an old single barrel hammer folding .410 it had a very long barrel at least 30 + inches , I was given literally a bucket of 2inch ely .410 cartridges by an old farmer in our village , I shot about 30 & decided they were pretty useless , one wet afternoon I opened one & tipped the number 6 shot out & thought about loading a ball bearing in it , then looking through some draws in the shed I found a box with I presume were various fishing weights & soon found some that fitted the .410 cartridge , thinking about wadding I decided to use hot candle wax , lit a candle & poured some in followed by the spherical weight then more candle wax , found enough shot to load 30 & could wait to try them , to my surprise they worked very well but accuracy was not good using just the bead foresight , later made the addition of a rear ramp sight off of an old air rifle , sawed about 5 inches off of the barrel & fitted the bead foresight off of the same old air gun , cut down to about 26 inches then back to testing , soon hitting an old paint tin at 100yards with the ball going clean through
Fantastic video! Can’t wait to see the long distance one. Thanks again for trying out all of these .410 slugs. They are so expensive and rare it’s hard to do on your own.
Great video Buckeye! I've shot a variety of .410 slugs our of my old H&R single shot. The Winchester 2.5" always shot the best the Brenneke shot real well but the Winchester's worked best from my 410. , ...now I cannot find much of any 410 slugs. Thanks for your video!
Great test, appreciate the shoutout!!
Appreciate the slugs!
They all are looking pretty good 👍 👌 thanks
Energy isn't the only consideration. There's a video of someone shooting Brenneke slugs and rifled slugs into ballistic gel. The Brennekes penetrated well and didn't expand much. The rifled slugs only penetrated about 3 inches, and the fragmented.
That was close range, but true. I saw that and it blew my mind. I thought it was a little further than 3" though...
Incredible! I'm impressed with the accuracy from the American ammo. The Breneke slugs will be the ones to penetrate best especially at close range. The Win & Rem slugs will generally fracture at very close range and not penetrate well but at long range maybe they will do well. Never saw a long range gel test on a 410 slug but that may be a good idea
It's a far cry from rifle accuracy (as expected), but these all certainly blow the previous slugs out of the water on not only accuracy, but power as well. I too have wondered about if the foster style .410 slugs will hold together at longer than close range- I've seen how they squash and fragment in gel close range. Something I hope to test...
Forget Winchester ammo
I've always liked the brenneke's too.
Thanks for the video. I have the same Stevens 301, using a cheap red dot with cylinder choke, for slugs. For me, the Brenneke wins in mine, hands down. Hitting consistent 3 shot 2.5 - 3 inch groups at 48 yards. And that is just from kneeling, no bench. I just wish I could FIND ten boxes of them.
Compared to my results with a scope at 40 yards, that's awesome shooting with a red dot at 48. I tried to get the cylinder bore choke but they were out of stock everywhere I looked.
At 50 yards this would seem to be a good option for deer. A youth or beginner would benefit from this set up and any of these slugs. Thank you.
Just don't hit the shoulder with any other than the Brenneke which maintains it's shape, as the others "splash" on large bones if you're familiar with the term.
The Rossi .410 I once owned love the Winchester standard 2 1/2 inch Slugs that were available for many years. Not certain about their weight etc! But at 80 metres those things were amazingly accurate. After finding that out I went wild boar hunting in swamps with it. Breech was relatively loose, not dangerously, id pull the trigger guard to open the breech the shell would pop out, I'd load the next and keep shooting. Got 3 in about 20 seconds with that old gun! Was great fun and proved itself very effective. I wouldn't want to stand in front of one of these at any range. Be interesting to see what damage they might do if held up at a crazy angle out to 1000 meters.
My Rossi youth model with a modified choke groups them good enough for 100 yard shots with the bead sight- I was blown away.
Youre the 410 slug king!
😁
I treat all ammo ( Especially 22 Long Rifle / 22 Magnum) gently.
No dropping, slamming, tossing around.
But then again, i'm like my ammo, Special . . .☆
7.49 on the video.
Accuracy is there !
I just grabbed 10 boxes of Super x 3” slugs offline for about $6.80 a box because they’re rarely available in my area
What website?
@@BuckeyeBallistics targetsportsusa dot com- I have a membership so I get like 10% off and free shipping on everything. They’re one of the very few that ship to me. Got a case of 700 rds of 7.62x39 Barnaul for like $257 as well, needed to stock up in that :) spam cans last a long time

I woulda to can't hardly find 410 or 16 here
Amazing Rifle 👍🇩🇪
Excellent results at 40 yards I'd say. Only USA-made ammo is capable of achieving that but unfortunately it's in short supply and a box of 5 rounds would be at least 8 bucks nowadays. I admire you in pushing the limits of the .410 slug and am looking forward to that video. Thanks and God bless.
Glad to have you aboard
When you look at the brenneki ballistics and jell tests. Nothing else comes close.
I also wanted to ask if you have heard of b&p .410 home guardian slugs they are 3" 5/16oz 1800 fps rated. I picked up a bunch when I just couldn't find any brennekes and was getting desperate. The are Italian made and all I can say about them is that the box is fancy looking, cause I haven't shot any yet.
No but I think I have seen their birdshot before. After my experience with all the other imported slugs, I'd wager they are probably crap. The Barnaul were the only ones so far that shot worth a damn for me that weren't Win, Rem, or Brenneke.
What scope is that? Love the set up great video!
EZSHOOT or CVLIFE 1-6x24 LPVO, can't remember which. I have a review video of each in the "Parts Accessories & Optics" playlist with links.
I was REALLY impressed with the close range (7 yard) performance of .410 000 buckshot for defense against bears. The 000 buckshot at that range is still lined up in a row. Penetration is "crazy" effective even though the velocity is low.
Low velocity? Winchester 000 buck is 1300fps in .410, 12 gauge 1325fps...
@@BuckeyeBallistics well sir, Paul choreographed them at ~ 900 fps and I will attach what Federal list as their velocity for their premium 000 .410 load.
Shot Size: 000 Buck
Muzzle Velocity: 850
Those are handgun velocities, not shotgun. You know there are handguns that shoot .410 shells right, and that Federal make rounds specifically for them?
Havent watched it all yet, but can't beat the Winchester standard. Although I do use the Bernakes in 12 ga. For deer. Just as good.😊
Jelly of that big box of candy. Om nom nom nom
😅
I'm suprised and impressed...
I have not seen any on the shelves for years
I really would like to know where. Did you get the Brenneke slugs from? I can't find there anywhere around here.
As stated in the video, a (out of state) buddy found them for me- he got them from a local no-name gun shop. I still can't find them either, online or local...
Remember something people not every gun shoots the same brand slug the same find iut what slugs are most accurate in your gun
What choke did you use? I have the 301 turkey version but cant shoot slugs out of it. I've looked online for what slug choke to use and found nothing.
Short invector
what chock are you using
Try using a rifled choke tube
Could you send me a link or point me in the right direction to getting the choke you are using I have the same model of shotgun as you
amzn.to/4aCKyT9
I had some of those BPS ones as well, I hope they’re not junk. I got them because they were cheap
Well, you saw the last video lol- not good. But maybe through one of your .410's they will do better.
@@BuckeyeBallistics maybe mine will work better in my full choke .410? If not, maybe I’ll break them down and melt the slugs lol. Or I’ll try them in my Governor.
That's only if your suspicion of them being under sized is correct. What it they're oversized? Would be cool if you included it in the video, cutting one open and measuring the diameter... surely you're going to make a video?
@@BuckeyeBallistics be happy to. I’ll cut one of each slug I have open and measure them all.
I’d like to do some longer range tests with 4 pellets of 000 buck once I get to the range again. I have so many things I need to test/try out, I never have enough time when I do get to the range.
Where did you get your choke. Trying to find one for my 301
Amazon or Midway. I had to wait until they had the one I wanted in stock...
how did you get so much Bernneke ammo? I've lived in three different states in the last couple years and can't find on box of 12ga or 410.
Networking. I can't ever find the .410 either, even online- unless I want to pay $3-$4 per shot on a certain auction website and even then it's hard to find. Friend of mine in another state, their local shop had them. I couldn't believe it either...
have 1 store chain in my area that handles the brand. had to head to the store out in the boonies to get some black magic for bear in the camp gun. also found some green lighting & the new orange lighting. curios on the topas. these look like setup for fully rifled barrel. by the way all in 12ga.
What’s the choke setup your using. I’m having a hard time trying to find a actual answer on what choke I should probably have in so I don’t blow my threads out
Was stated in the video but I.C. Less choke is better with slugs, but cylinder bore, skeet, and I.C. are all fine. You can get away with modified but accuracy will suffer slightly.
On a .410 you can use any choke. Yes that's correct. The "fins" on a foster style slug do not actually make the slug spin stabilize, they're merely axrush zone when passing through a choke. On remingtons box it says right on top "may be used in Any choke"
@eduffy - He implied that he has interchangeable chokes. Since he has the option, there should be no reason for him to use a modified or fuller if he doesn't have to, as accuracy will suffer. I have tested the effect different chokes have on slug accuracy before (video).
@@BuckeyeBallistics yeah but to each gun it's own. I have a fixed full on a shotgun and that thing can dang near stack slugs one on top of another at 50yards. Just gotta play around and see what it likes best.
I have single shot 410. Im looking for a red /green dot tube style optic with a quick detach mount. Im not having much luck
Dagger Defense DD22M1 Quick Detach Red Dot Reflex Sight Scope- Reflex Sight Optic and Substitute for Holographic red dot Sights a.co/d/92JfBc1
@@BuckeyeBallistics thank you. Why wouldnt amazon bring up that when i searched for red dot with quick detach mount?
You're welcome. I've noticed myself that amazon doesn't always do the best job of showing you exactly what you want. I learned a little trick though, which I employed here to find this- seach for it on google. Usually google brings up several amazon links for products when you do a google search, which is exactly what happened and how I found it for you.
I would like to know more about your scop mount.
The rings came with the scope- for more on that, check out the Parts Accessories & Optics playlist. The picatinny rail/mount on the shotgun came with the gun- for more on that (review video), check out the .410 playlist.
THANKS@@BuckeyeBallistics
Is that barrel rifled or is it smooth bore that's the big question there.
Smooth
Where did u get the gunsmith for the scope?
Huh? This shotgun comes with the rail for mounting optics.
How are you able to get so much 410 ammo I can’t find any
Paying premium prices and shipping buying online...
What kind of gun is this looks like my steven 301 410 turkey gun i got
Was stated in the video...
Brenneke is the only shotgun Slugs I use
I never see them here. Rarely I will spot the cheap 12ga K.O. slugs, but that is it...
Where can I find this choke?
Amazon or Midway when in stock and other places too I'm sure. I think Carlesons may sell them direct also...
I spoke too soon.😂😂
Yup
do you remember the part # for that choke ?
17742
Can’t find the brenneke in stock for the life of me.
Yup, unless you want to pay $3 per shot like I did. Even then, still rare as a unicorn...
what choke is that in the gun
Was stated & shown in the video...
Are you going to shoot or just talk?
Most of those equal dead deer
I'm pretty sure is that legal to deer hunt with a 410
Depends on your state laws. There are several states that allow .410 for deer hunting- popular choice for those who can't handle a lot of recoil in states where rifles are not legal. They even turkey hunt with them now with special ammo...
Minnesota and Iowa all day long
Something that amuses me is using ounce weight to refer to slugs. It's absurd.
1 ounce = 437.5 grains which everyone understands. 1/2 ounce is 218.75 grains. That's a more easily understandable metric for most firearms folks. That's a heavy .357 or a light .44, so let's go with those more easily comprehensible figures.
I'm just telling you what's on the box brother. They measure the shot weight with ounces too...
No it's not, much less power.
Oml less talking it’s like listening to my gf
Accuracy will be less as the barrel heats up.
Pretty sure I stated numerous times that I was letting the barrel cool between groups...
I dare say that rifle is capable of much better groups than that. I stalk it up to user error.
Um, it's not a rifle lmao.
$15 worth of Breneke slugs shot and you can't afford a new target for each round?
I don't think you realize how expensive those targets are. And yeah- I don't have any money left because I had to buy all these slugs to make this video happen. By all means, feel free to leave a superthanks to buy me a pack of these targets so I have more to be wasteful with like you want. Maybe if people gave back a little after us little guys spend all this money to give you this free content, we would have more resources. Until then, please excuse my horrible sin of being poor...
TIMES ARE TOUGH RIGHT NOW WITH BIDENNOMICS...
In a survival situation one would get closer than 100yards. To ensure one doesn't waste ammunition, and the game does not get away, unable to be tracked..🤔
In a survival situation, you may starve to death when the animal runs off because it saw you trying to get closer to it. I like how you think it will just stand there and wait for you to shoot it at whatever distance you choose...
@@BuckeyeBallistics you have to track down your game. Even if it runs off. The skill of the hunt..
You realize you're talking to a hunter right? Not one single deer I've shot needed tracked because they dropped within eyesight because I am a marksman and know how to place my shots on game. Funny you mention SKILL, because skill is what I have which is why my deer have never needed tracked. Regardless, none of this changes the fact that you greatly risk the animal hearing or spotting you if you try creeping up on it closer than 100 yards. With all the brown squirrels I've had to find against the brown leaves and never lost a single one, I'm sure I can find something dead that's 1000 times larger that kicks up leaves everywhere it runs. But you go ahead and think you're going to sneak up on it 50 yards closer in crunchy leaves without it taking off on you...
@BuckeyeBallistics going hunting for a weekend is far and pales in comparison to a survival crisis. The hunt does not begin and end with a shot from a firearm. Hunting in ideal conditions has fed the ego....respectfully
I'm done agruing with you bud. Everything I said was true and I stand by my position. Have a great night 👍
Do they make a 410 with rifled barrel?
No
Woohoo!! ❤️🩹❤️🩹
Im gonna swap red dot to LPV scope
I know the perfect budget brand and a guy who reviews and uses them... 😅
what chock are you using
I.C., stated in the video...
