This is a review on the Sony Handycam CCD-M8u from 1985. I go over some unique information about this camcorder, along with physical features. This camcorder is hard to find batteries or power supplies for it. so i am not able to share any footage from it.

Hi Brandon! Loved your review of the Sony first Handycam! I have one right here. The reason why the handle comes off, is so it can fit nicely into an underwater case. I have a photograph of it, but I’m not sure how to attach it to this message. That first Sony camera launched me into purchasing a camera pretty much every year or so as they improved exponentially. But the first video I shot with that first camera has actually made it onto television, as I was able to film some pretty cool experiences in Africa, including surviving a hippo biting my canoe. If it weren’t for the yellow waterproof case, the camera would’ve drowned.
Anyway, wonderful video!
That’s cool I didn’t know they made a waterproof case for the M8u. I know they had specific models that were water proof or water resistant like the Sony sp7 and sp9 I think the models were
i love this camcorder. I used for making of and Hollidays. I playback with an HI8 camcorder and atomos HD recorder.
Dang that’s awesome it was in working condition
@@brandoncameracollection yes, long time for ajust my set up, but now it's very cool. with the yellow protection sports its very cool. young people thinks it's for google pictures for maps haha. (sorry for my English)
Coolest looking camcorder ever made. Love the box shape of it
Definitely super cool
Nice video, a discord sounds really useful! Have you ever considered hooking up a variable power supply directly to the Camera? Alot of Sony cameras have their exact voltage in the service manual or documentation, meaning you can plug in the proper power and ground wires and they could work.
I believe it’s a 6 volt and you’ll have to send me a link to one so I can see what your talking about. That sounds very useful when you don’t have any other options.

Above is an example of a bench power supply, where you could manually set it to 6 volts.
www.manualslib.com/manual/2581137/Sony-Ccd-M8u.html#product-CCD-M8U
This service manual says it's 5.2 W, so that means 0.86 Amps. If you can identify which is positive and which is negative for the battery, you could replace it with those numbers
I recently acquired a Sony CCD-M8E it came in a hard case with the EV-C8E video 8 player/recorder, I'm sure it was essential for to buy the complete system otherwise playback would have been very difficult in 1984. I feel really fortunate to have a good example of this interesting piece of history.
Yeah that’s definitely rare I think to have the video player
@@brandoncameracollection If it helps, the Sony CCD-V7AF-E and CCD-V8 use exactly the same battery and power supply, they are relatively cheap here in the UK, maybe its the same in the US. If you found a worker it you could use it as a playback machine as well, could be a good follow up video.
Yeah I actually just recently sold the m8u
A review of the camera without turning it on, wow. Not even sample footage?
No I wasn’t able to since I couldn’t find a battery or power supply. If I wanted one I had to buy another one of these cameras to be able to get the battery or power supply. Since this camera is so old battery companies don’t make replacement batteries for I either so I was a little s.o.l on it.
@@brandoncameracollection two solutions. change the cells into the plastique batterie or 3D print (maps on the internet) for LR6 classic
Ciao io possiedo la stessa videocamera, con la batteria con il cavo e 2 batterie portatili, posso mandarti qualche foto se possibile
This is almost 100% guaranteed to not work in the slightest. It may turn on, but it will not last long. This was during the peak of the crapcap era of sony, external condition means absolutely nothing. It will not work properly without a full recap unless a miracle is performed.
