    00:00 Introduction to Raphael's Necktie Collection
    The tie is often the last element of my outfit to be picked although you may do it differently! Nowadays, fewer people wear a tie because things are more casual than they used to be but a necktie is one of the easiest ways to both elevate and invigorate an outfit which is one of the reasons that Raphael has this collection.

    If you would like to send us your ties that you do not want anymore, email us at contact@gentlemansgazette.com and we will keep them. Maybe one day, we can have a museum exhibition with ties from different decades and it would be really cool especially vintage ties before the 1900s or early 20th century or even loud bold stuff.
    How many ties do you think Raphael has in his collection? Put your guess in the comments!

    My father and I have collectively accumulated some three-hundred ties over the years, with many of them being vintage pieces from the '50s and '60s. While he rarely dresses up anymore I wear them almost everyday since I wear a suit and tie on the weekdays. As a result I'll never have to worry about wearing a tired outfit again.

    I came across my old school ties in an attic trunk last month, my house tie was dark blue with a white and yellow stripe. We wore stiff detachable collars (the Arundel I seem to remember) I noticed there was still a white stich on the tie blade to tell us where to start the knot to create a four-in-hand small enough to sit on the collar stud, then arch out slightly, held in place by a small clip just under my grey waistcoat. Standards of what seems like a hundred years ago now - but we did look very smart. Your wonderful tie retrospective reminded me of those days - thank you Raphael.

    As someone who collects pre-1950s menswear, I was sort of surprised to hear that you don’t wear any wool ties in the summer! Tropical weight wools are one of my preferred choices in warmer months. Botany for example made some absolutely lovely tropical weight wool ties throughout the 30s and 40s. Wish I could post pictures in the comments section!

    An excellent video. I've been collecting tie for 3 - 4 years now. I've got about 100. I actually buy them from thrift stores (charity shops in the UK), vintage shops etc for very little money. I like the vintage quality silk, linen wool and blends in all patterns - not too bold, mind. It's a pleasure to find vintage quality ties and I enjoy wearing them knowing it's highly unlikely anyone else will be wearing anything similar! Great collection Raphael - you've been an inspiration to me and I've benefitted for your knowledge and style.
    Regards
    Tony

    I got about 600+ pure silk ties, and counting, since I wear a different tie to work every day. I've made a rack out of 2 tension bars and two heavy duty 12 foot curtain rods (that still managed to bow slightly from the sheer weight of the ties) I have them sorted by color.They take up a whole wall in my room so I look like a crazy person, it was the only way to store them because my closet is completely stuffed.

    I appreciate your appreciation of vintage. I'm more of a modern tie wearer, focusing almost exclusively on silk. At one time I had over 120 ties, however, I have given away more than 60 of these, keeping my favorites or gifts for myself. I love ties. I love dressing into them. I think it is a disappearing art and I am distressed at this. Wearing a tie brings up your self-awareness and esteem, and can keep you focused on a professional attitude. Love your videos and keep up the great work .

      100% I wear a tie every opportunity I can get. I never wore them in my youth in fear of them getting grabbed in a fight or getting dirty but now that I am in my thirties it gives you a more dignified look. Neck wear is great for older guys since it distracts from guts, hides weird necks, gives shape to the face and aside from the pocket square is one of the few ways you can really go crazy with colors and fabrics in an otherwise boring slab that is most of menswear.

    My tie collection span from 1977 to ?, I have a soft spot for ties... My tie collection started when I was working part-time in a small college town men's clothing store; later becoming a store manager of another men's clothing store, my collection took off. Five years ago, I thinned out my collection but have more now than ever before. Something about a beautiful tie, still catches my attention even though I rarely wear one. Majority of my ties now, comes from thrifting.

      I get the same response, maybe little more subtle when I wear a tie to Church, usually get ask if I'm giving the sermon. But the usual venues I get to wear my ties are weddings or funerals. It's sad to see formality fall to such a low level. It's even worse when retired; big bellies and slobbery. Of course, I'm doing my part to change this image by joining Planet Fitness and wearing an occasional tie.

    I had a decent collection of ties, mostly vintage, but I lost a lot over the years and got rid of a lot last time I moved. I had a supposed vintage black widow silk tie. If I dressed in formal or preppy attire more often, and had more money, I would most definitely collect ties. I have completely fallen in love with the look of wool or cashmere ties, linen and or cotton ties, and knitted ties.

I wore a suit everyday to the point they thought I was a student teacher and I would ditch, I dropped out of high school and was working at Papa John's but I always put a blazer on after work, It did not go unnoticed and I was pulled into sales by a customer. Wearing a suit in sales is a lot of pressure so it forced me to out perform everyone, I then went into the tech world and was always fast tracked up the ladder because of the way I looked and spoke. I now work for myself as a tech consultant and make great money despite having no formal education in large part to the way I dress.

    What kinds of ties should I look for when building my collection? I'd be open to wearing ties more often, but let me give some more personal details to my situation:
    I'm a younger gentleman currently 25 years old (and long time Gentleman's Gazette subscriber who has watched just about every video on this channel!) and a college/university student (currently majoring in Psychology). I'm basically starting from scratch with my "tie collection" for my wardrobe as I currently only have one or two formal ties. I only have about 2 formal suits, but what I really like wearing are sport coats because they are versatile as I can dress them up or down. I own roughly a dozen sports coats (a few tweed, a few formal [mostly solids] and a few less formal by weave patterns). I've used pocket squares and other accessories occasionally, but ties are something I haven't used a lot. I'm open to wearing them, yet one can see why I haven't needed them as often due to having more sport coats and being able to (usually) dress them down (especially by patterned dress shirts versus more formal solids).
    Is there a system of tie "must-haves" to start a collection? Should I just purchase ties only with specific coats to pair in mind (like grenadine/knit ties with tweed sport coats etc.), or should I simply purchase individual ties I like and build the tie portion of my wardrobe slowly over time?
    Any advice is welcomed :)

    • @perosa99
      @perosa99 Před 2 lety +1

      I believe they have an episode of essential ties. I would look it up in YT, I’m sure it will come up. They tell you to get the most versatile ones first, a couple of solid single color ones (dark blue, dark green…), some classic patterns that might match your outfits (their store Fort Belvedere can be used as a guide for some ideas) and the knit ties, which will go great with some more relaxed look with sport coats.

      Hi friend, as you have seen the ties displayed in this video most of them were casual ties meaning that they canbe worn with sport jackets and as well suit jackets. Having many ties gives you the luxury to dress accordingly and uniquely. Try to purchase as many ties as you can specifically 1980s ties according to my suggestion.

    • @themoderndandy713
      @themoderndandy713 Před 2 lety +2

      Here's my bit of advice: Go to Dillard's. Dillard's ties dominate my wardrobe. They're usually patterned, and they're bolder, they often come in medallions or interesting designs, and that really works well when you're going less for corporate businessman and more for the dresser-for-fun. They're still classic and elegant, but the designs are extremely attractive and exciting.
      Tie brands at Dillard's include Hart Schaffner Marx and Daniel Cremieux. If you can't shop there, consider going online.
      As a bit of advice, going off of my previous advice, going for patterns and colors and fun accessories is a good idea for young gentlemen. Wearing a dark, navy, two-piece suit with a dark tie will look more out-of-place at a friendly gathering than, say, a glen check suit with a fun tie, or a sport coat with a colorful pocket square. The idea is not to look like a corporate businessman who happened to show up to a get-together. This kind of look certainly has historical precedence, too. Casual suits are a thing, and can still be worn with a tie and dress shoes!

    I have 120+ ties (listed in an A-Z of designer names to cover the alphabet. From (A) Georgio Armani, Loris Azzaro... to (Z) Ermenigildo Zegna. It started when I bought a tie and then bought the designer who taught the master. The master's master. They hang on 'Made in Germany' 80's tie racks that can hold 20 ties each. I noticed that you didnt even mention Hermès as you turned that tie over :-)

      The key to crazier ties is going for lighter suits (especially blues) making sure the width of the tie is close to the width of the lapel, having the suit fit really well and being esthetically consistent. Fore example when I wear more vintage looking ties I wear my heavier leather shoes wear my thicker hornrim glasses but when I wear my slimmer brightly colored or more modern pattern ties I wear my clear frames and my slim loafers. I also find your haircut/face grooming situation has to be more on point when wearing bold ties because ties draw attention to the face.

    In the olden, olden days I was almost religious in my daily choice of rep ties versus medallion pattern ties. Will my tie coordinate with my braces?!? Then in the olden days I made sure I looked impeccably "business casual" ... which meant wearing everything I wore in the olden, olden days just without the tie & jacket. But now? It's a major achievement if I even have to put on a clean shirt for a meeting where I know I'll have to turn on my video camera!! Definitely nostalgic for the olden, olden days.

    There comes a point where you must have ties you don't ever wear.
    It is great that you categorize them and that is an idea that could help others choose the right tie for the right season/occasion but it just seems there must be tied you never choose. Do you just keep them for the fun of it?

    I've inherited a lot of ties from my grandfather, who was a very sharp dresser but he was also really into micropaterns, especially unusual, almost tribal ones. He pulled that off effortlessly but they are really clashing with my style, which is a real shame. They are really nice, vintage ones but I can wear only the most boring ones.
